Abstract
A bis-BODIPY-based fluorescent probe (BODIPY-NN) is developed for Cu2+ detection in aqueous solutions and living cells. The sensing mechanism is based on the in situ generation of a benzimidazole–triazole receptor induced by Cu2+ ions.

Abstract
D-fructose, a biomass-derived carbohydrate has been identified as an environmentally benign C2 synthon in the preparation of synthetically useful 2-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole derivatives by coupling with 1,2-phenylenediamines. Proof of concept was established by synthesizing 23 examples using BF3 .OEt2 (20 mol%), TBHP (5.5 M, decane) (1.0 equiv.) in CH3 CN at 90 °C for 1 h. The pivotal features of this method include metal-free conditions, short time, good functional group tolerance, gram scale feasibility and the synthesis of benzimidazole fused 1,4-oxazine. Control studies with conventional C2 synthons did not produce the desired product, thus suggesting a new reaction pathway from D-fructose.

Complexes in aqueous cobalt(II)-2-picolinehydroxamic acid system: Formation equilibria, DNA-binding ability, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. J Inorg Biochem 2018; 187:62-72. [PMID: 30055397 DOI: 10.1016/j.jinorgbio.2018.07.010] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/05/2018] [Revised: 06/20/2018] [Accepted: 07/19/2018] [Indexed: 11/24/2022]
Abstract
The coordination properties of 2-picolinehydroxamic acid towards cobalt(II) in aqueous solution were determined by a pH-metric method and confirmed by spectroscopic (UV-Vis and ESI-MS) studies. The results show the formation of mononuclear complexes, as well as of metallacrowns (MC). All methods indicate a high tendency of 2-picolinehydroxamic acid to form cobalt(II) metallacrown 12-MC-4. ESI-MS additionally confirms 15-MC-5 and 18-MC-6, stabilized by a sodium ion and methanol. The complexes observed in the speciation model at a pH about 7.2 were studied for their DNA-binding ability. The decrease of absorbance in the range of ca 310-400 nm indicates effective binding to calf thymus DNA by 2-picolinehydroxamic acid complexes, via intercalative mode. The antimicrobial properties of 2-picolinehydroxamic acid, cobalt(II) ions and of the complexes formed in the Co(II) - ligand system were determined against Gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Helicobacter pylori) and fungal strains (Candida, Aspergillus niger). The results indicate that the complexes demonstrate greater antibacterial and antifungal activity for most strains than the ligand. Both the complexes and the ligand induce a slight decrease in the metabolic activity of cells, while the complexes do not damage the cell nuclei. The 2-picolinehydroxamic acid complexes activate the human monocytic cells, suggesting they have immunomodulating properties, which are particularly important in combating infections caused by strains resistant to other drugs.

Abstract
Selected aspects of the biological activity of a series of six nitrate silver(I) complexes with pyridine and (benz)imidazole derivatives were investigated. The present study evaluated the antibacterial activities of the complexes against three Gram-negative strains: Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Proteus hauseri ATCC 13315. The results were compared with those of silver nitrate, a silver sulfadiazine drug and appropriate ligands. The most significant antibacterial properties were exerted by silver(I) complexes containing benzimidazole derivatives. The cytotoxic activity of the complexes was examined against B16 (murine melanoma) and 10T1/2 (murine fibroblasts) cells. All of the tested silver(I) compounds were not toxic to fibroblast cells in concentration inhibited cancer cell (B16) viability by 50%, which ranged between 2.44–28.65 µM. The molecular and crystal structure of silver(I) complex of 2,6-di(hydroxymethyl)pyridine was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The most important features of the crystal packing and intermolecular non-covalent interactions in the Ag(I) complex were quantified via Hirshfeld surface analysis.
