Design and application of dual-emission metal-organic framework-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel inorganic-organic hybridized crystals with a wide range of applications. In the last twenty years, fluorescence sensing based on MOFs has attracted much attention. MOFs can exhibit luminescence from metal nodes, ligands or introduced guests, which provides an excellent fluorescence response in sensing. However, single-signal emitting MOFs are susceptible to interference from concentration, environment, and excitation intensity, resulting in poor accuracy. To overcome the shortcomings, dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors have been proposed and rapidly developed. In this review, we first introduce the luminescence mechanisms, synthetic methods, and detection mechanisms of dual-emission MOFs, highlight the strategies for constructing ratiometric fluorescence sensors based on dual-emission MOFs, and classify them into three categories: intrinsic dual-emission and single-emission MOFs with luminescent guests, and non-emission MOFs with other luminescent materials. Then, we summarize the recent advances in dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors in various analytical industries. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and prospects for the future development of these sensors.

Achiral Sm(III)-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Luminescence Sensor for Enantiodiscrimination of Quinine and Quinidine

The effective discrimination and determination of the chiral antimalarial drugs quinine (QN) and quinidine (QD) are extremely important for human health. Herein, a 2D achiral Sm-based metal-organic framework (IMU-MOF1 = [Sm(tpba)(L)]n, where Htpba = 4-(2,2':6″,2'-terpyridin)-4'-ylbenzioc acid and H2L = 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid) was successfully prepared by the solvothermal method. More importantly, IMU-MOF1 was designed as an ultrasensitive fluorescent probe for the identification of chiral enantiomer drugs. The limits of detection for QN and QD are 4.24 × 10-11 and 7.54 × 10-12 M, respectively. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions between IMU-MOF1 and quinine furnish a more efficient energy transfer to the ligands in the sensing process, resulting in a significant fluorescence enhancement of IMU-MOF1.

ClO- Induced Dual-Excitation Fluorescent Probes Responding to Diverse Testing Modes with Ratio Methodology

Single-excitation ratio fluorescent probes have enabled the output signal with high signal-to-noise ratio, but are still plagued with technique challenges, including signal distortion and limited application scenario. Herein, a dual-excitation near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe P1 of coumarin derivatives is constructed, showing high signal output ability in the visible region and high tissue penetration depth ability in the NIR region. As NIR probe P1 selectively recognizes ClO^-, the emission signal in the visible region (480 nm) of P1 is enhanced during the recognition process. Meanwhile, the NIR emission (830 nm) of the conjugated system is weakened, finally realizing that ClO^- triggered the dual-excitation (720/400 nm) ratio fluorescence signal detection and monitoring. The signal of detection in vitro has high responsiveness. Meanwhile, in the process of NIR monitoring in vivo, positive contrast imaging of fluorescence is constructed, which can accurately monitor ClO^- changes over time. The current dual-excitation fluorescence-based data calibration and/or comparison method improves the application of the traditional single-excitation ratio fluorescence strategy and provide innovative detection tools for accurate measurement of fluorescence detection, with detection/monitoring modes suitable for different physiological environments.

Luminescent Guests Encapsulated in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Portable Fluorescence Sensor and Visual Detection Applications: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have excellent applicability in several fields and have significant structural advantages, due to their open pore structure, high porosity, large specific surface area, and easily modifiable and functionalized porous surface. In addition, a variety of luminescent guest (LG) species can be encapsulated in the pores of MOFs, giving MOFs a broader luminescent capability. The applications of a variety of LG@MOF sensors, constructed by doping MOFs with LGs such as lanthanide ions, carbon quantum dots, luminescent complexes, organic dyes, and metal nanoclusters, for fluorescence detection of various target analyses such as ions, biomarkers, pesticides, and preservatives are systematically introduced in this review. The development of these sensors for portable visual fluorescence sensing applications is then covered. Finally, the challenges that these sectors currently face, as well as the potential for future growth, are briefly discussed.

3-Aminophenylboronic acid-functionalized molybdenum disulfide quantum dots for fluorescent determination of hypochlorite

A simple method is reported for hypochlorite determination based on fluorescence 3-aminophenylboronic acid-functionalized molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (B-MoS₂ QDs). B-MoS₂ QDs with strong fluorescence at 380 nm have been successfully synthesized by the amidation reaction between APBA and hydrothermal MoS₂ QDs. Hypochlorite sensing was proposed utilizing the fluorescent quenching effect of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine dihydrochloride (TMB) on B-MoS₂ QDs and the fast redox reaction between hypochlorite and TMB. The fluorescent quenching effect of TMB to B-MoS₂ QDs was proved to be caused by static dynamic quenching and inner filter effect. A good linear relationship was obtained in the hypochlorite concentration range from 1 to 20 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 36.8 nM. The proposed fluorescent detection assay was simple and fast, taking only 5 min at room temperature. Satisfactory results were obtained in the standard spike recovery tests on tap water and milk samples, which indicate high potential in constructing fluorescent bio-detection assays.
