Brain-environment alignment during movie watching predicts fluid intelligence and affective function in adulthood

The co-activation pattern between the DMN and other brain networks affects the cognition of older adults: evidence from naturalistic stimulation fMRI data

Brain function changes affect cognitive functions in older adults, yet the relationship between cognition and the dynamic changes of brain networks during naturalistic stimulation is not clear. Here, we recruited the young, middle-aged and older groups from the Cambridge Center for Aging and Neuroscience to investigate the relationship between dynamic metrics of brain networks and cognition using functional magnetic resonance imaging data during movie-watching. We found six reliable co-activation pattern (CAP) states of brain networks grouped into three pairs with opposite activation patterns in three age groups. Compared with young and middle-aged adults, older adults dwelled shorter time in CAP state 4 with deactivated default mode network (DMN) and activated salience, frontoparietal and dorsal-attention networks (DAN), and longer time in state 6 with deactivated DMN and activated DAN and visual network, suggesting altered dynamic interaction between DMN and other brain networks might contribute to cognitive decline in older adults. Meanwhile, older adults showed easier transfer from state 6 to state 3 (activated DMN and deactivated sensorimotor network), suggesting that the fragile antagonism between DMN and other cognitive networks might contribute to cognitive decline in older adults. Our findings provided novel insights into aberrant brain network dynamics associated with cognitive decline.

Relation of resting brain signal variability to cognitive and socioemotional measures in an adult lifespan sample

Temporal variability of the fMRI-derived blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal during cognitive tasks shows important associations with individual differences in age and performance. Less is known about relations between spontaneous BOLD variability measured at rest and relatively stable cognitive measures, such as IQ or socioemotional function. Here, we examined associations among resting BOLD variability, cognitive/socioemotional scores from the NIH Toolbox and optimal time of day for alertness (chronotype) in a sample of 157 adults from 20 to 86 years of age. To investigate individual differences in these associations independently of age, we regressed age out from both behavioral and BOLD variability scores. We hypothesized that greater BOLD variability would be related to higher fluid cognition scores, more positive scores on socioemotional scales and a morningness chronotype. Consistent with this idea, we found positive correlations between resting BOLD variability, positive socioemotional scores (e.g. self-efficacy) and morning chronotype, as well as negative correlations between variability and negative emotional scores (e.g. loneliness). Unexpectedly, we found negative correlations between BOLD variability and fluid cognition. These results suggest that greater resting brain signal variability facilitates optimal socioemotional function and characterizes those with morning-type circadian rhythms, but individuals with greater fluid cognition may be more likely to show less temporal variability in spontaneous measures of BOLD activity.

Personalized visual encoding model construction with small data

Quantifying population heterogeneity in brain stimuli-response mapping may allow insight into variability in bottom-up neural systems that can in turn be related to individual's behavior or pathological state. Encoding models that predict brain responses to stimuli are one way to capture this relationship. However, they generally need a large amount of fMRI data to achieve optimal accuracy. Here, we propose an ensemble approach to create encoding models for novel individuals with relatively little data by modeling each subject's predicted response vector as a linear combination of the other subjects' predicted response vectors. We show that these ensemble encoding models trained with hundreds of image-response pairs, achieve accuracy not different from models trained on 20,000 image-response pairs. Importantly, the ensemble encoding models preserve patterns of inter-individual differences in the image-response relationship. We also show the proposed approach is robust against domain shift by validating on data with a different scanner and experimental setup. Additionally, we show that the ensemble encoding models are able to discover the inter-individual differences in various face areas' responses to images of animal vs human faces using a recently developed NeuroGen framework. Our approach shows the potential to use existing densely-sampled data, i.e. large amounts of data collected from a single individual, to efficiently create accurate, personalized encoding models and, subsequently, personalized optimal synthetic images for new individuals scanned under different experimental conditions.
