Detecting global irrigated areas by using satellite and reanalysis products

Multi-temporal assessment of land surface temperatures as an indicator of land use/cover changes and climate variability in the Develi Basin, Turkey

Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter that reflects land surface processes of water and energy balance and has been used in assessment of land use/cover changes. However, the use of LST in monitoring changes in non-urban areas such as agricultural areas and wetlands is still limited. In this study, we aim to determine the spatial and temporal changes in LST in a semi-arid agricultural basin in Turkey (Develi Basin), where land use/cover and climatic conditions showed considerable variability since 1980s. Irrigated agriculture have expanded in the basin since 1987, after the construction of a large irrigation project. The basin hosts an internationally important wetland, called the Sultan Marshes, affected negatively by irrigation expansion. The study covers a 39-year period from 1984 to 2022. Four Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images acquired in 1984, 1987, 2003, and 2007 and two Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS images acquired in 2014 and 2022 were used in the analyses. The land use/cover changes were evaluated based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). LST was estimated through top-of-atmosphere brightness temperature from thermal bands of Landsat images. Climate variability from 2014 to 2022 was analyzed with statistical methods. The results indicated that Develi Basin faced both spatial and temporal land use/cover changes. The area covered with natural steppe vegetation and water bodies decreased in the basin. In contrast, the sparsely and densely vegetated soil covers, which mostly denote agricultural areas, increased. Changes in LST values were observed from 1984 to 2022 as a result of climatic factors and land use/cover changes. LST changes were variable across different land use/cover types; LST decreased in irrigated areas and increased in lakes that went dry over years. LST changes proved useful for evaluating land use/cover changes and climatic variations in agricultural basins.

A Review of Irrigation Information Retrievals from Space and Their Utility for Users

Irrigation represents one of the most impactful human interventions in the terrestrial water cycle. Knowing the distribution and extent of irrigated areas as well as the amount of water used for irrigation plays a central role in modeling irrigation water requirements and quantifying the impact of irrigation on regional climate, river discharge, and groundwater depletion. Obtaining high-quality global information about irrigation is challenging, especially in terms of quantification of the water actually used for irrigation. Here, we review existing Earth observation datasets, models, and algorithms used for irrigation mapping and quantification from the field to the global scale. The current observation capacities are confronted with the results of a survey on user requirements on satellite-observed irrigation for agricultural water resources’ management. Based on this information, we identify current shortcomings of irrigation monitoring capabilities from space and phrase guidelines for potential future satellite missions and observation strategies.

Regression Models for Soil Water Storage Estimation Using the ESA CCI Satellite Soil Moisture Product: A Case Study in Northeast Portugal

The European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative Soil Moisture (ESA CCI SM) product provides soil moisture estimates from radar satellite data with a daily temporal resolution. Despite validation exercises with ground data that have been performed since the product’s launch, SM has not yet been consistently related to soil water storage, which is a key step for its application for prediction purposes. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between soil water storage (S), which was obtained from soil water balance computations with ground meteorological data, and soil moisture, which was obtained from radar data, as affected by soil water storage capacity (Smax). As a case study, a 14-year monthly series of soil water storage, produced via soil water balance computations using ground meteorological data from northeast Portugal and Smax from 25 mm to 150 mm, were matched with the corresponding monthly averaged SM product. Linear (I) and logistic (II) regression models relating S with SM were compared. Model performance (r2 in the 0.8–0.9 range) varied non-monotonically with Smax, with it being the highest at an Smax of 50 mm. The logistic model (II) performed better than the linear model (I) in the lower range of Smax. Improvements in model performance obtained with segregation of the data series in two subsets, representing soil water recharge and depletion phases throughout the year, outlined the hysteresis in the relationship between S and SM.

Detection of Irrigated and Rainfed Crops in Temperate Areas Using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Time Series

The detection of irrigated areas by means of remote sensing is essential to improve agricultural water resource management. Currently, data from the Sentinel constellation offer new possibilities for mapping irrigated areas at the plot scale. Until now, few studies have used Sentinel-1 (S1) and Sentinel-2 (S2) data to provide approaches for mapping irrigated plots in temperate areas. This study proposes a method for detecting irrigated and rainfed plots in a temperate area (southwestern France) jointly using optical (Sentinel-2), radar (Sentinel-1) and meteorological (SAFRAN) time series, through a classification algorithm. Monthly cumulative indices calculated from these satellite data were used in a Random Forest classifier. Two data years have been used, with different meteorological characteristics, allowing the performance of the method to be analysed under different climatic conditions. The combined use of the whole cumulative data (radar, optical and weather) improves the irrigated crop classifications (Overall Accuary (OA) ≈ 0.7) compared to the classifications obtained using each data separately (OA < 0.5). The use of monthly cumulative rainfall allows a significant improvement of the Fscore of irrigated and rainfed classes. Our study also reveals that the use of cumulative monthly indices leads to performances similar to those of the use of 10-day images while considerably reducing computational resources.

Satellite-based global-scale irrigation water use and its contemporary trends

Irrigated agriculture is important for satisfying the increasing world food demand, but it interrupts the natural hydrological cycle by applying additional water to crops. Accurate information regarding irrigation water use (IWU) is a prerequisite to exploit land surface modeling and to quantify the uncertainty of climate projections. In this study, the global IWU was estimated for 2000-2015 by combining satellite-based soil moisture (SM) observations from the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) and the model estimated SM from European ReAnalysis-5 (ERA5). Considering irrigation as an unmodeled hydrological process in ERA5 and the ability of ESA CCI SM to capture the irrigation patterns, the global IWU was estimated by solving the water balance equations for ESA CCI and ERA5 SM. Owing to the global absence of ground-truth data for IWU, the IWU estimates were compared with the reported irrigation water withdrawals (IWWs) provided by Food and Agriculture Organization. The results indicated that satellite-based SM observations have the potential to identify global irrigation. All three ESA CCI products (active, passive, and merged) discerned the global irrigated areas satisfactorily, and the estimated IWU captured the pattern of the country-level IWWs (R = 0.77, 0.72, and 0.81 for active, passive, and merged products, respectively). However, the estimated IWU substantially underestimated the reported IWWs (bias of -76.55, -76.01, and -73.93 km³ for active, passive, and merged products, respectively) due to the coarse spatial resolution (0.25° × 0.25°) of the microwave remote sensing products and the inclusion of supplemental water in the IWWs, which was lost during distribution to crops. Trend analysis of the IWU indicated an increasing trend of the IWU in the first decade of the 21st century. However, in recent years the trend has reversed due to advances in agriculture technology and the adoption of water-efficient irrigation methods.

Improvement of Hargreaves–Samani Reference Evapotranspiration Estimates with Local Calibration

Improving irrigation water management is an important asset when facing increased water shortages. The Hargreaves–Samani (HS) method is a simple method that can be used as an alternative to the Penman–Monteith (PM) method, which requires only temperature measurements for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ETo). However, the applicability of this method relies on its calibration to local meteorological specificities. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of local calibration on the performance of the HS equation. The study was carried out for the middle portion of the São Francisco River Basin (MSFB), Brazil, and considered four calibration approaches: A1—single calibration for the entire MSFB; A2—separate calibration by clusters of months; A3—by clusters of stations; and A4—for all contexts resulting by combining A2 and A3. Months from the wet season showed larger improvements by the calibration of the HS model, since mean air temperature and its daily range showed stronger correlations to ETo. On the other hand, the months from the dry season and stations from the eastern region of MSFB performed poorly regardless of the calibration approach adopted. This occurred because, in those cases, ETo presented larger correlation to variables that are missing in the HS equation, and the use of the full PM equation seems unavoidable.
