Heavy metal bioaccumulation in two passerines with differing migration strategies

Trace metal transfer to passerines inhabiting wastewater treatment wetlands

Wastewater treatment wetlands are cost-effective strategies for remediating trace metals in industrial effluent. However, biogeochemical exchange between wastewater treatment wetlands and adjacent environments provides opportunities for trace metals to cycle in surrounding ecosystems. The transfer of trace metals to wildlife inhabiting treatment wetlands must be considered when evaluating wetland success. Using passerine birds as bioindicators, we conducted a multi-tissue analysis to investigate the mobilization of zinc, copper, and lead derived from wastewater to terrestrial wildlife in treatment wetlands and surrounding habitat. In addition, we evaluate the strength of relationships between metal concentrations in non-lethal (blood and feathers) and lethal (muscle and liver) sample types for estimation of toxicity risk. From July 2020 to August 2021, 177 passerines of seven species were captured at two wetlands constructed to treat industrial wastewater and two reference wetlands in the coastal plain of South Carolina. Feather, blood, liver, and muscle samples from each bird were analyzed for fourteen metals using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and direct mercury analysis. Passerines inhabiting wastewater treatment wetlands accumulated higher concentrations of zinc in liver, copper in blood, and lead in feathers than passerines in reference wetlands, but neither blood nor feather concentrations were correlated with internal tissue concentrations. Of all the detected metals, only mercury in the blood showed a strong predictive relationship with mercury in internal tissues. This study indicates that trace metals derived from wastewater are bioavailable and exported to terrestrial wildlife and that passerine biomonitoring is a valuable tool for assessing metal transfer from treatment wetlands. Regular blood sampling can reveal proximate trace metal exposure but cannot predict internal body burdens for most metals.

Variability in methylmercury exposure across migratory terrestrial bird species: Influencing factors, biomagnification and potential risks

Despite China's considerable mercury (Hg) emissions, monitoring of methylmercury (MeHg) levels in its terrestrial environments remains limited. This study examined the occurrence and accumulation of MeHg in body feathers of 12 migratory terrestrial bird species originating from Siberia and northeastern China. Considerable variations in foraging habits and MeHg levels were observed among these species. Accipiters, including Eurasian and Japanese sparrowhawks (A. gularis and A. nisus) and northern goshawk (A. gentilis), along with insectivorous songbirds including grey-backed thrush (T. hortulorum) and orange-flanked bluetail (T. cyanurus), showed notable levels of MeHg (0.62-1.20 mg/kg). Up to 25 % of the individuals within these species were classified as low-risk based on feather Hg toxicity thresholds, while the remaining species fell into the no-risk category. Despite showing enriched δ15N, MeHg concentrations in short-eared and long-eared owls (A. flammeus and A. otus) were lower than in sparrowhawks. The herbivorous oriental turtle dove (S. orientalis) exhibited significantly lower MeHg levels compared to all other species. There was a significant positive correlation between MeHg concentrations and δ15N across species, highlighting the substantial biomagnification potential of MeHg within the terrestrial food web. Additionally, we found significantly higher MeHg levels in adults than juveniles in both sparrowhawk species. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing migratory bird feathers for monitoring terrestrial Hg contamination, and underscore the importance of further assessment.

Bioaccumulation of contaminants in Scarabaeidae and Silphidae beetles at sites polluted by coal combustion residuals and radiocesium

Anthropogenic contamination from coal-fired power plants and nuclear reactors is a pervasive issue impacting ecosystems across the globe. As a result, it is critical that studies continue to assess the accumulation and effects of trace elements and radionuclides in a diversity of biota. In particular, bioindicator species are a powerful tool for risk assessment of chemically contaminated habitats. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and auto-gamma counting, we analyzed trace element and radiocesium contaminant concentrations in Scarabaeidae and Silphidae beetles (Order: Coleoptera), important taxa in decomposition and nutrient cycling, at contaminated and reference sites on the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, U.S. Our results revealed variability in trace element concentrations between Scarabaeidae and Silphidae beetles at uncontaminated and contaminated sites. Compared to Scarabaeidae, Silphidae had higher levels of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). Unexpectedly, concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Ni were higher in both taxa at the uncontaminated sites. Scarabaeidae and Silphidae beetles at the coal combustion waste site consistently had high concentrations of arsenic (As), and Scarabaeidae had high concentrations of selenium (Se). Of the 50 beetles analyzed for radiocesium levels, two had elevated radioactivity concentrations, both of which were from a site contaminated with radionuclides. Our results suggest carrion beetles may be particularly sensitive to bioaccumulation of contaminants due to their trophic position and role in decomposition, and thus are useful sentinels of trace element and radionuclide contamination.

Tissue distribution and association of heavy metal accumulation in a free-living resident passerine bird tree sparrow Passer montanus

Passerine birds have been increasingly used as effective sentinels of ecosystem contamination. They can provide direct evidence of the bioavailability and accumulation of heavy metal elements in the environment. In this study, the bioaccumulation of four heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) and Ca in different organs and tissues (feathers, internal organs, skeletons, and muscles) of an urban bird, tree sparrow (Passer montanus), collected from a polluted site [Baiyin (BY)] and a relatively unpolluted site [Liujiaxia (LJX)], and their associations were investigated. There were significantly higher and lower concentrations of heavy metals and Ca, respectively, in different organs and tissues of sparrows in BY than those in LJX. However, except for Pb, the heavy metal levels were below the threshold of sublethal effects. Age-dependent variations in metals were quantified, and it was found that adult bird contained higher concentration of different organs and tissue metals, except for feathers, compared with nestlings and juveniles. The tissue distribution of heavy metals in sparrows of different ages and sex was similar in the two study sites, and heavy metal elements were mainly accumulated in the feathers. This study further investigated the correlation between heavy metals in different organs and tissues and found that the correlations between them were strong in nestlings and adults but weak in juveniles. In addition, Pb and Cd in internal organs, skeletons, and muscles of young sparrows can be estimated using feathers, whereas Cu and Zn were found in adult sparrows. Altogether, our results suggest that tree sparrows will serve as valuable biomonitors of environmental heavy metal pollution and will underscore the importance of tissue types in avian ecotoxicology field studies.

Total and methylmercury concentrations in nocturnal migratory birds passing through Mount Ailao, Southwest China

Despite growing concerns over mercury (Hg) accumulation in birds in recent decades, little is known about Hg exposure in nocturnal migratory birds. Here, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were detected in the feathers of nocturnal migratory birds (n = 286, belonging to 46 species) passing through Mount Ailao in Southwest China. The stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) were also determined to clarify the effects of trophic position, foraging guild, and foraging behavior on Hg bioaccumulation. Our results show that the THg and MeHg concentrations varied by two orders of magnitude among all nocturnal migratory birds investigated, with the lowest values (THg: 0.056 mg kg^-1; MeHg: 0.038 mg kg^-1) in the Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus) and the highest (THg: 12 mg kg^-1; MeHg: 7.8 mg kg^-1) in the hair-crested drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus). Waterbirds showed higher δ¹⁵N values and higher THg and MeHg concentrations than songbirds, and the Hg concentrations in piscivorous species were significantly higher than those in herbivores, omnivores, and insectivores. Significant effects of foraging guilds (Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) and foraging behaviors (Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) on the Hg concentrations in migratory bird feathers were detected. A risk assessment indicated that approximately 7.0% of individuals were at moderate (2.4-5.0 mg kg^-1) to high (>5.0 mg kg^-1) risk of Hg exposure, and were therefore vulnerable to adverse physiological and behavioral effects. A long-term monitoring campaign during the migratory period is highly recommended to better understand the bioaccumulation of Hg in these nocturnal migratory bird populations over time.

Impact of Heavy Metal Toxicity on the Gut Microbiota and Its Relationship with Metabolites and Future Probiotics Strategy: a Review

The gut microbiota has a vital role in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Several studies have revealed that environmental exposure to pollutants such as heavy metals may contribute to the progression of extensive list of diseases which may further lead to perturbations in the gut leading to dysbiosis. This manuscript critically reviews the alterations in the gut microbiota composition and function upon exposure to various toxic heavy metals prevalent in the environment. The disturbance in gut microbial ecology also affects the microbial metabolic profile which may alter the speciation state and bioavailability heavy metals thus affecting metal uptake-absorption/detoxification mechanisms associated to heavy metal metabolism. The toxic effects of various heavy metals either in single or in multimetallic combination and the gut microbiota associated host health and disease condition need a comprehensive assessment with important consideration for therapeutic and protective strategies against the damage to gut microbiota.

Multiple trace elements exposure of Grey-cheeked Fulvettas Alcippe morrisonia, a nuclear member in bird mixed-species flocks, and implications for bioindicator

Birds are vulnerable to metal pollution, which can serve as indicators of environmental safety monitoring. In this study, we evaluated three non-essential (Pb, Cd, and As) and two essential (Cu and Zn) trace elements of living (only feathers) and deceased (feathers and tissues) Grey-cheeked Fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia) at a highly polluted mine tailings and a reference site. Five metal concentrations in the feathers of living Grey-cheeked Fulvettas were higher at the mine site. Among these, the levels of Cd and Pb in most feathers exceeded the threshold, resulting in an ecotoxicological concern. The correlation analysis suggested that feathers from Grey-cheeked Fulvettas might be useful bioindicators for local metal contamination assessment. The toxicological effects of trace metals on Grey-cheeked Fulvetta might affect its leadership ability. Therefore, understanding the effects of metal pollution on Grey-cheeked Fulvetta would show important practical implications for the conservation of bird communities.

Atmospheric pollution assessment using polar graphs and its relationship with the bird community from the Sierra de Guadalupe, Mexico (initial data)

One of the most populated areas of the world is the Metropolitan Zone of the Mexican Valley, which has serious atmospheric pollution problems. To the north of the Metropolitan Zone is the Protected Natural Area Sierra de Guadalupe (PNASG), an area with a high diversity of birds, close to an industrial zone, and poor air quality (AQ). It is known that a poor AQ affects biodiversity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the AQ using O₃, CO, NO₂, PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 polar graphics atmospheric pollutants (PGAP) and the Integrated Air Quality Index (IAQI) to examine its relationship with the structural diversity (SD) and the functional diversity (FD) of the bird community of the PNASG. In autumn-2019 and winter-2020, bird surveys and the PGAP with the pollutant concentrations were performed using data from Mexico City air quality network. The IAQI, SD and FD were estimated. Autumn-2019 registered the worst IAQI (334), the lowest wind speed (1.5 m/s), and the highest PGAP values (90). These worst AQ and the highest PGAP values were outside the PNASG but into a green urban area. This site also showed the highest SD scores (87), reflecting that the green urban areas function as a refuge for birds. The study sites with the best AQ (130.37), the lowest PGAP values (0.1) and the highest FD (0.7) were inside the PNASG. We conclude that a poor AQ minimizes the FD and that the PNASG is an essential buffer and a biological conservation area. The combined use of an integrated index of air quality with the polar graphics and diversity of birds (SD and FD) allow a better interpretation of air quality. It is necessary to establish mechanisms ensuring the conservation of the protected natural areas and green urban areas to improve air quality and biodiversity conservation.

Factors influencing lead, mercury and other trace element exposure in birds from metal mining areas

Non-ferrous metal mining is considered one of the largest sources of toxic metal released to the environment and may threaten ecosystems, notably biota. We explored how birds that inhabit non-ferrous metal mining sites are exposed to mercury, lead, and other trace elements by analyzing their feathers and verifying which factors may influence element concentrations in feathers. We sampled a total of 168 birds, representing 26 species, with different feeding habits and migration patterns in a non-polluted reference site and two historical metal mining areas: Almadén, which is considered one of the most heavily mercury-contaminated sites worldwide, and the Sierra Madrona mountains where lead has been mined since ancient times. The quantification of aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), thorium (Th), thallium (Tl), uranium (U), vanadium (V) and zinc (Zn) was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Feather analysis revealed contamination by Hg and Pb, in Almadén and Sierra Madrona, respectively. We found that granivorous birds had the lowest feather Hg levels compared to those found in omnivorous, insectivorous, and piscivorous species, whereas feather Pb was about twice as high in granivores and omnivores, than in insectivorous and piscivorous birds. We also found differences among study sites in 13 elements and confirmed the influence of feather age, migratory patterns of the birds, and external deposition of elements, on metal concentrations in the feathers. Our results highlight that despite the cessation of metal mining in the study areas, local avifauna are being exposed to Hg and Pb from abandoned mines and old tailings sites, indicating that appropriate measures are needed to protect biota from overexposure to these toxic metals.

Feather mercury concentrations in omnivorous and granivorous terrestrial songbirds in Southeast Michigan

Sublethal exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) can have consequences for the reproductive, neurological, and physiological health of birds. Songbirds, regardless of trophic position, are often exposed to mercury (Hg) and may be at risk for health effects - especially if they inhabit a place that is subject to high Hg atmospheric deposition and/or have local conditions that are prone to methylation. This study investigates Hg concentrations in terrestrial songbirds of Southeast Michigan, where historical and present-day anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals are elevated. We collected tail feather samples from 223 songbirds across four different species during summer and fall of 2018 and 2019. The mean (±SE) Hg concentration across all samples was 103 ± 3.43 ng/g of dry feather weight. Mercury concentration varied significantly among species, and by age and site in some species, but not by sex. Mean concentrations were nearly seven times higher in two omnivore species, American robin (Turdus migratorius) and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), than in the two granivore species, American goldfinch (Spinus tristus) and house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Juveniles had higher feather Hg concentrations than adults in all species except American goldfinches - which feed their young primarily seeds, further supporting a role of diet in exposure. We also found a negative correlation between Hg concentration and body condition in American robins, but further research is needed to verify this relationship. While our sample concentrations do not exceed the threshold for sublethal effects, our findings provide insight into the patterns of Hg concentrations in terrestrial songbirds, which may help in understanding Hg exposure pathways, bioaccumulation and risks in terrestrial species.

Rapid and efficient reduction of chromate by novel Pd/Fe@biomass derived from Enterococcus faecalis

Efficient reduction of chromate is highly desirable for its detoxification and remediation of the contaminated environment. This study described a fusion of the concepts of precious metal biorecovery and fabrication of Pd/Fe@biomass derived from simulated wastewater. The effectiveness of Pd/Fe@biomass during reduction process of Cr(VI) was evaluated by comparing with pure nZVI, E. faecalis and Pd@biomass. Results showed that Pd(II) could be recovered by E. faecalis with Fe(II) as the electron donor, and precipitation could yield nZVI anchored onto Pd-loaded E. faecalis. The nano particles (NPs) on Pd/Fe@biomass were well-dispersed, which provided 2.70 folds specific surface area comparing with nZVI. Efficient Cr(VI) reduction could be achieved at a higher catalyst dosage, the most appropriated Pd/Fe molar ratio of 2% and a wide pH range. Typically, 0.5 mM Cr(VI) could be completely reduced in 5 min driven by Pd/Fe@biomass under the conditions of dosage of 1.0 g/L and pH 3. Moreover, the mechanisms of Cr(VI) reduction by Pd/Fe@biomass were proposed, which intimately related to nZVI electron donating capacities, Pd catalysis for hydrogenation and galvanic cell effects between Fe and Pd. Therefore, Pd/Fe@biomass could be an alternative for rapid and complete reduction of Cr(VI).

The Use of Intrinsic Markers for Studying the Migratory Movements of Bats

Mortality of migratory bat species at wind energy facilities is a well-documented phenomenon, and mitigation and management are partially constrained by the current limited knowledge of bat migratory movements. Analyses of biochemical signatures in bat tissues ("intrinsic markers") can provide information about the migratory origins of individual bats. Many tissue samples for intrinsic marker analysis may be collected from living and dead bats, including carcasses collected at wind energy facilities. In this paper, we review the full suite of available intrinsic marker analysis techniques that may be used to study bat migration, with the goal of summarizing the current literature and highlighting knowledge gaps and opportunities. We discuss applications of the stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur; radiogenic strontium isotopes; trace elements and contaminants; and the combination of these markers with each other and with other extrinsic markers. We further discuss the tissue types that may be analyzed for each and provide a synthesis of the generalized workflow required to link bats to origins using intrinsic markers. While stable hydrogen isotope techniques have clearly been the leading approach to infer migratory bat movement patterns across the landscape, here we emphasize a variety of lesser used intrinsic markers (i.e., strontium, trace elements, contaminants) that may address new study areas or answer novel research questions.

Simultaneous detection of mercury (II), lead (II) and silver (I) based on fluorescently labelled aptamer probes and graphene oxide

We have developed a fluorescence quantitative analysis method for the simultaneous detection of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Ag⁺ based on fluorescently labelled nucleic acid aptamer probes and graphene oxide (GO). By this method, three nucleic acid aptamer probes (P_Hg, P_Pb, P_Ag) were designed. The carboxyl fluorescein (FAM), tetramethyl-6-carboxyrhodamine (TAMRA) and cyanine-5 (Cy-5) were respectively selected as fluorophore of aptamer probes, and GO was chosen as quencher. In general, these probes were on free single-stranded state and adsorbed on the surface of GO via π-π interactions, which brought fluorophores of probes and GO into close proximity. Due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer occurred between fluorophores and GO, the fluorescence was quenched and fluorescence signals were all weak. Under the optimal condition, fluorescence intensities of three fluorophores exhibited a good linear dependence on corresponding ions concentration. The detection limit for Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Ag⁺ were 0.2, 0.5 and 2 nmol/L (3σ, n = 11). Average recoveries of this method were 97.56-104.92%, which indicated the method had a high accuracy and low detection limit. In addition, this proposed method has good selectivity, and there was no crosstalk effect among these probes.

Standardized experimental model for cement dust exposure; tissue heavy metal bioaccumulation and pulmonary pathological changes in rats

A controlled experimental model of exposure to aerosols particularly for cement dust was recently invented in a study from the laboratory that found high serum levels of heavy metals, decrease gastrointestinal motility, and altered hematological variables in cement dust exposed rats. However, reproducibility was not considered. This work aims at standardizing the model and investigating preliminary toxicological indicators. Thirty male rats used in this study were divided into 3 groups (n = 10). Group 1; control, while groups 2 and 3 were exposed to cement dust for 14 days and 28 days respectively. We assessed clinical signs of toxicity, tissue heavy metal concentration, histopathological, and body weight (BW) changes. We observed poor movement coordination, abnormal posture, cephalic fur loss. Evidence of ischemia and fibrotic pneumoconiosis were grossly observed in the lungs of the exposed groups. There was a significant increase in tissue level of heavy metals with pulmonary and gastric heavy metal content showing a trendy relationship during the period of the exposure as the value of Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, Iron, Calcium, and Nickel increased by nearly similar percentages in both tissues. Organs weights increased; the 14-day exposed (198 ± 31; 168 ± 22) and 28-day exposed (198 ± 22; 187 ± 26) groups had significantly reduced body weight at the first and second weeks of exposure compared to the control group (265 ± 26; 357 ± 40) respectively. Exposure to cement dust induced low bone density in the exposed rats (p < 0.05). Histopathological alterations include necrosis, inflammatory cellular infiltration, and alveolar hyperplasia suggestive of the proliferative response of pulmonary tissue to the dust. The operation of the standardized apparatus mimics a typical occupational exposure and the findings show that cement dust induces systemic toxicity via respiratory perturbation and body/organ weight discordance mediated by heavy metal bioaccumulation.

Trace elements fingerprint of feathers differs between breeding and non-breeding areas in an Afro-Palearctic migratory bird, the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica)

Trace elements are widespread contaminants that can potentially threaten ecosystems and human health. Considering their distribution and toxicity, monitoring their presence in animals represents a priority in environmental risk assessment. Migratory birds have been suggested to be useful biomonitors for trace elements because they can provide information on contaminants even from remote areas that they may exploit during their life cycle. The aim of this study was to analyse the contamination fingerprint of trace elements of African non-breeding staging grounds and European breeding areas in a long-distance migratory passerine bird, the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). We collected feathers grown in the African non-breeding grounds and those grown in the breeding areas of Northern Italy and measured the levels of 12 trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn) by DRC-ICP-MS. Multivariate analysis showed that elemental profiles of feathers grown in African non-breeding areas and in the Italian breeding ones clearly differed, with feathers grown in Africa showing higher concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni, but lower concentrations of As, Se and Zn, compared to those grown in Italy. In addition, levels of trace elements were age-dependent, with higher levels in older individuals than in younger ones. Our results add to the growing evidence that feathers of long-distance migratory birds are useful tools to monitor trace elements contamination profiles across continents.

Interspecific variation in the spatially-explicit risks of trace metals to songbirds

Many wild animals can be adversely affected by trace metals around point sources but little is known about the risks to birds across their ranges. Trace metals in the soil are ubiquitously, if heterogeneously distributed, across the world due to natural and anthropogenic sources. Here, we built, parameterized and applied a spatially explicit modelling framework to determine the risks of soil-associated metals to 30 invertebrate-consuming passerine species across their spatial distribution in England and Wales. The model uses a risk characterization approach to assess the risks of soil-associated metals. Various monitoring datasets were used as input parameters: soil metal concentrations in England and Wales, bird spatial distribution; bird diet, bioaccumulation and toxicity data were extracted from the literature. Our model highlights significant differences in toxicity risks from Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn across the UK distributions of different species; Pb and Zn posed risks to all species across most of species' distributions, with more localised risks to some species of conservation concern from Cd and Cu. No single taxa of invertebrate prey drove avian exposure to metal toxicity. Adults were found to be at higher risk from Pb and Zn toxicity across their distributions than nestlings. This risk was partially driven by diet, with age differences in diets identified. Our spatially explicit model allowed us to identify areas of each species' national distribution in which the population was at risk. Overall, we determined that for all species studied an average of 32.7 ± 0.2%, 8.0 ± 0.1%, 86.1 ± 0.1% and 93.2 ± 0.1% of the songbird spatial distributions in the UK were characterized at risk of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively. Despite some limitations, our spatially explicit model helps in understanding the risks of metals to wildlife and provides an efficient method of prioritising areas, contaminants and species for environmental risk assessments. The model could be further evaluated using a targeted monitoring dataset of metal concentration in bird tissues. Our model can assess and communicate to stakeholders the potential risks of environmental contaminants to wildlife species at a national and potentially international scale.

Heavy Metal Mixture Exposure and Effects in Developing Nations: An Update

The drive for development and modernization has come at great cost. Various human activities in developed and developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have given rise to environmental safety concerns. Increased artisanal mining activities, illegal refining, use of leaded petrol, airborne dust, arbitrary discarding and burning of toxic waste, absorption of production industries in inhabited areas, inadequate environmental legislation, and weak implementation of policies, have given rise to the incomparable contamination and pollution associated with heavy metals in recent decades. This review evaluates the public health effects of heavy metals and their mixtures in SSA. This shows the extent and size of the problem posed by exposure to heavy metal mixtures in regard to public health.

Surface water filtration using granular media and membranes: A review

Significant growth of the human population is expected in the future. Hence, the pressure on the already scarce natural water resources is continuously increasing. This work is an overview of membrane and filtration methods for the removal of pollutants such as bacteria, viruses and heavy metals from surface water. Microfiltration/Ultrafiltration (MF/UF) can be highly effective in eliminating bacteria and/or act as pre-treatment before Nanofiltration/Reverse Osmosis (NF/RO) to reduce the possibility of fouling. However, MF/UF membranes are produced through relatively intensive procedures. Moreover, they can be modified with chemical additives to improve their performance. Therefore, MF/UF applicability in less developed countries can be limited. NF shows high removal capability of certain contaminants (e.g. pharmaceutically active compounds and ionic compounds). RO is necessary for desalination purposes in areas where sea water is used for drinking/sanitation. Nevertheless, NF/RO systems require pre-treatment of the influent, increased electrical supply and high level of technical expertise. Thus, they are often a highly costly addition for countries under development. Slow Sand Filtration (SSF) is a simple and easy-to-operate process for the retention of solids, microorganisms and heavy metals; land use is a limiting factor, though. Rapid Sand Filtration (RSF) is an alternative responding to the need for optimized land use. However, it requires prior and post treatment stages to prevent fouling. Especially after coating with metal-based additives, sand filtration can constitute an efficient and sustainable treatment option for developing countries. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorbs organic compounds that were not filtered in previous treatment stages. It can be used in conjunction with other methods (e.g. MF and SSF) to face pollution that results from potentially outdated water network (especially in less developed areas) and, hence, produce water of acceptable drinking quality. Future research can focus on the potential of GAC production from alternative sources (e.g. municipal waste). Given the high production/operation/maintenance cost of the NF/RO systems, more cost-effective but equally effective alternatives can be implemented: e.g. (electro)coagulation/flocculation followed by MF/UF, SSF before/after MF/UF, MF/UF before GAC.

The systemic toxicity of heavy metal mixtures in rats

To explore the health effects of multi-heavy metal exposure, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were orally given one dose of heavy metal mixtures (HMMs). The eight most common detectable heavy metals in Ningbo area are zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg). In this study, mixtures of these eight heavy metals were prepared using the compounds zinc sulfate heptahydrate, cupric sulfate, manganese dichloride, potassium dichromate, nickel dichloride, cadmium dichloride, lead acetate, and methyl mercury chloride with ion mass proportions of 1070.0, 312.6, 173.1, 82.6, 30.0, 13.3, 6.6, and 1.0, respectively. The rats were randomly divided into four groups. Beside the control group, each rat received a corresponding dose of HMMs 215, 464 or 1000 mg per kg body weight (bwt), respectively. The rats were observed for 4 weeks. During the last week of observation, the Morris water maze test was used to investigate spatial learning and memory in the treated rats. The rats were exsanguinated under complete chloral hydrate anesthesia and organ coefficients were measured. Biochemical tests of blood and serum samples were carried out. The results showed abnormalities in the hematological system, decreased renal function, hepatic injury and disturbances in the electrolyte balance of the rats treated with a high dose of HMMs. Death of some rats was also observed. This paper analyzed how a one-time high dose oral administration of HMMs induced systemic toxicity.

Brominated flame retardants and toxic elements in the meat and liver of red deer (Cervus elaphus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and moose (Alces alces) from Latvian wildlife

In order to evaluate the contamination status of terrestrial biota in Latvia, muscle and liver tissues of red deer (Cervus elaphus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and moose (Alces alces) were analyzed for the content of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), as well as cadmium and lead. The highest mean concentrations of PBDEs (46.6pgg^-1 wet weight (w.w.)), cadmium (0.95mgkg^-1 w.w.), and lead (0.22mgkg^-1 w.w.) were observed in the tissues of moose, while the wild boar samples contained the highest levels of HBCD, with the mean concentration equal to 264pgg^-1 w.w. in muscle tissues. Generally low mean concentrations of TBBPA from 0.52 to 4.54pgg^-1 w.w. were observed. The liver tissue of all analyzed specimens was found to contain higher concentrations of contaminants, compared to muscle tissue. The congener profile of PBDEs in the analyzed tissues indicated that the recently used "penta-BDE" formulation was a probable source, while components of HBCD, "octa-BDE", and "deca-BDE" technical mixtures are likely to undergo congener-specific or diastereomer-specific bioaccumulation or metabolic degradation. Considering the reports from other regions, it can be concluded that the terrestrial biota in Latvia is less affected by the studied contaminants.

Arsenic concentrations and speciation in wild birds from an abandoned realgar mine in China

Birds are at a higher level in the food chain; however, the potential bioaccumulation and biotransformation of arsenic (As) in birds in As mines has rarely been studied. In this study, four passerine bird species (tree sparrow [Passer montanus], light-vented bulbul [Pycnonotus sinensis], Garrulax canorus [Leucodioptron canorus], and magpie [Pica pica]) were collected from an abandoned As mine in China. The highest recorded As concentrations were 4.95 mg/kg and 51.65 mg/kg in muscles and feathers, respectively. Detection using high-performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) revealed six As species, including arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), arsenobetaine (AsB) and arsenocholine (AsC), with the former three species as the dominant (>92%) and the latter three as the minor As species (<6.17%). Further analysis of the selected bird samples using the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) technique revealed the existence of As(III)-tris-glutathione (As(III)-GSH), which can be regarded as equivalent to the non-extractable and unidentified As form in the HPLC-ICP-MS data. Both methods revealed similar patterns of As species in the birds from the As mine, with muscles containing mainly inorganic As and DMA and feathers containing mainly inorganic As. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge regarding As accumulation and speciation in terrestrial organisms.
