Simultaneous detection of different probe molecules using silver nanowires as SERS substrates

Size controlled silver nanoparticles on β-cyclodextrin/graphitic carbon nitride: an excellent nanohybrid material for SERS and catalytic applications

A nanohybrid (NH), having high dispersion of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN), designated as AgNPs/β-CD/g-CN-NH, was synthesized and characterized. It was exploited for a couple of environmental remediation applications like SERS sensing and catalytic reduction of specific organic pollutants in water. It showed excellent SERS activity as a Raman probe for the detection of malachite green (MG). Its enhancement factor (EF) and detection limit for MG were equal to 7.26 × 10⁶ and 1 × 10^-9 M, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was equal to 3.8% which indicates high homogeneity of AgNP dispersion and signal reproducibility of the SERS substrate. The NH displayed high catalytic activity for the reduction of eosin yellow (EY) in the presence of NaBH₄ with the rate constant (k) of 0.1142 min^-1. A comparison of the present NH with other reported materials reveals better SERS and catalytic activities of the former than those of the latter. The SERS activity of the NH was also examined for sensing of other triphenylamine dyes like methyl violet (MV), and it was successful. The same NH also exhibited high catalytic activity towards the reduction of Congo red (CR). The results of both studies clarify that the NH is an excellent SERS substrate and efficient catalyst for the detection of organic environmental pollutants having structures similar to MG and their degradation. This is due to the distribution of the controlled size of AgNPs on g-CN promoted by β-CD. Therefore, we focus our attention on future environmental applications of the nanohybrid as a very cheap SERS substrate and a very active catalyst.

A facile synthesis of silver nanowires and their evaluation in the mitochondrial membrane potential

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) with a high-aspect-ratio were successfully synthesized by a green method using Lavandula angustifolia plant extract. The morphology of the AgNWs was evaluated as a function of the concentration of precursor salt and nucleating agent. Furthermore, AgNWs were analyzed in a biological model using rat liver mitochondria by measuring their effect on membrane potential. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques structurally characterized the nanowires obtained. Also, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) investigated the optical properties of AgNWs. Structural studies show AgNWs fcc with lengths up to 100 μm and diameters ranging from 60 to 130 nm growing in the [110] orientation. Both the CuSO₄ nucleating agent and the centrifugation process are essential for the growth of nanowires. Furthermore, inhibition of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) depends on the concentration of the nanowires (NWs), suggesting dissipation of the electron transport chain. In this way, AgNWs can be used as a potential tool to verify biological reactions, such as modulation of metabolic pathways, together with the evaluation of a possible influence of biotic or abiotic factors in organisms.

Paper swab based SERS detection of non-permitted colourants from dals and vegetables using a portable spectrometer

Rising concern about the use of non-permitted colourants, in common food items such as dals and green vegetables sold in Indian markets, have led to a demand for low-cost point-of-use chemical analysis tools. Conventional food-analysis techniques involving tedious sample preparation protocols are not suited for in-field applications. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is an analytical technique that is well-suited for point-of-use chemical analysis with molecular level detection capability, which can also serve as a quality assurance tool for businesses. Effective and rapid signal collection from a large-area sample within a field-setting using disposable, low-cost SERS substrates is a key challenge in implementing such a solution. Herein, we demonstrate the use of inkjet-printed thin films comprising of robust nanostructured-silver as flexible, paper-based SERS (P-SERS) swabs for the direct detection of Metanil Yellow (MY) from toor dal (yellow split pigeon peas) samples and Malachite Green (MG) from green peas and green chillies. The macroscopic uniformity of these thin-films in combination with a portable Raman spectrometer equipped with orbital raster scanning (ORS™) technology for signal collection results in an unprecedented precision (RSD ∼ 1.6%) upon characterizing samples saturated with Rhodamine-6G (R6G), a standard Raman probe. As several food-cleansing products have appeared in the marketplace, the adulterant removal efficacy of some commercially available 'washes' as well as products such as 'ozoniser', which was determined by SERS characterization of swabs before and after use, is also reported.
