Sensitivities of ozone to its precursors during heavy ozone pollution events in the Yangtze River Delta using the adjoint method. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 925:171585. [PMID: 38462008 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.171585] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/07/2023] [Revised: 03/06/2024] [Accepted: 03/06/2024] [Indexed: 03/12/2024]
Abstract
Although the concentrations of five basic ambient air pollutants in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) have been reduced since the implementation of the "Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan" in 2013, the ozone concentrations still increase. In order to explore the causes of ozone pollution in YRD, we use the GEOS-Chem and its adjoint model to study the sensitivities of ozone to its precursor emissions from different source regions and emission sectors during heavy ozone pollution events under typical circulation patterns. The Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC) of Tsinghua University and 0.25° × 0.3125° nested grids are adopted in the model. By using the T-mode principal component analysis (T-PCA), the circulation patterns of heavy ozone pollution days (observed MDA8 O3 concentrations ≥160 μg m-3) in Nanjing located in the center area of YRD from 2013 to 2019 are divided into four types, with the main features of Siberian Low, Lake Balkhash High, Northeast China Low, Yellow Sea High, and southeast wind at the surface. The adjoint results show that the contributions of emissions emitted from Jiangsu and Zhejiang are the largest to heavy ozone pollution in Nanjing. The 10 % reduction of anthropogenic NOx and NMVOCs emissions in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai could reduce the ozone concentrations in Nanjing by up to 3.40 μg m-3 and 0.96 μg m-3, respectively. However, the reduction of local NMVOCs emissions has little effect on ozone concentrations in Nanjing, and the reduction of local NOx emissions would even increase ozone pollution. For different emissions sectors, industry emissions account for 31 %-74 % of ozone pollution in Nanjing, followed by transportation emissions (18 %-49 %). This study could provide the scientific basis for forecasting ozone pollution events and formulating accurate strategies of emission reduction.

Comparison of the ozone formation mechanisms and VOCs apportionment in different ozone pollution episodes in urban Beijing in 2019 and 2020: Insights for ozone pollution control strategies. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 908:168332. Abstract
Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution has been a tough issue in urban areas of China in the past decade. Clarifying the formation mechanisms of O3 and the sources of its precursors is necessary for the effective prevention of O3 pollution. In this study, a comparative analysis of O3 formation mechanisms and VOCs apportionment for five O3 pollution episodes was carried out at two urban sites (CRAES and CGZ) in Beijing in 2019 and 2020 by applying an observation-based modeling approach in order to obtain insights into O3 pollution control strategies. Results indicated that O3 pollution levels were generally more severe in 2019 than in 2020 during the observation periods. O3 formation at the two sites was both VOCs-limited on O3 polluted days and non-O3 polluted days. Stronger atmospheric oxidation capacity and ROx radicals cycling processes were found on O3 polluted days which could accelerate the local production of O3, and local photochemical production dominated the observed O3 concentrations at the two sites even on non-O3 polluted days. Emission reduction of VOCs should be a priority for mitigating O3 pollution, and alkenes and biogenic VOCs was the priority species at the CRAES and CGZ sites, respectively. Additionally, the reduction of oxygenated VOCs should also be important for the ozone control. Gasoline exhaust at the CRAES site, and solvent utilization and fuel evaporation at the CGZ site were main anthropogenic sources of VOCs. Therefore, local control measures should be further strengthened and differentiated control strategies of VOCs in the aspects of area, time, sources and species should be adopted in urban Beijing in the future. Overall, the findings of this study could provide a scientific understanding of the causes of O3 pollution and significant guidelines for formulating O3 control strategies from the perspective of different ozone pollution episodes in urban Beijing.

Contrasting effects of clean air actions on surface ozone concentrations in different regions over Beijing from May to September 2013-2020. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 903:166182. [PMID: 37562614 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.166182] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/12/2023] [Revised: 08/06/2023] [Accepted: 08/07/2023] [Indexed: 08/12/2023]
Abstract
Due to the nonlinear impacts of meteorology and precursors, the response of ozone (O3) trends to emission changes is very complex over different regions in megacity Beijing. Based on long-term in-situ observations at 35 air quality sites (four categories, i.e., urban, traffic, northern suburban and southern suburban sites) and satellite data, spatiotemporal variability of O3, gaseous precursors, and O3-VOCs-NOx sensitivity were explored through multiple metrics during the warm season from 2013 to 2020. Additionally, the contribution of meteorology and emissions to O3 was separated by a machine-learning-based de-weathered method. The annual averaged MDA8 O3 and O3 increased by 3.7 and 2.9 μg/m3/yr, respectively, with the highest at traffic sites and the lowest in northern suburb, and the rate of Ox (O3 + NO2) was 0.2 μg/m3/yr with the highest in southern suburb, although NO2 declined strongly and HCHO decreased slightly. However, the increment of O3 and Ox in the daytime exhibited decreasing trends to some extent. Additionally, NOx abatements weakened O3 loss through less NO titration, which drove narrowing differences in urban-suburban O3 and Ox. Due to larger decrease of NO2 in urban region and HCHO in northern suburb, the extent of VOCs-limited regime fluctuated over Beijing and northern suburb gradually shifted to transition or NOx-limited regime. Compared with the directly observed trends, the increasing rate of de-weathered O3 was lower, which was attributed to favorable meteorological conditions for O3 generation after 2017, especially in June (the most polluted month); whereas the de-weathered Ox declined except in southern suburb. Overall, clean air actions were effective in reducing the atmospheric oxidation capacity in urban and northern suburban regions, weakening local photochemical production over Beijing and suppressing O3 deterioration in northern suburb. Strengthening VOCs control and keeping NOx abatement, especially in June, will be vital to reverse O3 increase trend in Beijing.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of near-surface ozone concentration and potential source areas in northern China during 2015-2020. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2023; 30:89123-89139. Abstract
Near-surface ozone (O3) pollution has become one of the main factors hampering urban air quality in northern China. However, on a spatiotemporal scale, dynamic transport paths and potential source areas of O3 in northern China are ambiguous. In addition, we suspect that the contribution of transportation activities to urban O3 concentrations developed in northern China may be underestimated. In this study, the HYSPLIT, PSCF, CWT and GTWR model were used to study the transmission paths, potential source areas and driving factors of urban O3 concentration on a spatiotemporal scale. The average annual concentration of surface O3 (the 90th percentile of MDA8) was 172 ± 29 μg/m3 in northern China from 2015 to 2020. In terms of inter-annual variation, the urban O3 concentration increased from 2015 to 2018, and decreased after 2018. On the spatial scale, the areas with high O3 concentration were mainly clustered in industrial cities (Tangshan, Baoding, Shijiazhuang, Xingtai and Handan). During the study period, the area with high O3 concentration in northern China shifted from northwest to southeast. From 2015 to 2020, the influence of long-distance air mass trajectories from Xinjiang and Siberi on airflow transport in Beijing city dominates (78.60%) The average percentage of short-distance transport trajectories from Shandong Peninsula region is about 21.40%. The core potential source areas of O3 pollution shifted from northwest to southeast, but the contribution to O3 pollution in Beijing gradually weakened during the same period. Temperature and relative humidity were the main meteorological driving factors affecting O3 concentration in the study area, while population density, the proportion of secondary industry in GDP, industrial smoke (dust) emissions, and passenger traffic were the main non-meteorological factors. During the period study, the influence of industrial and traffic emissions had a more significant impact on O3 concentration in northern China, which will require that more attention be paid to emission mitigation in the regional industrial and passenger transportation sector, as well as the joint prevention and control of O3 pollution in northern China in the future.

Assessing the health impacts of PM 2.5 and ozone pollution and their comprehensive correlation in Chinese cities based on extended correlation coefficient. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2023; 262:115125. Abstract
The coordinated control of PM2.5 and ozone pollution is becoming more and more important in the current and next stage of Chinese environmental pollution control. Existing studies are unable to provide sufficient quantitative assessments of the correlation of PM2.5 and ozone pollution to support the coordinated control of the two air pollutants. This study develops a systematic method to comprehensively assess the correlation between PM2.5 and ozone pollution, including the evaluation of the impact of two air pollutants on human health and the extended correlation coefficient (ECC) for assessing the bivariate correlation index of PM2.5-ozone pollution in Chinese cities. According to the latest studies on epidemiology conducted in China, we take cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and respiratory diseases as the ozone pollution's health burden when evaluating the health impact of ozone pollution. The results show that the health impact of PM2.5 in China decreases by 25.9 % from 2015 to 2021, while the health impact of ozone increases by 11.8 %. The ECC of 335 cities in China shows an increasing-decreasing trend but has generally increased from 2015 to 2021. The study provides important support for an in-depth understanding of the correlation and development trend of Chinese PM2.5 and ozone pollution by classifying the comprehensive PM2.5-ozone correlation performances of Chinese cities into four types. China or other countries will get better environmental benefits by implementing different coordinated management approaches for different correlative types of regions based on the assessment method in this study.

Winter and spring variation in sources, chemical components and toxicological responses of urban air particulate matter samples in Guangzhou, China. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 845:157382. Abstract
The sources and chemical components of urban air particles exhibit seasonal variations that may affect their hazardousness to human health. Our aims were to investigate winter and spring variation in particulate matter (PM) sources, components and toxicological responses of different PM size fractions from samples collected in Guangzhou, China. Four size-segregated PM samples (PM10-2.5, PM2.5-1, PM1-0.2, and PM0.2) were collected separately during winter (December 2017 and January 2018) and spring (March 2018). All PM samples were analyzed for chemical components and characterized by source. RAW 264.7 macrophages were exposed to four doses of PM samples for 24 h. Cytotoxicity, oxidation, cell cycle, genotoxicity and inflammatory parameters were tested. PM concentrations were higher in the winter samples and caused more severe cytotoxicity and oxidative damage than to PM in the spring samples. PM in winter and spring led to increases in cell cycle and genotoxicity. The trends of size-segregated PM components were consistent in winter and spring samples. Metallic elements and PAHs were found in the largest concentrations in winter PM, but ions were found in the largest concentrations in spring PM. metallic elements, PAHs and ions in size-segregated PM samples were associated with most toxicological endpoints. Soil dust and biomass burning were the main sources of PM in winter, whereas traffic exhaust and biomass burning was the main source with of spring PM. Our results suggest that the composition of PM samples from Guangzhou differed during winter and spring, which led to strong variations in toxicological responses. The results demonstrate the importance of examining a different particle sizes, compositions and sources across different seasons, for human risk assessment.

Long-term trends of atmospheric hot-and-polluted episodes (HPE) and the public health implications in the Pearl River Delta region of China. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2022; 311:119782. [PMID: 35934153 DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2022.119782] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/28/2022] [Revised: 07/08/2022] [Accepted: 07/11/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
Air pollution and extreme heat have been responsible for more than a million deaths in China every year, especially in densely urbanized regions. While previous studies intensively evaluated air pollution episodes and extreme heat events, a limited number of studies comprehensively assessed atmospheric hot-and-polluted-episodes (HPE) - an episode with simultaneously high levels of air pollution and temperature - which have potential adverse synergic impacts on human health. This study focused on the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China due to its high temperature in summer and poor air quality throughout a year. We employed geostatistical downscaling to model meteorology at a spatial resolution of 1 km, and applied a machine learning algorithm (XGBoost) to estimate a high-resolution (1 km) daily concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) for June to October over 20 years (2000-2019). Our results indicate an increasing trend (∼50%) in the frequency of HPE occurrence in the first decade (2000-2010). Conversely, the annual frequency of HPE occurrence reduced (16.7%), but its intensity increased during the second decade (2010-2019). The northern cities in the PRD region had higher levels of PM2.5 and O3 than their southern counterparts. During HPEs, regional daily PM2.5 exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese guideline levels by 75% and 25%, respectively, while the O3 exceeded the WHO O3 standard by up to 69%. Overall, 567,063 (95% confidence interval (CI): 510,357-623,770) and 52,231 (95%CI: 26,116-78,346) excessive deaths were respectively attributable to exposure to PM2.5 and O3 in the PRD region. Our findings imply the necessity and urgency to formulate co-benefit policies to mitigate the region's air pollution and heat problems.

Abstract
Variations in marine and terrestrial geographical environments can cause considerable differences in meteorological conditions, economic features, and population density (PD) levels between coastal and inland cities, which in turn can affect the urban air quality. In this study, a five-year (2016-2020) dataset encompassing air monitoring (from the China National Environmental Monitoring Centre), socioeconomic statistical (from the Shandong Province Bureau of Statistics) and meteorological data (from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Information, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) was employed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and underlying drivers of urban ozone (O3) in Shandong Province, a region with both land and sea environments in eastern China. The main research methods included the multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model and wavelet analysis. From 2016 to 2019, the O3 concentration increased year by year in most cities, but in 2020, the O3 concentration in all cities decreased. O3 concentration exhibited obvious regional differences, with higher levels in inland areas and lower levels in eastern coastal areas. The MGWR analysis results indicated the relationship between PD, urbanization rate (UR), and O3 was greater in coastal cities than that in the inland cities. Furthermore, the wavelet coherence (WTC) analysis results indicated that the daily maximum temperature was the most important factor influencing the O3 concentration. Compared with NO, NO2, and NOx (NOx ≡ NO + NO2), the ratio of NO2/NO was more coherent with O3. In addition, the temperature, the wind speed, nitrogen oxides, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exerted a greater impact on O3 in coastal cities than that in inland cities. In summary, the effects of the various abovementioned factors on O3 differed between coastal cities and inland cities. The present study could provide a scientific basis for targeted O3 pollution control in coastal and inland cities.

Development of GRAPES-CUACE adjoint model version 2.0 and its application in sensitivity analysis of ozone pollution in north China. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2022; 826:153879. Abstract
We presented the development of the gaseous chemistry adjoint module of the meteorological-chemical model system GRAPES-CUACE (Global/Regional Assimilation and PrEdiction System coupled with CMA Unified Atmospheric Chemistry Environmental Forecasting System) on the basis of the previously constructed aerosol adjoint module. The latest version of the GRAPES-CUACE adjoint model mainly includes the adjoint of the physical and chemical processes, the adjoint of the transport processes, and the adjoint of interface programs, of both gas and aerosol. The adjoint implementation was validated for the full model, and adjoint results showed good agreement with brute force sensitivities. We also applied the newly developed adjoint model to the sensitivity analysis of an ozone episode occurred in Beijing on July 2, 2017, as well as the design of emission-reduction strategies for this episode. The relationships between the ozone concentration and precursor emissions were well captured by the adjoint model. It is indicated that for a case used here, the Beijing peak ozone concentration was influenced mostly by local emissions (6.2-24.3%), as well as by surrounding emissions, including Hebei (4.4-16.8%), Tianjin (1.8-6.6%), Shandong (1.8-2.6%), and Shanxi (<1%). In addition, reduction of NOx, VOCs, and CO emissions in these regions would effectively decrease the Beijing peak ozone concentration. This study highlights the capability of GRAPES-CUACE adjoint model in quantifying "emission-concentration" relationship and in providing guidance for environmental control policy.

Quantification of SO2 Emission Variations and the Corresponding Prediction Improvements Made by Assimilating Ground-Based Observations. ATMOSPHERE 2022. Abstract
In this research, a new time-resolved emission inversion system was developed to investigate variations in SO2 emission in China during the COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) lockdown period based on a four-dimensional variational (4DVar) inversion method to dynamically optimize the SO2 inventory by assimilating the ground-based hourly observation data. The inversion results obtained were validated in the North China Plain (NCP). Two sets of experiments were carried out based on the original and optimized inventories during the pre-lockdown and lockdown period to quantify the SO2 emission variations and the corresponding prediction improvement. The SO2 emission changes due to the lockdown in the NCP were quantified by the differences in the averaged optimized inventories between the pre-lockdown and lockdown period. As a response to the lockdown control, the SO2 emissions were reduced by 20.1% on average in the NCP, with ratios of 20.7% in Beijing, 20.2% in Tianjin, 26.1% in Hebei, 18.3% in Shanxi, 19.1% in Shandong, and 25.9% in Henan, respectively. These were mainly attributed to the changes caused by the heavy industry lockdown in these areas. Compared to the model performance based on the original inventory, the optimized daily SO2 emission inventory significantly improved the model SO2 predictions during the lockdown period, with the correlation coefficient (R) value increasing from 0.28 to 0.79 and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) being reduced by more than 30%. Correspondingly, the performance of PM2.5 was slightly improved, with R-value increasing from 0.67 to 0.74 and the RMSE being reduced by 8% in the meantime. These statistics indicate the good optimization ability of the time-resolved emission inversion system.

Photochemical ozone pollution in five Chinese megacities in summer 2018. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2021; 801:149603. Abstract
To investigate photochemical ozone (O3) pollution in urban areas in China, O3 and its precursors and meteorological parameters were simultaneously measured in five megacities in China in summer 2018. Moderate wind speeds, strong solar radiation and high temperature were observed in all cities, indicating favorable meteorological conditions for local O3 formation. However, the unusually frequent precipitation caused by typhoons reaching the eastern coastline resulted in the least severe air pollution in Shanghai. The highest O3 level was found in Beijing, followed by Lanzhou and Wuhan, while relatively lower O3 value was recorded in Chengdu and Shanghai. Photochemical box model simulations revealed that net O3 production rate in Lanzhou was the largest, followed by Beijing, Wuhan and Chengdu, while it was the lowest in Shanghai. Besides, the O3 formation was mainly controlled by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in most cities, but co-limited by VOCs and nitrogen oxides in Lanzhou. Moreover, the dominant VOC groups contributing to O3 formation were oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) in Beijing and Wuhan, alkenes in Lanzhou, and aromatics and OVOCs in Shanghai and Chengdu. Source apportionment analysis identified six sources of O3 precursors in these cities, including liquefied petroleum gas usage, diesel exhaust, gasoline exhaust, industrial emissions, solvent usage, and biogenic emissions. Gasoline exhaust dominated the O3 formation in Beijing, and LPG usage and industrial emissions made comparable contributions in Lanzhou, while LPG usage and solvent usage played a leading role in Wuhan and Chengdu, respectively. The findings are helpful to mitigate O3 pollution in China.

Abstract
Gaining insight into the response of surface ozone (O3) formation to its precursors plays an important role in the policy-making of O3 pollution control. However, the real atmosphere is an open and dissipative system, and its complexity poses a great challenge to the study of nonlinear relations between O3 and its precursors. At present, model-based methods based on reductionism try to restore the real atmospheric photochemical system, by coupling meteorological model and chemical transport model in temporal and spatial resolution completely. Nevertheless, large inconsistencies between predictions and true values still exist, due to the great uncertainty originated from emission inventory, photochemical reaction mechanism and meteorological factors. Recently, based on field observations, some nonlinear methods have successfully revealed the complex emergent properties (long-term persistence, multi-fractal, etc) in coupling correlation between O3 and its precursors at different time scales. The emergent properties are closely associated with the intrinsic dynamics of atmospheric photochemical system. Taking them into account when building O3 prediction model, is helpful to reduce the uncertainty in the results. Nonlinear methods (fractal, chaos, etc) based on holism can give new insights into the nonlinear relations between O3 and its precursors. Changes of thinking models in methodology are expected to improve the precision of forecasting O3 concentration. This paper has reviewed the advances of different methods for studying the sensitivity of O3 formation to its precursors during the past few decades. This review highlights that it is necessary to incorporate the emergent properties obtained by nonlinear methods into the modern models, for assessing O3 formation under combined air pollution environment more accurately. Moreover, the scaling property of coupling correlation detected in the real observations of O3 and its precursors could be used to test and improve the simulation performance of modern models.

Impact of meteorological conditions at multiple scales on ozone concentration in the Yangtze River Delta. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2021; 28:62991-63007. Abstract
Tropospheric ozone is known to have adverse effects on human health. Ozone pollution events are often associated with specific atmospheric circulation conditions. Therefore, studying the relationship between atmospheric circulation and ozone is particularly important for early warning and forecasting of ozone pollution events. Focusing on the Yangtze River Delta region, particularly in four important large industrial cities (Xuzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou) in the Yangtze River Delta, the T-mode objective classification method was applied to classify the weather circulation that mainly affects the Yangtze River Delta region into nine types. Local wind fields for the four industrial cities were classified according to their propensity for ventilation, stagnation, and recirculation based on the Allwine and Whiteman method. Based on the analysis of large-scale atmospheric circulation, we concluded that certain circulation patterns correspond to excessive ozone concentrations, while other circulation patterns correspond to good air quality. Moreover, ozone pollution was not closely related to local regional transmission. The importance of high temperatures in potentiating ozone pollution was also identified in the study area, whereas the effect of relative humidity was negligible. Finally, the importance of the different scale atmospheric motions was analyzed by studying two specific ozone pollution events in Xuzhou area (March, 2019) and Nanjing area (July-August, 2017). This analysis was complemented by HYSPLIT model's outputs to simulate the pollutant diffusion path. Regarding the first episode, ozone concentration is often closely related to the slowly approaching thermal high-pressure system. In the second episode, local transmission had little effect on the generation and spread of ozone pollution. Furthermore, and comparing the circulation conditions with local meteorological factors, it was found that the increase in ozone concentration was often accompanied by higher temperature, and the response to humidity was not clear.

Stronger secondary pollution processes despite decrease in gaseous precursors: A comparative analysis of summer 2020 and 2019 in Beijing. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2021; 279:116923. [PMID: 33751950 DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2021.116923] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2020] [Revised: 03/04/2021] [Accepted: 03/05/2021] [Indexed: 06/12/2023]
Abstract
To control the spread of COVID-19, China implemented a series of lockdowns, limiting various offline interactions. This provided an opportunity to study the response of air quality to emissions control. By comparing the characteristics of pollution in the summers of 2019 and 2020, we found a significant decrease in gaseous pollutants in 2020. However, particle pollution in the summer of 2020 was more severe; PM2.5 levels increased from 35.8 to 44.7 μg m-3, and PM10 increased from 51.4 to 69.0 μg m-3 from 2019 to 2020. The higher PM10 was caused by two sandstorm events on May 11 and June 3, 2020, while the higher PM2.5 was the result of enhanced secondary formation processes indicated by the higher sulfate oxidation rate (SOR) and nitrate oxidation rate (NOR) in 2020. Higher SOR and NOR were attributed mainly to higher relative humidity and stronger oxidizing capacity. Analysis of PMx distribution showed that severe haze occurred when particles within Bin2 (size ranging 1-2.5 μm) dominated. SO42-(1/2.5) and SO42-(2.5/10) remained stable under different periods at 0.5 and 0.8, respectively, indicating that SO42- existed mainly in smaller particles. Decreases in NO3-(1/2.5) and increases in NO3-(2.5/10) from clean to polluted conditions, similar to the variations in PMx distribution, suggest that NO3- played a role in the worsening of pollution. O3 concentrations were higher in 2020 (108.6 μg m-3) than in 2019 (96.8 μg m-3). Marked decreases in fresh NO alleviated the titration of O3. Furthermore, the oxidation reaction of NO2 that produces NO3- was dominant over the photochemical reaction of NO2 that produces O3, making NO2 less important for O3 pollution. In comparison, a lower VOC/NOx ratio (less than 10) meant that Beijing is a VOC-limited area; this indicates that in order to alleviate O3 pollution in Beijing, emissions of VOCs should be controlled.

Long-range transport of ozone across the eastern China seas: A case study in coastal cities in southeastern China. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2021; 768:144520. Abstract
Tropospheric ozone (O3) can be transported influenced by large-scale circulation. In this study, an ozone pollution episode in 6 cities of southeastern coastal area of China (SCA) in autumn 2017 was investigated. Compared with the typical local ozone pollution, there was no significant diurnal variations in this pollution episode, the O3 concentrations maintained a stable level of about 47 ppb continuously. The WRF-CMAQ model as well as the coupled process analysis (PA) and source apportionment modules were used to simulate the formation and transport and quantify the contributions to O3. Besides, the HYSPLIT model was used to calculate the backward trajectories arriving in the cities. We find that this pollution was mainly caused by O3 transport from the eastern China seas (ECS). Under the movement of the Mongolian high-pressure, the O3 precursors emitted from Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Northeast China (NEC) and Japan-Korea (JK) were transported to ECS then generated O3 through photochemical reactions. Due to the weak nitrogen oxide titration and the extremely weak ozone deposition on the water surface, O3 concentrations maintained high during the movement of air masses over ECS and finally affected SCA after long-range transport. The contributions of horizontal advections were significant basically all the day with hourly contribution about 10 ppb hr-1 and extended from surface to 500 m above the ground level. JK contributed the most, with multi-days averaged contribution about 5 ppb and peak up to 30 ppb. The contributions of BTH and NEC were comparable, with average about 2 ppb and hourly peak of 19 and 10 ppb, respectively. For the first time, this study clearly shows that the O3 precursors emitted from northern China and Japan-Korea contribute to the O3 pollution in SCA under certain weather conditions, which will help to better understand and predict the O3 pollution in that area.

Abstract
Effective mitigation of surface ozone pollution entails detailed knowledge of the contributing precursors' sources. We use the GEOS-Chem adjoint model to analyze the precursors contributing to surface ozone in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area (BTH) of China on days of different ozone pollution severities in June 2019. We find that BTH ozone on heavily polluted days is sensitive to local emissions, as well as to precursors emitted from the provinces south of BTH (Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu, collectively the SHJ area). Heavy ozone pollution in BTH can be mitigated effectively by reducing NOx (from industrial processes and transportation), ≥C3 alkenes (from on-road gasoline vehicles and industrial processes), and xylenes (from paint use) emitted from both BTH and SHJ, as well as by reducing CO (from industrial processes, transportation, and power generation) and ≥C4 alkanes (from industrial processes, paint and solvent use, and on-road gasoline vehicles) emissions from SHJ. In addition, reduction of NOx, xylene, and ≥C3 alkene emissions within BTH would effectively decrease the number of BTH ozone-exceedance days. Our analysis pinpoint the key areas and activities for locally and regionally coordinated emission control efforts to improve surface ozone air quality in BTH.

Abstract
Ambient ozone (O3) pollution has become a big issue in China. Recent studies have linked long- and short-term O3 exposure to several public health risks. In this study, we (1) characterize the long-term and short-term O3-attributed health metric in China from 2015 to 2019; (2) estimate the surface O3 trends; and (3) quantify the long-term and short-term health impacts (i.e. all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality) in 350 urban Chinese cities. In these 5-years, the national annual average of daily maximum 8 h average (AVGDMA8) O3 concentrations and warm-season (April-September) 4th highest daily maximum 8 h average (4DMA8) O3 concentrations increased from 74.0 ± 15.5 μg/m3 (mean ± standard deviation) to 82.3 ± 12.0 μg/m3 and 167 ± 37.0 μg/m3 to 174 ± 30.0 μg/m3 respectively. During this period, the DMA8 O3 concentration increased by 1.9 ± 3.3 μg/m3/yr across China, with over 70% of the monitoring sites showing a positive upward trend and 19.4% with trends >5 μg/m3/yr. The estimated long-term all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory premature mortalities attributable to AVGDMA8 O3 exposure in 350 Chinese cities were 181,000 (95% CI: 91,500-352,000), 112,000 (95% CI: 38,100-214,000) and 33,800 (95% CI: 0-71,400) in 2019, showing increases of 52.5%, 52.9% and 54.6% respectively compared to 2015 levels. Similarly, short-term all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory premature mortalities attributed to ambient 4DMA8 O3 exposure were 156,000 (95% CI: 85,300-227,000), 73,500 (95% CI: 27,500-119,000) and 28,600 (95% CI: 14,500-42,800) in 2019, increases of 19.6%, 19.8% and 21.2% respectively compared to 2015. The results of this study are important in ascertaining the effectiveness of recent emission control measures and to identify the areas that require urgent attention.

Abstract
The Chinese government, as a policy response, has continued to invest efforts and resources to implement cost-effective air pollution control technologies and stringent regulation to reduce emissions from the most contributing sectors to protect the environment and public health. The higher density of monitoring stations (> 1600) distributed across China provides a timely opportunity to use them to study in detail the national pollution trends in light of more stringent air pollution control policies. In the present study, air quality datasets comprising hourly concentrations of PM2.5, O3, NO2, and SO2 collected across 1309, 1341, 1289, and 1347 monitoring stations respectively were obtained from the National Environmental Monitoring Centre over 4 years (2015-2018) and trend analysis was performed. Results indicate that the overall annual trends for PM2.5 and SO2 were - 2.9 ± 2.7 and - 3.2 ± 3.2 μg/m3/year, while the winter trends were - 4.8 ± 5.8 and - 6.9 ± 8.4 μg/m3/year respectively across China. The daily maximum 8-h average (DMA8) ozone concentration showed a significant positive trend of 2.4 ± 4.6 μg/m3/year, which was comparatively higher in summer at 4.4 ± 9.0 μg/m3/year. On the other side, NO2 trend is not great in number (- 0.45 ± 2.0 μg/m3/year). Overall, 62.2%, 61.8%, and 20.9% of PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 monitoring stations were associated with a negative trend of ≥ - 2 μg/m3/year. For O3 DMA8 concentrations, 50.7% of the monitoring stations showed a significant positive trend of ≥ 2 μg/m3/year. In light of the Chinese government's increasing impetus on combating air pollution and climate change via new policy regulations, it is important to understand the spatio-temporal distributions and relative contributions of the spectrum of gaseous pollutants to the pollution loads as well as identify changing emission loads across sectors. The results of this study will facilitate the formulation of evidence-based air pollution reduction strategies and policies.

Source apportionment of hourly-resolved ambient volatile organic compounds: Influence of temporal resolution. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2020; 725:138243. Abstract
High temporal-resolution VOC concentration data can provide detailed and important temporal variations of VOC species and emission sources, which is not possible when using coarse temporal-resolution data. In this study, we utilized the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model to conduct source apportionment of hourly concentrations of nineteen VOC species and CO measured at the Mong Kok air quality monitoring station, operated by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, from January 2013 to December 2014. The PMF analysis of the hourly dataset (PMF_Hourly) identified five sources, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (contribution of 45%), gasoline exhaust (21%), combustion (20%), biogenic emission (9%), and paint solvents (6%). The diurnal patterns of VOC emissions from identified sources are likely to be affected by the strength of emissions, variation of the planetary boundary layer height, and photochemical reactions. In addition, the PMF analyses of hourly and 24-hour averaged data of the hourly-resolved data (PMF_Hourly and PMF_Daily) were generally comparable, but the time series of VOC emissions from PMF_Hourly could not be well captured by PMF_Daily for two local VOC sources of gasoline exhaust and LPG. This study highlights the benefit of high temporal-resolution measurement data in apportioning VOC sources, hence providing critical information on VOC emission sources (e.g., diurnal variations) for controlling VOC emissions effectively.

Prediction model for air particulate matter levels in the households of elderly individuals in Hong Kong. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2020; 717:135323. Abstract
Air pollution has shown to cause adverse health effects on mankind. Aging causes functional decline and leaves elderly people more susceptible to health threats associated with air pollution exposure. Elderly spend approximately 80% of their lifetime at home every day. To understand air pollution exposure, indoor air pollutants are the targets for consideration especially for the elderly population. However, indoor air monitoring for epidemiological studies requires a large population, is labor intensive and time consuming. As a result, a prediction model is necessary. For 3 consecutive days in summer and winter, 24-h average of mass concentrations of fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm: PM2.5) were measured in indoors for 116 households. A PM2.5 prediction model for elderly households in Hong Kong has been developed by combining ambient PM2.5 concentrations obtained from land use regression model and questionnaire-elicited information related to the indoor PM2.5 sources. The fitted linear mixed-effects model is moderately predictive for the observed indoor PM2.5, with R2 = 0.67 (or R2 = 0.61 by cross-validation). The model shows indoor PM2.5 was positively influenced by outdoor PM2.5 levels. Meteorological factors (e.g. temperature and relative humidity) were related to the indoor PM2.5 in a relatively complex manner. Congested living areas, opening windows for extended periods for ventilation and use of liquefied petroleum gas for cooking were the factors determining the ultimate indoor air quality. This study aims to provide information about controlling household air quality and can be used for future epidemiological studies associated with indoor air pollution in large population.

Abstract
In recent years, ozone (O3) pollution in China has shown a worsening trend. Due to the vast territory of China, O3 pollution is a widespread and complex problem. It is vital to understand the current spatiotemporal distribution of O3 pollution in China. In this study, we collected hourly data on O3 concentrations in 338 cities from January 1, 2016, to February 28, 2019, to analyze O3 pollution in China from a spatiotemporal perspective. The spatial analysis showed that the O3 concentrations exceeded the limit in seven geographical regions of China to some extent, with more serious pollution in North, East, and Central China. The O3 concentrations in the eastern areas were usually higher than those in the western areas. The temporal analysis showed seasonal variations in O3 concentration, with the highest O3 concentration in the summer and the lowest in the winter. The weekend effect, which occurs in other countries (such as the USA), was found only in some cities in China. We also found that the highest O3 concentration usually occurred in the afternoon and the lowest was in the early morning. The comprehensive analysis in this paper could improve our understanding of the severity of O3 pollution in China.

Abstract
Heatwaves and air pollution are serious environmental problems that adversely affect human health. While related studies have typically employed ground-level data, the long-term and episodic characteristics of meteorology and air quality at higher altitudes have yet to be fully understood. This study developed a 3-Dimensional Real-timE Atmospheric Monitoring System (3DREAMS) to measure and analyze the vertical profiles of horizontal wind speed and direction, vertical wind velocity as well as aerosol backscatter. The system was applied to Hong Kong, a highly dense city with complex topography, during each season and including hot-and-polluted episodes (HPEs) in 2019. The results reveal that the high spatial wind variability and wind characteristics in the lower atmosphere in Hong Kong can extend upwards by up to 0.66 km, thus highlighting the importance of mountains for the wind environment in the city. Both upslope and downslope winds were observed at one site, whereas downward air motions predominated at another site. The high temperature and high concentration of fine particulate matter during HPEs were caused by a significant reduction in both horizontal and vertical wind speeds that established conditions favorable for heat and air pollutant accumulation, and by the prevailing westerly wind promoting transboundary air pollution. The findings of this study are anticipated to provide valuable insight for weather forecasting and air quality studies. The 3DREAMS will be further developed to monitor upper atmosphere wind and air quality over the Greater Bay Area of China.

Mapping ozone source-receptor relationship and apportioning the health impact in the Pearl River Delta region using adjoint sensitivity analysis. ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENT (OXFORD, ENGLAND : 1994) 2020; 222:1-117026. Abstract
While fine particulate matters are decreasing in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, the regional ozone (O3) shows an increasing trend that affects human health, leading to an urgent need for scientific understanding of source-receptor relationship between O3 and its precursor emissions given the changing background composition. We advanced and applied an adjoint air quality model to map contributions of individual O3 precursor emission sources [nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compound (VOC)] at each location to annual regional O3 concentrations and to identify the possible dominant influential pathways of emission sources to O3 at different spatiotemporal scales. Additionally, we introduced the novel adjoint sensitivity approach to assess the relationship between precursor emissions and O3-induced premature mortality. Adjoint results show that Shenzhen was a major source contributor to regional O3 throughout all seasons, of which 49.4% (3.8%) were from its NOx (VOC) emissions. Local emissions (within PRD) contributed to 83% of the regional O3 whereas only ~54% of the estimated ~4000 regional O3-induced premature mortalities. The discrepancy between these two contributions was because O3-induced mortalities are dependent on not only O3 concentration, but incident rate and population density. We also found that a city with low O3-induced mortalities could have significant emission contributions to health impact in the region since the transport pathways could be through transport of local O3 or through transport of O3 precursors that form regional O3 thereafter. It is therefore necessary to formulate emission control policies from both air quality and public health perspectives, and it is also critical to have better understanding of influential pathways of emission sources to O3.

Abstract
With the ground-level ozone pollution problem increasingly prominent in recent years in China, it is particularly important in basic researches on ozone contamination characteristics. In this study, 13 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) area were examined to determine the characteristics of surface ozone (O3) from 2015 to 2018. Due to the photochemical oxidation of ozone precursors (such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide) along with the presence of sunlight and characteristics of local emission sources, the O3 and oxidant (OX) concentrations showed obvious seasonal variation and daily variation. It implicated that the O3 concentrations reached the maximum during summer. The concentrations of O3 were higher at daytime than those measured at nighttime. The ozone weekend effect was estimated by the difference and deviation, which exhibited that the difference between weekday and weekend were related to the concentrations of ozone precursors and PM, vehicle emissions, and solar radiation. Moreover, the O3 concentrations decreased with the increase of other air pollutants by correlation analysis. The ozone pollution was easily formed at light and moderate polluted periods when compared to other air quality levels.
