Structural characterization of [Fe(NO)(mnt)2]1−/2− salts

Exploring the Electrochemistry of Iron Dithiolene and Its Potential for Electrochemical Homogeneous Carbon Dioxide Reduction

In this work, the dithiolene complex iron(III) bis-maleonitriledithiolene [Fe(mnt)2] is characterised and evaluated as a homogeneous CO2 reduction catalyst. Electrochemically the Fe(mnt)2 is reduced twice to the trianionic Fe(mnt)2 3- state, which is correspondingly found to be active towards CO2. Interestingly, the first reduction event appears to comprise overlapping reversible couples, attributed to the presence of both a dimeric and monomeric form of the dithiolene complex. In acetonitrile Fe(mnt)2 demonstrates a catalytic response to CO2 yielding typical two-electron reduction products: H2, CO and CHOOH. The product distribution and yield were governed by the proton source. Operating with H2O as the proton source gave only H2 and CO as products, whereas using 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol gave 38 % CHOOH faradaic efficiency with H2 and CO as minor products.

Syntheses, spectroscopic, redox, and structural properties of homoleptic Iron(III/II) dithione complexes

Two sets of FeIII/II dithione complexes [FeII( i Pr2Dt0)3][PF6]2 ([1][PF6]2), [FeII(Me2Dt0)3][PF6]2 ([2][PF6]2), and [FeIII( i Pr2Dt0)3][PF6]3 ([3][PF6]3), [FeIII(Me2Dt0)3][PF6]3 ([4][PF6]3), and compound [FeIII( i Pr2Dt0)3][FeCl4][PF]2 ([3][FeCl4][PF6]2) were synthesized from N,N'-diisopropyl piperazine-2,3-dithione ( i Pr2Dt0) and N,N'-dimethyl piperazine-2,3-dithione (Me2Dt0) ligands. Complexes [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 have been characterized by NMR, IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies, and by electrochemistry. The molecular structures of [2][PF6]2 and [3][FeCl4][PF6]2 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Complexes [2][PF6]2 and [3][FeCl4][PF6]2 both crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n. Both complexes exhibit distorted octahedral geometry and the three coordinated ligands in each complex exhibit different dithione folding. Complexes [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 exhibit a single FeIII/II based couple and three quasi-reversible ligand-based redox couples. The electronic spectra of [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 show intense MLCT bands that indicate strong mixing between metal and ligand orbitals. DFT calculations were used to provide a framework for understanding the electronic origin of their redox chemistry and spectroscopic features.

Synthesis and structural characterization of transition metal dithiolene derivatives containing divalent metals as counter-cations

Complexes containing [Fe₂(SC₆H₂Cl₂S)₄]²⁻ or [Ni(SC₆H₂Cl₂S)₂]⁻ entities and divalent metal cations as well as an 1D-coordination polymer K/Zn have been obtained and their magnetic behaviour studied.
