Treatment of biologically treated landfill leachate with forward osmosis: Investigating membrane performance and cleaning protocols

Innovative stimuli-responsive membrane MSF brine rejection dilution by tertiary treated sewage effluent

In this study, treated wastewater and Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) brine were integrated into the Forward Osmosis (FO) system using pressure stimuli-responsive Nanofiltration (PSRNF) membranes to dilute magnesium, calcium, and sulfate MSF plant brine reject. The deposition of magnesium sulfate and calcium sulfate in the heat exchanger is one of the main issues affecting the performance and efficiency of MSF thermal desalination plants. Reducing the concentration of the divalent ions can minimize scale formation and deposition to a level that allows the MSF plant to operate at high top brine temperature (TBT) and without scale problems. The PSRNF membranes were chosen in the FO process because of their high water permeability, rejection of divalent and monovalent ions, small structure parameter (S), and inexpensiveness compared to commercial FO membranes. Three PSRNF membranes were tested in the FO process with the feed solution facing the active membrane layer to avoid active layer delamination. Although the PSRNF membrane exhibited negligible water flux at 0 bar, it increased when a 2-4 bar was applied to the feed solution. The wastewater temperature was set at 25 °C while 40 °C was the brine operational temperature to mimic the field situation. A maximum average water flux of 39.5 L/m2h was recorded at 4 bar feed pressure when the PSRNF membrane was used for the brine dilution, achieving up to 42% divalent ions dilution at 0.02 kWh/m3 specific power consumption. The average water flux in the PRSNF membrane was 35% higher than that in the commercial TFC FO membrane. Notably, the PSRNF membrane is ten times cheaper than commercial FO membranes. Notably, the PSRNF membrane is ten times cheaper than commercial FO membranes, achieving substantial cost reductions and pioneering advancements in FO purification technology.

Perfluorooctanoic acid-contaminated wastewater treatment by forward osmosis: Performance analysis

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent compound, raising considerable global apprehension due to its resistance to breakdown and detrimental impacts on human health and aquatic environments. Pressure-driven membrane technologies treating PFAS-contaminated water are expensive and prone to fouling. This study presented a parametric investigation of the effectiveness of cellulose triacetate membrane in the forward osmosis (FO) membrane for removing PFOA from an aqueous solution. The study examined the influence of membrane orientation modes, feed pH, draw solution composition and concentration, and PFOA concentration on the performance of FO. The experimental results demonstrated that PFOA rejection was 99 % with MgCl2 and slightly >98 % with NaCl draw solutions due to the mechanism of PFOA binding to the membrane surface through Mg2+ ions. This finding highlights the crucial role of the draw solution's composition in PFOA treatment. Laboratory results revealed that membrane rejection of PFOA was 99 % at neutral and acidic pH levels but decreased to 95 % in an alkaline solution at pH 9. The decrease in membrane rejection is attributed to the dissociation of the membrane's functional groups, consequently causing pore swelling. The results were confirmed by calculating the average pore radius of the CTA membrane, which increased from 27.94 nm at pH 5 to 30.70 nm at pH 9. Also, variations in the PFOA concentration from 5 to 100 mg/L did not significantly impact the membrane rejection, indicating the process's capability to handle a wide range of PFOA concentrations. When seawater was the draw solution, the FO membrane rejected 99 % of PFOA concentrations ranging from 5 mg/L to 100 mg/L. The CTA FO treating PFOA-contaminated wastewater from soil remediation achieved a 90 % recovery rate and water flux recovery of 96.5 % after cleaning with DI water at 40 °C, followed by osmotic backwash. The results suggest the potential of using abundant and cost-effective natural solutions in the FO process, all without evident membrane fouling.

Smart utilisation of reverse solute diffusion in forward osmosis for water treatment: A mini review

Forward osmosis (FO) has been widely studied as a promising technology in wastewater treatment, but undesirable reverse solute diffusion (RSD) is inevitable in the FO process. The RSD is generally regarded as a negative factor for the FO process, resulting in the loss of draw solutes and reduced FO efficiency. Conventional strategies to address RSD focus on reducing the amount of reverse draw solutes by fabricating high selective FO membranes and/or selecting the draw solute with low diffusion. However, since RSD is inevitable, doubts have been raised about the strategies to cope with the already occurring reverse draw solutes in the feed solution, and the feasibility to positively utilise the RSD phenomenon to improve the FO process. Herein, we review the state-of-the-art applications of RSD and their benefits such as improving selectivity and maintaining the stability of the feed solution for both independent FO processes and FO integrated processes. We also provide an outlook and discuss important considerations, including membrane fouling, membrane development and draw/feed solution properties, in RSD utilisation for water and wastewater treatment.

Novel Approach to Landfill Wastewater Treatment Fouling Mitigation: Air Gap Membrane Distillation with Tin Sulfide-Coated PTFE Membrane

This study addressed the fouling issue in membrane distillation (M.D.) technology, a promising method for water purification and wastewater reclamation. To enhance the anti-fouling properties of the M.D. membrane, a tin sulfide (TS) coating onto polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was proposed and evaluated with air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) using landfill leachate wastewater at high recovery rates (80% and 90%). The presence of TS on the membrane surface was confirmed using various techniques, such as Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), contact angle measurement, and porosity analysis. The results indicated the TS-PTFE membrane exhibited better anti-fouling properties than the pristine PTFE membrane, and its fouling factors (FFs) were 10.4-13.1% compared to 14.4-16.5% for the PTFE membrane. The fouling was attributed to pore blockage and cake formation of carbonous and nitrogenous compounds. The study also found that physical cleaning with deionized (DI) water effectively restored the water flux, with more than 97% recovered for the TS-PTFE membrane. Additionally, the TS-PTFE membrane showed better water flux and product quality at 55 °C and excellent stability in maintaining the contact angle over time compared to the PTFE membrane.

Performance evaluation of deep eutectic solvent as a draw solute and vertical up-flow forward osmosis module for desalination of seawater

Forward osmosis (FO) has gained prominence in recent years particularly in desalination due to its ability to operate at low or no hydraulic pressure, with relatively limited membrane fouling and high-water recovery. However, pre-treatment of seawater is required to reduce membrane fouling caused by the presence of suspended solid particles. Also, a significant area of research in forward osmosis is still finding a suitable draw solute (DS) with the ideal characteristics. In this study, a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) draw solute was used and able to extract water after the 500% dilution of DS. This signifies it as the potential candidate for the ideal DS. A comparative study of plate and frame and vertical up-flow forward osmosis (VUF) FO modules has been evaluated to eliminate the drawbacks associated with FO in terms of membrane fouling and draw solute. In addition, the performance of a novel DES as reline (choline chloride-urea) has been tested in both the modules. In VUF module, significantly less fouling was observed than in the plate and frame module. The initial water flux in plate and frame module was 2.30 LMH with seawater (without pre-treatment) as feed. However, it dropped to 1 LMH after 26 h of run. However, initial water flux in VUF was 1.90 LMH, and it was maintained to 1.50 LMH after 89 h of run. Regeneration of draw solute was carried out using a phase separation method and it was observed that phase separation was only observed for 10% dilution of DES.

Low-molecular-weight dissolved organic nitrogen transformation behavior in concentrated leachate by O3 and •OH: Partition, molecular insight, and potential precursor-product relationship

Low-molecular-weight dissolved organic nitrogen (LMW-DON) is an emerging issue in concentrated leachate (CL). Ozonation is crucial to remove LMW-DON, but selectivity mechanisms of different reactive oxygen species were unknown. Here, reactions of O₃ and ^•OH with LMW-DON at different dosages were determined from composition, unsaturation/redox potential, and precursor-product relationship. The molecular weight of LMW-DON in CL presented a normal distribution and 76.5% was below 450 Da. LMW-DON with 400-1000 Da increased to 55.6%-66.7% and O/C_wa increased by over 40.0% due to electrophilic substitution of O₃. LMW-DON with <400 Da and 550-1000 Da were preferentially degraded by ^•OH at the low and high O₃ dosage, respectively. O₃ preferred to remove lipid-like (69.1%), protein-like (58.2%), and amino sugars-like (72.8%) LMW-DON, whereas ^•OH preferred to the refractory LMW-DON, such as carbohydrates-like (71.1%), lignin-like (49.6%), and tannins-like (72.5%) LMW-DON. Forty-three transformation reactions were quantified using mass difference analysis, and O₃ preferred to oxygen addition (e.g., +2O) and conversed amino to nitro groups, and saturated LMW-DON increased via unsaturated bonds rupture. ^•OH attacked the carbon groups (e.g., -CH₂) and nitrogen groups (e.g., -NH₃+O, -NO₂+H). These findings provide molecular evidence for the selectivity of oxidants with LMW-DON and improve the ozonation application in wastewater treatment.

Sodium docusate as a cleaning agent for forward osmosis membranes fouled by landfill leachate wastewater

Membrane cleaning is critical for economic and scientific reasons in wastewater treatment systems. Sodium docusate is a laxative agent and removes cerumen (ear wax). Docusate penetrates the hard ear wax, making it softer and easier to remove. The same concept could be applied to soften and remove fouling layers on the membrane surface. Once softened, the foulants can be easily flushed with water. This innovative approach can address the challenge of developing superior methods to mitigate membrane fouling and material degradation. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of sodium docusate for cleaning fouled forward osmosis membranes with real landfill leachate wastewater. Experiments were conducted to examine the impact of dose rate, contact time, flow or static conditions, and process configuration (forward osmosis (FO) or pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) upon fouling created by landfill leachate dewatering. A remarkable (99%) flux recovery was achieved using docusate at a small concentration of only 0.1% for 30 min. Furthermore, docusate can also effectively restore flux with static cleaning without using pumps to circulate the cleaning solution. Furthermore, cleaning efficiency can be achieved at neutral pH compatible with most membrane materials. From an economic and energy-saving perspective, static cleaning can almost achieve the same cleaning efficiency as kinetic cleaning for fouled forward osmosis membranes without the expense of additional pumping energy compared to kinetic cleaning. Since pumping energy is a major contributor to the overall energy of the forward osmosis system, it can be minimized to a certain degree by using a static cleaning approach and can bring good energy savings when using larger membrane areas. Studies of the contact angle on the membrane surface indicated that the contact angle was decreased compared to the fouled membrane after cleaning (e.g. 70.3° to 63.2° or FO mode and static cleaning). Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed that the cleaning strategy was successful. Infrared Spectroscopy showed that a small amount of sodium docusate remained on the membrane surface. Docusate is more environmentally friendly than acid or alkaline solutions from an environmental perspective. Furthermore, the cleaning solution can be reused for several cycles without discarding it due to the surfactant properties of docusate.

Fouling and Performance Investigation of Membrane Distillation at Elevated Recoveries for Seawater Desalination and Wastewater Reclamation

This study reports on the impact of elevated recovery (i.e., 80%, 85%, and 90%) on the fouling and performance of air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) with real seawater and landfill leachate wastewater samples using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer membranes. Increasing the feed temperature from 55 °C to 65 °C improved the water flux of seawater and wastewater and shortened the operating time by 42.8% for all recoveries. The average water flux in the 80%, 85%, and 90% recovery experiments at the 65 °C feed temperature was 32%, 37.32%, and 36.7% higher than the case of 55 °C for the same recoveries. The water flux decline was more severe at a higher temperature and recovery. The highest flux decline was observed with a 90% recovery at 65 °C feed temperature, followed by an 85% recovery at 65 °C. Close examination of the foulants layer revealed that seawater formed a cake fouling layer made predominantly of metal oxides. In contrast, the landfill leachate fouling was a combination of pore blocking and cake formation, consisting mainly of carbonous and nitrogenous compounds. Physical cleaning with deionized (DI) water at 55 °C and 65 °C and chemical cleaning with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were investigated for their efficiency in removing membrane foulants. Analytical results revealed that seawater fouling caused membrane pore blockage while wastewater fouling formed a porous layer on the membrane surface. The results showed that membrane cleaning with hydrogen peroxide restored >97% of the water flux. Interestingly, the fouling factor in seawater tests was 10%, while it was 16% for the wastewater tests.

Preparation of fouling resistant and highly perm-selective novel PSf/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membrane for efficient water purification

To meet the rising global demand for water, it is necessary to develop membranes capable of efficiently purifying contaminated water sources. Herein, we report a series of novel polysulfone (PSf)/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membranes highly permeable, selective, and fouling resistant. The membranes are composed of two-dimensional (2D) graphite oxide (GO) layers embedded with vanillin as porogen and PSf as the base polymer. There is a growing interest in addressing the synergistic effect of GO and vanillin on improving the permeability and antifouling characteristics of membranes. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to perform detailed physicochemical and morphological analyses. The optimized PSf₁₆/GO_0.15-vanillin_0.8 membrane demonstrated 92.5% and 25.4% rejection rate for 2000 ppm magnesium sulphate (MgSO₄) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions respectively. Antifouling results showed over 99% rejection for BSA and 93.57% flux recovery ratio (FRR). Experimental work evaluated the antifouling characteristics of prepared membranes to treat landfill leachate wastewater. The results showed 84-90% rejection for magnesium (Mg⁺²) and calcium (Ca⁺²) with 90.32 FRR. The study experimentally demonstrated that adding GO and vanillin to the polymeric matrix significantly improves fouling resistance and membrane performance. Future research will focus on molecular sieving for industrial separations and other niche applications using mixed matrix membranes.

Feasibility of H2O2 cleaning for forward osmosis membrane treating landfill leachate

This study reports landfill leachate treatment by the forward osmosis (FO) process using hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) for membrane cleaning. Although chemical cleaning is an effective method for fouling control, it could compromise membrane integrity. Thus, understanding the impact of chemical cleaning on the forward osmosis membrane is essential to improving the membrane performance and lifespan. Preliminary results revealed a flux recovery of 98% in the AL-FS mode (active layer facing feed solution) and 90% in the AL-DS (draw solution faces active layer) using 30% H₂O₂ solution diluted to 3% by pure water. The experimental work investigated the effects of chemical cleaning on the polyamide active and polysulfone support layers since the FO membrane could operate in both orientations. Results revealed that polysulfone support layer was more sensitive to H₂O₂ damage than the polyamide active at a neutral pH. The extended exposure of thin-film composite (TFC) FO membrane to H₂O₂ was investigated, and the active layer tolerated H₂O₂ for 72 h, and the support layer for only 40 h. Extended operation of the TFC FO membrane in the AL-FS based on a combination of physical (hydraulic flushing with DI water) and H₂O₂ was reported, and chemical cleaning with H₂O₂ could still recover 92% of the flux.
