Abstract
Abstract
Methacrylic acid based microgels have got much consideration in the last two decades because of their potential uses in different fields owing to their responsive behaviour towards external stimuli. Synthesis, properties and uses of methacrylic acid based microgels and their hybrids have been critically reviewed in this article. With minute change in external stimuli such as pH and ionic strength of medium, these microgels show quick swelling/deswelling reversibly. The methacrylic acid based microgels have been widely reported for applications in the area of nanotechnology, drug delivery, sensing and catalysis due to their responsive behaviour. A critical review of current research development in this field along with upcoming perception is presented here. This discussion is concluded with proposed probable future studies for additional growth in this field of research.

Abstract
Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. The maximum MPP adsorption capacities of BE (287.3 mg/g), BE/P.CH (634.5 mg/g), and BE/P.HEMA-MMA (868.5 mg/g) obtained after 300 min, 240 min, and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic properties of BE follow the Pseudo-second order behavior (R2 = 0.93) while BE/P.CH and BE/P.HEMA-MMA are of Pseudo-First order behavior (R2 > 0.92). Based on the equilibrium studies, the three products are of Freundlich isotherm behavior (R2 > 0.9) and the uptake is of multilayer forms on heterogeneous surfaces. The Gaussian energies (>8 KJ/mol), Gibbs free energies (>20 to <40 KJ/mol), and enthalpies (>40 to <80 KJ/mol) give an indication about adsorption mechanism involved chemical and physical reactions. The thermodynamics of MPP uptake reactions by the three products are of endothermic and spontaneous behaviors. The MPP uptake in the presence of NH+4, PO4-3, Mn+2, and Pb+2 competitive ions reflects enhancement in the affinity of BE after the integration between it and the selected polymers.

Abstract
The ability to specify an adsorbed protein layer through the polymer chemistry design of immunomodulatory biomaterials is important when considering a desired immune response, such as reducing pro-inflammatory activity. Limited work has been undertaken to elucidate the role of monomer sequence in this process, when copolymeric systems are involved. In this study, we demonstrate the advantage of an alternating radical copolymerization strategy as opposed to a random statistical copolymerization to order monomers in the synthesis of degradable polar-hydrophobic-ionic polyurethanes (D-PHI), biomaterials originally designed to reduce inflammatory monocyte activation. A monomer system consisting of a vinyl-terminated polyurethane cross-linker, maleic acid (MA), and ethyl vinyl ether (EVE), not only generated a diverse chemical environment of polar, hydrophobic, and ionic functional groups, but also formed a charge transfer complex (CTC) reactive to alternating polymerizations. Conversion of MA and EVE occurred in a constant proportion regardless of monomer availability, a phenomenon not observed in conventional D-PHI formulations. For feeds with unequal molar quantities of MA and EVE, the final conversion was limited and proportional to the limiting reagent, leading to an overall higher polyurethane cross-linker content. The presence of a reactive CTC was also found to limit the monomer conversion. Compared to a D-PHI with random monomer arrangement using methacrylic acid (MAA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA), a reduction in Fab region exposure from adsorbed immunoglobulin G and a reduction in average adherent monocyte activity were found in the sequence-controlled version. These results represent the first example of using an alternating copolymerization approach to generate regularly defined polymer chemistries in radical chain-growth biomaterials for achieving immunomodulation, and highlight the importance of considering sequence control as a design strategy for future immunomodulatory biomaterial development.

Abstract
Although the exposure of polymeric materials to radiation is a well-established process, little is known about the relationship between structure and property and the biological behavior of biomaterials obtained by thermal phenomena at 1070 nm wavelength. This study includes results concerning the use of a novel infrared radiation source (ytterbium laser fiber) for the synthesis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel in order to produce medical devices. The materials were obtained by means of free radical polymerization mechanism and evaluated regarding its cross-linking degree, polymer chain mobility, thermal, and mechanical properties. Their potential use as a biomaterial toward cartilage tissue was investigated through incubation with chondrocytes cells culture by dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB) dye and DNA quantification. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that glass transition temperature (Tg) was in the range 103°C–119°C, the maximum degree of swelling was 70.8%, and indentation fluency test presented a strain of 56%–85%. A significant increase of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) concentration and DNA content in cells cultured with 40 wt% 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate was observed. Our results showed the suitability of infrared laser fiber in the free radicals formation and in the rapid polymer chain growth, and further cross-linking. The porous material obtained showed improvements concerning cartilage tissue regeneration.
