Comprehensive assessment of biorefinery potential for biofuels production from macroalgal biomass: Towards a sustainable circular bioeconomy and greener future

Marine macroalgae have attracted significant interest as a viable resource for biofuel and value-added chemical production due to their abundant availability, low production costs, and high carbohydrate and lipid content. The growing awareness of socio-economic factors worldwide has led to a greater consideration of marine macroalgae as a sustainable source for biofuel production and the generation of valuable products. The integration of biorefinery techniques into biofuel production processes holds immense potential for fostering the development of a circular bioeconomy on a broad scale. Extensive research was focused on the technoeconomic and environmental impact analysis of biofuel production from macroalgal biomass. The integrated biorefinery processes offers valuable pathways for the practical implementation of macroalgae in diverse conversion technologies. These studies provided crucial insights into the large-scale industrial production of biofuels and associated by-products. This review explores the utilization of marine macroalgal biomass for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. It examines the application of assessment tools for evaluating the sustainability of biorefinery processes, including process integration and optimization, life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, socio-economic analysis, and multi-criteria decision analysis. The review also discusses the limitations, bottlenecks, challenges, and future perspectives associated with utilizing macroalgal biomass for the production of biofuels and value-added chemicals.

Supply chain and environmental assessment of the essential oil production using Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) as raw material

Biomass has been considered a potential source of value-added products and energy vectors. Most biomass studies have researched the best pathways or processes to upgrade this renewable raw material through stand-alone processes or biorefineries. The biomass supply chain is a crucial aspect in the economic analysis of biomass upgrading since most of the raw materials need to be transported. A supply chain analysis gives an idea about the availability, real costs, and storage conditions of the raw material to guarantee an accurate feasibility analysis and a standardized production process. Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) is an aromatic plant used to produce valuable extracts in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Nevertheless, high amounts of exhausted biomass (more than 95% w/w) are produced and wasted. Theseresidues represent an environmental issue to be solved through the implementation of valorizing options. This paper analyses the supply chain and environmental impact of essential oil production using Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) as a raw material in the Colombian context. The case study comprises a single-objective optimization of the calendula supply chain to produce essential oil and the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the process through a cradle-to-gate approach in the Colombian context. The results showed the best locations to upgrade Calendula in Colombia (i.e., Manizales and Bucaramanga), supplying 1.1 % of the total product demand. The optimal product flow to customers was 0.32 tons/year, and the required feedstock from suppliers was 162 tons/year. The agricultural stage of essential oil production represented the highest environmental impact of the supply chain. In particular, plastic sheets, organic fertilizers, and chemical fungicides were the main contributors to this impact.

A systematic quality assessment of Environmental Impact Statements in the oil and gas industry

The global economy relies heavily on oil and gas resources. However, hydrocarbon exploitation projects can cause significant impacts on the environment. But despite the production of numerous Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) to identify/mitigate such impacts, no study has specifically assessed the quality of EISs for both onshore and offshore oil and gas projects, with tested hypotheses. To address this research gap, our paper, for the first time, develops a modified Lee and Colley evaluation model to assess the quality of 19 sampled oil and gas project EISs produced from 1998 to 2008 in Nigeria. Our findings show that Project Description and Communication of Results are the main areas of strength. However, Environmental Impact Prediction, and Project Decommissioning, were among the key areas requiring attention. A key finding, though, is that Mann-Whitney tests suggest that there is no evidence that the quality of EISs for the latter period (2004-2008) is higher than that of the earlier period (1998-2004). We suggest that periodic systematic review of the quality of submitted/approved EISs (c. every 3-5years) should be established to monitor trends in EIS quality and identify strong and weak areas. This would help to drive continual improvement in both the EIA processes and the resultant EISs of technical engineering projects. Such reviews have the potential to illuminate some of the underlying problems of, and solutions to, oil and gas exploration, production and transportation, and their related environmental impacts. This suggested change would also be useful internationally, including for the burgeoning exploration and production of unconventional hydrocarbon resources.

Noble metal, oxide and chalcogenide-based nanomaterials from scalable phototrophic culture systems

Phototrophic cell or tissue cultures can produce nanostructured noble metals, oxides and chalcogenides at ambient temperatures and pressures in an aqueous environment and without the need for potentially toxic solvents or the generation of dangerous waste products. These "green" synthesized nanobiomaterials can be used to fabricate biosensors and bio-reporting tools, theranostic vehicles, medical imaging agents, as well as tissue engineering scaffolds and biomaterials. While successful at the lab and experimental scales, significant barriers still inhibit the development of higher capacity processes. While scalability issues in traditional algal bioprocess engineering are well known, such as the controlled delivery of photons and gas-exchange, the large-scale algal synthesis of nanomaterials introduces additional parameters to be understood, i.e., nanoparticle (NP) formation kinetics and mechanisms, biological transport of metal cations and the effect of environmental conditions on the final form of the NPs. Only after a clear understanding of the kinetics and mechanisms can the strain selection, photobioreactor type, medium pH and ionic strength, mean light intensity and other relevant parameters be specified for an optimal bioprocess. To this end, this mini-review will examine the current best practices and understanding of these phenomena to establish a path forward for this technology.
