CYCU-3: an Al(III)-based MOF for SO2 capture and detection

The Al(III)-based MOF CYCU-3 exhibits a relevant SO2 adsorption performance with a total uptake of 11.03 mmol g-1 at 1 bar and 298 K. CYCU-3 displays high chemical stability towards dry and wet SO2 exposure. DRIFTS experiments and computational calculations demonstrated that hydrogen bonding between SO2 molecules and bridging Al(III)-OH groups are the preferential adsorption sites. In addition, photoluminescence experiments demonstrated the relevance of CYCU-3 for application in SO2 detection with good selectivity for SO2 over CO2 and H2O. The change in fluorescence performance demonstrates a clear turn-on effect after SO2 interaction. Finally, the suppression of ligand-metal energy transfer along with the enhancement of ligand-centered π* → π electronic transition was proposed as a plausible fluorescence mechanism.

MFM-300(Sc): a chemically stable Sc(III)-based MOF material for multiple applications

Developing robust multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the key to advancing the further deployment of MOFs into relevant applications. Since the first report of MFM-300(Sc) (MFM = Manchester Framework Material, formerly known as NOTT-400), the development of applications of this robust microporous MOF has only grown. In this review, a summary of the applications of MFM-300(Sc), as well as some emerging advanced applications, have been discussed. The adsorption properties of MFM-300(Sc) are presented systematically. Particularly, this contribution is focused on acid and corrosive gas adsorption. In addition, recent applications for catalysis based on the outstanding hemilabile Sc-O bond character are highlighted. Finally, some new research areas are introduced, such as host-guest chemistry and biomedical applications. This highlight aims to showcase the recent advances and the potential for developing new applications of this promising material.

High Gravimetric and Volumetric Ammonia Capacities in Robust Metal-Organic Frameworks Prepared via Double Postsynthetic Modification

Ammonia is a promising energy vector that can store the high energy density of hydrogen. For this reason, numerous adsorbents have been investigated as ammonia storage materials, but ammonia adsorbents with a high gravimetric/volumetric ammonia capacity that can be simultaneously regenerated in an energy-efficient manner remain underdeveloped, which hampers their practical implementation. Herein, we report Ni_acryl_TMA (TMA = thiomallic acid), an acidic group-functionalized metal-organic framework prepared via successive postsynthetic modifications of mesoporous Ni₂Cl₂BTDD (BTDD = bis(1H-1,2,3,-triazolo [4,5-b],-[4',5'-i]) dibenzo[1,4]dioxin). By virtue of the densely located acid groups, Ni_acryl_TMA exhibited a top-tier gravimetric ammonia capacity of 23.5 mmol g^-1 and the highest ammonia storage of 0.39 g cm^-3 at 1 bar and 298 K. The structural integrity and ammonia storage capacity of Ni_acryl_TMA were maintained after ammonia adsorption-desorption tests over five cycles. Temperature-programmed desorption analysis revealed that the moderate strength of the interaction between the functional groups and ammonia significantly reduced the desorption temperature compared to that of the pristine framework with open metal sites. The structures of the postsynthetic modified analogues were elucidated based on Pawley/Rietveld refinement of the synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction patterns and van der Waals (vdW)-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the ammonia adsorption mechanism was investigated via in situ infrared and vdW-corrected DFT calculations, revealing an atypical guest-induced binding mode transformation of the integrated carboxylate. Dynamic breakthrough tests showed that Ni_acryl_TMA can selectively capture traces of ammonia under both dry and wet conditions (80% relative humidity). These results demonstrate that Ni_acryl_TMA is a superior ammonia storage/capture material.

Zirconium and Aluminum MOFs for Low-Pressure SO2 Adsorption and Potential Separation: Elucidating the Effect of Small Pores and NH2 Groups

Finding new adsorbents for the desulfurization of flue gases is a challenging task but is of current interest, as even low SO₂ emissions impair the environment and health. Four Zr- and eight Al-MOFs (Zr-Fum, DUT-67(Zr), NU-1000, MOF-808, Al-Fum, MIL-53(Al), NH₂-MIL-53(Al), MIL-53(tdc)(Al), CAU-10-H, MIL-96(Al), MIL-100(Al), NH₂-MIL-101(Al)) were examined toward their SO₂ sorption capability. Pore sizes in the range of about 4-8 Å are optimal for SO₂ uptake in the low-pressure range (up to 0.1 bar). Pore widths that are only slightly larger than the kinetic diameter of 4.1 Å of the SO₂ molecules allow for multi-side-dispersive interactions, which translate into high affinity at low pressure. Frameworks NH₂-MIL-53(Al) and NH₂-MIL-101(Al) with an NH₂-group at the linker tend to show enhanced SO₂ affinity. Moreover, from single-gas adsorption isotherms, ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivities toward binary SO₂/CO₂ gas mixtures were determined with selectivity values between 35 and 53 at a molar fraction of 0.01 SO₂ (10.000 ppm) and 1 bar for the frameworks Zr-Fum, MOF-808, NH₂-MIL-53(Al), and Al-Fum. Stability tests with exposure to dry SO₂ during ≤10 h and humid SO₂ during 5 h showed full retention of crystallinity and porosity for Zr-Fum and DUT-67(Zr). However, NU-1000, MOF-808, Al-Fum, MIL-53(tdc), CAU-10-H, and MIL-100(Al) exhibited ≥50-90% retained Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)-surface area and pore volume; while NH₂-MIL-100(Al) and MIL-96(Al) demonstrated a major loss of porosity under dry SO₂ and MIL-53(Al) and NH₂-MIL-53(Al) under humid SO₂. SO₂ binding sites were revealed by density functional theory (DFT) simulation calculations with adsorption energies of -40 to -50 kJ·mol^-1 for Zr-Fum and Al-Fum and even above -50 kJ·mol^-1 for NH₂-MIL-53(Al), in agreement with the isosteric heat of adsorption near zero coverage (ΔH_ads⁰). The predominant, highest binding energy noncovalent binding modes in both Zr-Fum and Al-Fum feature μ-OH^δ+···^δ-OSO hydrogen bonding interactions. The small pores of Al-Fum allow the interaction of two μ-OH bridges from opposite pore walls with the same SO₂ molecule via OH^δ+···^δ-OSO^δ-···^δ+HO hydrogen bonds. For NH₂-MIL-53(Al), the DFT high-energy binding sites involve NH^δ+···^δ-OS together with the also present Al-μ-OH^δ+···^δ-OS hydrogen bonding interactions and C₆-π^δ-···^δ+SO₂, N^δ-···^δ+SO₂ interactions.
