Polycondensation of thiophene-flanked cyanopyridine and carbazole via direct arylation polymerization for solar cell application

Nickel-Catalyzed Decarbonylation of Aromatic Carboxylic Acids with P(O)-H(2) Compounds to Form C-P Bonds

A novel strategy for C-P bond formation has been developed. The reaction employed aromatic carboxylic acids as the source of aromatic groups to couple with three types of P(O)-H(2) compounds without the need to isolate intermediates, thereby achieving a one-pot construction of carbon-phosphorus bonds. The protocol demonstrated excellent applicability and functional group tolerance, enabling the production of Ar-P(O)R2 and Ar2-PPh with moderate to excellent yields.

Synthesis, characterization, photophysical properties, and computational studies on N-hexylphenothiazine/cyanopyridine based π-conjugated copolymers

In this paper, π-conjugated copolymers, namely N-hexylphenothiazine/cyanopyridine/phenyl/benzothiadiazole, N-hexylphenothiazine/cyanopyridine/phenyl/9,9-dihexylfluorene, and N-hexylphenothiazine/cyanopyridine/phenyl/9,9-diethylhexylfluorene were readily synthesized via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The polymer structures and their photophysical properties were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, GPC, TGA, XRD, UV-vis absorption and PL spectroscopy measurements. The coupling agent effect on photophysical properties of copolymers was investigated to rationally design polymers with particular physical properties to be employed in optoelectronic devices. The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy of copolymers showed λmax at a range of ∼334–474 nm and red-shifted in their films to a range of ∼342–381 nm. These copolymers displayed highly intense fluorescence in their solutions and films. The PL spectra of copolymers indicated red and near-infrared light, rendering them a prospect for being red and near-infrared light-emitting materials for PLEDs. XRD analysis demonstrated a d-spacing range of ∼3.79–4.32 Å, reflecting π-π stacking and some degree of crystallinity in some polymers, and only P1 and P2 showed peaks in the small-angle region, indicating lamellar structures. To understand the relationship between molecular structures of target materials and their photophysical and photovoltaic properties, density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent form (TD-DFT) were employed.

Synthesis, characterization and electroluminescence studies of cyanopyridine-based π-conjugative polymers carrying benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole and naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c′]bis([1,2,5]thiadiazole) units

Four new cyanopyridine based polymers, i.e.TDPy1-4 were designed, synthesized and well-characterized. The detailed studies reveal that the polymers own all the prerequisites required for the PLED application as active green light emitters.

Simple thiophene-bridged D-π-A type chromophores for DSSCs: a comprehensive study of their sensitization and co-sensitization properties

Herein, we report the design and synthesis of four new thiophene-bridged D-π-A configured organic dyes T1-4 comprising different donors, π-spacers and anchoring units, as potential sensitizers and co-sensitizers for DSSCs. The current work also highlights their structural, photophysical, thermal, electrochemical, theoretical, and photoelectrochemical studies, including evaluation of their structure-property relationships. The optical results revealed that the dyes T1-4 display λabs and λemi in the range of 402-461 nm and 556-575 nm, respectively, with a bandgap in the order of 2.31-2.58 eV. Furthermore, the results showed that the dyes possess all the pre-requisites to act as sensitizers/co-sensitizers. Among the tested dyes, the device based on sensitizer T2 achieved the highest PCE compared to the other three dyes, under the standard conditions. Furthermore, their co-sensitized devices were fabricated by co-adsorbing them with the well-known Ru-based MH-12 sensitizer and interestingly the co-sensitizer T3 carrying an alkoxy group and a barbituric acid anchor displayed the highest PCE of 8.79%, which is much higher than that of MH-12 alone (8.18%). Conclusively, the study furnishes a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in the structural modification of sensitizers/co-sensitizers in achieving an enhanced performance of the devices.
