The COMFORT Model: Moving the Initiative Outside of the Academy

Reflexive and prospective in nature, the creators of the COMFORT model describe experiences of moving this research outside of the academy. The COMFORT model represents the seven basic principles of healthcare provider communication: C - Connect, O - Options, M - Making Meaning, F - Family Caregivers, O - Openings, R - Relating, T - Team. The COMFORT initiative began as a call for change in healthcare communication education. Originally published as a final chapter in a volume on family and palliative care communication, it was the start of an extensive translational program of trainings and tools addressing healthcare provider communication.

Nursing Students' and Nurse Preceptors' Perspectives of an Ambulatory Dedicated Education Unit in Primary Care and General Internal Medicine

BACKGROUND

The sustainability of prelicensure nursing clinical learning models within ambulatory care is dependent on strong partnership and the availability of ambulatory nurse preceptors. Evaluation of preceptor and student satisfaction with ambulatory clinical experiences is necessary to identify program strengths and opportunities.

METHOD

Nursing students' and nurse preceptors' perceptions of an ambulatory dedicated education unit (DEU) in primary care and general internal medicine practices were measured from 2021 to 2023.

RESULTS

Students' survey responses indicated a high level of agreement for 20 (90.9%) of 22 items in 2021, 35 (100%) of 35 items in 2022, and 32 (91.4%) of 35 items in 2023. Preceptor responses demonstrated favorable agreement with all of the work-life satisfaction across the 3 years of the survey, with the exception of one question on the 2021 survey.

CONCLUSION

Nursing students and staff nurse preceptors found the ambulatory DEU teaching and learning experience to be positive and satisfying. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(3):171-177.].

Nursing educational framework: A new nurse-driven, conceptually guided approach

PURPOSE

The aim of this article is to present the Nursing Educational Framework (NEF) as an opportunity to integrate core elements of a humanistic person/family-centered view and as guidance in structuring a relationship-based curriculum.

DATA SOURCES

Empirical and theoretical literature studies were reviewed to define the framework rationale and its components.

DATA SYNTHESIS

A deductive/inductive collaborative expert-informed approach was undertaken to develop this evidence-based codesigned framework. Its mission, along with unique components, implementation strategies, and outcomes, were successively integrated into the framework to guide nursing knowledge, learning, and curriculum development. A hermeneutic collaborative process of circular reflection was used in the development process.

CONCLUSIONS

The NEF contains central guiding principles and concepts that are intended to provide structural consistency across its included programs from a humanistic person/family-centered approach.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

This comprehensive theory-guided framework allows educators to suggest specific directions for nursing practice within the nursing discipline and articulate nursing's unique and specialized approach to promoting excellent patient care outcomes. It can assist students to develop critical lens from a person/family-centered relationship-based practice approach.
