Raman Characterization of Plastics: A DFT Study of Polystyrene

Plastic materials are ubiquitous and raise concerns about their impact on health and the environment. To address these concerns, it is crucial to characterize the structural, size, and textural properties of plastics throughout their lifecycle from production to degradation. Raman spectroscopy appears as a valuable tool for this purpose, offering speed, robustness, and sensitivity to nanoscale and amorphous particles. In order to be properly used for plastics, the Raman response of reference materials needs to be carefully assessed, with the literature on such assessments being scarce. This study addresses this gap by using theoretical calculations to generate ab initio spectra for polystyrene, a reference material. The aim is to explain the origins of the spectral peaks and their consistency across various compositions and structures using linear ordered polymeric and finite amorphous models. The CRYSTAL package is employed to obtain full Raman spectra based on a careful benchmark of computational settings. While some peaks are present across all spectra and can serve for calibration, others exhibit structure-dependent behavior, enabling polymer identification. We conclude that Raman spectroscopy is a well-suited technique for plastics characterization provided that a careful analysis of signal origin is conducted to fully interpret the spectra and deploy applications.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Aerogels with α, β, and γ Crystalline Forms: Correlating Physicochemical Properties with Polymorphic Structures

Strategic customization of crystalline forms of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) aerogels is of great importance for a variety of applications, from energy harvesters to thermal and acoustic insulation. Here, we report sustainable strategies to prepare crystalline pure α, β, and γ forms of PVDF aerogels from their respective gels using a solvent exchange strategy with green solvents, followed by a freeze-drying technique. The crucial aspect of this process was the meticulous choice of appropriate solvents to enable the formation of thermoreversible gels of PVDF by crystallization-induced gelation. Depending on the polymer-solvent interactions, the chain conformation of PVDF can be modulated to obtain gels and aerogels with specific crystalline structures. The crystalline pure α-form and piezoelectric β-form aerogels were readily obtained by using cyclohexanone and γ-butyrolactone as gelation solvents. On the other hand, the γ-form aerogel was obtained using a binary solvent system consisting of dimethylacetamide and water. These aerogels with distinct crystalline structures exhibit different morphologies, mechanical properties, hydrophobicities, acoustic properties, and electrical properties. Measurement of thermal conductivity for these aerogels showed exceptionally low thermal conductivity values of ∼0.040 ± 0.003 W m-1 K-1 irrespective of their crystal structures. Our results showcase the fabrication approaches that enable PVDF aerogels with varied physicochemical properties for multifunctional applications.

The Recent Advances of Polymer-POSS Nanocomposites With Low Dielectric Constant

This study provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation methods for polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomers and polymer/POSS nanocomposites. It focuses on the latest advancements in using POSS to design polymer nanocomposites with reduced dielectric constants. The study emphasizes exploring the potential of POSS, either alone or in combination with other materials, to decrease the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of various polymers, including polyimides, bismaleimide resins, poly(aryl ether)s, polybenzoxazines, benzocyclobutene resins, polyolefins, cyanate ester resins, and epoxy resins. In addition, the research investigates the impact of incorporating POSS on improving the thermal properties, mechanical properties, surface properties, and other aspects of these polymers. The entire study is divided into two parts, discussing systematically the role of POSS in reducing dielectric constants during the preparation of POSS composites using both physical blending and chemical synthesis methods. The goal of this research is to provide valuable strategies for designing a new generation of low dielectric constant materials suitable for large-scale integrated circuits in the semiconductor materials domain.

High-Efficiency Mono-Cyclopentadienyl Titanium and Rare-Earth Metal Catalysts for the Production of Syndiotactic Polystyrene

Syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) refers to a type of thermoplastic material with phenyl substituents that are alternately chirally attached on both sides of an aliphatic macromolecular main chain. Owing to its excellent physical and mechanical properties, as well as its chemical stability, high transparency, and electrical insulation characteristics, SPS is used in a wide variety of technical fields. SPS is commonly produced via the stereoselective transition metal-catalyzed coordination polymerization method mediated by stereospecific catalysts, which consists of anionic mono-cyclopentadienyl derivative η5-coordinated single active metal centers (referred to as "mono-Cp'-M"), with active center metals involving Group 4 transition metals (with an emphasis on titanium) and rare-earth (RE) metals of the periodic table. In this context, the use of mono-cyclopentadienyl titanocene (mono-Cp'Ti) catalysts and mono-cyclopentadienyl rare-earth metal (mono-Cp'RE) metallocene catalysts for the syndiospecific polymerization of styrene is discussed. The effects of the mono-cyclopentadienyl ligand structure, cationic active metal types, and cocatalysts on the activity and syndiospecificity of mono-Cp' metallocene catalysts are briefly surveyed.

Extended Q-range small-angle neutron scattering to understand the morphology of proton-exchange membranes: the case of the functionalized syndiotactic-polystyrene model system

Semi-crystalline polymers exhibit microphase separation into crystalline and amorphous domains characterized by multiple structural levels with sizes ranging from ångströms to hundreds of nanometres. The combination of small-angle (SANS) and wide-angle (WANS) neutron scattering on the same beamline enables reliable in situ characterization of such materials under application-relevant conditions, with the unique advantage of contrast variation by controlled labelling, allowing the structure of such multi-component systems to be resolved in detail. This paper reports a structural analysis performed on deuterated polymer membranes based on syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) using an extended Q-range SANS and WANS combination, always with the same neutron scattering instrument, either a pinhole SANS diffractometer installed at a research reactor or a 'small- and wide-angle' time-of-flight diffractometer installed at a neutron spallation source. sPS is a semi-crystalline material that becomes hydrophilic and proton conducting when suitable functionalization is achieved by thin film sulfonation, and can form various co-crystalline complexes (clathrates) with small organic molecules stored in the crystalline phase as guests in the vacancies between the polymer helices. Therefore, this material is interesting not only for its conducting properties but also for its versatility as a model system to evaluate the usefulness of extended Q-range neutron scattering in such studies. Variation of neutron contrast was achieved in the amorphous hydrophilic phase by using H2O or D2O to hydrate the membranes and in the crystalline phase by loading the clathrates with deuterated or protonated guest molecules. The experimental approach, the advantages and limitations of the two types of instrumentation used in such analyses, and the main results obtained with respect to the structural characterization of sulfonated sPS membranes under different hydration and temperature conditions are reported, and the potential of this method for similar structural studies on other semi-crystalline polymeric materials is discussed.

Segregation of Benzoic Acid in Polymer Crystalline Cavities

Benzoic acid (BA) and its derivatives are very attractive because of their pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, radical-regulating, antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal. Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films exhibiting co-crystalline phases with BA were prepared and characterized by WAXD, FTIR and polarized FTIR measurements. The FTIR measurements clearly showed that BA was present mainly as a dimer in the crystalline channels of the ε form of sPS as well as in the α form of PPO, as generally occurs not only in the solid state but also in organic dilute solutions. BA was instead present as isolated molecules in the crystalline cavities of the δ form of sPS. In fact, the FTIR spectra of BA guest molecules exhibited vibrational peaks close to those of BA in its vapor phase. Hence, the nanoporous-crystalline δ form of sPS not only avoids additive aggregation but also leads to the separation of dimeric molecules and the segregation of monomeric BA.

Review of Existing Standards, Guides, and Practices for Raman Spectroscopy

Over the past decades Raman spectroscopy has been extensively used both on an industrial and academic level. This has resulted in the development of numerous specialized Raman techniques and Raman active products, which in turn has led to the adoption and development of standards and norms pertaining to Raman unit's calibration, performance validation, and interoperability. Purpose of the present review is to list, classify, and engage in a comprehensive analysis of the different standards, guides, and practices relating to Raman spectroscopy. Primary aim of the review is to consider the commonalities and conflicts between these standards and norms and to identify any missing aspects. Standardization in the field of Raman spectroscopy is dominated by the work of American institutions, namely, the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM or ASTM International), with several active standards in place pertaining to terminology, calibration, multivariate analysis, and specific applications, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), providing numerous certified reference materials, referred to as standard reference materials. The industrial application of Raman spectroscopy is dominated by the pharmaceutical industry. As such, pharmacopoeias provide not only important information in relation to pharmaceutical-related applications of Raman spectroscopy, but also invaluable insight, into the basic principles of Raman spectroscopy and important aspects that include calibration, validation, measurement, and chemometric analysis processes, usually by referring to ASTM and NIST standards. Given the fact that Raman spectroscopy is a modern and innovative field, the standardization processes are complex and constantly evolving. Despite the seemingly high number of existing standards, the standardization landscape is incomplete and has not been modernized according to the developments in Raman spectroscopy techniques in recent years. This is evident by the lack of protocols for numerous areas as well as by the fact that some of the existing standards have not been updated to reflect the advances in the technique. Therefore, it is important for the Raman community to actively engage in and contribute to a modernization process that will result in updating existing and introducing new terms, protocols, and guides. Indeed, the development of optimized common standards would be extremely beneficial and would further foster the development and application of Raman spectroscopy techniques, most notably those of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and low-resolution portable analyzers.

Molecular Features Behind Formation of α or β Co-Crystalline and Nanoporous-Crystalline Phases of PPO

Guest molecular features determining the formation of α and β phases of poly(2-6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO) are explored by collecting literature data and adding many new film preparations, both by solution casting and by guest sorption in amorphous films. Independently of the considered preparation method, the α-form is favored by the hydrophobic and bulky guest molecules, while the hydrophilic and small guest molecules favor the β-form. Furthermore, molecular modeling studies indicate that the β-form inducer guests establish stronger dispersive interactions with the PPO units than the α-form inducer guests. Thus, the achievement of co-crystalline (and derived nanoporous crystalline) α- and β-forms would result from differences in energy gain due to the host–guest interactions established at the local scale.

Additional crystalline structures of syndiotactic polystyrene composites with acetylated cyclodextrin

Monomeric and Dimeric Carboxylic Acid in Crystalline Cavities and Channels of Delta and Epsilon Forms of Syndiotactic Polystyrene

Delta (δ) and epsilon (ε) co-crystalline forms of syndiotactic polystyrene with a carboxylic acid guest were obtained by sorption of liquid hexanoic acid in syndiotactic polystyrene films exhibiting delta and epsilon nanoporous-crystalline forms. The characterization study is facilitated by axially stretched syndiotactic polystyrene films, used both for polarized FTIR spectra and for WAXD fiber patterns. Particularly informative are two carbonyl-stretching FTIR peaks, attributed to monomeric and dimeric hexanoic acid. The dichroism of these carbonyl peaks indicates that both delta and epsilon phases are able to include hexanoic acid as isolated guest molecules, while only the epsilon phase is also able to include dimeric hexanoic acid molecules in its crystalline channels. The inclusion of both isolated and dimeric hexanoic acid species in the epsilon form crystalline channels produces extremely fast hexanoic acid uptakes by syndiotactic polystyrene epsilon form films.

Polarized X-ray scattering measures molecular orientation in polymer-grafted nanoparticles

Polymer chains are attached to nanoparticle surfaces for many purposes, including altering solubility, influencing aggregation, dispersion, and even tailoring immune responses in drug delivery. The most unique structural motif of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNs) is the high-density region in the corona where polymer chains are stretched under significant confinement, but orientation of these chains has never been measured because conventional nanoscale-resolved measurements lack sensitivity to polymer orientation in amorphous regions. Here, we directly measure local chain orientation in polystyrene grafted gold nanoparticles using polarized resonant soft X-ray scattering (P-RSoXS). Using a computational scattering pattern simulation approach, we measure the thickness of the anisotropic region of the corona and extent of chain orientation within it. These results demonstrate the power of P-RSoXS to discover and quantify orientational aspects of structure in amorphous soft materials and provide a framework for applying this emerging technique to more complex, chemically heterogeneous systems in the future.

Mechanical Property of Polypropylene Gels Associated with That of Molten Polypropylenes

This study aims to understand the fundamental mechanical relationship between polypropylene (PP)-gels and solid PPs without solvent through mechanical and thermal analyses, by which the mechanical similarities between molten PPs and PP gels were found, leading to the reliable estimate of the mechanical properties of semi-crystalline gels. The gelation of syndiotactic and isotactic polypropylenes (sPP and iPP) was found when PPs were dissolved in 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (tetralin). Interestingly, it was found that the storage modulus of sPP-gel became higher than that of iPP-gel at low PP concentration (<~40 wt%). The result was distinctly different from the result of neat solid PPs (without solvent), where the modulus of solid sPP is generally significantly lower than that of solid iPP. Such inversion behavior in the mechanical property of semi-crystalline gels had not been reported and discussed before. By further investigation of the storage moduli of neat sPP and iPP, it was found that the storage modulus of sPP became higher than that of iPP above the melting points of PP, which was similar to the behavior of the storage moduli observed in the diluted PP-gels. Such similarity between PP-gels and PP melts was also observed within iPP samples with different molecular weights.

Axial Orientation of Co-Crystalline Phases of Poly(2,6-Dimethyl-1,4-Phenylene)Oxide Films

Films exhibiting co-crystalline (CC) phases between a polymer host and low-molecular-mass guest molecules are relevant for many applications. As is usual for semi-crystalline polymers, axially oriented films can give relevant information on the crystalline structure, both by Wide Angle X-ray diffraction fiber patterns and by polarized Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Axially oriented CC phases of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) with 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (mesitylene) can be simply obtained by the stretching of CC PPO films. In fact, due to the plasticization effect of this highly boiling guest, PPO orientation can occur in a stretching temperature range (170-175 °C) nearly 50 °C lower than that generally needed for PPO films (220-230 °C). This low stretching temperature range allows avoidance of polymer oxidation, as well as formation of the mesomorphic dense γ PPO phase. Axially oriented CC phases of PPO with toluene, i.e., with a more volatile guest, can be instead obtained by the stretching (in the same low temperature range: 170-175 °C) of CC PPO blend films with polystyrene.

Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

SEBS-Grafted Itaconic Acid as Compatibilizer for Elastomer Nanocomposites Based on BaTiO3 Particles

Itaconic acid (IA) is an organic acid produced by the fermentation of sugars with aspergillus. It has been identified as one of the top 12 building-block chemicals. Here, we report the use of IA as a possible substitute to petroleum-based compatibilizers in polymer composite. We applied this study to thermoplastic elastomers based on styrene copolymers, since they are commonly used in blends and composites. Poly(styrene-b-ethylene-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) was grafted with 2.6 wt.% of itaconic acid (SEBS-g-IA) prepared by a reactive melt-mixing process, and was subsequently used to prepare composites filled with BaTiO₃.). IA was successfully grafted as demonstrated by FTIR and XRD. SEBS-g-IA composites presented better mechanical properties, achieving an increase of Young modulus up to 80% compared with the neat polymer. This was ascribed to better dispersion and compatibility with the filler. Additionally, SEBS-g-IA showed increased dielectric permittivity, i.e., showed increased polarity, which indicates that it could potentially be used as a modifier for specialized polymers.

Electrically Conductive Gels Prepared from Syndiotactic Polystyrene and an Ionic Liquid

Syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) physical gels containing a large amount of the ionic liquid 1-butylpyridinium bromide ([C₄py]Br) were systematically prepared and their physical properties were examined in detail. The gels had stable forms for a long time, having storage elastic modulus values of normal gels. They showed nearly the same values of the electrical conductivity (∼7 mS/cm) as those of the mixed solutions of [C₄py]Br, suggesting that the distribution of [C₄py]Br was uniform in these gels and that the charge transportation in these SPS gels was not interrupted by a three-dimensional network of SPS fibrils consisting of the SPS δ crystalline phases.

Synthesis and Characterization of Syndiotactic Polystyrene-Polyethylene Block Copolymer

The direct synthesis of syndiotactic polystyrene-block-polyethylene copolymer (sPS-b-PE) with a diblock structure has been achieved. The synthetic strategy consists of the sequential stereocontrolled polymerization of styrene and ethylene in the presence of a single catalytic system: cyclopentadienyltitanium(IV) trichloride activated by modified methylaluminoxane (CpTiCl₃/MMAO). The reaction conditions suitable for affording the partially living polymerization of these monomers were identified, and the resulting copolymer, purified from contaminant homopolymers, was fully characterized. Gel permeation chromatography coupled with two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy COSY, HSQC, and DOSY confirmed the block nature of the obtained polymer, whose thermal behaviour and thin film morphology were also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, powder wide angle x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy.

Aerobic Oxidation and Oxidative Esterification of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural by Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Nanoporous Polymer Host Matrix

The aerobic oxidation and oxidative esterification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) catalyzed by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported on a semicrystalline nanoporous multiblock copolymer matrix consisting of syndiotactic poly(styrene)-cis-1,4-poly(butadiene) (sPSB) have been investigated. Depending on the reaction parameters (support nanoporosity, presence of water, solvent, temperature, cocatalyst, oxygen pressure), the conversion of HMF can be finely addressed to the formation of the desired oxidation product, such as 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 5-formylfuran-2-carboxylic acid (FFCA), methyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)furan-2-carboxylate (MHMFC), dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate (DMFC), and furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), under optimized reaction conditions. The AuNP-sPSB catalyst is highly effective and selective because the polymer support acts as a conveyor and concentrator of the reactants toward the catalytic sites.

Crystallization of low molecular weight atactic polystyrene

We observe and characterize the crystallization of atactic polystyrenes (PS) of nearly oligomeric M_w using atomic force microscopy. We find that the low M_w polystyrene exhibits observable crystals on the surface. The crystals appear to be a few nm thick and nm to microns wide. These crystals grow at all temperatures less than ∼290 K. Melting of crystals was probed over an extended temperature range, and some fraction of the crystals start to melt at 302 K, but some fraction persist to higher temperatures and do not exhibit complete melting until 343 K. The tacticity of the molecules is tested with NMR spectroscopy and found to be atactic. We suggest that the crystals form due simply to the distribution of isomerism along the molecule which necessarily leaves some fraction of the molecules with uniform stereoregularity. This natural crystallinity may be related to previously observed and not definitively explained gel formation in atactic PS (a-PS), as well as cluster formation. The measurements are compared with the theory by Semenov (Macromolecules, 2009, 42, 6761) and together suggest that such crystallinity is possible over a wide range of polymerization index (N), and is limited only by the vanishingly small volume fractions and sluggish growth.

Progressive Relaxation Behavior and Relaxation Dynamics of sPS Gels upon Controlled Heating

Progressive relaxation behavior of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) chains in sPS gel was detected in the course of melting via the application of intrinsic fluorescence and fluorescence anisotropy techniques. The melting process included a dissociative process of the network at lower temperature and a relaxation process from helix to worm-like chains at higher temperature. The dynamics of structural relaxation behavior was discovered by intrinsic fluorescence technique, and an abrupt bend emerged at 58 °C on the Arrhenius plot. At temperatures lower than 58 °C, only the dissociation of the helical structure existed and the rate of relaxation from helix to worm-like conformation was negligible. At temperatures higher than 58 °C, the transition from helical chain to worm-like chain was the rate-determining step. The intrinsic fluorescence technique demonstrated its practicability in detecting kinetic processes of sPS/chloroform gel in the course of melting.

Nonsolvent-induced morphological changes and nanoporosity in poly(l-lactide) films

The role of a nonsolvent in controlling the crystallization and morphology of solvent-crystallized poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) films was investigated using various microscopy techniques and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). PLLA films crystallized in THF and acetone had 40-80 μm spherulites. When water was present in the solvent, a completely different morphology was observed with nanosized voids and the surfaces of the films were smooth. In contrast, SEM studies revealed that the films crystallized in acetone and THF which had macroporous structures, had larger voids and film surfaces were rough because of the presence of globular structures. Voids appeared within the spherulites in the THF/water treated film, whereas crystals nucleated at the surface of the nanosized voids in acetone/water treated PLLA films. The formation of such voids is attributed to the interface-enhanced crystal nucleation in a solvent/nonsolvent system where the nonsolvent increases the polymer crystal nucleation and the subsequent evaporation of the nonsolvent. The method described in this work can be extended to other polymers to control the morphologies of polymer films during solvent-induced crystallization.
