Effect of Octene Block Copolymer (OBC) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) on Crystalline Morphology, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Octene Random Copolymer. Polymers (Basel) 2023; 15:3655. Abstract
Blending octene random copolymer (ORC) with other polymers is a promising approach to improving ORC mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and elongation. In this study, octene block copolymer (OBC) with lower density than ORC and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were used to blend with ORC. The effect of both OBC and HDPE on ORC was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). For ORC/OBC blends, a small amount of OBC can improve the crystallization ability of ORC. Meanwhile, for ORC/HDPE blends, the crystallization ability of ORC was significantly suppressed, attributed to good compatibility between ORC and HDPE as indicated by the homogeneous morphology and the disappearance of the α transition peak of ORC in ORC/HDPE blends. Therefore, the tensile strength and elongation of ORC/HDPE blends are significantly higher than those of ORC/OBC blends. For ORC/OBC/HDPE ternary blends, we found that when ORC:OBC:HDPE are at a ratio of 70:15:15, cocrystallization is achieved. Although HDPE improves the compatibility of ORC and OBC, the three-phase structure of the ternary blends can be observed through SAXS when HDPE and OBC exceed 30 wt%. Blending HDPE and OBC (≤30 wt%) could improve the mechanical property of ORC.

Abstract
Olefin block copolymer (OBC), with its low hard segments, can form unique space-filling spherulites other than confined-crystallization morphologies, mainly due to its weak phase-separation. In this work, 1,3;2,4-Bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS), a well-known nucleating agent, was used to tailor the crystallization behavior and crystalline morphology of OBC. It was found that DMDBS can precipitate within an OBC matrix and self-assemble into crystalline fibrils when cooling from the melt. A non-isothermal crystallization process exhibited an increased crystallization rate and strong composition dependence. During the isothermal crystallization process, DMDBS showed a more obvious nucleating efficiency at a higher crystallization temperature. OBC showed typical spherulites when DMDBS was added. Moreover, a low addition of DMDBS significantly decreased the crystal size, while a large addition of DMDBS induced aggregates, due to the limited miscibility of DMDBS with OBC. The efficient nucleating effect of DMDBS on OBC led to an increased optical transparency for OBC/DMDBS composites.

Abstract
Since selectively swollen thermoplastic elastomer gels (TPEGs) afford a wide range of beneficial properties that open new doors to developing elastomer-based technologies, we examine the unique structure-property behavior of TPEGs composed of olefinic block copolymers (OBCs) in this study. Unlike their styrenic counterparts typically possessing two chemically different blocks, this class of multiblock copolymers consists of linear polyethylene hard blocks and poly(ethylene-co-α-octene) soft blocks, in which case, microphase separation between the hard and the soft blocks is accompanied by crystallization of the hard blocks. Here, we prepare olefinic TPEGs (OTPEGs) through the incorporation of a primarily aliphatic oil that selectively swells the soft block and investigate the resultant morphological features through the use of polarized light microscopy and small-/wide-angle X-ray scattering. These features are correlated with thermal and mechanical property measurements from calorimetry, rheology, and extensiometry to elucidate the roles of crystallization and self-assembly on gel characteristics and establish useful structure-property relationships.

Abstract
As a type of novel semi-crystalline block copolymers, the final properties of olefin block copolymers (OBCs) greatly depend on the crystalline and phase-separated structures. In the present work, we systematically investigated the influence of self-nucleation and annealing on the lamellar and mesophase-separated structure of OBCs. According to the crystalline and melting behavior after self-nucleation and annealing treatments, four different regimes can be recognized with the self-seeding temperature Ts varying from 125 to 109 °C. In regime A, only self-nucleation occurs, while it coexists with lamellar thickening in regime B. In regime C, there is only lamellar thickening behavior. The lamellar thickening induced inconsecutive lamellar crystals observed revealed that the rearrangement of the hard blocks, which are next to the soft blocks and trapped in the intermediate regime between crystalline and amorphous phases, into neighboring lamellar crystals should be the mechanism for the lamellar thickening of the OBCs. Surprisingly, no lamellar thickening occurs and a new small melting peak appears at lower temperatures in regime D. Considering the block dispersity of OBCs, the emergence of a small melting peak at lower temperatures can be attributed to the crystallization of the ethylene sequence with relatively weaker crystallization abilities, which are not able to crystallize in a standard crystalline state. Based on these findings, we gained some new understandings on lamellar thickening behavior of OBCs and established the self-nucleation and annealing process as a powerful tool for tuning the crystalline and phase-separated structures of OBCs.
