Early postnatal noise exposure degrades the stimulus-specific adaptation of neurons in the rat auditory cortex in adulthood

Adaptation is an essential feature of auditory neurons, which reduces their responses to unchanging and recurring sounds and allows their response properties to be matched to the constantly changing statistics of sounds that reach the ears. As a consequence, processing in the auditory system highlights novel or unpredictable sounds and produces an efficient representation of the vast range of sounds that animals can perceive by continually adjusting the sensitivity and, to a lesser extent, the tuning properties of neurons to the most commonly encountered stimulus values. Together with attentional modulation, adaptation to sound statistics also helps to generate neural representations of sound that are tolerant to background noise and therefore plays a vital role in auditory scene analysis. In this review, we consider the diverse forms of adaptation that are found in the auditory system in terms of the processing levels at which they arise, the underlying neural mechanisms, and their impact on neural coding and perception. We also ask what the dynamics of adaptation, which can occur over multiple timescales, reveal about the statistical properties of the environment. Finally, we examine how adaptation to sound statistics is influenced by learning and experience and changes as a result of aging and hearing loss.

Neuroanatomical changes of the medial prefrontal cortex of male pups of Wistar rat after prenatal and postnatal noise stress

Recent evidences showed that, noise stress causes abnormal changes in structure and function of central nervous system (CNS). The Current study was conducted to evaluate some stereological parameters of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of male pups of Wistar rat after prenatal and early postnatal noise stress. 18 pregnant Wistar rats were randomly divided into prenatal noise-exposed (NE) group, postnatal NE group, and controls. Male pups of NE groups were exposed to noise 100 dB at the frequency ranges of 500-8000 Hz, 4 h per day from gestational day one (GD1) to GD21 for the prenatal NE group, and from postnatal day one (PND1) to PND21 in the postnatal NE group. The Control group animals were maintained under standard condition without noise stimulation. Corticosterone level in plasma was measured using ELISA technique. Changes of the neurons and non-neurons cells number and volume of the mPFC were evaluated by stereological analysis. Tunnel assay was also used for detection of apoptotic cells. Increase in plasma corticosterone level, decrease in the number of neurons, and increase in the apoptotic cells number were observed in both NE groups. Decrease in volume of mPFC and also in non-neurons cells number was observed in the prenatal NE group. An increase in the non-neurons number was seen in the postnatal NE group. Data of the current comparative study showed that, noise stress during prenatal and early postnatal periods can induce the abnormal alteration in some stereological parameters of mPFC in male pups of Wistar rat. These negative alterations were more remarkable after prenatal noise stress.

Sound and Vibration as Research Variables in Terrestrial Vertebrate Models

Sound and vibration have been shown to alter animal behavior and induce physiological changes as well as to cause effects at the cellular and molecular level. For these reasons, both environmental factors have a considerable potential to alter research outcomes when the outcome of the study is dependent on the animal existing in a normal or predictable biological state. Determining the specific levels of sound or vibration that will alter research is complex, as species will respond to different frequencies and have varying frequencies where they are most sensitive. In consideration of the potential of these factors to alter research, a thorough review of the literature and the conditions that likely exist in the research facility should occur specific to each research study. This review will summarize the fundamental physical properties of sound and vibration in relation to deriving maximal level standards, consider the sources of exposure, review the effects on animals, and discuss means by which the adverse effects of these factors can be mitigated.
