Update on transversity and Collins functions from SIDIS and data

Transversity Distributions and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon: Extraction from Dihadron Production and Their Universal Nature

We perform the first global quantum chromodynamics (QCD) analysis of dihadron production for a comprehensive set of data in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, from which we extract simultaneously the transversity distributions of the nucleon and π^{+}π^{-} dihadron fragmentation functions. We incorporate in our fits known theoretical constraints on transversity, namely, its small-x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. We furthermore show that lattice-QCD results for the tensor charges can be successfully included in the analysis. This resolves the previously reported incompatibility between the tensor charges extracted from dihadron production data and lattice QCD. We also find agreement with results for the transversity and tensor charges obtained from measurements on single-hadron production. Overall, our work demonstrates for the first time the universal nature of all available information for the transversity distributions and the tensor charges of the nucleon.

Nucleon Transversity Distribution in the Continuum and Physical Mass Limit from Lattice QCD

We report a state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculation of the isovector quark transversity distribution of the proton in the continuum and physical mass limit using large-momentum effective theory. The calculation is done at four lattice spacings a={0.098,0.085,0.064,0.049}  fm and various pion masses ranging between 220 and 350 MeV, with proton momenta up to 2.8 GeV. The result is nonperturbatively renormalized in the hybrid scheme with self-renormalization, which treats the infrared physics at large correlation distance properly, and extrapolated to the continuum, physical mass, and infinite momentum limit. We also compare with recent global analyses for the nucleon isovector quark transversity distribution.

The Collins Asymmetry in Λ Hyperon Produced SIDIS Process at Electron–Ion Colliders

We investigate Collins asymmetry in the Λ hyperon produced semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process based on the kinematical region of Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) and Electron–ion collider (EIC) within the transverse momentum dependence (TMD) factorization framework at next-to-leading-logarithmic order. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolution of the target proton transversity distribution function and the Collins function of the final-state Λ hyperon. The TMD evolution effect of the corresponding parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) is considered with the help of parametrization of the non-perturbative Sudakov form factors for the proton PDFs and Λ fragmentation functions. We apply the parametrization of the collinear proton transversity distribution function and the model results of Λ Collins function from the diquark spectator model as the inputs of the TMD evolution to numerically calculate Collins asymmetry in Λ produced SIDIS process at the kinematical configurations of EIC and EicC. It can be shown that the asymmetry is significant and can be measured at EIC and EicC. The flavor dependence of transversity distribution functions could be further constrained by studying the Λ hyperon produced SIDIS process in the future to improve our understanding of the spin structure within nucleons.

Multidimensional, High Precision Measurements of Beam Single Spin Asymmetries in Semi-inclusive π^{+} Electroproduction off Protons in the Valence Region

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from the proton have been performed using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report here a high precision multidimensional study of single π^{+} SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in Bjorken x, fractional energy, and transverse momentum of the hadron as well as photon virtualities Q^{2} ranging from 1-7  GeV^{2}. In particular, the structure function ratio F_{LU}^{sinϕ}/F_{UU} has been determined, where F_{LU}^{sinϕ} is a twist-3 quantity that can reveal novel aspects of emergent hadron mass and quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The data's impact on the evolving understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions.

First Monte Carlo Global Analysis of Nucleon Transversity with Lattice QCD Constraints

We report on the first global QCD analysis of the quark transversity distributions in the nucleon from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS), using a new Monte Carlo method based on nested sampling and constraints on the isovector tensor charge g_{T} from lattice QCD. A simultaneous fit to the available SIDIS Collins asymmetry data is compatible with g_{T} values extracted from a comprehensive reanalysis of existing lattice simulations, in contrast to previous analyses, which found significantly smaller g_{T} values. The contributions to the nucleon tensor charge from u and d quarks are found to be δu=0.3(2) and δd=-0.7(2) at a scale Q^{2}=2  GeV^{2}.

Beyond-Standard-Model Tensor Interaction and Hadron Phenomenology

We evaluate the impact of recent developments in hadron phenomenology on extracting possible fundamental tensor interactions beyond the standard model. We show that a novel class of observables, including the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions, and the transversity parton distribution function can contribute to the constraints on this quantity. Experimental extractions of the tensor hadronic matrix elements, if sufficiently precise, will provide a, so far, absent testing ground for lattice QCD calculations.

Single spin asymmetries in charged pion production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3He Target at Q2 = 1.4-2.7 GeV2

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive (3)He(e,e'π(±))X reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.16 < x < 0.35 with 1.4 < Q(2) < 2.7 GeV(2). The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The π(±) Collins moments for (3)He are consistent with zero, except for the π(+) moment at x = 0.35, which deviates from zero by 2.3σ. While the π(-) Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the π(+) Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and measured cross section ratios of proton to (3)He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

First glances at the transversity parton distribution through dihadron fragmentation functions

We present first observations of the transversity parton distribution based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. The extraction of transversity relies on the knowledge of dihadron fragmentation functions, which we take from electron-positron annihilation measurements. This is the first attempt to determine the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization.
