Family-centredness of professionals who support people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities: validation of the Dutch 'Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers' (MPOC-SP-PIMD)

Measurement of family-centered services: Validation of the Korean translation of the measure of processes of care for service providers

PURPOSE

The Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers (MPOC-SP) is a valid and reliable instrument to measure the professionals' perception of the extent to which they apply the principles of family-centered services in care for children with disabilities. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean translation of the MPOC-SP (Korean MPOC-SP).

METHODS

The Korean MPOC-SP was completed by 132 rehabilitation service providers in 5 provinces in South Korea. Analyses for internal consistency, construct validity, and test-retest reliability were performed.

RESULTS

The estimates of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) of the four scales of the Korean MPOC-SP ranged from 0.67 to 0.92. All the scales correlated highly with the other scales (r ranging from 0.61 to 0.77). In addition, all the items exhibited high item-total correlations (rs ranging from 0.40 to 0.83). Three scales had moderate to good reliability with ICCs ranging from 0.57 to 0.78; the 'providing general information (PGI)' scale showed low reliability (ICC 0.22).

CONCLUSION

The Korean MPOC-SP can be considered a valid instrument for group-level research purposes with acceptable internal consistency, but caution is warranted regarding the low test-retest reliability of the PGI scale.

Parental Stress and Family Quality of Life: Surveying Family Members of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

(1) Background. This study assesses the quality of life in families with a member with an intellectual disability using the Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response framework. (2) Methods. The study included 515 Spanish participants whose family members with disabilities range in age from infancy to adulthood. We hypothesized that it is possible to predict parenting stress by paying attention to the meaning families give to themselves and their circumstances while controlling for the impact of other variables such as family capabilities and characteristics of the family member with disabilities. We used the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale and the section on Exceptional needs of medical and behavioral support from the Supports Intensity Scale, together with other potential predictors. The subscale on parental stress from the Parenting Stress Index–Short Form was utilized as a criterion measure. (3) Results. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that 49% of parental stress was predicted by dysfunctional interaction, difficult behaviors, low emotional wellbeing, poor family interaction, as well as kinship as parents, and the severity of both the medical needs and intellectual disability. (4) Conclusions. The stress experienced by those families is mostly predicted by the meaning they give to themselves and their circumstances. Implications of these findings for service delivery are discussed.

Cross-cultural psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers questionnaire

Background

The Measure of Processes of Care is the most widely used tool for measuring family-centredness and perceptions of the care process. This study assessed the psychometric properties of the Persian language version of the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers questionnaire.

Methods

In a cross-sectional study, the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers questionnaire was translated three times based on a backward–forward method. The Persian version of the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers was used with 150 health providers in Iran. The Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach alpha and interclass correlation coefficient were used for reliability analysis. Content validity index and content validity ratio and confirmatory factor analysis was used for validity assessments.

Results

The test-retest correlation was higher than 0.95 and the interclass correlation coefficient was higher than 0.8 in all domains. The consistency coefficient was calculated as r=0.989 and the Cronbach alpha calculated as 0.994, which varied from 0.978 to 0.994. The content validity index average was 0.97, which varied from 0.90 to 0.99. Moreover, the content validity ratio average calculated 0.726 and ranged from 0.60 to 0.95. The goodness of fit index was acceptable as CMIN =χ2: 411.52, df; 280, P<0.001, CMIN/df; 1.47, root mean square error of approximation: 0.056; P value: 0.19, goodness of fit index and Tucker–Lewis index was 0.951 and 0.938 respectively.

Conclusion

The Persian translation of the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers questionnaire is a standard tool for assessing family-centred care with acceptable reliable and valid. It could be used in all health, clinical and rehabilitation centres to assess family-centred care in health care providers and can be an incentive to improve the quality of family-related services.

Measuring family-centred practices of professionals in early intervention services in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

Family-centred practices emphasize professional supports for forming partnerships with families in early intervention. The Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers (MPOC-SP) measures the perceptions of paediatric service providers in supporting children and families. This study aimed to establish reliability of the Chinese version of the MPOC-SP (C-MPOC-SP) and to examine professional perceptions of family-centred practices in relation to professional discipline and years of experience.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 94 physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers and early childhood educators completed the C-MPOC-SP. Thirty-seven professionals completed the measure a second time within 2-4 weeks for test-retest reliability. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were examined by Cronbach's α and intra-class correlation coefficient. Comparisons were made across professional disciplines by multivariate analyses of variance followed by analyses of variance. Relationships between years of experience and ratings of family-centred practices were examined by Pearson's correlation coefficients (r).

RESULTS

Cronbach's α for items on each of the four scales of the C-MPOC-SP ranged from 0.80 to 0.92, indicating adequate internal consistency. Intra-class correlation coefficient between the initial and repeat completion of the C-MPOC-SP for each scale ranged from 0.56 to 0.77, indicating adequate to excellent test-retest reliability. Mean ratings for the Communicating Specific Information were significantly higher for physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists than for social workers (P = 0.001). The C-MPOC-SP scores were positively correlated with years of experience for all four scales (r = 0.23-0.38; P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study established adequate internal consistency and adequate to excellent test-retest reliability of the C-MPOC-SP in measuring perceptions of family centeredness of early intervention service providers. Cross-discipline differences were found in communicating specific information about the child. Higher perceptions of family centeredness were associated with more years of experience. The results support the utility of the C-MPOC-SP in professional education and programme evaluation of early intervention services in Taiwan.

Effectiveness of a nurse-led preadmission intervention for parents of children with profound multiple disabilities undergoing hip-joint surgery: A quasi-experimental pilot study

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a family-centered care (FCC) intervention provided by an advanced practice nurse (APN) for parents of children with profound disabilities undergoing surgery.

DESIGN AND METHODS

In a quasi-experimental design, we used the MPOC-20 to assess satisfaction with FCC and interviews to identify potential mechanisms for improving satisfaction.

RESULTS

There was a positive effect on the MPOC-20 domain "general information," albeit with a small effect size (Cohen's d = 0.35). The interviewed parents expected additional support.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Emphasis should be placed on providing comprehensive care coordination by an experienced APN. Shared care management is crucial in improving FCC.

When children with profound multiple disabilities are hospitalized: A cross-sectional survey of parental burden of care, quality of life of parents and their hospitalized children, and satisfaction with family-centered care

PURPOSE

We aimed to assess parental burden of care, satisfaction with family-centered care, and quality of life (HRQoL) of parents and their hospitalized children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD), and determine the relationship among these factors.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study using printed questionnaires and qualitative questions was undertaken at a Swiss University Children's Hospital.

RESULTS

The 117 parents (98 mothers, 19 fathers) studied indicated a substantial impact on burden of care and parental health-related quality of life. Significant correlations with the hospitalized children's well-being were rs = .408 for burden of care and rs -.368 for quality of life. Qualitative results showed parents struggling to safeguard their children and worrying most about the children's well-being.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Health professionals need to be aware of parental burden and that the perception of the children's well-being and the parents' efforts determine their support needs. Easing parents' burden and fostering confidence in the hospitalized children's well-being requires coordination of care provided by advanced nurse specialists, with an institutional framework that clarifies parental collaboration.
