Abstract
BACKGROUND Both depression and asthma have a significant impact on the quality of life for individuals. Studies have shown that patients with depression often experience comorbid asthma; however, the precise relationship between these two conditions remains unclear. The objective of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between depression and asthma. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, we utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014 and employed logistic regression to assess the correlation between depression and asthma. In the subsequent Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, we selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) closely linked to both depression and asthma as instrumental variables, based on summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The inverse variance weighted method (IVW) was then applied to ascertain the causal relationship between depression and asthma. RESULTS Based on the results of the cross-sectional study, it was found that the status of depression was significantly associated with a higher risk of asthma (OR = 2.15, 95%CI = 1.79 ∼ 2.59, p < 0.001). Furthermore, in the MR analysis, a causal relationship was further identified between depression, severe depression, and the increased incidence of asthma (OR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.05 ∼ 1.18, p < 0.001), (OR = 1.01, 95%CI = 1.01 ∼ 1.02, p < 0.001); the results of the reverse MR analysis indicated no causal relationship between asthma and the increased incidence of depression and severe depression (OR = 1.01, 95%CI0.99 ∼ 1.03, p = 0.50), (OR = 1.07, 95%CI: 0.82 ∼ 1.40, p = 0.64). CONCLUSION This study has revealed a causal relationship between depression and an increased risk of developing asthma, offering new insights for the clinical intervention of both asthma and depression.

Abstract
Nearly 60% of asthmatics in the USA suffer from obesity. Asthma is a comorbid condition alongside obesity, commonly accompanied by conditions such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes. The positive effect of bariatric surgery on patients suffering from hypertension and type 2 diabetes, which leads to either a reduction in the dose of medication taken for the aforementioned diseases or the withdrawal of the disease, is quite well proven in the literature. Currently, the impact of bariatric operations on the control and course of bronchial asthma and pharmacological treatment has not been fully recognized and described, requiring further research; therefore, the following review of the literature was conducted.

Abstract
Several epidemiological studies have described childhood obesity as a risk factor for atopic disease, particularly asthma. At the same time, this association seems to be more conflicting for allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and chronic urticaria. This article aims to deepen the possibility of a relationship between childhood obesity and allergic diseases. As regards asthma, the mechanical and inflammatory effects of obesity can lead to its development. In addition, excess adiposity is associated with increased production of inflammatory cytokines and adipokines, leading to low-grade systemic inflammation and an increased risk of asthma exacerbations. Allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergies, and chronic urticaria also seem to be related to this state of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation typical of obese children. Vitamin D deficiency appears to play a role in allergic rhinitis, while dyslipidemia and skin barrier defects could explain the link between obesity and atopic dermatitis. Starting from this evidence, it becomes of fundamental importance to act on body weight control to achieve general and allergic health, disentangling the detrimental link between obesity allergic diseases and childhood obesity. Further studies on the association between adiposity and atopy are needed, confirming the biologically active role of fat tissue in the development of allergic diseases and exploring the possibility of new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS The association between obesity and asthma has been of interest, but whether the duration of asthma has an effect on obesity is still limitedly studied. AIM The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between asthma duration and obesity-related indexes, where obesity-related indexes include Body mass index (BMI) and Weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI). METHODS Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2018 were obtained to conduct this cross-sectional study. Duration of asthma was used as the independent variable and obesity-related indexes as the response variables. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between the independent variable and the response variables, and subsequently smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analysis were performed to clarify whether there was a nonlinear correlation between the independent variable and the response variables. Finally, subgroup analysis was conducted to find sensitive populations. RESULTS A total of 9170 participants were included in the analysis. Asthma duration was statistically different between the two groups when all participants were grouped by median WWI (Q1 < 11.65, Q2 ≥ 11.65) (P < 0.001), but not by median BMI (Q1 < 31.8, Q2 ≥ 31.8) (P = 0.130). There was a positive association between asthma duration and WWI [β = 0.016, 95% CI (0.016, 0.017)], but a negative one with BMI [β = - 0.098, 95% CI (- 0.112, - 0.085)], and the correlations between the independent and response variables became more pronounced with increasing asthma duration (P for trend < 0.01). In addition, there were nonlinear relationships between asthma duration with BMI and WWI (log likelihood ratio < 0.001), with the best valid inflection points for asthma duration being 2 years (with WWI as the response variable) and 3 years (with BMI as the response variable), respectively. In the subgroup analysis, the positive association between asthma duration and WWI was more pronounced in the participants who were male, aged less than 40 years, and had asthma onset before 12 years of age. In contrast, when BMI was used as the response variable, the negative association between it and asthma duration was more pronounced among participants of female, aged 60 years or older, and with asthma onset less than 12 years of age. CONCLUSIONS In US adults, asthma duration might cause changes in obesity-related indexes. Longer asthma duration might cause weight loss, but might increase the risk of abdominal obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transthoracic ultrasound (TUS) is an accepted complementary tool in the diagnostic process of several pleuro-pulmonary diseases. However, to the best of our knowledge, TUS findings in patients with severe asthma have never been systematically described. OBJECTIVE To explore if TUS examination is a useful imaging method in suggesting the presence of a "small airways disease" in patients with severe uncontrolled asthma. METHODS Seventy-two consecutive subjects with a diagnosis of severe uncontrolled asthma were enrolled. The presence of a "small airways disease" was assessed through the execution of pulmonary function tests. All the patients underwent a complete TUS examination and a chest high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), which was regarded as the reference standard for comparison with TUS findings. RESULTS Pulmonary function tests results have confirmed a reduction in expiratory flows relative to the small airways and a condition of hyperinflation in 78% and 82% of our patients, respectively. The main signs observed in the TUS examination were a thickened and/or irregular pleural line and the lack or reduction of the "gliding sign." TUS showed high sensitivity and specificity in suggesting the presence of hyperinflation and distal airways inflammation according to the HRCT scan. K Cohen's coefficients showed substantial agreement between the 2 diagnostic tests. CONCLUSION TUS in patients with severe uncontrolled asthma can provide useful information on the state of the peripheral lung, suggesting the execution of a second-line HRCT scan for better assessment of eventual alterations that may represent the underlying causes of nonresponse to treatment.

Abstract
Inflammation, which is induced by the immune response, is recognized as the driving factor in many diseases, including infections and inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders and cancers. Genetic variations in pivotal genes associated with the immune response, particularly single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), may account for predisposition and clinical outcome of diseases. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding protein (LBP) functions as an enhancer of the host response to LPS, the main component of the outer membrane of gram-native bacteria. Given the crucial role of LBP in inflammation, we will review the impact of SNPs in the LBP gene on infections and inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders and cancers.
