Covalent organic frameworks as multifunctional materials for chemical detection

Sensitive and selective detection of chemical and biological analytes is critical in various scientific and technological fields. As an emerging class of multifunctional materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with their unique properties of chemical modularity, large surface area, high stability, low density, and tunable pore sizes and functionalities, which together define their programmable properties, show promise in advancing chemical detection. This review demonstrates the recent progress in chemical detection where COFs constitute an integral component of the achieved function. This review highlights how the unique properties of COFs can be harnessed to develop different types of chemical detection systems based on the principles of chromism, luminescence, electrical transduction, chromatography, spectrometry, and others to achieve highly sensitive and selective detection of various analytes, ranging from gases, volatiles, ions, to biomolecules. The key parameters of detection performance for target analytes are summarized, compared, and analyzed from the perspective of the detection mechanism and structure-property-performance correlations of COFs. Conclusions summarize the current accomplishments and analyze the challenges and limitations that exist for chemical detection under different mechanisms. Perspectives on how future directions of research can advance the COF-based chemical detection through innovation in novel COF design and synthesis, progress in device fabrication, and exploration of novel modes of detection are also discussed.

Photophysical Properties of an Azine-Linked Pyrene-Cinnamaldehyde Hybrid: Evidence of Solvent-Dependent Charge-Transfer-Coupled Excimer Emission

We report the photophysical properties of a synthetic asymmetric azine-based compound (17Z,18E)-4'-((E)-3-phenylallylidene)-1'-(dimethylamino)-1-((pyren-8-yl)methylene)hydrazine (PYNC). The molecule PYNC shows an appreciable red shift in the emission maximum in a wide range of solvents. In water, PYNC shows the characteristic feature of excimer formation exclusively. However, in all other solvents, the excimer band is present alongside the charge transfer emission band. The assignment of charge transfer and excimer bands has been established by various steady-state emission spectral data. PYNC, owing to this novel excimer-coupled charge transfer phenomenon, can be a potential probe for studying various supramolecular assemblies of biological interest.

An azine based sensor for selective detection of Cu2+ ions and its copper complex for sensing of phosphate ions in physiological conditions and in living cells

A simple and cost effective unsymmetrical azine based Schiff base, 5-diethylamino-2-[(2-hydroxy-benzylidene)hydrazonomethyl]-phenol (1) was synthesized which selectively detect Cu²⁺ ions in the presence of other competitive ions through "naked eye" in physiological conditions (EtOH-buffer (1:1, v/v, HEPES 10mM, pH=7.4)). The presence of Cu²⁺ induce color change from light yellow green to yellow with the appearance of a new band at 450nm in UV-Vis spectra of Schiff base 1. The fluorescence of Schiff base 1 (10μM) was quenched completely in the presence of 2.7 equiv. of Cu²⁺ ions. Sub-micromolar limit of detection (LOD=3.4×10^-7M), efficient Stern-Volmer quenching constant (K_SV=1.8×10⁵Lmol^-1) and strong binding constant (log K_b=5.92) has been determined with the help of fluorescence titration profile. Further, 1-Cu²⁺ complex was employed for the detection of phosphate ions (PO₄^3-, HPO₄^2- and H₂PO₄^-) at micromolar concentrations in EtOH-buffer of pH7.4 based on fluorescence recovery due to the binding of Cu²⁺ with phosphate ions. Solubility at low concentration in aqueous medium, longer excitation (406nm) and emission wavelength (537nm), and biocompatibility of Schiff base 1 formulates its use in live cell imaging.

Investigation of aggregation induced emission in 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde azine and polyazine towards application in (opto) electronics: synthesis, characterization, photophysical and electrical properties

An azine monomer 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde azine was synthesized by refluxing with ethanolic solution of vanillin with hydrazine hydrate. It was then converted into polyazine by oxidative polymerization. The structure of azine and polyazine was characterized by FT-IR, UV–visible, ¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR. Spectral results suggest the formation of polymer, through C–C and C–O–C coupling of the phenylene and oxyphenylene. The relationship between the structures and photophysical properties of azine and polyazine was studied. Both azine and polyazine show, aggregation induced emission with increase in concentration in DMSO solution. The single crystal structure of azine suggesting the various inter and intra molecular interactions rigidify the conformation and locked the intramolecular rotations of the phenyl rings in the molecule. The inhibition of intramolecular rotation, J- aggregation and increase of conjugation impart the fluorescence in aggregated state. Additionally, the electronic properties namely orbital energies and resulting energy gap calculated theoretically by density functional theory (DFT).
