Crystal structure and EPR studies of mixed ligand complex of cobalt(II) with saccharin and ethylisonicotine

EPR study of Cu(2+) ion doped orotato(nicotinamid)cobalt(II) single crystal

We have studied the Cu(2+) ion doped orotato(nicotinamid)cobalt(II) complex by using EPR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The single crystal is triclinic with the space group P1‾. The unit cell dimensions of the crystal are a=7.2785(4)Å, b=10.2349(5)Å, c=12.7372(6)Å, α=69.297(4)°, β=74.791(4)° and γ=76.995(4)°, with Z=2. We analyzed the EPR spectra of both single crystal and powder of the complex at room temperature. EPR analysis indicates the presence of only one Cu(2+) site. We obtained the spin Hamiltonian parameters from the single crystal data for the complex. The spin Hamiltonian parameters are gx=2.032, gy=2.116, gz=2.319, Ax=28G, Ay=66G, Az=126G. These data indicate that the symmetry of paramagnetic center is rhombic. We constructed the ground state wave function of the Cu(2+) ion.

Synthesis, crystal structure, EPR spectra of Cu2+ doped [Zn(methylisonicotinate)2(H2O)4]·(sac)2 single crystal

The tetraaquabis(methylisonicotinate)zinc(II) disaccharinate [hereafter, [Zn(mein)2(H2O)4]·(sac)2], complex has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic IR, EPR and X-ray diffraction technique. The octahedral Zn(II) ion, which rides on a crystallographic centre of symmetry, is coordinated by two monodentate mein ligands through the ring nitrogen and four aqua ligands to form discrete [Zn(mein)2(H2O)4] unit, which captures two saccharinate ions in up and down positions, each through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The magnetic environments of Cu2+ doped [Zn(mein)2(H2O)4]·(sac)2 complex have been identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. EPR spectra of Cu2+ doped [Zn(mein)2(H2O)4]·(sac)2 single crystals have been studied between 113 and 300 K in three mutually perpendicular planes. The calculated results of the Cu2+ doped [Zn(mein)2(H2O)4]·(sac)2 indicate that Cu2+ ion contains two different complexes and each complexes are located in different chemical environments and each environment contains two magnetically inequivalent Cu2+ sites in distinct orientations occupying substitutional positions in the lattice. The vibrational spectra of this compound were discussed in relation to other compounds containing methyl isonicotinate and saccharinate complexes. The assignments of the observed bands were discussed.

Studies on the spin-Hamiltonian parameters of CuN(6) clusters and their tetragonal distortions due to Jahn-Teller effect for Cu2+ in trigonal M(1-propyltetrazole)6(BF4)2 (M=Zn, Fe) crystals

This paper reports the theoretical calculations for the anisotropic and isotropic spin-Hamiltonian parameters (g factors and the hyperfine structure constants) of tetragonal CuN6 octahedral clusters due, respectively, to the static and dynamic Jahn-Teller effects for Cu2+ ion in the trigonal M(=Zn, Fe) sites of M(1-propyltetrazole)6(BF4)2 crystals. The calculations are carried out using the high-order perturbation formulas based on a two-mechanism model, in which besides the contributions to spin-Hamiltonian parameters due to the crystal-field mechanism concerning the crystal-field excited states in the extensively used crystal-field theory, the contributions due to charge-transfer mechanism concerning the charge-transfer excited states (which are neglected in the crystal-field theory) are included. The calculated results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values. From the calculations the tetragonal elongations ΔR=R//-R⊥ (where R// and R⊥ denote the Cu-N distances parallel with and perpendicular to the C4 axis) of CuN6 octahedral clusters due to Jahn-Teller effect are obtained. The results are discussed.
