Structural and vibrational spectral investigations of melaminium glutarate monohydrate by FTIR, FT-Raman and DFT methods

Multicomponent supramolecular assemblies of 1(2H)-Phthalazinone and Tetrafluoroterephthalic acid: Understanding the role of hydrogen bonding on the structure and properties using experimental and computational analyses

Two novel cocrystals were successfully constructed by 1(2H)-Phthalazinone (PHT) and Tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TETA) based on O-H⋯O, N-H⋯O, C-H⋯O, C-H⋯F, N-H⋯N and C-H⋯N hydrogen bonding networks, and were well depicted by single crystal diffraction analysis. As predicted by electrostatic potential analysis, the stoichiometry of PHT to TETA is 2:1 and stabilized by O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The single crystal X-ray diffraction characterized that the two cocrystals were all made up by 2PHT-TETA motif in different ways. AIM analysis and Hirshfeld surfaces indicated the adjacent 2PHT-TETA units assemble through C-H⋯O, C-H⋯F and C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, producing a 2D plane structure in cocrystal I. Meanwhile, the C-H⋯F, N-H⋯N and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between 2PHT-TETA units were the stabilizing factors in cocrystal II. Topological parameters such as ∇²ρ and H revealed the strength of hydrogen bonds were moderate in nature except O31⋯H32-O34 (1.704Å, -60.336kJmol^-1) in compound I. The hydrogen bonding interactions, cocrystal stability and electron donor-acceptor interactions were investigated using natural bonding orbital analysis. It showed that electron transfer of n(O) σ*(O-H) and n(O) σ*(N-H) between PHT and TETA influence the packing characteristics significantly. Structural changes accompanying cocrystal process have been rationalized through the IR spectrum along with the quantum chemical calculations. The frequency downshifts of CO, N-H and O-H stretching after cocrystallization have been attributed to hydrogen bonding interactions.

Morpholine-Based Gemini Surfactant: Synthesis and Its Application for Reverse Froth Flotation of Carnallite Ore in Potassium Fertilizer Production

Potassium fertilizer plays a critical role in increasing the food production. Carnallite is concentrated by reverse froth flotation and used as a raw material to produce potassium fertilizer (KCl) in agriculture. However, all the surfactants used in the carnallite reverse flotation process are conventional monomeric surfactants contain a single similar hydrophobic group in the molecule, which results in a low production efficiency. In this work, a new morpholine-based Gemini surfactant, 1,4-bis (morpholinododecylammonio) butane dibromide (BMBD), was prepared and originally recommended as a collector for reverse froth flotation separation of halite (NaCl) from carnallite ore. The flotation results indicated BMBD had higher flotation recovery and stronger affinity of halite against carnallite compared with conventional monomeric surfactant N-(n-Dodecyl) morpholine (DDM). Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that BMBD molecules were adsorbed on halite surface rather than the carnallite surface. Additionally, BMBD molecules can strongly reduce the surface tension of NaCl saturated solution. Considering the BMBD's unique properties, such as double reactive centers to mineral surfaces, double hydrophobic groups, and stronger surface tension reducing ability, made it be a superior collector for reverse flotation desalination from carnallite ores than DDM.

DFT computations on vibrational spectra: Scaling procedures to improve the wavenumbers

The performance of ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) methods in calculating the vibrational wavenumbers in the isolated state was analyzed. To correct the calculated values, several scaling procedures were described in detail. The two linear scaling equation (TLSE) procedure leads to the lowest error and it is recommended for scaling. A comprehensive compendium of the main scale factors and scaling equations available to date for a good accurate prediction of the wavenumbers was also shown. Examples of each case were presented, with special attention to the benzene and uracil molecules and to some of their derivatives. Several DFT methods and basis sets were used. After scaling, the X3LYP/DFT method leads to the lowest error in these molecules. The B3LYP method appears closely in accuracy, and it is also recommended to be used. The accuracy of the results in the solid state was shown and several additional corrections are presented.
