Abstract
β-glucosidase (BglA) immobilization from Thermotoga maritima on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with chitosan (Cs) were efficiently investigated to improve lactose conversion and galactooligosaccharides (GOS) production. We used a batch method in order to improve the conversion of lactose to GOS. The efficiency and yield of immobilization were 79% and immobilized BglA was effectively recycled via a magnetic separation procedure through a batch-wise GOS with no activity lessening. Furthermore, analyses were done through screening kinetics of enzyme activity, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Proposed methodology of immobilization shows a potential application as it is stable which was proved through many methods including pH, temperature, heat treatment, storage, and kinetics of the enzyme. GOS and residual enzyme activity showed to be 28.76 and 40.44%, respectively. However, free enzyme synthesis of GOS yield was just 24% after 12 hr. This study proposed applying magnet in the immobilization process of BglA on Cs-MNPs to produce GOS as new method for immobilizing enzyme in a biostable and cost-efficient way. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This paper focus on immobilization of BglA from T. maritima onto MNPs functionalized with CS to investigate their further possibility improving lactose conversion and GOS production. Interestingly, a successful immobilization of Tm-BglA on the substrates were achieved in Cs-MNPs. The obtained results from enzyme activity, SDS-PAGE, FT-IR, and TEM showed that the high binding capacity of BglA to Cs-MNPs was successfully obtained. Furthermore, the binding efficiency calculation indicated that the immobilized BglA-Cs-MNPs conserved 40.44% of its native activity at the end of its 6th repeated use. In addition, magnetic separation technique was successfully employed for reuse of the immobilized BglA for repetitive batch-wise GOS without significant loss of activity.

Abstract
Magnetic copolymer based on poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) microspheres was prepared by 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone- (DMPP-) photo initiated and poly(vinyl alcohol)- (PVA-) stabilized single step suspension photopolymerization. The effect of chemical interaction, morphology, and thermal properties by adding 0.1% w/v Fe3O4in the copolymer was investigated. Infrared analysis (FTIR) showed that (C=C) band disappeared after copolymerization, indicating that the magnetic copolymer microspheres were successfully synthesized and two important bands at 908 cm−1and 1550 cm−1appear. These are associated with the epoxy group stretching of GMA and secondary amide (N–H/C–H) deformation vibration of NIPAAm in magnetic microspheres. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) result proved the incorporation of Fe3O4nanoparticles with copolymer microspheres as peak of Fe3O4was observed. Morphology study revealed that magnetic copolymer exhibited uniform spheres and smoother appearance when entrapped with Fe3O4nanoparticles. The lowest percentage of Fe3O4nanoparticles leached from the copolymer microspheres was obtained at pH 7. Finally, thermal property of the copolymer microspheres was improved by adding a small amount of Fe3O4nanoparticles that has been shown from the thermogram.

Abstract
Hybrid inorganic colloidal particles have attracted a great attention in the last years, and they have been largely used in various applications and more particularly in biomedical nanotechnology. Recently, they are used as carriers for biomolecules, and exploited for use in microsystems, microfluidics and in lab-on-a chip based bionanotechnology. Various kinds of hybrid particles can be listed starting from classical inorganic nanoparticles such as silica, gold, silver, iron oxide and those exhibiting intrinsic properties such as semiconducting nanoparticles (e.g. quantum dots). As a general tendency, to be conveniently used in biomedical applications, the encapsulation of the inorganic nanoparticles in a polymer matrix is incontestably needed. Consequently, various chemistry-based encapsulation processes have been developed and showed promising results as compared to the encapsulation using preformed polymers.

Abstract
Magnetic poly(styrene-glycidyl methacrylate) porous microspheres (MPPM) with high magnetic contents were prepared by surfactant reverse micelles and emulsion polymerization of monomers, in which the well-dispersed Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles were modified by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and oleic acid (OA) respectively. The characterizations showed that both of the OA-MPPM and the PEG-MPPM were ferromagnetic, however, the OA-MPPM was used to immobilize the bacteria for more advantages. Therefore, the effects of monomer ratio, surfactant, crosslinker and amount of Fe(3)O(4) on the structure, morphology and magnetic contents of the OA-MPPM were investigated. Then, the OA-MPPM was utilized to immobilize Klebsiella sp. FD-3, an iron-reducing bacterium for Fe(III)EDTA reduction applied in NO(x) removal. Compared with free bacteria, the immobilized FD-3 showed a better tolerance to the unbeneficial pH and temperature conditions.

Abstract
A novel and fast method for the determination of the binding kinetic data of ligand to protein has been developed. A new tool including human serum albumin-coated magnetic beads (HSA-MB) was used to determine the affinity of camptothecin (CPT) and its analogues to HSA. From the biological activity point of view, these compounds have potential anticancer activity. However, the numerous studies indicate that some of these analogues have a strong affinity to plasma proteins stopping their effective therapy. Thus, the problem of plasma protein binding behavior of CPT's analogues was the subject of this study.

Abstract
A simple and fast method for the determination of the association constant (K(a)) of ligand to human serum albumin (HSA) has been developed by using human serum albumin-coated magnetic beads (HSA-MB). To date, magnetic beads (MB) have been increasingly used as a bioseparation tool, especially for DNA, RNA, protein, enzyme and cell isolation or purification. In this study, HSA-MB were used as a new tool to determine the affinity of known ligands to HSA. The K(a) for l-tryptofan, fenoprofen, ketoprofen, tolbutamide and warfarin obtained from Schathard analysis are consistent with previously reported values. The different K(a) values for ketoprofen after the acetylation of HSA-MB by preincubation with acetylosalicylic acid indicate that these beads can be successfully adapted in combined experiment. In addition, the HSA-MB experiment with phenytoin and valproic acid proved to be a simple method to examine drug displacement effect.

Abstract
A new approach to the surface functionalization of magnetic polystyrene microbeads with chloroacetyl chloride in the presence of aluminum chloride was reported. Composite microbeads consisting of polymer-coated iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by spraying suspension polymerization. Functional chloride groups were introduced onto the surface of magnetic polystyrene microbeads by surface chemical reaction without destroying the magnetite nanoparticles within the microbeads. First, a complex was synthesized by a reaction between aluminum chloride and chloroacetyl chloride. Then, the complex was added dropwise to the solution of magnetic polystyrene microbeads, and a surface acylation reaction between complex and polystyrene microbeads was carried out. Subsequently, the amino groups were coupled to the magnetic microbeads via an ammonolysis reaction between ethylenediamine and chloride groups on the acylated magnetic polystyrene microbeads. The chemical composition, surface functional groups, and magnetism of the magnetic polystyrene microbeads before and after surface functionalization were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results showed that the surface functionalization reaction had little impact on the magnetism of the microbeads. The content of surface amino groups on the magnetic polystyrene microbeads was found to be 0.2 mmol/g. An affinity dye, Cibacron Blue F3G-A (CB), was then immobilized to prepare a magnetic affinity adsorbent. It was confirmed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra that the CB molecules were covalently coupled on the magnetic microbeads.
