Visual processing at goal and effector locations is dynamically enhanced during motor preparation

The anticipatory effect of goal-directed action planning with a lower limb on peri-personal space

Recent studies have demonstrated that the representation of peri-personal space (PPS) can be strongly modulated by the intention to execute a spatially-directed hand-movement. However, the question of whether analogous motor-induced PPS modulations can be observed during the planning and execution of goal-directed lower limbs movements has been scarcely investigated. Here we asked whether changes in the visuo-tactile PPS maps occur during the planning of a goal directed foot-movement. We asked participants to respond to the location of a tactile stimulus delivered to the index finger (top) or the thumb (bottom) of the right hand while ignoring a visual distractor presented at congruent or incongruent elevations, either close to the foot or close to the goal of the foot movement. This version of the cross-modal congruency task was performed under two different experimental conditions, as a baseline (static task, no movement involved) and embedded into a dual-task in which participants also had to plan and execute a goal-directed foot movement (dynamic task). In the static task, comparable cross-modal congruency effects (CCE) were present near the foot and near the movement goal. In the dynamic task, the CCE near the foot shrank considerably, whereas a sizable CCE was present near the movement goal. This anticipatory reweighting of the multisensory representation of near-space demonstrates that PPS is modulated by the intention to perform a goal-directed foot movement, with a weakened representation of the space around the currently occupied foot location when a movement is imminent.

Electrophysiological indexes of the cognitive-motor trade-off associated with motor response complexity in a cognitive task

Complex actions require more cognitive and motor control than simple ones. Literature shows that to face complexity, the brain must make a compromise between available resources usually giving priority to motor control. However, literature has minimally explored the effect of the motor response complexity on brain processing associated with cognitive tasks. Consequently, it is unknown whether carrying out a cognitive task requiring motor responses of increasing complexity could reduce cognitive processing keeping stable motor control. Therefore, this study aims to investigate possible modulations exerted by increasing motor response complexity in a cognitive task on brain processing. To this aim, we analyzed the event-related potentials and behavioral responses during a cognitive task with increasing complexity of the required motor response (keypress, reaching and stepping). Results showed the increasing motor complexity enhances early visual and attentional processing (P1 and N1 components) but reduces the late post-perceptual cognitive control (P3 component). Additionally, we found a component following the P3 which was specific for stimuli requiring a response. This component, labeled N750, increased amplitude along with the response motor complexity. Behaviorally, response accuracy was not affected by complexity. Results indicated that in cognitive tasks stimulus processing is affected by the complexity of the motor response. Complex responses require a greater investment of early perceptual and attentional resources, but at late phases of processing, cognitive resources are less available in favor of motor resources. This confirms the idea of the motor-priority cognitive-motor trade-off of the brain.

Visual attention around a hand location localized by proprioceptive information

Facilitation of visual processing has been reported in the space near the hand. To understand the underlying mechanism of hand proximity attention, we conducted experiments that isolated hand-related effects from top–down attention, proprioceptive information from visual information, the position effect from the influence of action, and the distance effect from the peripersonal effect. The flash-lag effect was used as an index of attentional modulation. Because the results showed that the flash-lag effect was smaller at locations near the hand, we concluded that there was a facilitation effect of the visual stimuli around the hand location identified through proprioceptive information. This was confirmed by conventional reaction time measures. We also measured steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) in order to investigate the spatial properties of hand proximity attention and top–down attention. The results showed that SSVEP reflects the effect of top–down attention but not that of hand proximity attention. This suggests that the site of hand proximity attention is at a later stage of visual processing, assuming that SSVEP responds to neural activities at the early stages. The results of left-handers differed from those of right-handers, and this is discussed in relation to handedness variation.

The influence of motor preparation on the processing of action-relevant visual features

Action preparation can facilitate performance in tasks of visual perception, for instance by speeding up responses to action-relevant stimulus features. However, it is unknown whether this facilitation reflects an influence on early perceptual processing, or instead post-perceptual processes. In three experiments, a combination of psychophysics and electroencephalography was used to investigate whether visual features are influenced by action preparation at the perceptual level. Participants were cued to prepare oriented reach-to-grasp actions before discriminating target stimuli oriented in the same direction as the prepared grasping action (congruent) or not (incongruent). As expected, stimuli were discriminated faster if their orientation was congruent, compared to incongruent, with the prepared action. However, action-congruency had no influence on perceptual sensitivity, regardless of cue-target interval and discrimination difficulty. The reaction time effect was not accompanied by modulations of early visual-evoked potentials. Instead, beta-band (13-30 Hz) synchronization over sensorimotor brain regions was influenced by action preparation, indicative of improved response preparation. Together, the results suggest that action preparation may not modulate early visual processing of orientation, but likely influences higher order response or decision related processing. While early effects of action on spatial perception are well documented, separate mechanisms appear to govern non-spatial feature selection.

Tool use modulates early stages of visuo-tactile integration in far space: Evidence from event-related potentials

The neural representation of multisensory space near the body is modulated by the active use of long tools in non-human primates. Here, we investigated whether the electrophysiological correlates of visuo-tactile integration in near and far space were modulated by active tool use in healthy humans. Participants responded to a tactile target delivered to one hand while an irrelevant visual stimulus was presented ipsilaterally in near or far space. This crossmodal task was performed after the use of either short or long tools. Crucially, the P100 components elicited by visuo-tactile stimuli was enhanced on far as compared to near space trials after the use of long tools, while no such difference was present after short tool use. Thus, we found increased neural responses in brain areas encoding tactile stimuli to the body when visual stimuli were presented close to the tip of the tool after long tool use. This increased visuo-tactile integration on far space trials following the use of long tools might indicate a transient remapping of multisensory space. We speculate that performing voluntary actions with long tools strengthens the representation of sensory information arising within portions of space (i.e. the hand and the tip of the tool) that are most functionally relevant to one's behavioural goals.

Grasp preparation modulates early visual processing of size and detection of local/global stimulus features

Preparing to grasp objects facilitates visual processing of object location, orientation and size, compared to preparing actions such as pointing. This influence of action on perception reflects mechanisms of selection in visual perception tuned to current action goals, such that action relevant sensory information is prioritized relative to less relevant information. In three experiments, rather than varying movement type (grasp vs point), the magnitude of a prepared movement (power vs precision grasps) was manipulated while visual processing of object size, as well as local/global target detection was measured. Early event-related potentials (ERP) elicited by task-irrelevant visual probes were enhanced for larger probes during power grasp preparation and smaller probes during precision grasp preparation. Local targets were detected faster following precision, relative to power grasp cues. The results demonstrate a direct influence of grasp preparation on sensory processing of size and suggest that the hierarchical dimension of objects may be a relevant perceptual feature for grasp programming. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that preparing different magnitudes of the same basic action has systematic effects on visual processing.
