Abstract
A series of Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Co(ii), and Pd(ii) complexes have been synthesized with a chelating Schiff base ligand coordinated to a metal center with ONS donor atoms. The ligand and complexes are characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The single crystal structure of the Pd(ii) complex is obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis and exhibits slightly distorted square planar geometry. The structure is optimized by DFT, TD-DFT calculation to elaborate the electronic structure and NBO for the charge distribution analysis of the Pd(ii) complex. The synthesized Pd(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes as catalysts have been investigated in the C-S cross-coupling of indoles and active methylenes. The metal propelled regioselective transformation afforded 3-sulfenylated indoles while β-diketones favored deacylated monosulfenyl ketones in an excellent yield via thiouronium salt formation. The Pd(ii) complex displays slightly better reactivity whereas the Ni(ii) complex is cost-efficient. The method is fast, easy to handle and cost effective in terms of high reactivity of catalysts, use of non-toxic solvents, and cheaper aryl halides and thiourea replace conventional sulfur sources, providing a practical access to organic transformations.

Abstract
Testosterone thiosemicarbazone, L and its nickel (II) complex 1 were synthesized and characterized by using FTIR, CHN, (1)H NMR, and X-ray crystallography. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the formation of L from condensation of testosterone and thiosemicarbazide. Mononuclear complex 1 is coordinated to two Schiff base ligands via two imine nitrogens and two tautomeric thiol sulfurs. The cytotoxicity of both compounds was investigated via MTT assay with cisplatin as positive reference standard. L is more potent towards androgen-dependent LNCaP (prostate) and HCT 116 (colon). On the other hand, complex 1, which is in a distorted square planar environment with L acting as a bidentate NS-donor ligand, is capable of inhibiting the growth of all the cancer cell lines tested, including PC-3 (prostate). It is noteworthy that both compounds are less toxic towards human colon cell CCD-18Co. The intrinsic DNA binding constant (Kb) of both compounds were evaluated via UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Both compounds showed Kb values which are comparable to the reported Kb value of typical classical intercalator such as ethidium bromide. The binding constant of the complex is almost double compared with ligand L. Both compounds were unable to inhibit the action topoisomerase I, which is the common target in cancer treatment (especially colon cancer). This suggest a topoisomerase I independent-cell death mechanism.

Abstract
The title compound, C9H13N4O3+·NO3−, is the first structurally characterized Schiff base derived from semicarbazide and pyridoxal. Unusually for an unsubstituted semicarbazone, the compound adopts asynconformation, in which the carbonyl O atom is in acisdisposition relative to the azomethine N atom. This arrangement is supported by a pair of hydrogen bonds between the organic cation and the nitrate anion. The cation is essentially planar, with only a hydroxymethyl O atom deviating significantly from the mean plane of the remaining atoms (r.m.s. deviation of the remaining non-H atoms = 0.01 Å). The molecules are linked into flat layers by N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds. O—H...O hydrogen bonds involving the hydroxymethyl group as a donor interconnect the layers into a three-dimensional structure.

Abstract
Infrared and Raman spectroscopic analyses were carried out on 4-butyl-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-3,5-pyrazolidinedione. The interpretation of the spectra was aided by DFT calculation of the molecule. The vibrational wavenumbers were examined theoretically using the Gaussian03 set of quantum chemistry codes and the normal modes were assigned by potential energy distribution calculations. A computation of the first hyperpolarizability of the compound indicates that the compound may be a good candidate as a NLO material. Optimized geometrical parameters are in agreement with the reported XRD results. The RMS error of the observed Raman bands and IR bands are found to be 35.09 and 39.57 for HF method and 14.31 and 17.17 for DFT method. The predicted infrared intensities and Raman activities are reported.

Abstract
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(C9H12N4O3)2](NO3)2·2H2O, consists of a discrete cationic [Co(PLSC)2]2+ complex unit [PLSC is 4-(2-carbamoylhydrazin-1-ylidene)-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methylpyridinium-3-olato], two NO3− and two water molecules. The two tridentate PLSC ligands of the cation are zwitterions related to each other by a non-crystallographic C2 axis. The CoII ion is in a disorted octahedral coordination environment. The crystal structure is composed of alternating NO3/H2O and complex layers supported by extensive C—H⋯O, N—H⋯O and N—H⋯N hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
The multifunctional ligand, thiosemicarbazide, was physically loaded on neutral alumina. The produced alumina-modified solid phase (SP) extractor named, alumina-modified thiosemicarbazide (AM-TSC), experienced high thermal and medium stability. This new phase was identified based on surface coverage determination by thermal desorption method to be 0.437+/-0.1 mmol g(-1). The selectivity of AM-TSC phase towards the uptake of different nine metal ions was checked using simple, fast and direct batch equilibration technique. AM-TSC was found to have the highest capacity in selective extraction of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions all over the range of pH used (1.0-7.0), compared to the other eight tested metal ions. So, Hg(II) uptake was 1.82 mmol g(-1) (distribution coefficient log K(d)=5.658) at pH 1.0 or 2.0 and 1.78, 1.73, 1.48, 1.28 and 1.28 mmol g(-1) (log K(d)=4.607, 4.265, 3.634, 3.372 and 3.372), at pH 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0, respectively. On the other hand, the metal ions Ca(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) showed low uptake values in range 0.009-0.720 mmol g(-1) (log K(d)<3.0) at their optimum pH values. A mechanism was suggested to explain the unique uptake of Hg(II) ions based on their binding as neutral and chloroanionic species predominate at pH values < or =3.0 of a medium rich in chloride ions. Application of the new phase for the preconcentration of ultratrace amounts of Hg(II) ions spiked natural water samples: doubly distilled water (DDW), drinking tap water (DTW) and Nile river water (NRW) using cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS) was studied. The high recovery values obtained using AM-TSC (98.5+/-0.5, 98.0+/-0.5 and 103.0+/-1.0) for DDW, DTW and NRW samples, respectively based on excellent enrichment factor 1000, along with a good precision (R.S.D.% 0.51-0.97%, n=3) demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the new modified alumina sorbent for preconcentrating ultratrace amounts of Hg(II) with no matrix interference.
