Cyclodextrins-Based Polyrotaxanes: From Functional Polymers to Applications in Electronics and Energy Storage Materials

The concept of polyrotaxane comes from the rotaxane structure in the supramolecular field. It is a mechanically interlocked supramolecular assembly composed of linear polymer chains and cyclic molecules. Over recent decades, the synthesis and application of polyrotaxanes have seen remarkable growth. Particularly, cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes have been extensively reported due to the low-price raw materials, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. Hence, it is also one of the most promising mechanically interlocking supramolecules for wide industrialization in the future. Polyrotaxanes are widely introduced into materials such as elastomers, hydrogels, and engineering polymers to improve their mechanical properties or impart functionality to the materials. In these materials, polyrotaxane acts as a slidable cross-linker to dissipate energy through sliding or assist in dispersing stress concentration in the cross-linked network, thereby enhancing the toughness of the materials. Further, the unique sliding-ring effect of cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes has pioneered advancements in stretchable electronics and energy storage materials. This includes their innovative use in stretchable conductive composite and binders for anodes, addressing critical challenges in these fields. In this mini-review, our focus is to highlight the current progress and potential wider applications in the future, underlining their transformative impact across various domains of material science.

Polyhydroxyurethane and Poly(ethylene oxide) Multiblock Copolymer Networks: Crosslinking with Polysilsesquioxane, Reprocessing and Solid Polyelectrolyte Properties

This contribution reports the synthesis of polyhydroxyurethane (PHU)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) multiblock copolymer networks crosslinked with polysilsesquioxane (PSSQ). First, the linear PHU-PEO multiblock copolymers were synthesized via the step-growth polymerization of bis(6-membered cyclic carbonate) (B6CC) with α,ω-diamino-terminated PEOs with variable molecular weights. Thereafter, the PHU-PEO copolymers were allowed to react with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS) to afford the derivatives bearing triethoxysilane moieties, the hydrolysis and condensation of which afforded the PHU-PEO networks crosslinked with PSSQ. It was found that the PHU-PEO networks displayed excellent reprocessing properties in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonate [Zn(OTf)2]. Compared to the PHU networks crosslinked via the reaction of difunctional cyclic carbonate with multifunctional amines, the organic-inorganic PHU networks displayed the decreased reprocessing temperature. The metathesis of silyl ether bonds is responsible for the improved reprocessing behavior. By adding lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiOTf), the PHU-PEO networks were further transformed into the solid polymer electrolytes. It was found that the crystallization of PEO chains in the crosslinked networks was significantly suppressed. The solid polymer electrolytes had the ionic conductivity as high as 7.64 × 10-5 S × cm-1 at 300 K. More importantly, the solid polymer electrolytes were recyclable; the reprocessing did not affect the ionic conductivity.

Strain-induced crystallization and phase separation used for fabricating a tough and stiff slide-ring solid polymer electrolyte

The demand for mechanically robust polymer-based electrolytes is increasing for applications to wearable devices. Young's modulus and breaking energy are essential parameters for describing the mechanical reliability of electrolytes. The former plays a vital role in suppressing the short circuit during charge-discharge, while the latter indicates crack propagation resistance. However, polymer electrolytes with high Young's moduli are generally brittle. In this study, a tough slide-ring solid polymer electrolyte (SR-SPE) breaking through this trade-off between stiffness and toughness is designed on the basis of strain-induced crystallization (SIC) and phase separation. SIC makes the material highly tough (breaking energy, 80 to 100 megajoules per cubic meter). Phase separation in the polymer enhanced stiffness (Young's modulus, 10 to 70 megapascals). The combined effect of phase separation and SIC made SR-SPE tough and stiff, while these mechanisms do not impair ionic conductivity. This SIC strategy could be combined with other toughening mechanisms to design tough polymer gel materials.

An initiator-free and solvent-free in-situ self-catalyzed crosslinked polymer electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries

Linear polymer (e.g. polyethylene oxide, PEO) based electrolytes have been widely studied due to their flexibility and relatively good contact against electrodes. However, the linear polymers are prone to crystallization at room temperature and melting at moderate temperature, restricting their application in lithium metal batteries. To address these problems, a self-catalyzed crosslinked polymer electrolyte (CPE) was designed and prepared by the reaction of poly (ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) (PEGDGE) and polyoxypropylenediamine (PPO) with only the bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) added and with no any initiators. LiTFSI catalyzed the reaction by reducing the activation energy to form a crosslinked network structure, which was identified by calculation, NMR and FTIR. The as-prepared CPE has high resilience and a low glass transition temperature (Tg = -60 °C). Meanwhile, the solvent-free in-situ polymerization technique has been adopted in the assembly of the CPE with electrodes to decrease the interfacial impedance greatly and improve the ionic conductivity to 2.05 × 10^-5 S cm^-1 and 2.55 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at room temperature and 75 °C, respectively. As a result, the in-situ LiFeO₄/CPE/Li battery exhibits outstanding thermal and electrochemical stability at 75 °C. Our work has proposed an initiator-free and solvent-free in-situ self-catalyzed strategy of preparing high performance crosslinked solid polymer electrolytes.

Ultrathin Solid Polymer Electrolyte Design for High-Performance Li Metal Batteries: A Perspective of Synthetic Chemistry

Li metal batteries (LMBs) have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their high energy densities. But traditional LMBs using liquid electrolyte have potential safety hazards, such as: leakage and flammability. Replacing liquid electrolyte with solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) can not only significantly improve the safety, but also improve the energy density of LMBs. However, till now, there is only limited success in improving the various physical and chemical properties of SPE, especially in thickness, posing great obstacles to further promoting its fundamental and applied studies. In this review, the authors mainly focus on evaluating the merits of ultrathin SPE and summarizing its existing challenges as well as fundamental requirements for designing and manufacturing advanced ultrathin SPE in the future. Meanwhile, the authors outline existing cases related to this field as much as possible and summarize them from the perspective of synthetic chemistry, hoping to provide a comprehensive understanding and serve as a strategic guidance for designing and fabricating high-performance ultrathin SPE. Challenges and opportunities regarding this burgeoning field are also critically evaluated at the end of this review.

Chemorheological Monitoring of Cross-Linking in Slide-ring Gels Derived From α-cyclodextrin Polyrotaxanes

Despite hundreds of studies involving slide-ring gels derived from cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxanes (PRs), their covalent cross-linking kinetics are not well characterized. We employ chemorheology as a tool to measure the gelation kinetics of a model slide-ring organogel derived from α-cyclodextrin/poly (ethylene glycol) PRs cross-linked with hexamethylenediisocyanate (HMDI) in DMSO. The viscoelastic properties of the gels were monitored in situ by small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) rheology, enabling us to estimate the activation barrier and rate law for cross-linking while mapping experimental parameters to kinetics and mechanical properties. Gelation time, gel point, and final gel elasticity depend on cross-linker concentration, but polyrotaxane concentration only affects gelation time and elasticity (not gel point), while temperature only affects gelation time and gel point (not final elasticity). These measurements facilitate the rational design of slide-ring networks by simple parameter selection (temperature, cross-linker concentration, PR concentration, reaction time).

Polyurethane-Based Gel Electrolyte for Application in Flexible Electrochromic Devices

For the application in flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs) on plastic substrates, a new polyurethane-based gel electrolyte was manufactured. In this context, the curing behavior and the influence of the proportion of solvent and salt on the ion conductivity as well as the optical and mechanical properties were investigated. Furthermore, the stoichiometric ratio of the polyurethane matrix was varied to influence the ion conductivity. As an isocyanate component, the aliphatic difunctional polyisocyanate prepolymer, synthesized by Hexamethylen-1,6-diisocyanat (HDI), was chosen since the resulting polyurethane is considered to be particularly lightfast, color-stable and temperature-resistant and therefore frequently used for paints and coatings. As polyol a trifunctional polyetherpolyol was selected to form a wide-meshed crosslinked matrix to achieve a mechanically stable but flexible electrolyte, that enables the processing and bending of film-based ECDs. The additives amount and the matrix stoichiometric ratio affected the curing behavior and curability. The salt content had almost no influence on the measured properties in the chosen experimental space. Solvent content had a great influence on ion conductivity and mechanical properties. An understoichiometric ratio of the polyurethane matrix (0.85) increases the ion conductivity and the mechanical flexibility, but also the optical properties in a negative manner. The best specific ion conductivity with 10−5 S/cm was reached with an understoichiometric ratio of 0.85 and a high solvent content (30 wt%). Concluding, due to its high flexibility and transmittance, color neutrality and sufficient ion conductivity, the application of the researched electroyte in ECDs might be suitable. A demonstrator ECD was successfully manufactured and conducted.

Post-synthesis modification of slide-ring gels for thermal and mechanical reconfiguration

Ring-sliding behavior in polyrotaxanes imbues gels, elastomers, and glasses with remarkable stress-dissipation and actuation properties. Since these properties can be modulated and tuned by structural parameters, many efforts have been devoted to developing synthetic protocols that define the structures and properties of slide-ring materials. We introduce post-synthetic modifications of slide-ring gels derived from unmodified α-cyclodextrin and poly(ethylene glycol) polyrotaxanes that enable (i) actuation and control of the thermo-responsive lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior of ring-modified slide-ring hydrogels, and (ii) chemically bonding separate gels into hybrid or shape-reconfigured macro-structures with a slide-ring adhesive solution. The mechanical properties of the post-modified gels have been characterized by shear rheology and uniaxial tensile tests, while the corresponding xerogels were characterized by wide-angle X-ray scattering. These demonstrations show that post-synthetic modification offers a practical solution for re-configuring the properties and shapes of slide-ring gels.

Solid solid phase change (SSPC) chitosan-g-mPEG fiber with improved mechanical performance via in-situ wet spinning process

Nowadays, environment-friendly and sustainable polymers have aroused great research attention, due to serious pollution caused by nondegradable and nonrenewable polymer waste. In this paper, chitosan (CS) grafted polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (mPEG) (CS-g-mPEG) fiber, with solid-solid phase change (SSPC) behavior and improved mechanical performance, were prepared successfully by in-situ wet spinning process. The tensile strength of CS-g-mPEG fiber reached 1.36 cN/dtex, increased by more than 50 % contrasted with CS fiber, due to the enhancement of molecular entanglement and hydrogen bonding interactions. Particularly, CS-g-mPEG fiber with stable shape could actively absorb heat as ambient temperature above 46 °C, then would release heat as ambient temperature below 26 °C. So, the human body will not feel too cold or heat. Thus, this work do not only give a continuous process of fabricating SSPC CS-g-mPEG fiber for industry, but also provides an important choice for smart textiles.
