Abstract
Eating and sleeping behaviour are known to interact with each other, yet research is limited in the context of menopausal women. The aim of this study was to examine whether menopausal status is associated with perceived problems in sleeping. Furthermore, we studied different aspects of eating behaviour as potential risk factors for poor sleep in menopausal women. The present study is exploratory in nature, thus the results should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating. We analysed the sleeping and eating behaviour of 1098 women aged 47-55 years and represented different menopausal statuses with regression analyses. Over 20% of them reported fairly poor or poor perceived sleep quality. A higher number of postmenopausal women reported experiencing at least fairly poor sleep quality compared with the other menopausal groups. However, in regression models controlled for several confounding factors menopausal status was not associated with measures of sleep. Women who reported more snacking-type eating behaviour were more likely to report shorter sleep duration, and more daytime tiredness. Externally cued eating was associated with shorter sleep duration and emotional eating was associated with experiencing daytime tiredness. However, after adjusting for multiple testing, it appears that eating behaviour is associated only with daytime tiredness. Menopausal women with sleeping problems may benefit from nutritional interventions targeting eating behaviour.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep duration and prediabetes, as well as to evaluate the influence of inflammation in mediating this association. METHODS A total of 4632 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included in this study, comprising both baseline and 4-year follow-up data. The prospective relationship between sleep duration and the risk of prediabetes was examined using logistic regression models. We used multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the impact of prediabetes on sleep duration changes over follow-up, assessing the role of C-reactive protein in the association using mediation analysis. RESULTS Participants with short sleep duration (<5 hours) had a higher risk of prediabetes (odds ratios=1.381 [95% CI: 1.028-1.857]) compared to those with normal sleep durations (7-8 hours). However, excessive sleep durations (≥9 hours) did not show a statistically significant association with prediabetes risk. Moreover, individuals at least 60years old who experienced short sleep durations exhibited a higher risk of prediabetes. Individuals with prediabetes were more likely to have shorter sleep duration than excessive sleep duration (relative risk ratios=1.280 [95% CI: 1.059-1.547]). The mediation analysis revealed a mediating effect of C-reactive protein on the association between prediabetes and reduced sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration was identified as a risk factor for the incidence of prediabetes. Conversely, prediabetes was found to contribute to shorter sleep duration rather than excessive sleep duration. Moreover, elevated levels of C-reactive protein may serve as a potential underlying mechanism that links prediabetes with shorter sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between obesity and depressive symptoms is well documented, but not visceral fat, especially among Chinese adults are scarce. We aimed to investigate the association between visceral fat and depressive symptoms and the mediation of cognitive function. METHODS A total of 19,919 and 5555 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were enrolled in the cross-sectional and follow-up analyses. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Center of Epidemiological studies depression scale (CES-D). Visceral fat measured by the waist circumference triglyceride (WT) index [calculated as waist circumference (cm)* triglyceride (mmol/L)]. The relationship between the WT index and depressive symptoms was analyzed by binary logistics and Poisson regression. The mediated role of cognitive ability was examined by intermediary analysis. RESULTS In the cross-sectional study, higher visceral fat was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms. But in the follow-up study, individuals in quintile 2 to quintile 4 of the WT index have a reduced risk of depressive symptoms after four years. Compared with the lower index, quintile 2 of the WT index protected from difficulty concentrating (RR [95%CI]: 0.90 [0.82,0.98], p = 0.023), feeling scared (RR [95%CI]: 0.86 [0.73,0.98], p = 0.030) and feeling that life could not go on (RR [95%CI]: 0.85 [0.74,0.98], p = 0.023). Moreover, cognitive ability explained 11.52 % of the association between visceral fat and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that moderate visceral fat was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese, partly mediated by cognitive function.

Abstract
Obesity and overweight are associated with an increasing risk of developing health conditions and chronic non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, musculoskeletal problems, respiratory problems, and mental health, and its prevalence is rising. Diet is one of three primary lifestyle interventions. Many bioactive components in tea especially oolong tea, including flavonoids, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and caffeine were reported to show related effects in reducing the risk of obesity. However, the effects of GABA oolong tea extracts (OTEs) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity are still unclear. Therefore, this study aims to explore whether the intervention of GABA OTEs can prevent HFD-induced obesity and decipher its underlying mechanisms using male C57BL/6 J mice. The result indicated that GABA OTEs reduced leptin expression in epididymal adipose tissue and showed a protective effect on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It promoted thermogenesis-related protein of uncoupling protein-1 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator (PGC-1α), boosted lipid metabolism, and promoted fatty acid oxidation. It also reduced lipogenesis-related protein levels of sterol regulatory element binding protein, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and fatty acid synthase and inhibited hepatic triglyceride (TG) levels. These data suggest that regular drinking of GABA oolong tea has the potential to reduce the risk of being overweight, preventing obesity development through thermogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis.

Abstract
Obesity and sarcopenia, i.e., decreased skeletal muscle mass and function, are global health challenges. Moreover, people with obesity and sedentary lifestyles often have sleep disorders. Despite the potential associations, metabolic disturbances linking obesity, sarcopenia, and sleep disorders with cancer are neither well-defined nor understood fully. Abnormal levels of adipokines and adipomyokines originating from both adipose tissue and skeletal muscles are observed in some patients with obesity, sarcopenia and sleep disorders, as well as in cancer patients. This warrants investigation with respect to carcinogenesis. Adipokines and adipomyokines may exert either pro-carcinogenic or anti-carcinogenic effects. These factors, acting independently or together, may significantly modulate the incidence and progression of cancer. This review indicates that one of the possible pathways influencing the development of cancer may be the mutual relationship between obesity and/or sarcopenia, sleep quantity and quality, and adipokines/adipomyokines excretion. Taking into account the high proportion of persons with obesity and sedentary lifestyles, as well as the associations of these conditions with sleep disturbances, more attention should be paid to the individual and combined effects on cancer pathophysiology.

Abstract
Amaç: Bu çalışmada üniversite öğrencilerinde vücut kompozisyonu ve antropometrik ölçümlerin uyku süresi ve uyku kalitesiyle ilişkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki çalışma bir fakültede öğrenim gören, araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden ve dahil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan Bandırma Onyedi Eylül Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesinin 310 öğrencisiyle yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın verileri Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu ve Pittsburg Uyku Kalitesi İndeksi’ni içeren anket formu kullanılarak yüz yüze görüşme yöntemiyle toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin vücut kompozisyonlarının belirlenmesinde Biyoelektrik İmpedans Analizi (BİA) ile yağsız vücut kütlesi, vücut yağ ve kas kütlesi incelenmiş, Beden Kütle İndeksi (BKİ), bel çevresi, Bel Kalça Oranı (BKO), Bel Boy Oranı (BBO) ve triseps, supskapular, biseps, suprailiak Deri Kıvrım Kalınlıkları (DKK) değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde sayı, yüzde, ortalama, standart sapma, Student’s t testi ve Pearson korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır.Bulgular: Öğrencilerin uyku süresi ortalama 7,10±1,66 saattir, %74,8’i kötü uyku kalitesine sahiptir. Her iki cinsiyette yağsız vücut kütlesi (kg) ve vücut kas kütlesi (kg) ile uyku kalitesi skoru arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı, negatif yönlü zayıf ilişki, erkek öğrencilerde ise suprailiak DKK ve biseps DKK ile uyku kalitesi arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı, pozitif yönlü zayıf ilişki saptanmıştır (p<0,05).Sonuç: Üniversite öğrencilerinin uyku süreleri önerilen düzeydedir, buna karşın öğrencilerin dörtte üçü kötü uyku kalitesine sahiptir. Kız ve erkek öğrencilerde yağsız vücut kütlesi (kg) ve vücut kas kütlesi (kg) azaldıkça uyku kalitesi kötüleşmekte, erkek öğrencilerde ise suprailiak DKK ve biseps DKK arttıkça uyku kalitesi kötüleşmektedir.

Abstract
CONTEXT Increasing evidence suggests that sleep is important for fat metabolism. However, the causal relationship between sleep duration and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) needs to be further clarified. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the linear and nonlinear causal association between sleep duration and VAT. METHODS This study used one-sample and two-sample Mendelian randomization MR). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with sleep duration at genome-wide significance were obtained from published genome-wide association studies. We also recalculated the correlation between each SNP and sleep duration in the UK Biobank. The associations of SNPs with predicted VAT (396 858 participants) were conducted in the UK Biobank. RESULTS A total of 396 858 eligible participants (54.10% females, 57 ± 8 years old) were included in the study. The participants slept 7.17 ± 1.04 hours and stored 1.25 ± 0.88 kg of VAT on average. Genetically predicted sleep duration was significantly associated with VAT. For each 1-hour increase in genetically predicted sleep duration, the reduction in predicted VAT mass was 0.11 kg (P = 8.18E-16) in total, 0.17 kg (P = 3.30E-11) in men and 0.07 kg (P = 1.94E-06) in women. Nonlinear MR analyses demonstrated nonlinearity (L-shaped associations) between genetically predicted sleep duration and VAT in all participants, men, and women. Complementary analyses provided confirmative evidence of the adverse effects of genetically predicted short sleep duration on the increased VAT. In contrast, no clear evidence on the causal effect of genetically predicted long sleep duration on VAT mass was found. CONCLUSION The causal association of sleep duration with VAT was L-type. Our findings support that short sleep duration is a risk factor for increasing VAT, thus reinforcing the probability that increasing sleep duration may decrease VAT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep quality is an important modulator of neuroendocrine function, as sleep problems are related to metabolic and endocrine alterations. OBJECTIVE The main objective was to determine the effects of an exercise training program on the sleep quality of severely obese patients with sleep problems. The secondary objective was to determine the relationship between fitness and anthropometric parameters with sleep quality scores. METHODS Thirty severely obese patients participated in 16 weeks of PA intervention (age: 39.30 ± 11.62 y, BMI: 42.75 ± 5.27 kg/m2). Subjective sleep quality, anthropometric parameters, and fitness (i.e., handgrip strength and cardiorespiratory fitness) were measured. RESULTS Two groups were defined as good sleepers (n = 15, 38.06 ± 12.26, men = 1) and bad sleepers (n = 15, 40.53 ± 11.23, men = 3). The good sleeper group reported improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness (61.33 ± 68.75 m vs. 635.33 ± 98.91 m, p = 0.003) and handgrip strength (29.63 ± 9.29 kg vs. 31.86 ± 7.17 kg, p = 0.049). The bad sleeper group improved their cardiorespiratory fitness (472.66 ± 99.7 m vs. 611.33 ± 148.75 m, p = 0.001). In terms of sleep quality dimensions, the bad sleeper group improved their subjective sleep quality (p < 0.001), sleep latency (p = 0.045), sleep duration (p = 0.031), and habitual sleep efficiency (p = 0.015). Comparing the changes in both groups (∆), there were differences in subjective sleep quality scores (∆ = 2.23 vs. ∆ = -3.90, p = 0.002), where 86.6% of the bad sleeper group improved sleep quality (p = 0.030). An increase in handgrip strength was correlated to improving sleep quality scores (r = -0.49, p = 0.050). CONCLUSIONS Severely obese bad sleepers improved their subjective sleep quality, the components of sleep, and cardiorespiratory fitness through an exercise training program. Improvement in subjective sleep quality was linked to an increase in handgrip strength.

Abstract
Purpose Despite poor sleep quality being recognised in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, reports from milder forms of Muscular Dystrophy (MD), and accompanied associations with quality of life (QoL), pain and fatigue, remain limited however. Methods Adult males (n = 15 Beckers MD (BMD), n = 12 Limb-Girdle MD (LGMD), n = 12 Fascioscapulohumeral (FSHD), n = 14 non-MD (CTRL)) completed assessments of body composition (Bio-electrical impedance), sleep (7-day 24-hour tri-axial accelerometer, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index, QoL (SF36-v2), pain (Visual analogue scale), fatigue (Modified Fatigue Index Scale) and functional assessments (Brookes and Vignos). Results FSHD and BMD reported worse sleep than CTRL on the PSQI. FSHD scored worse than CTRL on the Insomnia Severity Index (P<0.05). 25–63% and 50–81% of adults with MD reported poor sleep quality using the Insomnia Severity Index and PSQI, respectively. Accelerometery identified no difference in sleep quality between groups. Associations were identified between sleep measures (PSQI global and insomnia severity) with mental or physical QoL in LGMD, BMD and FSHD. Multiple regression identified associations between sleep impairment and fatigue severity (all MDs), body composition (BMD & LGMD), upper and lower limb function (LGMD, FSHD) and age (FSHD). Conclusions 25–81% of men with MD, depending on classification, experience sleep impairment, using self-report sleep measures. Whilst BMD and FSHD showed worse sleep outcomes than CTRL, no group difference was observed between LGMD and CTRL, however all groups showed associations with sleep impairment and higher levels of fatigue. These findings, and associations with measures of health and wellbeing, highlight an area for further research which could impact QoL in adults with MD.

Abstract
Background: The relationship between sleep duration and different regional fat is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration and different regional fat mass (FM) among a population of US adults. Methods: 9413 participants were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), from 2011 to 2018. The sleep duration was divided into short sleep (<7 h/day), normal sleep (7−9 h/day) and long sleep (>9 h/day). Different regional FM was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, including trunk FM, arms FM and legs FM. Fat mass index (FMI) was obtained by dividing FM (kg) by the square of body height (m2). Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between sleep duration and regional FMI. Results: The mean sleep duration was 7.1 ± 1.5 h/day. After adjusting for socio-demographic, lifestyle information, comorbid diseases and medications, short sleepers had higher trunk FMI (β = 0.134, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.051−0.216, p = 0.001), arms FMI (β = 0.038, 95% CI: 0.016−0.06, p < 0.001) and legs FMI (β = 0.101, 95% CI: 0.044−0.158, p < 0.001) compared to normal sleepers, whereas no significant difference was found in long sleepers. The similar results were also observed in men, while short sleepers only had higher arms FM in women (all p < 0.01). In addition, compared to normal sleepers, short sleepers had higher arms FMI and legs FMI in the obese group (all p < 0.05), while no relationship was observed in non-obese group. Conclusions: Short sleep duration, but not long sleep duration, was independently related to the increased different regional body fat in US adults, especially in men and those with obesity.

Abstract
The association between sedentary behaviour and sleep quality (SQ) remains unclear, partly due to the limited methodology for assessing sedentary time and the influence of obesity. This study aimed to examine the association between objectively measured sedentary time and poor SQ, as well as the association of visceral fat accumulation. This cross-sectional study used health check-up data obtained from 721 Japanese adults. Sedentary time and physical activity were measured using an accelerometer for ≥7 days, with ≥10 measurement hours per day. Poor SQ was determined by a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score of ≥ 6. Visceral fat was measured using the abdominal bioimpedance method. A logistic regression model was used to analyse the association between sedentary time and SQ. We found that higher sedentary time was associated with poorer SQ. This association remained significant after adjustment for several covariates, including visceral fat. Compared with the lowest tertile of sedentary time, the second and highest tertile had a significantly higher OR of poor SQ (Tertile 2: OR = 2.06 [95% CI 1.14,3,73]; Tertile 3: OR = 2.76 [95% CI 1.49, 5.11]). These results suggest that managing sedentary time itself might contribute to improving SQ.

Abstract
Background: Sleep is an important modulator of neuroendocrine function and glucose metabolism. Poor sleep quality is related to metabolic and endocrine alterations, including decreased glucose tolerance, decreased insulin sensitivity, and increased hunger and appetite. Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the association between sleep quality with metabolic syndrome (MetS) markers, fitness and body fat of women with severe/morbid obesity. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 26 women with severe/morbid obesity. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high-density lipids (HDL-c), triglycerides (TGs), and the metabolic outcomes total cholesterol (Tc) and low-density lipids (LDL-c), systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body composition and fitness were measured. Results: Poor sleep quality showed a positive association with body fat (%) ≥ 48.2 (OR; 8.39, 95% CI; 1.13–62.14, p = 0.037), morbid obesity (OR; 8.44, 95% CI; 1.15–66.0, p = 0.036), glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL (OR; 8.44, 95% CI; 1.15–66.0, p = 0.036) and relative handgrip strength ≤ 0.66 (OR; 12.2, 95% CI; 1.79–83.09, p = 0.011). Conclusion: sleep quality is associated with health markers in women with severe/morbid obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study examined correlations between physical activity and anthropometrics as well as sleep quality and anthropometrics. PARTICIPANTS College students (n = 85) with average age 25.6 ± 5.4 years. METHODS Participants received full-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans and completed validated surveys: Habitual Physical Activity questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS Males reported more sports-related physical activity than females (p = 0.041). Physical activity indices and percent body fat were inversely correlated (total ⍴ = -0.320, p < 0.001; sport β = -0.378, p = 0.003). Participants had poor overall sleep quality (PSQI = 6.19 ± 2.99). The PSQI sleep quality index: disturbance was directly correlated with body mass index (BMI) (β = 0.328, p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Health interventions on college campuses should promote more physical activity and better quality sleep as these factors were related to improved body anthropometrics and potentially reduced chronic disease risk.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Previous research suggests that reductions in restorative, slow-wave (N3), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep are associated with weight gain and obesity in mid-to-late life. We extend prior work by examining how within-person (WP) changes and between-person (BP) differences in restorative sleep over several years are associated with body mass trajectories among participants in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (WSCS). METHODS We used data from 4,862 polysomnographic (PSG) sleep studies and physical exams collected from 1,187 WSCS participants over an average duration of 14.9 years. Primary measures of interest included body mass index (BMI = kg/m2) and the percentages of time spent in N3 and REM sleep. We estimated a series of linear mixed regression models to examine how WP changes and BP differences in N3 and REM sleep affected BMI trajectories, controlling for other sleep measures, demographic characteristics, and health behaviors as potential confounders. RESULTS Women in the WSCS experienced more rapid BMI gain than men. With some variation by sex, we found that (1) below-average N3 and REM sleep is associated with above-average BMI, and (2) within-person decreases in N3 and REM sleep over time are associated with gains in BMI. These findings persisted after adjustment for sleep duration and other potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the importance of PSG indices of restorative sleep in mid-to-late life, suggesting that future clinical treatments and public health policies will benefit from heightened attention to sleep quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between obesity and hyperuricemia has been demonstrated by many studies. However, whether or to what extent metabolic condition influents the association between obesity and hyperuricemia was not clear. Here, we aimed to examine the association between obese-metabolic phenotype and hyperuricemia in a large sample of Chinese adults. METHODS According to BMI and metabolic syndrome, obese-metabolic phenotype was defined as metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), metabolically unhealthy non-obesity (MUNO) and metabolically healthy non-obesity (MHNO)in the Tianning cohort (N=5072). We conducted a cross-sectional analysis between obese-metabolic phenotype and hyperuricemia, followed by a Mendelian Randomization analysis using GWAS summary data to confirm the causality between uric acid and BMI. RESULTS The average level of serum UA showed 41.87-higher μmol/L in participants with MHO (β=41.87, P<0.001) and 63.18-higher μmol/L in participants with MUO (β=63.18, P<0.001), compared to those with MHNO. Compared to participants with MHNO, those with MUO had the highest likelihood to have hyperuricemia (OR=4.56, P<0.001), followed by those with MHO (OR=3.32, P<0.001). Mendelian randomization analysis indicated that uric acid was more likely to be a consequence of BMI (β=0.059, P=6.54×10-154). CONCLUSION MUO, in comparison with MHO, was significantly associated with hyperuricemia in Chinese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) refers to metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease, and liver fibrosis stage is closely connected with liver-related and all-cause mortality. This study aimed to explore the association of sleep duration with liver fibrosis in the diabetic subgroup of the MAFLD population. METHODS This retrospective study analyzed 342 patients with MAFLD. Anthropometric measurements, clinical and biochemical markers, and lifestyle parameters were collected. Fibrosis was defined as fibrosis-4 ⩾1.3. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to match cases. Student's t-test and chi-square tests were applied for group comparisons, and binary regression models were used to explore the independent risk factors of liver fibrosis. RESULTS Among the 342 subjects, 87 (25.4%) were diagnosed with fibrosis and 255 (74.6%) without. Baseline characteristic comparisons showed differences in age and diabetes duration between the two groups, and adjustment was made by PSM. Ultimately, the fibrosis group and nonfibrosis group each had 87 patients. The fibrosis group had shorter duration of nocturnal sleep (6.77 ± 1.59 h) than the nonfibrosis group (7.77 ± 1.92 h, p < 0.001). More patients in the fibrosis group stayed up late at night (32.2% versus 14.9%, p < 0.01). Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) areas were larger in the fibrosis group than in the nonfibrosis group (p < 0.001). Glycemic profile, lipid profile, gamma-glutamyl transferase level, and serum uric acid level were not significantly different between the two groups. In the multivariate regression analysis, nocturnal sleep and VAT areas were independently associated with liver fibrosis, with odds ratios of 0.694 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.551-0.875, p < 0.01] for nocturnal sleep and 1.031 (95% CI 1.014-1.048, p < 0.001) for VAT areas. CONCLUSION Insufficient nocturnal sleep was independently related to a higher risk of fibrosis. Sleep modification might be beneficial in promoting the health of patients with MAFLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of sleep problems with weight and waist size gain during four years of follow-up. METHODS We investigated 13,030 participants (35-74 years) of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), a multicentric cohort conducted with civil servants from six academic institutions recruited between 2008 and 2010. Sleep problems were assessed at baseline by the Clinical Interview Schedule - Revised (CIS-R), designed to detect common mental disorders based on somatic, depressive and anxiety symptoms. Weight and waist size were measured at baseline and at follow-up (2012-2014). Large weight and waist size gain were defined as ≥ 90th percentile (≥1.65 kg/year and ≥2.41 cm/year, respectively). RESULTS Sleep problems were associated with higher risk of a large weight gain (RR = 1.11; 95% CI 1.01-1.24) and large waist size gain (RR = 1.19; 95% CI 1.07-1.32), adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, income, educational level, investigation center, smoking, alcohol intake, dietary energy intake, leisure-time physical activity and body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference at baseline. After additional adjustment for common mental disorders the associations became non-significant (RR = 0.99; 95% CI 0.88-1.12; RR = 1.08; 95% CI 0.97-1.22, respectively). CONCLUSION Sleep problems are associated with increased risk of developing large weight and waist size gain, but are not independently associated with common mental disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A cross-sectional study was designed to investigate the association between sleep quality and glucose metabolism among people with prediabetes, and to explore the potential pathways linking poor sleep to glucose intolerance. METHODS One hundred fifty-five females and males, Caucasians and African Americans, aged 19-70 completed the study for data analysis. All participants were assessed for sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Fasting glucose and 2-h glucose levels were collected via a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and used to define prediabetes. Participants provided blood samples for measuring inflammatory markers. Associations were conducted using Pearson's correlation with adjustments for gender, age, and body mass index (BMI). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was applied to compare the two groups, prediabetes group versus the control group, after controlling for gender, age, and BMI. Regression was used to investigate predictive power of sleep subscales for inflammatory factors and glucose levels. RESULTS More people with prediabetes suffered from poor sleep than in the normal glucose group (62% vs. 46%). The OGTT measures, i.e. fasting glucose and 2-h glucose levels, correlated with PSQI measures, but these associations did not maintain statistical significance after adjusting for gender, age, and BMI. The C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were greater in the prediabetes group than the normal glucose group (0.37 ± 0.07 vs. 0.18 ± 0.06 mg/L). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between sleep disturbance and CRP levels (r = 0.30, p = 0.04). Regression analysis found that sleep disturbance predicted CRP levels and significance remained after adding covariates (β = 0.20, p = 0.04). No significant difference was observed in other measured inflammatory factors, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), between the two groups. CONCLUSION Prediabetes is positively associated with poor sleep. Increased CRP levels may be a potential underlying mechanism of this association between prediabetes and poor sleep which warrants further study. Our findings highlight the importance for clinicians to evaluate sleep quality as part of preventing the onset of future diabetes in this particular population.

Abstract
Epidemiological evidence on the association between macronutrient intake and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is scarce. Using data from the North West Adelaide Health Study, we aimed to determine the association between iso-caloric substitution of macronutrients and EDS. Data from 1997 adults aged ≥ 24 years were analyzed. Daytime sleepiness was measured using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a score ≥ 11 was considered EDS. Dietary intake data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. We determined absolute and relative energy intake based on consumption of saturated and unsaturated fats, protein, and carbohydrate. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to determine the associations using log-binomial logistic regression with and without iso-caloric substitution methods, and models were adjusted for confounders. The prevalence of EDS in the sample was 10.6%. After adjusting for potential confounders, substituting 5% energy intake from protein with an equal amount of saturated fat (OR = 1.57; 95% CI: 1.00–2.45) and carbohydrate (OR = 1.23; 95% CI: 0.92–1.65) increased the odds of EDS. When carbohydrate was substituted with saturated fat (OR = 1.27; 95% CI: 0.93–1.59), the odds of EDS were increased. The odds of EDS were lower when saturated fat was substituted with unsaturated fat (OR = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.51–1.06), protein (OR = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.41–0.99) or carbohydrate (OR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.57–1.08). While these results were consistent over different iso-caloric substitution methods, inconsistent results were found with standard regression. While substitution of fat and carbohydrate with protein was inversely associated with EDS, substitution of protein with fat and carbohydrate was positively associated with EDS. Randomized trials are needed to confirm if dietary interventions can be used to improve daytime alertness in those with EDS.
