Deep Learning and Hyperspectral Imaging for Liver Cancer Staging and Cirrhosis Differentiation

Liver malignancies, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), pose a formidable global health challenge. Conventional diagnostic techniques frequently fall short in precision, especially at advanced HCC stages. In response, we have developed a novel diagnostic strategy that integrates hyperspectral imaging with deep learning. This innovative approach captures detailed spectral data from tissue samples, pinpointing subtle cellular differences that elude traditional methods. A sophisticated deep convolutional neural network processes this data, effectively distinguishing high-grade liver cancer from cirrhosis with an accuracy of 89.45%, a sensitivity of 90.29%, and a specificity of 88.64%. For HCC differentiation specifically, it achieves an impressive accuracy of 93.73%, sensitivity of 92.53%, and specificity of 90.07%. Our results underscore the potential of this technique as a precise, rapid, and non-invasive diagnostic tool that surpasses existing clinical methods in staging liver cancer and differentiating cirrhosis.

Study on an Automatic Classification Method for Determining the Malignancy Grade of Glioma Pathological Sections Based on Hyperspectral Multi-Scale Spatial-Spectral Fusion Features

This study describes a novel method for grading pathological sections of gliomas. Our own integrated hyperspectral imaging system was employed to characterize 270 bands of cancerous tissue samples from microarray slides of gliomas. These samples were then classified according to the guidelines developed by the World Health Organization, which define the subtypes and grades of diffuse gliomas. We explored a hyperspectral feature extraction model called SMLMER-ResNet using microscopic hyperspectral images of brain gliomas of different malignancy grades. The model combines the channel attention mechanism and multi-scale image features to automatically learn the pathological organization of gliomas and obtain hierarchical feature representations, effectively removing the interference of redundant information. It also completes multi-modal, multi-scale spatial-spectral feature extraction to improve the automatic classification of glioma subtypes. The proposed classification method demonstrated high average classification accuracy (>97.3%) and a Kappa coefficient (0.954), indicating its effectiveness in improving the automatic classification of hyperspectral gliomas. The method is readily applicable in a wide range of clinical settings, offering valuable assistance in alleviating the workload of clinical pathologists. Furthermore, the study contributes to the development of more personalized and refined treatment plans, as well as subsequent follow-up and treatment adjustment, by providing physicians with insights into the underlying pathological organization of gliomas.

Hyperspectral imaging for non-invasive blood oxygen saturation assessment

Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) seamlessly integrates imaging and spectroscopy, capturing both spatial and spectral data concurrently. With widespread applications in medical diagnostics, HSI serves as a noninvasive tool for gaining insights into tissue characteristics. The distinctive spectral profiles of biological tissues set HSI apart from traditional microscopy in enabling in vivo tissue analysis. Despite its potential, existing HSI techniques face challenges such as alignment issues, low light throughput, and tissue heating due to intense illumination. This study introduces an innovative HSI system featuring active sequential bandpass illumination seamlessly integrated into conventional optical instruments. The primary focus is on analyzing oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin saturation in animal tissue samples using multivariate linear regression. This approach holds promise for enhancing noninvasive medical diagnostics. A key feature of the system, active bandpass illumination, effectively prevents tissue overheating, thereby bolstering its suitability for medical applications.
