Abstract
BACKGROUND The decision to make a quit attempt is the first step toward the tobacco cessation process. It is well established in the literature that if someone does not take tobacco till the age of 21 years then his chances of remaining tobacco-free for life are higher than his counterparts who start tobacco at early developmental ages. METHODOLOGY AND TOOLS The present study was conducted among 400 university undergraduate students. A cross-sectional survey design was used, multi-stage sampling was done, and four colleges were selected via random sampling. The motivation to quit tobacco, tobacco craving, and maintenance of tobacco abstinence was assessed via contemplation ladder, tobacco craving questionnaire Short Form, and smoking abstinence questionnaire. To validate subjective data, a urine cotinine test was performed. RESULTS The age of tobacco initiation significantly impacts intentions to quit tobacco and tobacco craving levels. The number of unsuccessful quit attempts was also significantly associated with the maintenance of tobacco abstinence. The failed quit attempts play a vital role in altering tobacco cravings and make the withdrawals more complicated to handle for recent tobacco quitters.

Abstract
Introduction: There is limited understanding of different predictors of smoking cessation success (SCS) among women and men, despite well-documented differences in smoking behavior.Methods: Using data from DePICT (Description des Perceptions, Images, et Comportements liés au Tabagisme), a national survey of French adults which recruited 2377 regular and former smokers we investigated whether major determinants of SCS differed by sex. Factors associated with unsuccessful vs. No successful quit attempt; vs. SCS were studied using multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses stratified by sex.Results: Women and men share some determinants of SCS including no cannabis use, living in a nonsmoker household and importance giving to being a nonsmoker. However, no e-cigarette use, low-to-moderate alcohol consumption, early smoking initiation, and higher education were associated with SCS only among women. No use of nicotine replacement, having family members who smoke, family opinion on smoking and current employment, were associated with SCS only among men. Neutral or negative friends' opinion on smoking or living with a smoker were associated with unsuccessful smoking attempts among men.Conclusions: Our results show differences between determinants of SCS according to sex, which highlights the importance of developing tailored interventions that account for sex/gender differences in smoking cessation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Wearable sensors may be used for the assessment of behavioral manifestations of cigarette smoking under natural conditions. This paper introduces a new camera-based sensor system to monitor smoking behavior. The goals of this study were (1) identification of the best position of sensor placement on the body and (2) feasibility evaluation of the sensor as a free-living smoking-monitoring tool. METHODS A sensor system was developed with a 5MP camera that captured images every second for continuously up to 26 hours. Five on-body locations were tested for the selection of sensor placement. A feasibility study was then performed on 10 smokers to monitor full-day smoking under free-living conditions. Captured images were manually annotated to obtain behavioral metrics of smoking including smoking frequency, smoking environment, and puffs per cigarette. The smoking environment and puff counts captured by the camera were compared with self-reported smoking. RESULTS A camera located on the eyeglass temple produced the maximum number of images of smoking and the minimal number of blurry or overexposed images (53.9%, 4.19%, and 0.93% of total captured, respectively). During free-living conditions, 286,245 images were captured with a mean (±standard deviation) duration of sensor wear of 647(±74) minutes/participant. Image annotation identified consumption of 5(±2.3) cigarettes/participant, 3.1(±1.1) cigarettes/participant indoors, 1.9(±0.9) cigarettes/participant outdoors, and 9.02(±2.5) puffs/cigarette. Statistical tests found significant differences between manual annotations and self-reported smoking environment or puff counts. CONCLUSIONS A wearable camera-based sensor may facilitate objective monitoring of cigarette smoking, categorization of smoking environments, and identification of behavioral metrics of smoking in free-living conditions. IMPLICATIONS The proposed camera-based sensor system can be employed to examine cigarette smoking under free-living conditions. Smokers may accept this unobtrusive sensor for extended wear, as the sensor would not restrict the natural pattern of smoking or daily activities, nor would it require any active participation from a person except wearing it. Critical metrics of smoking behavior, such as the smoking environment and puff counts obtained from this sensor, may generate important information for smoking interventions.

Abstract
Background: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are sold in France since 2010 and have rapidly become popular. However, factors associated with e-cigarette use among young adults are not well known. Methods: We used data from the 2015 French TEMPO community based cohort study, restricted to current and former smokers with data on e-cigarette use (n = 368 adults, 23-41 years). Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire including information on family status, educational attainment, occupation and type of work contract, health problems, alcohol and cannabis use, electronic cigarette use, as well as perceptions of e-cigarettes. Use of traditional tobacco was assessed in 2011 and 2015. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. Results: Among current and former smokers, 26.9% reported lifetime e-cigarettes use and 15.2% current use. Factors associated with lifetime use were: low socioeconomic position (OR = 2.2; 95% CI = 1.2-4.2), traditional cigarette use (OR associated with smoking in 2011 and 2015 = 13.1; 95% CI = 5.2-32.6) and positive perceptions of e-cigarettes (OR = 4.4; 95% CI = 2.4-8.1) as well as asthma (OR = 2.1; 95% CI = 0.9-4.9) and overweight/obesity (OR = 2.5, 95% CI = 0.9-6.9). Factors associated with current use were traditional cigarette smoking (OR associated with smoking in 2011 and 2015 = 3.9; 95% CI= 1.3-12.2) and positive perceptions of e-cigarettes (OR =4.4; 95% CI = 2.3-8.4). Conclusions: Young adults who use e-cigarettes tend to persist in smoking traditional cigarettes. The conditions under which e-cigarette use can help individuals quit traditional tobacco products remain to be elucidated.

Abstract
Globally, cigarette smoking is widespread among all ages, and smokers struggle to quit. The design of effective cessation interventions requires an accurate and objective assessment of smoking frequency and smoke exposure metrics. Recently, wearable devices have emerged as a means of assessing cigarette use. However, wearable technologies have inherent limitations, and their sensor responses are often influenced by wearers' behavior, motion and environmental factors. This paper presents a systematic review of current and forthcoming wearable technologies, with a focus on sensing elements, body placement, detection accuracy, underlying algorithms and applications. Full-texts of 86 scientific articles were reviewed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to address three research questions oriented to cigarette smoking, in order to: (1) Investigate the behavioral and physiological manifestations of cigarette smoking targeted by wearable sensors for smoking detection; (2) explore sensor modalities employed for detecting these manifestations; (3) evaluate underlying signal processing and pattern recognition methodologies and key performance metrics. The review identified five specific smoking manifestations targeted by sensors. The results suggested that no system reached 100% accuracy in the detection or evaluation of smoking-related features. Also, the testing of these sensors was mostly limited to laboratory settings. For a realistic evaluation of accuracy metrics, wearable devices require thorough testing under free-living conditions.

Abstract
Smoking is the major preventable cause of disease and premature death in many countries, including France, where approximately 30% of adults are daily smokers. About 60% of them want to quit, however, long-term smoking cessation rates are low, particularly among individuals with low socio-economic position. The aim of this study is to examine whether motivations for smoking cessation among young adults differ across socio-economic groups. 3 focus groups of smokers and former smokers aged 22–40 years were constituted and conducted in November 2014 in Paris. Data from the focus groups were analyzed thematically and in a cross-cutting manner. Our study shows the existence of social “communities” of smokers, in occupational and festive contexts. In addition, new forms of resistance to public health messages are observed (“neutralization”), particularly among smokers with low socioeconomic position. Finally, stress is often cited as a source of unsuccessful smoking cessation or smoking relapse. Tobacco smoking is a social behavior and is associated with symbolic as well as relational benefits, particularly among smokers who have low socioeconomic position. To be effective, interventions aiming to decrease smoking levels in the population should aim to create group dynamics encouraging smokers to quit and address the physical as well as the psychological consequences of smoking withdrawal. Young adults who smoke congregate in social “communities”, at work or at parties. Persons with low socioeconomic status “neutralize” the risks related to smoking. Smoking is a social behavior, associated with symbolic and relational benefits.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking has severe health impacts on those who smoke and the people around them. Several wearable sensing modalities have recently been investigated to collect objective data on daily smoking, including detection of smoking episodes from breathing patterns, hand to mouth behavior, and characteristic hand gestures or cigarette lighting events. In order to provide new insight into ongoing research on the objective collection of smoking-related events, this paper proposes a novel method to identify smoking events from the associated changes in heart rate parameters specific to smoking. The proposed method also accounts for the breathing rate and body motion of the person who is smoking to better distinguish these changes from intense physical activities. In this research, a human study was first performed on 20 daily cigarette smokers to record heart rate, breathing rate, and body acceleration collected from a wearable chest sensor consisting of an ECG and bioimpedance measurement sensor and a 3D inertial sensor. Each participant spent ~2 hours in a laboratory environment (mimicking daily activities that included smoking 4 cigarettes) and ~24 hours under unconstrained free-living conditions. A support vector machine-based classifier was developed to automatically detect smoking episodes from the captured sensor signals using fifteen features selected by a forward-feature selection method. In a leave one subject out cross-validation, the proposed approach detected smoking events (187 out of total 232) with the sensitivity and F-score accuracy of 0.87 and 0.79, respectively, in the laboratory setting (known activities) and 0.77 and 0.61, respectively, under free-living conditions. These results validate the proof-of-concept that, although further research is necessary for performance improvement, characteristic changes in heart rate parameters could be a useful indicator of cigarette smoking even under free-living conditions.

Abstract
Young adulthood is a sensitive period characterized by the accumulation of resources and transitions in and out of education, employment, family, and housing arrangements. The association between these characteristics and smoking outcomes likely varies with age yet few studies address its dynamic age-graded nature. To explore this, we examined 2083 young adults ages 18-25 from the 2011-2012 cross-sectional sample of the Montreal-based Interdisciplinary Study of Inequalities in Smoking. We operationalized participants' socioeconomic characteristics using their resources (e.g., education, income, financial difficulties) and transition stages (i.e., studying, working full-time, living arrangements with parents and children, and being in a relationship). We examined differences in these characteristics' associations with occasional and daily smoking across two-year categories (18-19, 20-21, 22-23, and 24-25) using multinomial logistic regression models with age-based interaction terms. Findings highlighted four characteristics, i.e., educational attainment, personal income, student status, and relationship status, with significant differences in associations with smoking outcomes across age categories. Between the age groups of 18-19 and 24-25: 1) the negative association between low educational attainment and daily smoking increased; 2) the positive association between personal income and daily smoking decreased; 3) the negative association between student status and both outcomes decreased; 4) the negative association between relationship status and occasional smoking increased. Findings support that the associations between young adults' socioeconomic characteristics and smoking outcomes vary substantially during the second and third decades of life. Addressing this has critical implications for identifying vulnerable populations and developing appropriate age-based policies in this age group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A substantial proportion of smokers who attempt to stop smoking relapse in the first months. Yet to date, there is limited understanding of the predictors of smoking attempts and their success. We examine the role of tobacco use characteristics, other substance-related factors, as well as socio-demographic characteristics in relation to successful and unsuccessful smoking cessation. METHODS DePICT (Description des Perceptions, Images, et Comportements liés au Tabagisme) is a nationally representative sample of adults aged between 18 and 64years residing in metropolitan France, who were interviewed by telephone survey (n=4342). Among current or former smokers (n=2110) we distinguished participants characterized by: a) no quit attempt or quit <6months; b) unsuccessful smoking cessation (current smokers who previously quit smoking ≥6months); c) successful smoking cessation (≥6months). Factors associated with successful vs. unsuccessful smoking cessation were studied using multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Successful and unsuccessful smoking cessation share some predicting factors including no cannabis use, older age, and intermediate or high occupational grade. Factors specifically associated with successful smoking cessation included no e-cigarette use, no environmental tobacco exposure, fear of the health consequences of smoking, perceived harmfulness of smoking, and high educational attainment and a good overall health. CONCLUSIONS Smokers' environmental tobacco exposure, concurrent cannabis use, and the perception of the health consequences of smoking should be taken into account in efforts aiming to promote smoking cessation at the individual as well as collective levels. Our data also suggest that e-cigarette use is associated with unsuccessful rather than successful smoking cessation, which should be verified in additional, longitudinal, studies.

Abstract
This paper presents the development and validation of a novel multi-sensory wearable system (Personal Automatic Cigarette Tracker v2 or PACT2.0) for monitoring of cigarette smoking in free-living conditions. The contributions of the PACT2.0 system are: (1) the implementation of a complete sensor suite for monitoring of all major behavioral manifestations of cigarette smoking (lighting events, hand-to-mouth gestures, and smoke inhalations); (2) a miniaturization of the sensor hardware to enable its applicability in naturalistic settings; and (3) an introduction of new sensor modalities that may provide additional insight into smoking behavior e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS), pedometer and Electrocardiogram(ECG) or provide an easy-to-use alternative (e.g., bio-impedance respiration sensor) to traditional sensors. PACT2.0 consists of three custom-built devices: an instrumented lighter, a hand module, and a chest module. The instrumented lighter is capable of recording the time and duration of all lighting events. The hand module integrates Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Radio Frequency (RF) transmitter to track the hand-to-mouth gestures. The module also operates as a pedometer. The chest module monitors the breathing (smoke inhalation) patterns (inductive and bio-impedance respiratory sensors), cardiac activity (ECG sensor), chest movement (three-axis accelerometer), hand-to-mouth proximity (RF receiver), and captures the geo-position of the subject (GPS receiver). The accuracy of PACT2.0 sensors was evaluated in bench tests and laboratory experiments. Use of PACT2.0 for data collection in the community was validated in a 24 h study on 40 smokers. Of 943 h of recorded data, 98.6% of the data was found usable for computer analysis. The recorded information included 549 lighting events, 522/504 consumed cigarettes (from lighter data/self-registered data, respectively), 20,158/22,207 hand-to-mouth gestures (from hand IMU/proximity sensor, respectively) and 114,217/112,175 breaths (from the respiratory inductive plethysmograph (RIP)/bio-impedance sensor, respectively). The proposed system scored 8.3 ± 0.31 out of 10 on a post-study acceptability survey. The results suggest that PACT2.0 presents a reliable platform for studying of smoking behavior at the community level.

Abstract
In 2007, Romania implemented a national program for smoking cessation, providing medication and counseling, entirely for free. The present study focuses on the results of the program among participating smokers treated in three smoking cessation centers from three main cities of Romania: Iasi, Targu Mures and Cluj. Telephone interviews of 832 subjects from three databases of the Romanian cessation clinics of Iasi, Cluj and Targu Mures cities were conducted. These interviews were based on a standard Romanian guideline follow-up questionnaire. At 3 months follow up, abstinence was quite high (53.4%); at 12 months post quit date the study found 18.6% still abstinent subjects. More severely addicted smokers have quit with varenicline and the most difficult category of patients was represented by heavy smokers with respiratory co-morbidities. 61.5% of smokers and 97.2% of non-smokers were willing to receive relapse prevention counseling. Many subjects achieved a long duration partial abstinence (154 days ± 180 SD abstinence days). This is the first study in Romanian smoking cessation centers to analyze the long term impact of fully reimbursed smoking cessation, covering three months pharmacotherapy and counseling. Providing smoking cessation for free had a positive long term impact on program participants.

Abstract
Buerger’s disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), is a segmental inflammatory disease affecting small- and medium-sized vessels, which is strongly associated with tobacco use. Although the etiology is still unknown, recent studies suggest an immunopathogenesis. Diagnosis is based on clinical and angiomorphologic criteria, including age, history of smoking, clinical presentation with distal extremity ischemia, and the absence of other risk factors for atherosclerosis, autoimmune disease, hypercoagulable states, or embolic disease. Until now, no causative therapy exists for TAO. The most important therapeutic intervention is smoking cessations and intravenous prostanoid infusions (iloprost). Furthermore, effective analgesia is crucial for the treatment of ischemic and neuropathic pain and might be expanded by spinal cord stimulation. Revascularization procedures do not play a major role in the treatment of TAO due to the distal localization of arterial occlusion. More recently, immunoadsorption has been introduced eliminating vasoconstrictive G-protein-coupled receptor and other autoantibodies. Cell-based therapies and treatment with bosentan were also advocated. Finally, a consequent prevention and treatment of wounds and infections are essential for the prevention of amputations. To achieve better clinical results, integrated care in multidisciplinary and trans-sectoral teams with emphasis on smoking cessation, pain control, wound management, and social care by professionals, social workers, and family members is necessary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE France is one the few European countries offering a national quit line along with partially cost-covered nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and cessation services. This study assesses outcomes and predictors of continued abstinence in French smoking cessation services. METHOD The French national smoking cessation registry (CDTnet) included 23,810 adult smokers followed-up between 2011 and 2013. We assessed 1-month continued abstinence among 10,161 who initiated a quit attempt before or during follow-up. Predictors of abstinence were determined using multivariable regression model. RESULTS Among quitters, 45.2% achieved CO-validated abstinence. Prescription of pharmacotherapy was associated with abstinence rates as high as 47% for combination NRT and 53% for varenicline. The effect of behavioural support associated with combination NRT versus behavioural support alone increased with attendance: OR 1.11 (95% CI 0.89-1.39) for 2-3 visits, OR 1.43 (95% CI 1.13-1.80) for 4-6 visits, OR 1.60 (95% CI 1.21-2.12) for ≥7 visits. Unemployed participants were as likely to be successful as participants in employment (OR 0.88; 95% CI 0.75-1.04). High cigarette dependence also did not significantly hinder abstinence. Young adults achieved the lowest abstinence rates. Predictors that significantly reduced odds of abstinence were: being aged 18 to 24 and a history of alcohol abuse. CONCLUSION With adapted treatment, even the more dependent or less affluent maintained abstinence. Our findings suggest that French cessation services have been successful in providing cessation support. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement in tailoring treatment for some subgroups of smokers.
