Morphology and Thermodynamic Study of a Novel Composite Membrane from Waste Polystyrene/Slag: Experimental Investigation

The development of the membrane surface and cross-sectional morphology is pivotal in influencing the effectiveness of membrane separation. In this study, evaluating the separation rates between the solvent and nonsolvent in the casting solution and the related thermodynamic alteration analysis were illustrated. Additionally, the rheological variations were determined by measuring the viscosity of the resulting dope solutions, providing an initial estimation of the phase separation kinetics. Asymmetric polystyrene (PS)/slag composite membrane, incorporating slag waste as an inorganic additive, was developed. Dimethylformamide (DMF) was utilized as the solvent, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was employed as an anionic surfactant to facilitate the casting process. A tertiary system diagram approach involving waste PS, DMF, and water introducing slag as an inorganic additive and SDS as a surfactant was attained to promote the separation of the solvent and nonsolvent in the casting solution. These novel composite mixtures exhibited increased thermodynamic instability within the coagulation bath, facilitating the rapid separation of solid membranes from the dope solutions and forming composite membranes with significantly increased porosity (exceeding a 20% increase) compared to that of plain waste materials. The composite membrane characteristics were assessed with the widely used poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) membrane, showing comparative features and performance when tested on a membrane distillation (MD) cell; it gave a flux of 1 kg/m2·h. These promising characteristics positioned this novel PS/slag composite membrane as a candidate for various water-related applications.

Nano-silica from white silica sand functionalized with PANI-SDS (SiO2/PANI-SDS) as an adsorbent for the elimination of methylene blue from aqueous media

Natural resources including sand are one of the best approaches for treating dye-polluted wastewater. The SiO2/PANI-SDS nanocomposite was synthesized by self-assembly and intermolecular interaction. The physicochemical features of the SiO2/PANI-SDS nanocomposite were explored by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques to be evaluated as an adsorbent for the MB. The surface area of the SiO2/PANI-SDS is 23.317 m2/g, the pore size is 0.036 cm3/g, and the pore radius is 1.91 nm. Batch kinetic studies at different initial adsorbate, adsorbent and NaCl concentrations, and temperatures showed excellent pseudo-second-order. Several isotherm models were applied to evaluate the MB adsorption on the SiO2/PANI-SDS nanocomposite. According to R2 values the isotherm models were fitted in the following order: Langmuir > Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) > Freundlich. The adsorption/desorption process showed good reusability of the SiO2/PANI-SDS nanocomposite.

Recent advances in polyaniline-based micro-supercapacitors

The rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoTs) and proliferation of wearable electronics have significantly stimulated the pursuit of distributed power supply systems that are small and light. Accordingly, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have recently attracted tremendous research interest due to their high power density, good energy density, long cycling life, and rapid charge/discharge rate delivered in a limited volume and area. As an emerging class of electrochemical energy storage devices, MSCs using polyaniline (PANI) electrodes are envisaged to bridge the gap between carbonaceous MSCs and micro-batteries, leading to a high power density together with improved energy density. However, despite the intensive development of PANI-based MSCs in the past few decades, a comprehensive review focusing on the chemical properties and synthesis of PANI, working mechanisms, design principles, and electrochemical performances of MSCs is lacking. Thus, herein, we summarize the recent advances in PANI-based MSCs using a wide range of electrode materials. Firstly, the fundamentals of MSCs are outlined including their working principle, device design, fabrication technology, and performance metrics. Then, the working principle and synthesis methods of PANI are discussed. Afterward, MSCs based on various PANI materials including pure PANI, PANI hydrogel, and PANI composites are discussed in detail. Lastly, concluding remarks and perspectives on their future development are presented. This review can present new ideas and give rise to new opportunities for the design of high-performance miniaturized PANI-based MSCs that underpin the sustainable prosperity of the approaching IoTs era.

Polyaniline/Nanomaterial Composites for the Removal of Heavy Metals by Adsorption: A Review

Heavy metals represent one of the most important kinds of pollutants, causing serious threats to the ecological balance. Thus, their removal from aqueous solution is a major environmental concern worldwide. The process of adsorption—being very simple, economical, and effective—is widely applied for the decontamination of wastewaters from heavy metals. In this process, the adsorbent is the key factor affecting the performance; for this reason, significant efforts have been made to develop highly efficient and selective adsorbents with outstanding properties. This paper presents a detailed overview of the research on different methods of synthesis of nanocomposite materials based on the polymer polyaniline combined with nanomaterials, along with the influence of the synthesis method on their size, morphology, and properties. In addition, the study evaluates the adsorption efficiency of various developed nanocomposites for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution. From an economical and environmental point of view, the regeneration studies of the nanocomposites are also reported.

Toxic heavy metals: impact on the environment and human health, and treatment with conducting organic polymers, a review

Water pollution by heavy metals has many human origins, such as the burning of fossil fuels, exhaust gases of vehicles, mining, agriculture, and incineration of solid and liquid wastes. Heavy metals also occur naturally, due to volcanoes, thermal springs activity, erosion, infiltration, etc. This water contamination is a threat for living beings because most heavy metals are toxic to humans and to aquatic life. Hence, it is important to find effective techniques for removing these contaminants in order to reduce the level of pollution of the natural waters. In this work, we have reviewed the toxicity of several heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel), their impact on the environment and human health, and the synthesis and characterization methods of conducting organic polymers (COPs) utilized for the removal of heavy metals from the environment. Therefore, this review was essentially aimed to present recent works and methods (2000-2020) on the environmental impact and toxicity of heavy metals and on the removal of toxic heavy metals, using chemically and/or electrochemically synthesized COPs. We have also stressed the great interest of COPs for the removal of toxic heavy metals from waters.

Potentiometric performance of flexible pH sensor based on polyaniline nanofiber arrays

We report potentiometric performance of a polyaniline nanofiber array-based pH sensor fabricated by combining a dilute chemical polymerization and low-cost and simple screen printing process. The pH sensor had a two-electrode configuration consisting of polyaniline nanofiber array sensing electrode and Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Measurement of electromotive force between sensing and reference electrodes provided various electrochemical properties of pH sensors. The pH sensor show excellent sensor performances of sensitivity of 62.4 mV/pH, repeatability of 97.9% retention, response time of 12.8 s, and durability of 3.0 mV/h. The pH sensor could also measure pH changes as the milk is spoiled, which is similar to those of a commercial pH meter. The pH sensors were highly flexible, and thus can measure the fruit decay on the curved surface of an apple. This flexible and miniature pH sensor opens new opportunities for monitoring of water, product process, human health, and chemical (or bio) reactions even using small volumes of samples.
