Depression and Personality Traits Across Adolescence-Within-Person Analyses of a Birth Cohort

Depressive symptoms and personality traits covary in adolescents, but our understanding of the nature of this relation is limited. Whereas a predisposition explanation posits that specific personality traits increase the vulnerability for developing depression, a scar explanation proposes that depression may alter premorbid personality. Attempts to test these explanatory models have relied on analyses that conflate within-person changes and between-person differences, which limits the implications that can be drawn. Moreover, research on the early adolescent years is lacking. The present study therefore examined within-person associations between depressive symptoms and Big Five personality traits across ages 10 to 16. Children (n = 817; 49.9% boys) and parents from two birth cohorts in Trondheim, Norway, were assessed biennially with clinical interviews capturing symptoms of major depressive disorder and dysthymia, and self-reported Big Five personality traits. Analyses were conducted using a random intercept cross-lagged panel model, which accounts for all unmeasured time-invariant confounding effects. Increased Neuroticism predicted an increased number of depressive symptoms-and increased depressive symptoms predicted increased Neuroticism-across ages 10 to 14. Moreover, increased depressive symptoms forecast reduced Extraversion across ages 10 to 16, and reduced Conscientiousness from ages 12 to 14. Increases in Neuroticism may contribute to the development of depressive symptoms-in line with the predisposition model. As regards the scar model, depression may have an even wider impact on personality traits: increasing Neuroticism and reducing Extraversion and Conscientiousness. These effects may already be present in the earliest adolescent years.

Problematic smartphone use is associated with differences in static and dynamic brain functional connectivity in young adults

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to investigate the possible associations between problematic smartphone use and brain functions in terms of both static and dynamic functional connectivity patterns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were scanned from 53 young healthy adults, all of whom completed the Short Version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS-SV) to assess their problematic smartphone use severity. Both static and dynamic functional brain network measures were evaluated for each participant. The brain network measures were correlated the SAS-SV scores, and compared between participants with and without a problematic smartphone use after adjusting for sex, age, education, and head motion.

RESULTS

Two participants were excluded because of excessive head motion, and 56.9% (29/51) of the final analyzed participants were found to have a problematic smartphone use (SAS-SV scores ≥ 31 for males and ≥ 33 for females, as proposed in prior research). At the global network level, the SAS-SV score was found to be significantly positively correlated with the global efficiency and local efficiency of static brain networks, and negatively correlated with the temporal variability using the dynamic brain network model. Large-scale subnetwork analyses indicated that a higher SAS-SV score was significantly associated with higher strengths of static functional connectivity within the frontoparietal and cinguloopercular subnetworks, as well as a lower temporal variability of dynamic functional connectivity patterns within the attention subnetwork. However, no significant differences were found when directly comparing between the groups of participants with and without a problematic smartphone use.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggested that problematic smartphone use is associated with differences in both the static and dynamic brain network organizations in young adults. These findings may help to identify at-risk population for smartphone addiction and guide targeted interventions for further research. Nevertheless, it might be necessary to confirm our findings in a larger sample, and to investigate if a more applicable SAS-SV cutoff point is required for defining problematic smartphone use in young Chinese adults nowadays.

Using resting thalamic connectivity to identify the relationship between Eysenck personality traits and intelligence in healthy adults

Personality refers to a set of relatively stable psychological characteristics of individuals and has been associated with intelligence. It is well known that the thalamus plays an important role in cognitive processes and personality traits, but the relationship between personality traits, thalamic function, and intelligence has rarely been directly explored. Hence, we investigated the relationship between Eysenck personality traits, resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the thalamus, and intelligence in a large sample of healthy adults (N = 176). We found that the trait of psychoticism was negatively associated with intelligence. The high intelligence group showed significantly lower psychoticism and demonstrated enhanced thalamic connectivity to the amygdala, inferior parietal lobules, pallidum, medial superior/middle frontal gyrus, and precuneus. Furthermore, a mediation analysis indicated that the FC between the left thalamus and left amygdala significantly mediated the correlation between psychoticism and full IQ (FIQ). These findings suggest that intelligent people may be less prone to psychoticism. Meanwhile, thalamic rsFC may reflect individual differences in intelligence and play a key role in the relationship between personality traits and intellectual abilities.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging-based identification of altered brain the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation in adolescent major depressive disorder patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy

PURPOSE

While electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been repeatedly been shown to effectively and efficiently treat the major depressive disorder (MDD), the mechanistic basis for such therapeutic efficacy remains to be firmly established. As such, further research exploring the ECT-based treatment of MDD in an adolescent population is warranted.

METHODS

This study included 30 treatment-naïve first-episode MDD patients and 30 healthy control (HC) individuals (aged 12-17 years). All participants were scanned using rs-fMRI, and the 30 MDD patients were scanned again after 2 weeks of the ECT treatment period. Intrinsic local activity in each voxel was assessed based on the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) parameter, with all fALFF analyses being completed using the REST application. Correlations between ECT-related changes in fALFF and clinical parameters were additionally examined.

RESULTS

Relative to HCs, MDD patients exhibited increased fALFF values in the right inferior frontal gyrus (ORBinf), inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), and the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) at baseline. Following ECT, these patients exhibited significant increases in fALFF values in the right medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed), dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (SFGdor), anterior cingulate, and paracingulate gyrus (ACG), median cingulate and paracingulate gyrus (DCG), and left MFG. MDD patient HAMD scores were negatively correlated with fALFF values when analyzing pre-ECT vs. post-HCT ΔHAMD and fALFF values in the right SFGmed, SFGdor, and the left MFG.

CONCLUSION

These data suggest that ECT induced altered fALFF in some regions of the brain, suggesting that these alterations may serve as a neurobiological indicator of ECT effectiveness in MDD adolescents.
