Abstract
Two new Ag(I) complexes with coumaric carboxylic acid derivatives have been synthesized. Structural studies of these noncrystalline complexes have been performed using a methodology that combines laboratory and synchrotron techniques, supported by density functional theory calculations. The arrangement of ligands around the Ag(I) cation has been refined using infrared, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopies. Different coordination modes of carboxylate ligands are observed for the studied compounds. Carboxylate bridges are characteristic for the Ag(I) complex with 4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-2-carboxylic acid (1), while a bidentate chelating motif was found for the complex with 2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxylic acid (2). Additionally, the carbonyl oxygen atom of the coumarin ring coordinates to the silver cation in complex 2, while it is inactive in complex 1. Antimicrobial evaluation has been performed for both compounds. The complexes show activity against selected bacteria as well as Candida yeast. This activity is slightly lower for bacteria and the same or higher for Candida in relation to the reference substances: ciprofloxacin or fluconazole.

Abstract
Tackling antimicrobial resistance is of increasing concern in a post-pandemic world where overuse of antibiotics has increased the threat of another pandemic caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Derivatives of coumarins, a naturally occurring bioactive compound, and its metal complexes have proven therapeutic potential as antimicrobial agents and in this study a series of copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of coumarin oxyacetate ligands were synthesised and characterised by spectroscopic techniques (IR, 1H, 13C NMR, UV-Vis) and by X-ray crystallography for two of the zinc complexes. The experimental spectroscopic data were then interpreted on the basis of molecular structure modelling and subsequent spectra simulation using the density functional theory method to identify the coordination mode in solution for the metal ions in the complexes. Interestingly, the solid-state coordination environment of the zinc complexes is in good agreement with the simulated solution state, which has not been the case in our previous studies of these ligands when coordinated to silver(I). Previous studies had indicated excellent antimicrobial activity for Ag(I) analogues of these ligands and related copper and zinc complexes of coumarin-derived ligands, but in this study none of the complexes displayed antimicrobial activity against the clinically relevant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans.

Abstract
This article reports the synthesis, characterization, geometrical optimization, and biological studies of new MBH-based organometallic compounds of medicinal significance. The ligand (MNHA) was prepared via the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) synthetic route, from aromatic aldehyde containing multiple functional groups. Metal complexes were prepared in an alkaline medium and under other suitable reaction conditions. Spectral and elemental analyses were used to identify the structural and molecular formulas of each compound. Optimized geometry was determined through density functional theory (DFT) B3LYP and 6-311++ G (d,p) basis set for the MBH adduct, whereas structures of novel complexes were optimized with the semi-empirical PM6 method. Powder XRD analysis furnished the crystal class of complexes, with Co3+, Cr3+, and Mn2+ being cubic, while Ni2+ was hexagonal, and Cu2+ was orthorhombic. Moreover, the ligand, along with Ni2+ and Co3+ complexes, showed profound antibacterial action against S. aureus, E. coli, B. pumilis, and S. typhi. Additionally, all of the complexes were shown to persist in the positive antioxidant potential of the ligand. Contrarily, not a single metal complex conserved the antifungal potentials of the ligand.

Abstract
A series of 3-nitro-4-aryl-2H-chromen-2-ones in good yields have directly been obtained from aryl alkynoate esters and nitrite by employing a mixture of K2S2O8-nitrogen doped graphene as an oxidant in a watery medium at room temperature. A plausible mechanism for the reaction is also reported. It reveals that the product is formed through a cascade of nitro radical addition, spirocyclization, and ester migration. When compared to known methods for the synthesis of 3-nitro-4-aryl-2H-chromen-2-ones from aryl alkynoate esters, this protocol is environmentally friendly, sustainable, practical and energy efficient and does not use a harmful nitro source. Furthermore, nitrogen doped graphene used in this approach can be easily recovered and reused at least four times without losing its activity.

Abstract
The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an intractable problem for the world. Metal ions are essential for the cell process and biological function in microorganisms. Many metal-based complexes with the potential for releasing ions are more likely to be absorbed for their higher lipid solubility. Hence, this review highlights the clinical potential of organometallic compounds for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria or fungi in recent five years. The common scaffolds, including antimicrobial peptides, N-heterocyclic carbenes, Schiff bases, photosensitive-grand-cycle skeleton structures, aliphatic amines-based ligands, and special metal-based complexes are summarized here. We also discuss their therapeutic targets and the risks that should be paid attention to in the future studies, aiming to provide information for researchers on metal-based complexes as antimicrobial agents and inspire the design and synthesis of new antimicrobial drugs.

Abstract
In the frame of a systematic study on the sequestering ability of natural antioxidants towards metal cations, the complexation of coumarin-3-carboxilic acid (HCCA) with neodymium(III) and dioxouranium(VI) (uranyl, UO22+), and overall stability constants of the resulting complexes, were evaluated from the pH-potentiometric titration data at 37 °C and in an aqueous solution (i.e., 0.16 mol/L NaClO4). The graphic representation of the complex’s concentration curves is given by the distribution diagrams, which provide a depiction of all the species present in the solution in the selected pH ranges. The protonation constant of HCCA was also determined to evaluate the competition of the ligand for the metal cations and H+. The ligand-to-metal concentration ratio was varied between 1 and 10, and the hydrogen ion concentration was decreased stepwise until the incipient precipitation of a basic salt of the metal, which occurred at different values depending on the specific metal cation and the ligand to metal ratio. Speciation profiles obtained by potentiometric titrations and supported by UV-Vis data show that a complexation occurs at a ligand-to-Nd(III) and to –UO22+ ratio of 1:1 and 2:1, with different degrees of deprotonation: Nd(OH)(CCA)+, UO2(OH)(CCA), UO2(OH)2(CCA)−, and Nd(OH)(CCA)2, UO2(CCA)2 and (UO2)2(OH)2(CCA)2.

Abstract
The successfully application of some metallodrugs such as salvarsan, silver sulfadiazine and cisplatin in modern medicine launched the biological investigation of organometallic and metal-organic complexes. The availability and tunability of various ligands including N-heterocycles, phosphines, N-heterocyclic carbenes present an extended research area to chemists. In recent years, the preparation of the metal complexes of bioactive organic compounds is a new strategy. Coumarin derivatives are one of the classes of compounds used for this purpose, and many complexes of coumarin derivatives were prepared for enhanced biological activity, especially anticancer and antimicrobial. In this paper, we discuss the current situation of this topic.

Abstract
In this contribution, a series of sterically-encumbered coumarin substituted benzimidazole-based N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors (1-12) and their silver(I)-NHC complexes (13-24) are reported. Molecular structure of NHC precursors 8 and 12 and cationic complexes 15 and 16 was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The silver(I) complexes demonstrated various significant intramolecular agostic-like interactions operating between the metal center and the hydrogen atoms of the substituents alongside a variety of feeble π-π stacking interactions. A distorted linear coordination geometry is documented at the silver(I) center with the anti-arrangement of the ligands. Further, the complexes demonstrated promising antibacterial properties against Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains, especially complex 18 displayed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 and 4 μg/mL against S. aureus and E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, respectively. Furthermore, complexes 14, 15, 16 and 18 were found cytotoxic against the human lung cancer cell lines A549 and H1975 with the IC50 (concentration of the test sample required to kill 50% of the cell population) value under 10 μM, while mono-NHC complex 20 displayed a potential drug window with the IC50 of 13.7 ± 2.70 and 14.5 ± 1.20 μM against the cancer cell lines H1975 and A549, respectively. Notably, these complexes displayed relatively lesser cytotoxic behaviour against the normal skin fibroblast cell line, Hs68. All the NHC precursors displayed significantly lower biological activities compared with their respective complexes, indicating the utility of silver(I) ions in antimicrobial and antilung cancer applications.

Bioinorg Chem Appl 2017; 2017:6426747. Abstract
Coordination compounds of 4-hydroxy-3-nitro-2H-chromen-2-one and their mixed ligand complexes with aminoethanoic acid and pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid were synthesized by the reaction of Cu(II) and Zn(II) salts in molar ratio 1 : 2 for the coumarin complexes and 1 : 1 : 1 for the mixed ligand complexes, in basic media. The compounds formed were characterized using infrared, Uv-vis spectrophotometric analyses, mass spectrometry, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and EDX analyses. It was concluded that 4-hydroxy-3-nitro-2H-chromen-2-one coordinated as a monobasic ligand for all the complexes; it also coordinated via the carbonyl moiety in the case of the Cu(II) mixed ligand complexes. Similarly it was proposed that the amino acids also coordinated in a bidentate fashion via their amino nitrogen and carboxylate oxygen atoms. The synthesized compounds were screened for their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. The complexes exhibited marginal antimicrobial activity but good cytotoxic activity.

Abstract
A new [Ag(E3Q)2(TCA)] complex; (E3Q=Ethyl 3-quinolinecarboxylate and TCA=Trichloroacetate) has been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR and mass spectroscopy. The molecular geometry and spectroscopic properties of the complex as well as the free ligand have been calculated using the hybrid B3LYP method. The calculations predicted a distorted tetrahedral arrangement around Ag(I) ion. The vibrational spectra of the studied compounds have been assigned using potential energy distribution (PED). TD-DFT method was used to predict the electronic absorption spectra. The most intense absorption band showed a bathochromic shift and lowering of intensity in case of the complex (233.7 nm, f=0.5604) compared to E3Q (λmax=228.0 nm, f=0.9072). The calculated (1)H NMR chemical shifts using GIAO method showed good correlations with the experimental data. The computed dipole moment, polarizability and HOMO-LUMO energy gap were used to predict the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. It is found that Ag(I) enhances the NLO activity. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were used to elucidate the intramolecular charge transfer interactions causing stabilization for the investigated systems.

Abstract
A new silver-carbocysteine (Ccy-Ag) complex [Ag2(Ccy)2(H2O)2] has been synthesized and characterized by using a combination of FTIR, Raman, molar conductivity, (1)H NMR, electronic spectra, thermal analyses, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The infrared spectrum of Ccy-Ag complex in comparison with carbocysteine ligand prove that Ccy behaves as monobasic bidentate chelate to the silver metal ions via the deprotonated carboxylate O atom. The assessments of Ccy and its complexation with Ag(+) in treating COPD, evaluating immune activities through measuring IL-8, TGF-β1, VEGF and TNF-α, antioxidant activities of (Ccy-Ag) complex by measuring SOD, MDA and GPX and bronchial asthma were discussed.

Abstract
The present paper summarizes theoretical and spectroscopic investigations on a series of active coumarins and their lanthanide and transition metal complexes with application in medicine and pharmacy. Molecular modeling as well as IR, Raman, NMR and electronic spectral simulations at different levels of theory were performed to obtain important molecular descriptors: total energy, formation energy, binding energy, stability, conformations, structural parameters, electron density distribution, molecular electrostatic potential, Fukui functions, atomic charges, and reactive indexes. The computations are performed both in gas phase and in solution with consideration of the solvent effect on the molecular structural and energetic parameters. The investigations have shown that the advanced computational methods are reliable for prediction of the metal-coumarin binding mode, electron density distribution, thermodynamic properties as well as the strength and nature of the metal-coumarin interaction (not experimentally accessible) and correctly interpret the experimental spectroscopic data. Known results from biological tests for cytotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-fungal, spasmolytic and anti-HIV activities on the studied metal complexes are reported and discussed.

Abstract
The increased incidence of opportunistic fungal infections, associated with greater resistance to the antifungal drugs currently in use has highlighted the need for new solutions. In this study twenty four coumarin derivatives were screened in vitro for antifungal activity against strains of Aspergillus. Some of the compounds exhibited significant antifungal activity with MICs values ranging between 16 and 32 µg/mL. The structure-activity relationships (SAR) study demonstrated that O-substitutions are essential for antifungal activity. It also showed that the presence of a short aliphatic chain and/or electron withdrawing groups (NO(2) and/or acetate) favor activity. These findings were confirmed using density functional theory (DFT), when calculating the LUMO density. In Principal Component Analysis (PCA), two significant principal components (PCs) explained more than 60% of the total variance. The best Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS) model showed an r2 of 0.86 and q2(cv) of 0.64 corroborating the SAR observations as well as demonstrating a greater probe N1 interaction for active compounds. Descriptors generated by TIP correlogram demonstrated the importance of the molecular shape for antifungal activity.

Abstract
Novel Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) complexes of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (HCCA) were studied at experimental and theoretical levels. The complexes were characterised by elemental analyses, FT-IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and by magnetic susceptibility measurements. The binding modes of the ligand and the spin states of the metal complexes were established by means of molecular modelling of the complexes studied and calculation of their IR, NMR and absorption spectra at DFT(TDDFT)/B3LYP level. The experimental and calculated data verified high spin Ni(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes and a bidentate binding through the carboxylic oxygen atoms (CCA2). The model calculations predicted pseudo octahedral trans-[M(CCA2)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] structures for the Zn(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) complexes and a binuclear [Mn(2)(CCA2)(4)(H(2)O)(2)] structure. Experimental and calculated (1)H, (13)C NMR, IR and UV-Vis data were used to distinguish the two possible bidentate binding modes (CCA1 and CCA2) as well as mononuclear and binuclear structures of the metal complexes.
