Resilience in Nursing Faculty: An Integrative Review

The current documented nursing faculty shortage is an important factor affecting our ability to address the nationwide nursing shortage. Occupational burnout is a common phenomenon among nurses that may negatively impact retention of nursing faculty. While research suggests that promoting resilience moderates occupational burnout and relates to occupational satisfaction in practicing nurses, very few investigations have examined resilience among nursing faculty. The purpose of this integrative review is to describe the current state of the science on resilience in nursing faculty and includes an analysis of 14 studies. Three major foci were identified in the literature: 1) descriptions of resilience levels in nursing faculty, 2) examinations of resilience based upon demographic factors, and 3) resilience and related concepts. Existing research indicates there may be demographic differences in resilience levels of nursing faculty, but additional investigation is necessary to confirm these relationships. There is evidence that quality of life (QOL), components of QOL, and support are correlated with resilience in nursing faculty but more rigorous research on these relationships is needed. Understanding more about the relationship between resilience, demographics, and associated factors will guide future development and choice of interventions tailored to promote resilience among nursing faculty.

An Exploration of Resiliency Among Nurse Educators During the COVID-19 Pandemic

AIM

The purpose of this study was to explore resilience among nursing faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine associations or differences that may exist among variables and between groups.

BACKGROUND

Nurse educators' resilience has been identified as an important characteristic because of the challenges involved in nursing education. It is important to explore resilience among nurse educators to determine which factors promote or inhibit this important characteristic.

METHOD

This correlational research study used an online survey to explore factors related to resilience among nurse faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Correlational analyses were used to determine the relationship between various resilience constructs and select demographic variables.

RESULTS

Findings indicated that higher levels of resilience were associated with age (ρ = .21, p < .001), experience teaching online ( r = .22, p < .001), and professional development related to online teaching ( M = 80.7, SD = 11.0), t (276) = 2.41, p = .017.

CONCLUSION

Resilience and related characteristics have the potential to assist nurse educators in adapting successfully to stressful circumstances. It is crucial that schools of nursing develop programs to enhance or develop resilience among nurse educators. Support and training in the area of online education are also of paramount importance.

Nursing Faculty Resilience During a Time of Disruption and Change

ABSTRACT

Assessing the resilience level of nursing faculty during a time of unprecedented change in nursing education was the focus of this study. A descriptive cross-sectional survey that incorporated demographic data and the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was used. Participants (n = 78) had an average resilience score of 32.6. No correlation was found between resilience and demographic variables such as age, years of teaching experience, and type of nursing program. Resilience is important because it helps faculty assimilate various protective factors and persist during times of rapid change.

Promoting resilience in healthcare students through psychological interventions

Given the impact of well-known chronic stressors on health and social care students, the concept of resilience has gained importance in the field of health professional education. Many interventions have been tested that are aimed at fostering students’ resilience, but the underlying evidence has not been rigorously assessed. This was the aim of the review in this issue's Cochrane Corner. In this Round the Corner section, we discuss those findings and put them into further context.
