Fully Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework Nanosheets for Visible-Light-Driven Organic Synthesis in Water

Covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets have recently garnered great attention as a new class of functional materials. As one of the sustainable processes, however, the photocatalytic organic synthesis in water has not been investigated using COF nanosheets as a photocatalyst to date. Herein, we reported the synthesis of a fully conjugated COF nanosheets with carboxyl functional group through a cooperative strategy of chemical exfoliation and group transformation. The new COF nanosheets was found to be an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for a wide range of organic synthesis including selective oxidation of sulfides and oxidative coupling of benzylamines in water under visible-light illumination. This work contributes a new roadmap for the design and synthesis of functional COF-based nanosheets, but also further extends the application boundary of the ultrathin COF nanosheets.

Catalytic Design of Matrix-Isolated Ni-Polymer Composites for Methane Catalytic Decomposition

Targeted synthesis of C/composite Ni-based material was carried out by the method of matrix isolation. The composite was formed with regard to the features of the reaction of catalytic decomposition of methane. The morphology and physicochemical properties of these materials have been characterized using a number of methods: elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (TPR-H₂), specific surface areas (SSA), thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). It was shown by FTIR spectroscopy that nickel ions are immobilized on the polymer molecule of polyvinyl alcohol, and during heat treatment, polycondensation sites are formed on the surface of the polymer molecule. By the method of Raman spectroscopy, it was shown that already at a temperature of 250 °C, a developed conjugation system with sp2-hybridized carbon atoms begins to form. The SSA method shows that the formation of the composite material resulted in a matrix with a developed specific surface area of 20 to 214 m²/g. The XRD method shows that nanoparticles are essentially characterized by Ni, NiO reflexes. The composite material was established by microscopy methods to be a layered structure with uniformly distributed nickel-containing particles 5-10 nm in size. The XPS method determined that metallic nickel was present on the surface of the material. A high specific activity was found in the process of catalytic decomposition of methane-from 0.9 to 1.4 g_H2/g_cat/h, X_CH4, from 33 to 45% at a reaction temperature of 750 °C without the stage of catalyst preliminary activation. During the reaction, the formation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes occurs.

CeO2/Ni-MOF with Synergistic Function of Enrichment and Activation: Efficient Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol Pollutant to 4-Aminophenol

The conversion of organic pollutants to value-added chemicals has been considered as a sustainable approach to solve environmental problems. However, it is still a challenge to construct a suitable heterogeneous catalyst that can synchronously achieve the enrichment and activation of organic pollutants (such as 4-nitrophenol, 4-NP). Here, an organic-inorganic hybrid catalyst (CeO₂/Ni-MOF) was successfully fabricated for efficiently reducing 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with water as the hydrogen source. Based on the synergistic effect of Ni-MOF (adsorption action) and CeO₂ (active sites), CeO₂/Ni-MOF could achieve a reaction rate of 1.102 μmol min^-1 mg^-1 with an ultrahigh Faraday efficiency (FE) (99.9%) and conversion (97.6%). In addition, the catalytic mechanism of 4-NP reduction over CeO₂/Ni-MOF was elaborated in depth. This work presents a new avenue for the effective reduction of pollutants and provides a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts for rare-earth metals.

Designed polymeric conjugation motivates tunable activation of molecular oxygen in heterogeneous organic photosynthesis

Photocatalytic oxidative organic reactions are important synthetic transformations, and research on reaction selectivity by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is significant. To date, however, there has rarely been any focus on the directed generation of ROSs. Herein, we report the first identification of tunable molecular oxygen activation induced by polymeric conjugation in nonmetallic conjugated microporous polymers (CMP). The conjugation between these can be achieved by the introduction of alkynyl groups. CMP-A with an alkynyl bridge facilitates the intramolecular charge mobility while CMP-D, lacking an alkynyl group enhances the photoexcited carrier build-up on the surface from diffusion. These different processes dominate the directed ROS generation of the superoxide radical (O₂^-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂), respectively. This theory is substantiated by the different performances of these CMPs in the aerobic oxidation of sulfides and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines, and could provide insight into the rational design of CMPs for various heterogeneous organic photosynthesis.
