Abstract
Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of serum fibrinogen domain-containing lectin-3 (Ficolin-3) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI). Methods This study retrospectively analyzed 126 SA-AKI patients with SA-AKI and 103 septic patients without AKI as controls. Based on the severity of renal injury, the SA-AKI patients were divided into three groups: mild (41 cases), moderate (53 cases), and severe (32 cases). Serum levels of Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 were measured using ELISA, and their correlation was determined through Pearson analysis. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the occurrence of SA-AKI. Results The serum creatinine (SCr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), as well as the expression levels of serum Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 in the SA-AKI group were higher than those in the non SA-AKI group (P<0.05). The expression levels of Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 in the serum of the SA-AKI group were also higher than those of the non SA-AKI group (P<0.05). The expression levels of Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 in serum gradually increased with the severity of renal injury in SA-AKI patients (P<0.05). The expression levels of Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 in serum were greatly positively correlated (P<0.001). Elevated levels of BUN, Ficolin-3, and Gal-3 were risk factors affecting the occurrence of SA-AKI (P<0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) of serum Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 for individual diagnosis of SA-AKI was 0.877 and 0.867, respectively, the AUC of their combined diagnosis was 0.953, and the diagnostic sensitivity was higher than that of their individual diagnosis (P<0.001). Conclusion The expression levels of serum Ficolin-3 and Gal-3 are closely related to associated with the onset and progression of SA-AKI and hold diagnostic value for its detection. Furthermore, the combined use of both markers provides a more accurate diagnosis than either marker alone.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI) often leads to heart failure (HF) through acute or chronic maladaptive remodeling processes. This establishes coronary artery disease (CAD) and HF as significant contributors to cardiovascular illness and death. Therefore, treatment strategies for patients with CAD primarily focus on preventing MI and lessening the impact of HF after an MI event. Myocardial fibrosis, characterized by abnormal extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, is central to cardiac remodeling. Understanding these processes is key to identifying new treatment targets. Recent studies highlight SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) as favorable options in managing type 2 diabetes due to their low hypoglycemic risk and cardiovascular benefits. This review explores inflammation's role in cardiac fibrosis and evaluates emerging anti-diabetic medications' effectiveness, such as SGLT2i, GLP1-RAs, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i), in preventing fibrosis in patients with diabetes post-acute MI. Recent studies were analyzed to identify effective medications in reducing fibrosis risk in these patients. By addressing these areas, we can advance our understanding of the potential benefits of anti-diabetic medications in reducing cardiac fibrosis post-MI and improve patient outcomes in individuals with diabetes at risk of HF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a biomarker involved in a wide range of diseases including cardiac remodeling following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Identification of prognostic markers in patients with AMI can guide strategies towards improved survival and quality of life. METHODS Our study included 59 patients with AMI and a preserved ejection fraction. We determined the Gal-3 plasma concentration within 24 h of chest pain onset from the aortic root, femoral/radial artery, coronary sinus and cubital vein. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were evaluated at six months follow-up. RESULTS MACE at six months post-AMI was recorded in 20 patients (34%). The Gal-3 plasma concentration from the aortic root and the femoral/radial artery were independent predictors of MACE at six months follow-up after the first AMI (OR 1.228; 95%CI: 1.011-1.491; p = 0.038; OR 3.438; 95%CI: 1.275-9.265; p = 0.015). ROC analysis identifies the Gal-3 plasma concentration from the aortic root as a better predictor of MACE or death (cut-off ≥ 10.86 ng/mL; AUC 0.858; 95%CI: 0.744-0.973; p < 0.001) than Gal-3 plasma concentration from the femoral/radial artery (cut-off ≥ 10.18 ng/mL; AUC 0.742; 95%CI: 0.596-0.888; p = 0.006). CONCLUSION the Gal-3 plasma concentration in patients with AMI determined during coronary angiography, especially from the aortic root, within 24 h after chest pain onset is a valuable biomarker of prognosis at six months follow-up.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an irregular atrial activity and the most prevalent type of arrhythmia. Although AF is easily diagnosed with an electrocardiogram, there is a keen interest in identifying an easy-to-dose biomarker that can predict the prognosis of AF and its recurrence. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a beta-galactoside binding protein from the lectin family with pro-fibrotic and -inflammatory effects and a pivotal role in a variety of biological processes, cell proliferation, and differentiation; therefore, it is implicated in the pathogenesis of many cardiovascular (e.g., heart failure (HF)) and noncardiovascular diseases. However, its specificity and sensitivity as a potential marker in AF patients remain debated and controversial. This article comprehensively reviewed the evidence regarding the interplay between Gal-3 and patients with AF. Clinical implications of measuring Gal-3 in AF patients for diagnosis and prognosis are mentioned. Moreover, the role of Gal-3 as a potential biomarker for the management of AF recurrence is investigated. The association of Gal-3 and AF in special populations (coronary artery disease, HF, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus) has been explored in this review. Overall, although further studies are needed to enlighten the role of Gal-3 in the diagnosis and treatment of AF, our study demonstrated the high potential of this molecule to be used and focused on by researchers and clinicians.

Abstract
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) refers to a complex rebuilding of the left ventricle that can gradually lead to serious complications-heart failure and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. LVH is defined as an increase in the size of the left ventricle (i.e., anatomically), therefore the basic diagnosis detecting the increase in the LV size is the domain of imaging methods such as echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance. However, to evaluate the functional status indicating the gradual deterioration of the left ventricular myocardium, additional methods are available approaching the complex process of hypertrophic remodeling. The novel molecular and genetic biomarkers provide insights on the underlying processes, representing a potential basis for targeted therapy. This review summarizes the spectrum of the main biomarkers employed in the LVH valuation.

Abstract
Galectin-3 as a cardiac biomarker has proven to be a significant prognostic tool in adults. However, it has not yet been established in the pediatric population as a biomarker in daily clinical practice. The aim of the study was to summarize the current knowledge on galectin-3 as a biomarker in children with cardiac conditions by reviewing the literature. Bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched, and consequently twelve articles met the inclusion criteria. Supplemental handsearching of references delivered one additional source. These prospective studies concerning galectin-3 as a cardiac biomarker present analyses performed in cohorts composed of healthy children and children with cardiovascular diseases. The results, despite being based on small cohort studies, inform that galectin-3 could serve as a potential biomarker in cardiovascular risk stratification in children with heart failure, arrhythmia, Kawasaki disease or in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The evidence for the usefulness of galectin-3 in the assessment of such pathologies as idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, coarctation of the aorta, functionally univentricular heart or tetralogy of Fallot were not completely confirmed. Galectin-3 seems to be a promising biomarker; however, there is a need for further research to establish its use in daily clinical practice.
