Enhanced performance of EEG-based brain-computer interfaces by joint sample and feature importance assessment

Electroencephalograph (EEG) has been a reliable data source for building brain-computer interface (BCI) systems; however, it is not reasonable to use the feature vector extracted from multiple EEG channels and frequency bands to perform recognition directly due to the two deficiencies. One is that EEG data is weak and non-stationary, which easily causes different EEG samples to have different quality. The other is that different feature dimensions corresponding to different brain regions and frequency bands have different correlations to a certain mental task, which is not sufficiently investigated. To this end, a Joint Sample and Feature importance Assessment (JSFA) model was proposed to simultaneously explore the different impacts of EEG samples and features in mental state recognition, in which the former is based on the self-paced learning technique while the latter is completed by the feature self-weighting technique. The efficacy of JSFA is extensively evaluated on two EEG data sets, i.e., SEED-IV and SEED-VIG. One is a classification task for emotion recognition and the other is a regression task for driving fatigue detection. Experimental results demonstrate that JSFA can effectively identify the importance of different EEG samples and features, leading to enhanced recognition performance of corresponding BCI systems.

Fast Self-Supervised Clustering With Anchor Graph

Benefit from avoiding the utilization of labeled samples, which are usually insufficient in the real world, unsupervised learning has been regarded as a speedy and powerful strategy on clustering tasks. However, clustering directly from primal data sets leads to high computational cost, which limits its application on large-scale and high-dimensional problems. Recently, anchor-based theories are proposed to partly mitigate this problem and field naturally sparse affinity matrix, while it is still a challenge to get excellent performance along with high efficiency. To dispose of this issue, we first presented a fast semisupervised framework (FSSF) combined with a balanced K -means-based hierarchical K -means (BKHK) method and the bipartite graph theory. Thereafter, we proposed a fast self-supervised clustering method involved in this crucial semisupervised framework, in which all labels are inferred from a constructed bipartite graph with exactly k connected components. The proposed method remarkably accelerates the general semisupervised learning through the anchor and consists of four significant parts: 1) obtaining the anchor set as interim through BKHK algorithm; 2) constructing the bipartite graph; 3) solving the self-supervised problem to construct a typical probability model with FSSF; and 4) selecting the most representative points regarding anchors from BKHK as an interim and conducting label propagation. The experimental results on toy examples and benchmark data sets have demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms other approaches.

Development of an On-Line Defect Detection System for EDM Process

In the electrical discharge machining process, preliminary research has been able to effectively estimate machining accuracy in response to its long machining history and high discharge frequency characteristics. However, when processing abnormalities occur, it is difficult to identify them since the electrical discharge process contains multiple processing parameters, which increases the cost of repair or loss afterwards. Therefore, the question concerning how to monitor the abnormality of the discharge process in real time represents the main purpose of this research. This research develops an EDM process abnormal diagnosis system. First, the data are stored in a circular array to speed up the processing time, and the coefficient of variation feature is added, which has effectively extracted the abnormal characteristics. In terms of diagnostic methods, the composite voting model established by neural networks, random forests, and XGB-RF (extreme gradient boosting applying RF) can provide robust diagnostic results. Finally, through the Node-RED webpage and MQTT agreement, it can provide the ability to monitor machine abnormalities in real time. Through refinement and optimization of the previous research results, this study took the electrical discharge machining diamond grinding wheel as an example, and developed a warning that can be issued within 3 min when abnormalities (abnormal patterns such as polycrystalline diamond high protrusions) occur, with an accuracy of 93% and a false positive rate. The abnormal diagnosis ability is less than 0.2%. Therefore, the online abnormality monitoring system developed by this research institute will be able to provide online abnormality diagnosis for electrical discharge machining.

Discriminative Ridge Machine: A Classifier for High-Dimensional Data or Imbalanced Data

In this article, we introduce a discriminative ridge regression approach to supervised classification. It estimates a representation model while accounting for discriminativeness between classes, thereby enabling accurate derivation of categorical information. This new type of regression model extends the existing models, such as ridge, lasso, and group lasso, by explicitly incorporating discriminative information. As a special case, we focus on a quadratic model that admits a closed-form analytical solution. The corresponding classifier is called the discriminative ridge machine (DRM). Three iterative algorithms are further established for the DRM to enhance the efficiency and scalability for real applications. Our approach and the algorithms are applicable to general types of data including images, high-dimensional data, and imbalanced data. We compare the DRM with current state-of-the-art classifiers. Our extensive experimental results show the superior performance of the DRM and confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
