The Application of 2D Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4) and Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) in Low-Temperature Fuel Cells: Catalyst Supports, ORR Catalysts, and Membrane Fillers

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have gained remarkable attention due to their resemblance to graphene. These materials have a wide range of applications in energy and other sustainable fields, including heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. g-C3N4 and h-BN can play different roles in low-temperature fuel cells. They can be used as catalyst supports, catalysts for oxygen reduction, and membrane fillers. In this work, the application of pure and doped g-C3N4 and h-BN, alone or as composite materials, in low-temperature fuel cells is overviewed.

Anion Exchange Membranes with 1D, 2D and 3D Fillers: A Review

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) are clean energy conversion devices that are an attractive alternative to the more common proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), because they present, among others, the advantage of not using noble metals like platinum as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. The interest in this technology has increased exponentially over the recent years. Unfortunately, the low durability of anion exchange membranes (AEM) in basic conditions limits their use on a large scale. We present in this review composite AEM with one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional fillers, an approach commonly used to enhance the fuel cell performance and stability. The most important filler types, which are discussed in this review, are carbon and titanate nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide, layered double hydroxides, silica and zirconia nanoparticles. The functionalization of the fillers is the most important key to successful property improvement. The recent progress of mechanical properties, ionic conductivity and FC performances of composite AEM is critically reviewed.

Biochar-Based Graphitic Carbon Nitride Adorned with Ionic Liquid Containing Acidic Polymer: A Versatile, Non-Metallic Catalyst for Acid Catalyzed Reaction

A novel biochar-based graphitic carbon nitride was prepared through calcination of Zinnia grandiflora petals and urea. To provide acidic and ionic-liquid functionalities on the prepared carbon, the resultant biochar-based graphitic carbon nitride was vinyl functionalized and polymerized with 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid, acrylic acid and the as-prepared 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium chloride. The final catalytic system that benefits from both acidic (-COOH and -SO3H) and ionic-liquid functionalities was applied as a versatile, metal-free catalyst for promoting some model acid catalyzed reactions such as Knoevenagel condensation and Biginelli reaction in aqueous media under a very mild reaction condition. The results confirmed high activity of the catalyst. Broad substrate scope and recyclability and stability of the catalyst were other merits of the developed protocols. Comparative experiments also indicated that both acidic and ionic-liquid functionalities on the catalyst participated in the catalysis.
