Abstract
1,3,4-Oxadiazole pharmacophore is still considered a viable biologically active scaffold for the synthesis of more effectual and broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents. Therefore, the present study is based on five 1,3,4-oxadiazole target structures, viz., CAROT, CAROP, CARON (D-A-D-A systems) and NOPON and BOPOB (D-A-D-A-D systems) bearing various bioactive heterocyclic moieties relevant to potential biological activities. Three of the compounds, CARON, NOPON and BOPOB were assessed in-vitro for their efficacy as antimicrobial agents against gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) and gram negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia) bacteria; and two fungi, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans; also, as an anti-tuberculosis agent against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Most of the tested compounds displayed promising antimicrobial activity, especially CARON which was then analyzed for the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) studies. Similarly, NOPON portrayed the highest anti-TB activity among the studied compounds. Consequently, to justify the detected anti-TB activity of these compounds and to recognize the binding mode and important interactions between the compounds and the ligand binding site of the potential target, these compounds were docked into the active binding site of cytochrome P450 CYP121 enzyme of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, 3G5H. The docking results were in good agreement with the result of in-vitro studies. In addition, all the five compounds were tested for their cell viability and have been investigated for cell labeling applications. To conclude, one of the target compounds, CAROT was used for the selective recognition of cyanide ion by 'turn-off' fluorescent sensing technique. The entire sensing activity was examined by spectrofluorometric method and MALDI spectral studies. The limit of detection obtained was 0.14 µM.

Abstract
In this work, a novel probe R was synthesized via Knoevenagel reaction between 3H-benzo[f]chromium-2-formaldehyde and ethyl cyanoacetate for selective detection of CN- in both colorimetric and fluorescent signal channels. The recognition of CN- was through the nucleophilic reaction of CN- to C = C of probe R, which destroys π-conjugation and blocks the ICT effect of the probe, resulting in colorimetric and fluorometric responses. Probe R showed great sensitivity toward CN-, with large fluorescent emission (595 nm) and low detection limit (0.70 μM). Moreover, probe R can detect exogenous CN- in living cells.

Abstract
We constructed a novel-binding site for metal ion detection using a fused tetrazole ring conjugated with aminopyrene (R). The designed structure of the molecule was successfully synthesized and determined the probe's selectivity by testing various metal ions and found that the probe effectively detects Al3+ ion visually. Checked the sensing ability of the probe with different approaches (fluorimetric and colorimetric), and the effectiveness is double confirmed. The added Al3+ ion to R procured a rapid change in color from yellowish orange to colorless. Under the UV lamp, a turn-on blue fluorescence was observed after adding aluminium ion, whereas the probe was non-fluorescent before detecting aluminium ion. The probable interface of the probe with aluminium ion has also been expected from HRMS spectral analysis results. The probe's utility in real-time monitoring of Al3+ ion in water is confirmed by a simple test kit prepared using filter paper. The kit showed a possible naked-eye detection with a notable color change, and when checked, the aluminium ion detected test kit under a UV lamp showed blue fluorescence.

Abstract
Exploring a new multi-responsive pyranone chemosensor capable of sensing copper ions specifically and selectively through colorimetric, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence methods is of great importance. In this piece of work, a novel pyranone based Schiff base ligand 4-Hydroxy-6-methyl-3-[1-(2-morpholin-4-yl-ethylimino)-ethyl]-pyran-2-one (DM) was synthesized by the condensation of dehydroacetic acid and 4-(2-aminoethyl) morpholine. The structural determination of ligand DM was executed using distinct spectral techniques i.e.,1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR and HR-MS techniques. The reported Schiff base DM showed an immediate colorimetric change from pale yellow to colorless accompanied by a strong change in the UV-Vis absorption band onto the addition of Cu (II) ions. This metal ligand chelation leads a decrease in ICT process. Also the decrease in fluorescence emission intensity of Schiff base DM with Cu (II) ions addition showed its turn-off behavior towards copper ions. Further absorption/ emission titration studies, Job's plot, HR-MS and 1H NMR titration data designated 2:1 stoichiometric ratio between DM and Cu (II) ions respectively. Density functional theory studies were also performed to authenticate the binding mechanism theoretically. The sensitivity of Schiff base DM towards Cu (II) ions was applicable at every pH conditions and at the same time DM exhibited selectivity towards Cu (II) ions with a negligible interference of other metal ions. DM showed a detection limit of 7.7 nM towards copper ions via fluorescence emission studies. The best part about DM is that it has good stability but showed an instant chemical reversibility when titrated with EDTA solution.

Abstract
An alkoxy-substituted 1,3-indanedione-based chemodosimeter 1 with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic was rationally designed and synthesized for the ultrasensitive and selective sensing of cyanide in a wide pH range of 3.0-12.0. The nucleophilic addition of cyanide to the β-conjugated carbon of the 1,3-indanedione group obstructs intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and causes a significant change in the absorption and fluorescence spectra, enabling colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent detection of cyanide in a 90% aqueous solution. The cyanide-sensing mechanism is supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, and 1H NMR titration experiments. Sensor 1 exhibits strong yellow fluorescence in the solid state due to the AIE effect, and the paper probes containing 1 can be conveniently used to sense cyanide by the naked eye. Furthermore, chemodosimeter 1 was successfully used for sensing cyanide in real environmental water samples.

Abstract
Novel dual-mode colorimetric/fluorometric probes based on 3-dicyanovinylpyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines for cyanide (CN-) sensing have been developed (DPPa-c). These probes displayed high selectivity and sensitivity toward CN- over other interfering anions, with a detection limit (LOD) as low as 610/170 nmol L-1 (absorption/emission) for some of the prepared probes. After a reaction with CN-, low-fluorescent DPPa-c showed a significant decrease of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) bands at approximately 390 nm (color changes from yellow to colorless) and exhibited up to an 82-fold fluorescence enhancement at approximately 465 nm (strong blue-light emission). The successive introduction of 4-anisyl (4-MeOPh) groups on periphery of the heterocyclic core had a dramatic influence on both the photophysical properties and CN- detection capability. The number of channels for CN- quantification in the absorption spectra increased from 1 in DPPa to 3 in DPPc. Moreover, the fluorescence emission LOD decreased from 300 nmol L-1 in DPPa to 170 nmol L-1 in DPPc. Finally, the selectivity toward CN- demonstrated a notable improvement when the probe had three 4-anisyl groups in its periphery (i.e., DPPc).

Abstract
Analytical methods often involve expensive instrumentation and tedious sample pretreatment for an analyte detection. Being toxic and detrimental to human health, sensing of cyanide (CN-), fluoride (F-), chloride (Cl-), bromide (Br-), nitrate (NO3 -), acetate (CH3COO-), and bisulfate (HSO4 -) is performed by a boron-based molecular receptor, N,N,N,3,5-pentamethyl-4-{2-thia-9-boratricyclo[8.4.0.03,8]tetradeca-1(10),3(8),4,6,11,13-hexaen-9-yl}anili-nium (1), and the three newly designed receptors from it. Thermodynamics, electronic structure, and photophysical properties are computed by employing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to explore selective sensing of these anions and its mechanism. Free-energy changes (ΔG) and binding energies (ΔE) suggest that among these anions, only binding of CN- and F- is thermodynamically feasible with a very strong binding affinity with the receptors. Boron atoms containing positive natural charges act as the electrophilic centers to bind the anions involving a 2p-2p orbital overlap resulting in charge transfer. In the receptor-analyte complexes with CN- and F-, fluorescence is quenched due to the intramolecular charge transfer transitions (π-π* transitions in the case of the receptors lead to fluorescence), internal conversion, and associated configurational changes. Among the six tested functionals, CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d) is found to be the most accurate one. The designed receptors are better fluorescent probes for F- and CN-, demonstrating their importance for the practical utility.

Abstract
A simple and new chromogenic azo-azomethine chemosensor N'-(5-((2,4-dichloro- phenyl) diazenyl)-2-hydroxylbenzylidene) picolinohydrazide (L) has been synthesized as an effective colorimetric sensor for cyanide ion. The sensing behavior of the probe L towards CN- over other anions was examined by naked-eye, UV-vis spectroscopy and NMR studies. L exhibited a selective sensing ability to CN- in DMSO/H2O(6:4, v:v) binary solution and DMSO/Tris(10 mM, pH = 7.1, 6:4, v:v) buffer solution by changing color from colorless to yellow. The detection limit was calculated to be 6.4 μM. The recognition mechanism was attributed to deprotonation process according to 1H NMR titration method. Moreover, test strips coated with L were easily fabricated with low cost and could be used to detect CN- in aqueous solution conveniently.

Abstract
The binding selectivity and recognition mechanism of a series of mono-, di- and triphosphonium substituted triarylboranes: (4-(dimesitylboryl)-3,5-dimethylphenyl)phosphonium ([Mes2BArP]+, 1), 1,1'-mesitylboranediylbis(3,5-dimethylphenyl)phosphonium ([MesBArP2]2+, 2) and 1,1',1''-boranetriyltris(3,5-dimethylphenyl)phosphonium ([BArP3]3+, 3) where ArP = 4-(H3P)-2,6-Me2-C6H2, for various anions has been investigated by employing density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. Natural population analysis indicates the electrophilic nature of the boron centers in 1-3 for the nucleophilic addition of anions. The calculated free energy changes (ΔG) reveal that out of CN-, F-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, CH3COO- and HSO4- only the binding of CN- and F- with 1, 2 and 3 is thermodynamically feasible. In addition, the calculated binding energies reflect that CN- shows lesser binding affinity than F- with 1, 2 and 3. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis reveals that the first excited states (S1) of 1-3 are the local excited states with a π → π* transition, whereas the third excited state (S3), fifth excited state (S5), fourth excited state (S4) and fourth excited states (S4) of [Mes2BArP]+F (1F, the fluoro form of 1), [MesBArP2]2+F (2F, the fluoro form of 2), [Mes2BArP]+CN (1CN, the cyano form of 1) and [MesBArP2]2+CN (2CN, the cyano form of 2), respectively, are charge separation states found to be responsible for the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. The partial configuration changes and ICT induce fluorescence quenching in 1F, 2F, 1CN and 2CN synergistically after an internal conversion (IC) from their respective S3, S5, S4 and S4 to S1.

Abstract
In this paper, we have designed and synthesized a novel sensor L1 based on asymmetric double-azine derivatives, which showed both "naked eye" recognition and fluorescence responses for CN- in DMSO/H2O (v/v=4:1, pH=7.20) solution. This simple sensor L1 could distinguish CN- from coexisting anions via the way of deprotonation and sensing mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and the minimum detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor L1 towards CN- was down to 9.47×10-7M. Moreover, we have successfully utilized the sensor L1 to detect CN- in bitter almond. Test strips containing L1 were also prepared, which could act as a practical colorimetric tool to detect CN- in aqueous media.

Abstract
The anion binding selectivity and the recognition mechanism of two isomeric boranes, namely, 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline ([p-(Mes2B)C6H4(NMe3)]+, 1, where "Mes" represents mesitylene and "Me" represents methyl) and 2-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline ([o-(Mes2B)C6H4(NMe3)]+, 2) has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. Natural population analysis indicates that the central boron atoms in 1 and 2 are the most active centers for nucleophilic addition of anions. The negative magnitude of free energy changes (ΔG) reveals that out of CN-, F-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, and HSO4- only the binding of CN- and F- with 1 and 2 is thermodynamically feasible and spontaneous. In addition, the calculated binding energies reveal that the CN- is showing lesser binding affinity than F- both with 1 and 2, while other ions, viz. NO3-, HSO4-, Br-, and Cl-, either do not bind at all or show very insignificant binding energy. The first excited states (S1) of 1 and 2 are shown to be the local excited states with π → σ* transition by frontier molecular orbital analysis, whereas fourth excited states (S4) of 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline cyanide ([p-(Mes2B)C6H4(NMe3)] CN, 1CN, the cyano form of 1) and 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline fluoride ([p-(Mes2B)C6H4(NMe3)] F, 1F, the fluoro form of 1) and fifth excited state (S5) of 2-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline fluoride ([o-(Mes2B)C6H4(NMe3)] F, 2F, the fluoro form of 2) are charge separation states that are found to be responsible for the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. The synergistic effect of ICT and partial configuration changes induce fluorescence quenching in 1CN, 1F, and 2F after a significant internal conversion (IC) from S4 and S5 to S1.

Abstract
Latent catalysts can be tuned to function smartly by assigning a sensing threshold using the displacement approach for targeted analytes. Three cyano-bridged bimetallic complexes were synthesized as "smart" latent catalysts through the supramolecular assembly of different metallic donors [FeII(CN)6]4-, [FeII(tBubpy)(CN)4]2-, and FeII(tBubpy)2(CN)2 with a metallic acceptor [CuII(dien)]2+. The investigation of both their thermodynamic and kinetic properties on binding with toxic pollutants provided insight into their smart off-on catalytic capabilities, enabling us to establish a threshold-controlled catalytic system for the degradation of pollutants such as cyanide and oxalate. With these smart latent catalysts, a new catalyst displacement assay (CDA) was demonstrated and applied in a real wastewater treatment process to degrade cyanide pollutants in both domestic (level I, untreated) and industrial wastewater samples collected in Hong Kong, China. The smart system was adjusted to be able to initiate the catalytic oxidation of cyanide at a threshold concentration of 20 μM (the World Health Organization's suggested maximum allowable level for cyanide in wastewater) to the less harmful cyanate under ambient conditions.

Abstract
A simple chemosensor YS based on coumarin group was designed and synthesized. Its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of cyanide the sensor showed an immediate visible change in color from colorless to pale yellow by naked-eyes and produced a strong blue fluorescence rapidly in DMSO/H2O (3:7, v/v). The detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor to CN- is down to 1.69×10-7M. In addition YS could show fluorescence turn-on response rapidly for Zn2+ over other metals ions such as Fe3+, Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ and Mg2+ in aqueous solutions. Notably, this sensor served as a molecular switch, which was controlled by Zn2+ and EDTA cyclically. Test strips based on YS were fabricated, which could act as a convenient and efficient CN- and Zn2+ test kit. This chemosensor could achieve the detection of two ions, which need not depend on two different sensors.
