Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS We investigated whether genetic predisposition, the Lifestyle Inflammation Score (LIS), or the Food-based Dietary Inflammatory Index (FDII) were associated with diabetes incidence and whether these factors interact. METHODS AND RESULTS The study was conducted using population-based cohort data derived from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, which included 6568 people aged 40-69 years. Based on 25 genetic variants related to diabetes, genetic risk scores (GRSs) were determined and LISs and FDIIs were calculated and stratified into quartiles. We investigated the effects of gene-lifestyle interactions on the incident diabetes. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was used to generate hazard ratios with 95 % CIs. During the 16-year follow-up period, diabetes incidence was 13.6 per 1000 person-years. A dose-response association with diabetes was observed for both GRS and LIS quartiles but not for FDII quartiles. The GRS and LIS were also independently associated with diabetes incidence in a multivariate model. Compared to the bottom quartile, the top LIS quartile and the top GRS quartile had a 2.4-fold (95 % CI, 2.0-2.8) and a 1.4-fold (95 % CI, 1.2-1.7) higher diabetes risk, respectively. However, the FDII exhibited null association. When each genetic variant was evaluated, the top versus bottom LIS quartiles exhibited heterogeneous diabetes risks for rs560887 within G6PC2, rs7072268 within HK1, and rs837763 within CDT1; however, these differences were not statistically significant in multiple comparison. CONCLUSION Both GRS and LIS factors independently affect the incident diabetes, but their interaction effect showed insignificant association. Therefore, regardless of genetic susceptibility, more effort is needed to lower the risk for diabetes by improving lifestyle behaviors.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia are well-known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, the prevalence of dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus among individuals over 30 years of age in Korea has continuously increased. The current study therefore investigated the association between dyslipidemia and high glycated hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c) levels according to age group in adults over 20 years old. We used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2016 to 2017. Glycated hemoglobin, a well-established marker for elevated glucose levels, was categorized into three groups, normal (<5.7%), prediabetes (5.7-6.4%), and diabetes (≥6.5%). The presence of dyslipidemia was defined based on a diagnosis of dyslipidemia by a physician. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the prevalence of dyslipidemia and glycated hemoglobin according to age group. After adjusting for possible confounders, including age, sex, body mass index, marital status, education, occupation, household income, drinking, and smoking, we found a significant increase in the odds ratios (ORs) for dyslipidemia in the prediabetes (OR; 1.915, 95% CI; 1.696 to 2.163) and diabetes (OR; 3.533, 95% CI; 3.019 to 4.134) groups. Among subjects with higher glycated hemoglobin levels, those in their 40s or over had significantly increased odds for dyslipidemia. The current study found an association between high glycated hemoglobin levels and a diagnosis of dyslipidemia among Korean adults. Markers of lipid metabolism in adults with high glycated hemoglobin levels may need to be monitored, especially those in their 40s and older.

Abstract
Background and aims Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a high incidence liver pathology, is associated with a ∼1.5-fold higher cardiovascular disease risk. This phenomenon is generally attributed to the NAFLD-associated increase in circulating levels of pro-atherogenic apolipoprotein B100-containing small dense low-density lipoprotein and plasma hypertriglyceridemia. However, also a significant reduction in cholesterol transported by anti-atherogenic high-density lipoproteins (HDL) is frequently observed in subjects suffering from NAFLD as compared to unaffected people. In this review, we summarize data regarding the relationship between NAFLD and plasma HDL-cholesterol levels, with a special focus on highlighting potential causality between the NAFLD pathology and changes in HDL metabolism. Methods and results Publications in PUBMED describing the relationship between HDL levels and NAFLD susceptibility and/or disease severity, either in human clinical settings or genetically-modified mouse models, were critically reviewed for subsequent inclusion in this manuscript. Furthermore, relevant literature describing effects on lipid loading in cultured hepatocytes of models with genetic alterations related to HDL metabolism have been summarized. Conclusions Although in vitro observations suggest causality between HDL formation by hepatocytes and protection against NAFLD-like lipid accumulation, current literature remains inconclusive on whether relative HDL deficiency is actually driving the development of fatty liver disease in humans. In light of the current obesity pandemic and the associated marked rise in NAFLD incidence, it is of clear scientific and societal interest to gain further insight into the relationship between HDL-cholesterol levels and fatty liver development to potentially uncover the therapeutic potential of pharmacological HDL level and/or function modulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-grade inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and measuring levels of inflammatory molecules, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), may indicate Mets progression. Serum uric acid (SUA) has also been identified as an independent risk factor for MetS. This study aimed to investigate the association between MetS components and levels of serum hs-CRP and SUA using representative and reliable data for the Korean population. METHODS This study used the data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018, a cross-sectional and nationally representative survey performed by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. RESULTS We analysed the data of 13,454 individuals. High hs-CRP levels were observed in 1,164 (8.7%) subjects while 3,296 (24.5%) subjects had high SUA levels. Moreover, hs-CRP was negatively correlated with serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR, 1.703; 95% CI, 1.431-2.027). When stratified by sex, this trend remained, but the correlation was stronger in women than in men. Furthermore, high SUA levels were significantly associated with hypertension (HTN) (OR, 1.399; 95% CI, 1.210-1.616), hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 1.735; 95% CI, 1.486-2.026), and low HDL (OR, 1.257; 95% CI, 1.106-1.429), but not with diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR, 0.478; 95% CI, 0.382-0.597). When grouped by sex, this trend remained, however, all MetS components were found to be more prevalent in women with high SUA. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that low HDL was more prevalent in subjects with high hs-CRP, and high SUA levels were observed in subjects with HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL. However, the prevalence of high SUA was lower in diabetic subjects.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and inflammation play key roles in the pathophysiology in the pathophysiology of dyslipidemia, which are positive risks that increase atherosclerosis leading to important healthcare problems. Therefore, we aimed to study the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects of jelly drink containing polyphenol-rich roselle calyces extract and passion fruit juice with pulp concentrate (RP jelly drink) in comparison to a placebo jelly drink for 8 weeks. Forty-three adults with dyslipidemia were randomly assigned into two groups: the RP jelly drink group and the placebo group. Glucose, total cholesterol (TC) triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), oxidative stress biomarkers, inflammatory parameters, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) were measured with fasting blood samples at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks of intervention. Results showed a significant decrease in LDL-C and TG, respectively, after 8 weeks of RP jelly drink consumption (LDL-C: 107.63 ± 22.98 mg/dL; TG: 109.79 ± 38.83 mg/dL) compared to baseline measurements (LDL-C: 128.43 ± 32.74 mg/dL; TG: 132.33 ± 75.11 mg/dL). These may be possible due to reduced inflammation and improvements in oxidative stress, as demonstrated by the reduction of tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) α and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the enhancement of glutathione (GSH) after consuming the RP jelly drink for 8 weeks. However, no significant differences of treatment on glucose, total cholesterol, MCP-1, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10 were observed. In conclusion, daily consumption of RP jelly drink for 8 weeks resulted in significant improvement in lipid profiles in subjects with dyslipidemia. However, more research is needed to assess its nutritional and functional potential.

Abstract
Both long-term exposure to air pollution and abnormal fasting blood glucose (FBG) are linked to dyslipidemia prevalence. However, the joint role of air pollution and FBG on dyslipidemia remains unknown clearly. In this study, we aimed to test whether abnormal FBG could enhance the risks of long-term exposure to air pollutants on dyslipidemia in general Chinese adult population. The present study recruited 8917 participants from 4 cities in Hebei province, China. Participants' individual exposure to air pollutants was evaluated by the Empirical Bayesian Kriging statistical model in ArcGIS10.2 geographic information system. Dyslipidemia was defined according to Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in Chinese Adults. Subjects were grouped into normal, prediabetes, diabetes according to FBG level. Generalized linear models were applied to analyze the interaction of air pollutants and FBG on dyslipidemia prevalence. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 43.83% in our investigation. After adjusting all covariates, we found the risk of four air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2) on dyslipidemia prevalence was stronger as higher FBG level, and the adjusted odd ratio of interaction (ORinter (95% CI)) between PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2 and FBG levels on dyslipidemia was 1.171 (1.162, 1.189), 1.119 (1.111, 1.127), 1.124 (1.115, 1.130), 1.107 (1.098, 1.115), respectively. Stratified analyses indicated the modifying effects of FBG on the association of air pollution with dyslipidemia were stronger among male, less than 65 years old, overweight/obesity (all Pinter<0.1). Our study concluded that high FBG levels strengthened the risk of long-term exposure to air pollution on dyslipidemia, especially more noticeable in male, less than 65 years old, overweight.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the association of 2,3-dihydroxypropyl mercapturic acid (DHPMA), a urinary biomarker of environmental and dietary exposure to 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol and glycidol, with prevalent MetS in a Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. The urinary DHPMA concentrations were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis and further calibrated by the urinary creatinine content. MetS cases were defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for Asian-Americans of National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP/ATPIII). Multivariate-adjusted modified Poisson regression models were used to analyze the associations between the urinary DHPMA concentrations and MetS prevalence. Of the 1613 participants aged 45-75 years, we documented 552 (34.2%) MetS cases. After adjustment for potential risk factors, the relative risks (95% confidence intervals) of MetS prevalence across the increasing quartiles of DHPMA concentrations were 1.14 (0.93-1.39), 1.29 (1.06-1.56), and 1.50 (1.25-1.80), respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. We also observed strong positive association between urinary DHPMA concentrations and hypertriglyceridemia prevalence (P < 0.001 for trend). These positive associations remained unchanged in the subgroups stratified by general demographic, dietary and behavioral risk factors. These results suggested that urinary DHPMA was associated with higher prevalence of MetS among Chinese elderly people.

Abstract
The researchers evaluated the association between hyperuricemia and metabolic risk components in Korean women of reproductive and postmenopausal ages. The study data were collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016. Among a total of 4305 female participants, the data of 2958 women were analyzed. Of the 2958 participants, 57.6% (n = 1508) were of reproductive age. After adjusting for factors, hyperuricemia was significantly associated with abdominal obesity (OR 4.30, p = .046), high blood pressure (OR 3.23, p = .002), and hypertriglyceridemia (OR 3.08, p = .005) in reproductive women. In contrast, no metabolic risk was significantly associated with hyperuricemia in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the carbohydrate and lipid dynamics, associated inflammation markers and the effectiveness of a grape-derived stilbene concentrate (GDSC) treatment in experimental metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS The study was carried out on 40 male 12-weeks of age Wistar rats. The MetS was induced using the fructose model (feeding with 60%-solid fructose diet for 24 weeks). Rats with induced MetS were treated with polyphenolic GDSC, which was obtained by water-alcohol extraction of Vitis vinifera grapevine (Ressfood LLC, Russia). RESULTS The experimentally induced MetS development leads to classic MetS signs, including abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, high lipid levels and heart damage. The expression of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) had greater dynamics than biochemical measurements. The development of the associated inflammatory reactions was confirmed by the increased level of Toll-like receptor type 4 (TLR4) and C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to control levels. The use of the GDSC had positive dynamics in carbohydrate and lipid levels, inflammatory marker, also prevented associated inflammation and heart damage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Epidemiological and genetic studies have recorded the association between proinflammatory cytokines and the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The role of interleukin 6 (IL-6), NH2-terminal portion pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and resistin in the pathogenesis of heart disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is still a matter of controversy. The current study aimed to evaluate the role of these biomarkers in the development of left ventricular systolic dysfunction and the ability to use them as non-invasive test in the prediction of left ventricular hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction in T2DM. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS 150 participants were included in this case-control study. Patients were divided into two subgroups according to echocardiographic findings: group 1a included 46 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and echocardiographic evidence of abnormal systolic function; group 1b included 54 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and with normal echocardiogenic study; and group 2 included 50 apparently healthy controls. Routine laboratory investigations such as complete blood count, liver and renal function tests, and lipid profile, serum IL-6, NT-proBNP, and resistin were measured in all participants. Conventional echocardiography was done with special concern on the assessment of left ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction). RESULTS There was a significant increase in the level of resistin, NT-proBNP and IL-6 in group 1a patients compared with group 1b and in healthy controls. Echocardiographic parameters showed a significant increase in left ventricular mass index, left ventricle posterior wall thickness, interventricular septum thickness, and left ventricle mass in group 1a compared with group 1b and the control group. The increased left ventricular mass index was associated with higher levels of IL-6, NT-proBNP and resistin. CONCLUSIONS Proinflammatory cytokines had a clear relation with left ventricular systolic dysfunction and hypertrophy and can be used as early non-invasive markers for detection of left ventricular remodeling and systolic dysfunction in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Although epidemiologic studies suggest that dyslipidemia increases the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), the prognostic value of blood lipid and apolipoprotein levels in CRC remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of blood lipid and apolipoprotein levels on the prognosis of patients with stage III and high-risk stage II CRC undergoing curative surgery. Preoperative levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, very-low-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B (APO-B) in patients with CRC undergoing surgery were evaluated. The cut-off values of these factors were determined by the maximal x2 method and were used to classify patients into two prognostic groups: Poor and good prognosis groups. The patients prognostic values were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analysis. In addition, the impact of these parameters on the prognosis and their predictive accuracy were evaluated using nomograms and Harrells concordance index, respectively. In total, 246 patients were included in this evaluation. Based on the cut-off points for TG (1.53 mmol/l in men and 1.58 mmol/l in women) and APO-B (0.73 mmol/l in men and women), the present study determined that both TG and APO-B were predictors of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that high TG (men, ≥1.53 mmol/l; women, ≥1.58 mmol/l) and high APO-B (≥0.73 mmol/l) levels were significantly associated with decreased DFS and OS. Nomograms that included values for TG and APO-B levels demonstrated higher predictive accuracy compared with that of nomograms without these values. These results indicated that TG and APO-B levels may be good independent prognostic biomarkers after radical CRC surgery. Therefore, adjusting these parameters to moderate levels may be beneficial.

Abstract
Background Metabolic-related markers and inflammatory factors have been proved to be associated with increased risk of dyslipidemia. Elucidating the mechanisms underlying these associations might provide an important perspective for the prevention of dyslipidemia. In the present study, we aimed to explore the effect of metabolic-related markers on dyslipidemia, and to assess what extent inflammation mediating these associations. Methods A total of 25,130 participants without dyslipidemia at baseline were included in the present study during 2010–2015. A partial least squares path model was used to explore possible pathways from metabolic-related markers to dyslipidemia, and the mediation role of inflammation. Results Lipid metabolism factor, blood pressure factor, obesity condition factor, glucose metabolism factor, renal function factor and lifestyle factor had diverse impact on development of dyslipidemia, directly and (or) indirectly. Partial least squares path analysis revealed that the determination coefficient of the model (R2) was 0.52. Lipid metabolism factor, obesity condition factor, and glucose metabolism factor had both direct and indirect effect on dyslipidemia through inflammatory factor. Lipid metabolism factor was the most important risk factor (β = 0.68) in the prediction of dyslipidemia, followed by obesity condition factor (β = 0.06) and glucose metabolism factor (β = 0.03). Conclusions Metabolic-related markers are strong risk factors for dyslipidemia. Inflammatory factors have significant mediating effect on these relationships. These findings suggested that comprehensive intervention strategies on metabolic biomarkers and inflammatory factors should be taken into consideration in prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia.
