A Dynamic Principal Component Analysis and Fréchet-Distance-Based Algorithm for Fault Detection and Isolation in Industrial Processes

Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) methodology focuses on maintaining safe and reliable operating conditions within industrial practices which is of crucial importance for the profitability of technologies. In this work, the development of an FDI algorithm based on the use of dynamic principal component analysis (DPCA) and the Fréchet distance δdF metric is explored. The three-tank benchmark problem is studied and utilized to demonstrate the performance of the FDI method for six fault types. A DPCA transformation for the system was established, and fault detection was conducted based on the Q statistic. Fault isolation is also of critical importance for proper intervention to mitigate fault effects. To identify the type of detected faults, the fault responses within the PC subspace were analyzed using the δdF metric. The use of the Fréchet distance metric for the isolation of faults combined with DPCA for feature extraction is a novel technique to the best of the authors’ knowledge that provides a robust computational tool with low computational cost for FDI purposes that fits well into the Industry 4.0 framework.The robustness and sensitivity of the method was validated for a wide variety of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions, with findings indicating a possible average false and missed alarm rate of 0.1 and a macro-averaged F-score above 0.8 in all cases.

A New Method for Environmental Risk Assessment of Pollutants Based on Multi-Dimensional Risk Factors

Pollutant discharge causing the deterioration of the watershed environment has seriously threatened human health and ecosystem function. The importance of improving the risk warning system is becoming more and more prominent. Traditional chemical risk assessment methods focused on toxicity and the exposure of pollutants without considering the impact of persistent pollutants in different environmental media. In this study, a new approach was proposed to reflect multi-dimensional evaluation with a synthetic risk factor (SRF) of pollutants. The integrating parameters of SRF include toxicity endpoint values, environmental exposure level, persistent properties, and compartment features. Selected pesticides, perfluorinated compounds, organophosphate esters and endocrine disruptors were analyzed by the proposed and traditional methods. The results showed a higher risk outcome using SRF analysis for PFOS, imazalil, testosterone, androstenedione and bisphenol A, which were different from those obtained by the traditional method, which were consistent with existing risk management. The study demonstrated that the SRF method improved the risk assessment of various pollutants in different environmental media in a more robust fashion, and also provided a more accurate decision basis for ecological environment protection.

The Fallout of Catastrophic Technogenic Emissions of Toxic Gases Can Negatively Affect Covid-19 Clinical Course

The coronavirus D-19 (Covid-19) pandemic has shaken almost every country in the world: as we stand, 6,3 million deaths from the infection have already been recorded, 167,000 and 380,000 of which are in Italy and the Russian Federation, respectively. In the first wave of the pandemic, Italy suffered an abnormally high death toll. A detailed analysis of available epidemiological data suggests that that rate was shockingly high in the Northern regions and in Lombardy, in particular, whilst in the southern region the situation was less dire. This inexplicably high mortality rate in conditions of a very well-developed health care system such as the one in Lombardy - recognized as one of the best in Italy - certainly cries for a convincing explanation. In 1976, the small city of Seveso, Lombardy, experienced a release of dioxin into the atmosphere after a massive technogenic accident. The immediate effects of the industrial disaster did not become apparent until a surge in the number of tumors in the affected population in the subsequent years. In this paper, we endeavor to prove our hypothesis that the release of dioxin was a negative cofactor that contributed to a worsening of the clinical course of COVID-19 in Lombardy.

Establishing the National Institute for Research in Environmental Health, India

Problem

Multiple environmental health issues resulting from pollution and climate change threaten public health in India.

Approach

The Government of India recognized the need for a permanent environmental health research institute; the Indian Council of Medical Research therefore established the National Institute for Research in Environmental Health in Bhopal in 2010. Scientists at the institute assessed the multiple long-term health effects of exposure to methyl isocyanate, and are now conducting research on a wide array of locally relevant environmental health issues.

Local setting

The Union Carbide India Limited pesticide factory in Bhopal was the site of a methyl isocyanate gas leak in 1984, which affected half a million people. The Indian Council of Medical Research set up a coordinating unit in the immediate aftermath, which was upgraded to the Bhopal Gas Disaster Research Centre in 1986 and then the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies in 1995.

Relevant changes

Scientists at the institute undertake environmental monitoring and health risk assessment studies among communities located near polluted areas, such as industrial areas. They are also assessing the training needs of practising physicians, with the aim of developing a curated curriculum to meet the deficiencies in environmental health education in the country.

Lessons learnt

Environmental legislation was introduced in the wake of the disaster and a research institute in environmental health was established. Researchers at the institute have recognized the importance of engaging communities in environmental health research, as well as knowledge dissemination to relevant stakeholders.

Respiratory morbidities and lung function abnormalities in survivors of Bhopal Gas Disaster: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Respiratory morbidities remained significant for the last four decades among the survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster. We hypothesized that lung function abnormalities, especially small airway dysfunctions, were responsible for the ongoing respiratory morbidities.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional study between 2018 and 2020 in the severely exposed cohort of the Bhopal gas disaster. A standardized questionnaire was used to record their respiratory symptoms. The forced oscillometry (FOT) and spirometry were utilized for assessing lung functions. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association.

RESULTS

Of 916 enrolled individuals (men: 442, mean age: 55.2 ± 12.3 years), 558 participated in lung function assessments. Breathlessness was the most common complaint (71.7%), followed by cough (15.1%). The R5 > upper limit of normal (ULN), R_5-19 > ULN, and X5 < lower limit of normal (LLN) were observed in 29.3%, 23.3%, and 21.2% participants, respectively. Normal, obstructive, and restrictive spirometry was observed in 46.2%, 26.1%, and 27.7%, participants, respectively. FOT parameters were abnormal in 25.3% individuals with normal spirometry. Individuals with obstructive spirometry had the highest risk of having abnormal FOT parameters (adjusted odds ratio [adj OR]:3.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.24-6.89). Breathlessness showed a significant association with abnormal R5 (adj OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.13-2.91) and obstructive spirometry (adj OR: 2.26; 95% CI: 1.29-3.95).

CONCLUSIONS

Assessment of small airway functions along with spirometry are useful to identify complex lung function abnormalities in cases of toxic inhalation.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Chemical-Mass Casualty Incident Response Education Module (C-MCIREM): A Pilot Simulation Study With a Before and After Design

Background

With the occurrence of a number of major disasters around the world, there is growing interest in chemical disaster medicine. In South Korea, there is a training program for mass casualty incidents (MCI) and backup by legal regulations by the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety. However, there is no program focusing on chemical disasters. Thus, the authors newly created a program, the Chemical-Mass Casualty Incident Response Education Module (C-MCIREM) in September 2019. This was a pilot study to verify the educational effect of the program.

Method

A pre/post study was conducted of a chemical MCI training program based on simulation. A total of 25 representative and qualified participants were recruited from fire departments, administrative staff of public health centers, and healthcare workers of hospitals in the Gyeonggi-do province of South Korea. They participated in a one-day training program. A knowledge test and confidence survey were provided to participants just before training, and again immediately following the training online. The authors compared improvements of pre/post-test results. In the tabletop drill exercise, quantified qualitative analyses were used to measure the educational effect on the participants.

Results

In the knowledge test, the mean (standard deviation) scores for all 25 participants at baseline and after training were 41.72 (15.186) and 77.96 (11.227), respectively (p < 0.001). In the confidence survey for chemical MCI response for all 25 participants, all the sub-items concerning personal protective equipment selection, antidote selection, antidote stockpiling and passing on knowledge to colleagues, zone setup and decontamination, and chemical triage were improved compared to the baseline score (p < 0.001). The tabletop exercise represented a prehospital setting and had 11 participants. The self-efficacy qualitative survey showed pre- and post-exercise scores of 64/100 and 84/100 respectively. For a hospital setting exercise, it had 14 participants. The survey showed pre/post-exercise scores of 26/100 and 73/100 respectively. Twenty-two (88%) participants responded to the final satisfaction survey, and their overall mean scores regarding willingness to recommend this training program to others, overall satisfaction with theoretical education, overall satisfaction with tabletop drill simulation, and opinion about whether policymakers need this training were all over 8 out of 10 respectively.

Conclusion

C-MCIREM, the newly created chemical MCI program, provided effective education to the selected 25 participants among Korean chemical MCI responders in terms of both knowledge and practice at a single pilot trial. Participants were highly satisfied with the educational material and their confidence in disaster preparedness was clearly improved. In order to prove the universal educational effect of this C-MCIREM in the future, more education is needed.
