Abstract
BACKGROUND Simultaneous interoceptive, emotional, and social cognition deficits are observed across neurodegenerative diseases. Indirect evidence suggests shared neurobiological bases underlying these impairments, termed the allostatic-interoceptive network (AIN). However, no study has yet explored the convergence of these deficits in neurodegenerative diseases or examined how structural and functional changes contribute to cross-domain impairments. METHODS A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) activated likelihood estimate meta-analysis encompassed studies that met the following inclusion criteria: interoception, emotion, or social cognition tasks; neurodegenerative diseases (behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasias, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis); and neuroimaging (structural: magnetic resonance imaging voxel-based morphometry; functional: magnetic resonance imaging and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography). RESULTS Of 20,593 studies, 170 met inclusion criteria (58 interoception, 65 emotion, and 47 social cognition) involving 7032 participants (4963 patients and 2069 healthy control participants). In all participants combined, conjunction analyses revealed AIN involvement of the insula, amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, striatum, thalamus, and hippocampus across domains. In behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, this conjunction was replicated across domains, with further involvement of the temporal pole, temporal fusiform cortex, and angular gyrus. A convergence of interoception and emotion in the striatum, thalamus, and hippocampus in Parkinson's disease and the posterior insula in primary progressive aphasias was also observed. In Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, disruptions in the AIN were observed during interoception, but no convergence with emotion was identified. CONCLUSIONS Neurodegeneration induces dysfunctional AIN across atrophy, connectivity, and metabolism, more accentuated in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. Findings bolster the predictive coding theories of large-scale AIN, calling for more synergistic approaches to understanding interoception, emotion, and social cognition impairments in neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric disorder that arises after acute or chronic exposure to threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. The pathophysiology of PTSD is complex and involves dysregulation of multiple interacting brain regions and neurobiological systems including the sympathetic nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and the immune system. Deficient biosynthesis of neurosteroids that positively modulate GABAA receptor function, including allopregnanolone (Allo) and its equipotent stereoisomer pregnanolone (PA), also affects a subpopulation of individuals with PTSD and is associated with increased PTSD risk, severity, chronicity and treatment resistance. The synthesis of these neuroactive steroids by the brain, adrenal glands, and gonads may be influenced by stress, drugs, social isolation and other factors with impact on the balance of inhibitory versus excitatory (I/E) neurotransmission in brain. These neuroactive steroids are thus considered a potential target for new PTSD therapeutics. In this review, we first present studies in humans and rodents performed over the past 20 years that have shaped our current understanding of the role of Allo and PA in the pathophysiology of PTSD. We will also discuss the means by which rigorous measurement of neurosteroids can be used to identify individually-variable dysfunctional patterns of neurosteroidogenesis that could be targeted to prevent or treat PTSD. This broadened precision medicine approach to diagnosis of neuroendocrinopathies associated with PTSD may aid in reducing PTSD risk and facilitating the effective prescribing of PTSD therapeutics. We hope that such an approach will also forestall development of individually variable but common psychiatric, substance abuse, and medical PTSD-comorbidities.

Abstract
Introduction It has long been known that highly arousing emotional single items are better recollected than low arousing neutral items. Despite the robustness of this memory advantage, emotional arousing events may not always promote the retrieval of source details (i.e., source memory) or associated neutral information. Methods To shed more light on these effects, we pooled data from seven different studies (N = 333) to investigate the role of emotion on item-context binding in episodic memory, as well as potential interacting factors (e.g., encoding instructions, type of retrieval task, or acute stress). In all studies, participants incidentally encoded common neutral objects (i.e., items), overlaid on different pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant background scenes (i.e., contexts). One week later, the encoded objects were presented intermixed with new ones and memory for item and source contextual details was tested, also considering the contribution of recollection and familiarity-based processes. Results Linear mixed models revealed a recollection-based retrieval advantage for unpleasant and pleasant source contextual details compared to neutral ones. Bayes hypothesis-testing analysis further indicated decisive evidence in favor of a relevant role of emotional arousal and recollection in source contextual memory. Regarding item memory, linear mixed models revealed enhanced recollection-based memory for items encoded in pleasant contexts compared to their neutral and unpleasant counterparts. However, Bayes analysis revealed strong to moderate evidence for models without affective category (or its interactions), indicating that the affective category of contexts in which objects were paired during encoding had little influence on item memory performance. Discussion The present results are discussed in relation to existing evidence and current neurobiological models of emotional episodic memory by also emphasizing the role of predictive processing as a useful conceptual framework to understand the effects of emotion on memory for source details and associated neutral information.

Abstract
Motivation is often thought to enhance adaptive decision-making by biasing actions toward rewards and away from punishment. Emerging evidence, however, points to a more nuanced view whereby motivation can both enhance and impair different aspects of decision-making. Model-based approaches have gained prominence over the past decade for developing more precise mechanistic explanations for how incentives impact goal-directed behavior. In this Special Focus, we highlight three studies that demonstrate how computational frameworks help decompose decision processes into constituent cognitive components, as well as formalize when and how motivational factors (e.g., monetary rewards) influence specific cognitive processes, decision-making strategies, and self-report measures. Finally, I conclude with a provocative suggestion based on recent advances in the field: that organisms do not merely seek to maximize the expected value of extrinsic incentives. Instead, they may be optimizing decision-making to achieve a desired internal state (e.g., homeostasis, effort, affect). Future investigation into such internal processes will be a fruitful endeavor for unlocking the cognitive, computational, and neural mechanisms of motivated decision-making.

Abstract
Dealing with uncertainty is a pivotal skill for adaptive decision-making across various real-life contexts. Cognitive models suggest that individuals continuously update their knowledge based on past choices and outcomes. Traditionally, uncertainty has been linked to negative states such as fear and anxiety. Recent evidence, however, highlights that uncertainty can also evoke positive emotions, such as surprise, interest, excitement, and enthusiasm, depending on one's task expectations. Despite this, the interplay between mood, confidence, and learning remains underexplored. Some studies indicate that self-reported mood does not always align with confidence, as these constructs evolve on different timescales. We propose that mood influences confidence, thereby enhancing decision flexibility-defined as the ability to switch effectively between exploration and exploitation. This increased flexibility is expected to improve task performance by increasing accuracy. Our findings support this hypothesis, revealing that confidence modulates exploration/exploitation strategies and learning rates, while mood affects reward perception and confidence levels. These findings indicate that metacognition entails a dynamic balance between exploration and exploitation, integrating mood states with high-level cognitive processes.

Abstract
Previous studies have highlighted that temporal source memory can be influenced by factors such as the individual's age and the emotional valence of the event to be remembered. In this study, we investigated how the different points of view (POVs) from which an event is presented could interact with the relationship between age-related differences and emotional valence on temporal source memory. One hundred and forty-one younger adults (aged 18-30) and 90 older adults (aged 65-74) were presented with a series of emotional videos shot from different POVs (first vs. third-person) in three sessions. In the fourth session, participants were asked to indicate in which session (1, 2, or 3) they viewed each video. The results indicated that the first-person POV amplified the effects of the emotional valence on temporal source memory. Only in this experimental condition, older adults "pushed away" negative stimuli by perceiving them as more distant in time, and "kept closer" positive stimuli by perceiving them as more recent. In comparison, younger adults "kept closer" positive stimuli. These findings add to the existing literature on the positivity effect on temporal source memory and highlighted the importance of considering the POV in relation to the emotional valence.

This paper introduces a pioneering investigation into affective pragmatics through the perspective of Darwinian Biolinguistics, an interdisciplinary field at the nexus of biological and linguistic principles. Anchored in Darwin's theory of evolution and the latest developments in neurobiology, this study delves into the influence of biological factors---especially those pertaining to the brain's emotional processing on pragmatic communication. The research posits that human emotional responses, inherent in our biological constitution, profoundly influence the usage and interpretation of language in social interactions.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become the primary tool for exploring neural correlates of emotion. To enhance the reliability of results in understanding the complex nature of emotional experiences, researchers combine findings from multiple fMRI studies using coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA). As one of the most widely employed CBMA methods worldwide, activation likelihood estimation (ALE) is of great importance in affective neuroscience and neuropsychology. This comprehensive review provides an introductory guide for implementing the ALE method in emotion research, outlining the experimental steps involved. By presenting a case study about the emotion of disgust, with regard to both its core and social processing, we offer insightful commentary as to how ALE can enable researchers to produce consistent results and, consequently, fruitfully investigate the neural mechanisms underpinning emotions, facilitating further progress in this field.

Abstract
Democratic societies have to face the challenge of increasing affective polarisation - a strong, emotionally fuelled, opposition between adherents of different political parties, or conflicting views and attitudes in different social groups. Social and psychological sciences can contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon and the special role of emotion theory and research in this respect. In their invited contribution, Bakker and Lelkes note the lack of conceptual precision of the term affective and invite emotion scientists to fill this notion with a theoretical structure that encourages systematic research across different problem areas and cultures. Two invited comments on this article support this initiative but favour an approach that privileges discrete emotions. In his comment, Von Scheve argues that intentionality and the associated action tendencies are essential to understand the emotional basis of polarisation. Halperin et al., based on a conceptual analysis and their own empirical research, they highlight the multi-faceted emotion of disappointment, covering both negative and positive aspects, as the most promising candidate. Finally, I consider the potential role of mixed or blended emotions as well as the potential contributions of appraisal theory, especially with respect to appraisal bias and ensuing emotion dispositions and action tendencies.

Abstract
While many believe that affective polarisation poses a significant threat to democratic stability, the definition and operationalisation of the concept varies greatly. This leads to conceptual slippage as well as imprecise tests of the causes and consequences of affective polarisation. In order to clearly identify and target its micro-foundations, we must understand the degree to which political divides are, in fact, affective. In this paper, we do so. We begin by delineating affective polarisation, a social divide that is purportedly distinct from policy-based disagreements. Subsequently, we explore the influence of emotions in politics, including how affect is conceptualised within the framework of polarisation. Where possible, our literature review is supplemented with analyses of existing datasets to support our points. The paper concludes by proposing a series of questions emotion researchers could address in the study of polarisation.

Abstract
Socio-cognitive research on bilinguals points to a moral foreign-language effect (MFLE), with more utilitarian choices (e.g., sacrificing someone to save more people) for moral dilemmas presented in the second language (L2) relative to the first language. Yet, inconsistent results highlight the influence of subject-level variables, including a critical underexplored factor: L2 proficiency (L2p). Here we provide a systematic review of 57 bilingualism studies on moral dilemmas, showing that L2p rarely modulates responses to impersonal dilemmas, but it does impact personal dilemmas (with MFLEs proving consistent at intermediate L2p levels but unsystematic at high L2p levels). We propose an empirico-theoretical framework to conceptualize such patterns, highlighting the impact of L2p on four affective mediating factors: mental imagery, inhibitory control, prosocial behavior and numerical processing. Finally, we outline core challenges for the field. These insights open new avenues at the crossing of bilingualism and social cognition research.

Abstract
The causal role of the cerebral hemispheres in positive and negative emotion processing remains uncertain. The Right Hemisphere Hypothesis proposes right hemispheric superiority for all emotions, while the Valence Hypothesis suggests the left/right hemisphere's primary involvement in positive/negative emotions, respectively. To address this, emotional video clips were presented during dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) electrical stimulation, incorporating a comparison of tDCS and high frequency tRNS stimulation techniques and manipulating perspective-taking (first-person vs third-person Point of View, POV). Four stimulation conditions were applied while participants were asked to rate emotional video valence: anodal/cathodal tDCS to the left/right DLPFC, reverse configuration (anodal/cathodal on the right/left DLPFC), bilateral hf-tRNS, and sham (control condition). Results revealed significant interactions between stimulation setup, emotional valence, and POV, implicating the DLPFC in emotions and perspective-taking. The right hemisphere played a crucial role in both positive and negative valence, supporting the Right Hemisphere Hypothesis. However, the complex interactions between the brain hemispheres and valence also supported the Valence Hypothesis. Both stimulation techniques (tDCS and tRNS) significantly modulated results. These findings support both hypotheses regarding hemispheric involvement in emotions, underscore the utility of video stimuli, and emphasize the importance of perspective-taking in this field, which is often overlooked.

Abstract
Emotions are processed in the brain through a cortical route, responsible for detailed-conscious recognition and mainly based on image High Spatial Frequencies (HSF), and a subcortical route, responsible for coarse-unconscious processing and based on Low SF (LSF). However, little is known about possible changes in the functioning of the two routes in ageing. In the present go/no-go online task, 112 younger adults and 111 older adults were asked to press a button when a happy or angry face appeared (go) and to inhibit responses for neutral faces (no-go). Facial stimuli were presented unfiltered (broadband image), filtered at HSF and LSF, and hybrids (LSF of an emotional expression superimposed to the HSF of the same face with a neutral expression). All stimuli were also presented rotated on the vertical axis (upside-down) to investigate the global analysis of faces in ageing. Results showed an overall better performance of younger compared to older participants for all conditions except for hybrid stimuli. The expected face-inversion effect was confirmed in both age groups. We conclude that, besides an overall worsening of the perceptual skill with ageing, no specific impairment in the functioning of both the cortical and the subcortical route emerged.

Abstract
In today's digital information age, human exposure to visual artifacts has reached an unprecedented quasi-omnipresence. Some of these cultural artifacts are elevated to the status of artworks which indicates a special appreciation of these objects. For many persons, the perception of such artworks coincides with aesthetic experiences (AE) that can positively affect health and wellbeing. AEs are composed of complex cognitive and affective mental and physiological states. More profound scientific understanding of the neural dynamics behind AEs would allow the development of passive Brain-Computer-Interfaces (BCI) that offer personalized art presentation to improve AE without the necessity of explicit user feedback. However, previous empirical research in visual neuroaesthetics predominantly investigated functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Event-Related-Potentials correlates of AE in unnaturalistic laboratory conditions which might not be the best features for practical neuroaesthetic BCIs. Furthermore, AE has, until recently, largely been framed as the experience of beauty or pleasantness. Yet, these concepts do not encompass all types of AE. Thus, the scope of these concepts is too narrow to allow personalized and optimal art experience across individuals and cultures. This narrative mini-review summarizes the state-of-the-art in oscillatory Electroencephalography (EEG) based visual neuroaesthetics and paints a road map toward the development of ecologically valid neuroaesthetic passive BCI systems that could optimize AEs, as well as their beneficial consequences. We detail reported oscillatory EEG correlates of AEs, as well as machine learning approaches to classify AE. We also highlight current limitations in neuroaesthetics and suggest future directions to improve EEG decoding of AE.
