Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to develop a new protective coating formulation for industrial use, using benzodiazepine derivatives as double function additives.
Design/methodology/approach
Benzodiazepine’s derivatives of types (3–5) were prepared and confirmed by infrared, Mass, 1H-Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 13C NMR spectra. The synthesized compound was physically incorporated in the alkyd paint formulation by pebble mill grinding until all particulates are smaller than 20 ums. The prepared coatings were applied by air spray on steel panels. The physical, mechanical characteristics, corrosion resistance and antimicrobial test of the prepared coatings were studied to evaluate the prepared compounds drawbacks.
Findings
The results of the mechanical and physical properties of the paint formulation revealed that the paint formulation incorporating benzodiazepines derivatives 3–5 performed best and improved corrosion-resistance and antibacterial activity tests.
Research limitations/implications
In alkyd paint, heterocyclic compounds are the most used antibacterial additives. Other functionalities of these compounds, such as corrosion inhibitors, might be studied to see if they are suited for these applications.
Practical implications
Because of the activity of various benzodiazepine derivatives, which may be attributable to the presence of some function groups such as sulfonamide aromatic amino NH2 group, and elements such as Sulphur, Nitrogen, Chlorine, in its chemical structure. As a result, paint compositions including these compounds as additives can be used as dual-purpose paint and for a variety of industrial applications.
Originality/value
The research demonstrates how a low-cost paint composition based on synthesized benzodiazepine derivatives 3–5 may be used as a dual-function paint for industrial use.

Abstract
Coumarin is a naturally occurring lactone-type benzopyrone with various applications in the pharmaceutical, food, perfume, and cosmetics industries. This hydrophobic compound is poorly soluble in water but dissolves well in protic organic solvents such as alcohols. Despite the extensive use of coumarin, there are only a few reports documenting its solubility in organic solvents, and some reported data are incongruent, which was the direct impulse for this study. To resolve this problem, a theoretical congruency test was formulated using COSMO-RS-DARE for the determination of intermolecular interaction parameters, which allowed for the identification of outliers as suspicious datasets. The perfect match between back-computed values of coumarin solubility and the experimental ones confirms the reliability of the formulated theoretical approach and its adequacy for testing solubility data consistency. As the final approval, the temperature-related coumarin solubility in seven neat alcohols was determined experimentally. Four solvents (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol) were used for reproducibility purposes, and an additional three (1-butanol, 1-pentanol, and 1-octanol) were used to extend the information on the homologous series. The consistency of this extended solubility dataset is discussed in terms of the comparison of remeasured solubility values with the ones already published and within the series of structurally similar solvents. The proposed procedure extends the range of applicability of COSMO-RS-DARE and provides a real and useful tool for consistency tests of already published solubility data, allowing for the approval/disapproval of existing data and filling gaps in datasets. Linear regressions utilizing a 2D molecular descriptor, SpMin2_Bhm, or the distance between solute and solvent in the Hansen solubility space, Ra, were formulated for the estimation of COMSO-RS-DARE integration parameters.

Abstract
Introduction. The present study is carried out for the first time on Chamaerops humilis L. var. argentea Andre from the region of Taza using an ethnopharmacological survey, an experimental study of the mineralogical and chemical compositions, and evaluations of the antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Methods. After conducting the ethnopharmacological survey, a mineralogical and phytochemical study involving the preparation of aqueous and organic extracts was done. Essential oils were also extracted by hydrodistillation. Subsequently, qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses were performed. In vitro evaluation of antioxidant activities was performed by five tests (H2O2, DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and RP) and antibacterial activities by the disc method and determination of MIC and MBC. A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to visualize the different correlations. Results. The different parts of the plant are used for the treatment of digestive disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. In addition, the leaves are rich in mineral compounds, catechic tannins, flavonoids, and sterols. However, they have some traces of essential oils. The quantitative analysis revealed that the ethanolic macerated had a higher content of total polyphenols (
EAG/g E) and catechic tannins (
EC/g E). This extract had a strong antioxidant capacity (H2O2 (
), DPPH (
), ABTS (
E AA/g E), FRAP (
E T/g E), and RP (
E AA/g E). The same extract had a bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that antioxidant activity was highly correlated with the chemical composition of C. humilis leaves; a high correlation was recorded between the total polyphenol content and ABTS (
), FRAP (
), DPPH (
), and PR (
) tests. In addition, cathectic tannins were highly correlated with the tests of DPPH (
) and ABTS (
). Flavonoids were similarly correlated with DPPH (
) and ABTS (
) tests. Conclusion. These results could justify the traditional use of the leaves of Chamaerops humilis in the region of Taza for the treatment of some diseases.

Abstract
AbstractGerms are transmitted in different ways and remain viable or infectious on metal, glass, wood, fabrics, and plastic surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Thus, sterilizing commonly handled everyday objects and public places with high contamination potential is a major global strategy to combat the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. Consequently, our response is development of durable surface‐active coating embedded with new Gd(I)/Cs(III) complexes that derived from condensation of thiocarbohydrazide and benzil precursors. Chemical structures of these complexes were elucidated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), electron impact ionization (EI‐MS), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), elemental analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Next, the well‐established complexes were physically mixed with wide‐range applicable polyurethane (PU) varnish as potential biocide agents. With laboratory scale, coating material was loaded into stainless steel and wood panels to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties. In comparison with the blank formulation, our additives enhanced the gloss levels of the developed PU from 75 to 80 gloss unit (GU), and the scratch hardness was increased to reach >2 kg. Meanwhile, all the coated films passed the flexibility bend test and showed none flaking in mechanical adhesion test. Consequently, Gd(I) and Cs(III) metal complexes did not show any undesirable side effects on PU coating performance. Concerning biological screening, macrocyclic Gd(I) and Cs(III) complexes as well as the reformulated PU varnish were assayed for their antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. Antibacterial activity of the developed PU was slightly increased than the individual treatments of Gd(I)/Cs(III) complexes by 1–2 mm, although the blank PU showed no obvious activity against all the tested bacterial strains. Antiviral overall results indicated that the Gd(I) and Cs(III) complexes demonstrated higher activity than the developed PU samples against ADeno‐7, CV‐B4, and HSV‐1 viruses in all modes of action, and hence these coordinated compounds could be promising virucidal agents with good biocompatibility.

Abstract
Coumarin is a naturally available molecule and has been identified as a potent pharmacophore due to its pharmacological activity. Because of this, coumarin has been exploited synthetically to prepare a wide range of derivatives. In fact, most coumarin derivatives have been found to be less toxic, which is the most essential property for a drug molecule. Such molecules are being prepared for therapeutic use as broad-spectrum pharmacological agents. Microbial diseases including viral diseases have become very common and are responsible for many deaths worldwide. In particular, microbial drug resistance is a problem that needs to be tackled in an effective manner. Also, for Alzheimer's disease, which affects most elderly persons, no efficient chemotherapy exists. In addition, although diabetes, a metabolic syndrome, can be treated with many drugs, there is no complete cure. Thus, more potent antidiabetic agents are required for the management of diabetes. Likewise, for the treatment of a wide range of ailments caused by microbes, genetic factors, or lifestyle-related factors, an efficient drug regimen is needed. In view of this, coumarin derivatives are designed and evaluated. Here, coumarin derivatives that have been reported recently are compiled, classified and evaluated critically. This study briefly takes the structure-activity relationship into consideration and suggests the next suitable step. With a focus on the most potent molecules, the pharmacological activity of the evaluated molecules is described.

Abstract
Natural and synthetic coumarin derivatives have gained increased attention in the design of functional polymers and polymer networks due to their unique optical, biological, and photochemical properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview over recent developments in macromolecular architecture and mainly covers examples from the literature published from 2004 to 2020. Along with a discussion on coumarin and its photochemical properties, we focus on polymers containing coumarin as a nonreactive moiety as well as polymer systems exploiting the dimerization and/or reversible nature of the [2πs + 2πs] cycloaddition reaction. Coumarin moieties undergo a reversible [2πs + 2πs] cycloaddition reaction upon irradiation with specific wavelengths in the UV region, which is applied to impart intrinsic healability, shape-memory, and reversible properties into polymers. In addition, coumarin chromophores are able to dimerize under the exposure to direct sunlight, which is a promising route for the synthesis and cross-linking of polymer systems under "green" and environment-friendly conditions. Along with the chemistry and design of coumarin functional polymers, we highlight various future application fields of coumarin containing polymers involving tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, soft robotics, or 4D printing applications.

Abstract
AbstractConsidering highly valuable biological and pharmaceutical properties of coumarins, the synthesis of these heterocycles has been considered for many organic and pharmaceutical chemists. This review includes the recent research in synthesis methods of coumarin systems, investigating their biological properties and describing the literature reports for the period of 2016 to the middle of 2020. In this review, we have classified the contents based on co-groups of coumarin ring. These reported methods are carried out in the classical and non-classical conditions particularly under green condition such as using green solvent, catalyst and other procedures.

Abstract
Polyurethanes are of undoubted interest for the scientific community and the industry. Their outstanding versatility from tailor-made structures turns them into major polymers for use in a wide range of different applications. As with other polymers, new, emerging molecules and monomers with specific attributes can provide new functions and capabilities to polyurethanes. Natural and synthetic coumarin and its derivatives are characterised by interesting biological, photophysical and photochemical properties. Then, the polyurethanes can exploit those features of many coumarins which are present in their composition to achieve new functions and performances. This article reviews the developments in the proper use of the special properties of coumarins in polyurethanes to produce functional and smart materials that can be suitable for new specific applications.
