Elemental dissolution characteristics of granite and gabbro under high-temperature water-rock interactions

In the process of developing hot dry rock (HDR) through enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), it is necessary to inject circulating water to complete thermal energy extraction. However, the injected water will react with the high-temperature rock and produce mineral dissolution, which can destroy the artificial reservoir and affect the development of geothermal energy. To explore the influence of temperature on the solution composition and mineral dissolution after water-rock reaction, this study conducted water-rock interaction experiments on gabbro and granite at different heat treatment temperatures. Subsequently, the changes of solution composition and mineral dissolution with temperature after the reaction were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and XRD. The results demonstrated that Si, Na, Ca, K, Al, and Mg did not enter the aqueous solution at the same dissolution rate. Si was the primary solute in the solution, mainly resulting from the dissolution of quartz, and the dissolution rates of metallic elements were lower. In the granite-water interaction system, metallic elements such as Na, K, Ca, and Al showed a tendency to enter the solution at low temperatures, i.e., 150-180 °C, and the dissolution rate of Si reached its peak when the water was close to the supercritical state. With the increase in temperature, the dissolution rates of Si and metallic elements showed an initial increasing trend followed by a decrease. When water is in the subcritical to the supercritical state, abrupt fluctuations in the physical properties of water can strongly affect the dissolution of minerals or rocks. The results of this study provide insights into rock corrosion fatigue and mineral scaling in EGS water environment.

Design of a low-cost active and sustainable autonomous system for heating agricultural greenhouses: A case study on strawberry (fragaria vulgaris) growth

The utilization of solar energy is a vital strategy in the agricultural sector's efforts to address and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This renewable resource can greatly decrease the industry's carbon footprint and play a significant role in combating climate change. In this context, this study examines an automatic solar system installed in a south-facing agricultural greenhouse and its effect on the growth of strawberry plants in winter. Heat is transferred from the environment during the day to the structure at night using this technology, which uses water flowing in a closed circuit that is put on the greenhouse roof. This system includes a battery, a photovoltaic solar panel to power some accessories, a copper coil placed within double glass on the greenhouse's roof, a water pump circulator, and storage tanks. Two greenhouses-one experimental with a solar heating system and the other reference without one-were used for the comparative experimental investigation. Both greenhouses are constructed on the terrace of Mohammed V University's Solar Energy and Environment Laboratory in Rabat, Morocco. An environmental monitoring system was built to automatically measure environmental parameters. Real-time data visualization and analysis may be done from any place via a website with the Internet of Things integrated into the system. The greenhouse's microclimate was improved by this low-cost technology, which also allowed for winter heating. Compared to the control greenhouse, this improvement allowed for a 17-day earlier harvest and a 30% reduction in irrigation water usage. The economic analysis findings show that the system is profitable for investments and energy savings.

Assessment of the exposure to PM2.5 in different Lebanese microenvironments at different temporal scales

The weak potential of using the sole outdoor concentrations to represent personal exposure to PM_2.5 is confirmed by the literature; therefore, it is important to account for a person's movements over time when estimating the short-term personal air pollution exposure within different microenvironments (MEs). This study is an example of applying an assessment method of the exposure to PM_2.5 in different microenvironments at different temporal scales. A low-cost particle counter (the Dylos 1700) was used; its performance was validated in comparison with equivalent instruments such the SidePak AM520 Personal Aerosol Monitor (R² = 0.89). This validation also provided a function to convert measured particle number concentrations (PNCs) into calculated particle mass concentrations. The 150 profiles that was collected on a minute-by-minute basis regarding PM_2.5 concentration from December 2018 to May 2021 highlight the influence of individual activities and contextual factors on the air quality, so that Lebanon's annual PM_2.5 mean (24.2 µg⁄m³) is 142% higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) annual mean guideline (10 µg⁄m³). Winter is the most polluted period due to the increased application of space heating devices. Additionally, the occurrence of dusty winds during the spring period leads to the elevated levels of dispersed PM_2.5. Simultaneously, the rural zones are more polluted than urban ones due to the usage of more traditional heating equipment, in addition to the usage of chemical products like pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities in such areas. Furthermore, the (outdoor-indoor-transport) MEs indicate that the transport and indoor MEs have similar levels of suspended fine particulates, while outdoor MEs are less polluted. Studies based on the personal exposure to PM_2.5 were generally applied on specific and limited places such as schools, workplaces, or residences. The study aims to shed light on the modern method in an attempt to estimate the personal exposure to PM_2.5 and to inspire similar studies to achieve the maximum efficiency.

Environmental Benefits and Energy Savings from Gas Radiant Heaters’ Flue-Gas Heat Recovery

This paper demonstrates the need and potential for using waste heat recovery (WHR) systems from infrared gas radiant heaters, which are typical heat sources in large halls, due to the increasing energy-saving requirements for buildings in the EU and the powerful and wide-spread development of the e-commerce market. The types of gas radiant heaters are discussed and the classification of WHR systems from these devices is performed. The article also presents for the first time our innovative solution, not yet available on the market, for the recovery of heat from the exhaust gases of ceramic infrared heaters. The energy analysis for an industrial hall shows that this solution allows for environmental benefits at different levels, depending on the gas infrared heater efficiency, by reducing the amount of fuel and emissions for domestic hot water (DHW) preparation (36.8%, 15.4% and 5.4%, respectively, in the case of low-, standard- and high-efficiency infrared heaters). These reductions, considering both DHW preparation and hall heating, are 16.1%, 7.6% and 3.0%, respectively. The key conclusion is that the innovative solution can spectacularly improve the environmental effect and achieve the highest level of fuel savings in existing buildings that are heated with radiant heaters with the lowest radiant efficiency.

Spatial variations of PM2.5 emissions and social welfare induced by clean heating transition: A gridded cost-benefit analysis

Clean heating (CH) is regard as a key strategy to address the serious air pollution problem in northern China. A "one-fit-all" CH strategy will harm social welfare and engender resistance, due to the differences in heating habits and residents' income between urban and rural areas. To solve this problem, a 5 km × 5 km gridded cost-benefit analysis model for CH is build. Taking the case city as an example, an improved CH solution integrating multiple heat sources is proposed. By utilizing ISH resources, which are low-cost and low-emission-intensity, the improved solution reduces heating-induced PM_2.5 emissions to one-fifth, and achieves higher net social benefits than existing CH strategies. Moreover, the spatial distributions of PM_2.5 emission reductions and indoor and outdoor health benefits induced by CH strategy, including coal-to-gas/electricity and the improved strategy we propose, are simulated; revealing that the spillover effects of pollutants make CH will somewhat inevitably bring about a transfer of social welfare from rural areas to urban areas, but this can be compensated by opposite direction subsidies.

Prospects of Using Gas Hydrates in Power Plants

By adding water to fuels, several objectives are pursued, with the main ones being to stabilize combustion, minimize the anthropogenic gaseous emissions, homogenize and stabilize the fuel, as well as improve its fire and explosion safety. Water can be injected into the furnace as droplets or vapor and introduced as part of fuel samples. Water often serves as a coupling or carrier medium for the delivery of the main fuel components. In this paper, we compare the combustion behaviors of high-potential slurry fuels and gas hydrates. We also analyze the contribution of in slurries and gas hydrates to the combustion process. The values of relative combustion efficiency indicators are determined for gas hydrates and slurry fuels. The conditions are identified in which these fuels can be burned effectively in power plants. The research findings can be used to rationalize the alternative ways of using water resources, i.e., gas hydrate powder and promising composite fuel droplets. The results can also help predict the conditions for the shortest possible ignition delay, as well as effective combustion of gas hydrates as the most environmentally friendly new-generation alternative fuel.

Evaluation of Implementation of Biomass and Solar Resources by Energy Systems in the Coal-Mining Areas of Spain

Energy demand is steadily growing as society becomes more industrialised. Renewable energy sources (RES) have long been used for various applications by thermal energy systems in the European Union (EU). Biomass and solar energy represent important RES in the development of energy transition in some regions such as coal-mining areas of Europe. Bioenergy is a key renewable energy storage mechanism for solar energy which, when combined, can tackle many of the barriers to the use of solar energy. Against this background, this study evaluates the potential implementation of both biomass and solar energy for energy production in coal-mining areas in Spain as a direct alternative to coal. The shown methodology relies on a comprehensive analysis of existing resources and their conversion to thermal energy from a multi-parametric point of view. The obtained results show that the solar–biomass combination can be used for thermal energy systems as a challenging option. The theoretical total hybrid-modular systems if implemented in the study area are equivalent to 1165 MWth and supply thermal energy for 170,000 single-family houses.

Fuzzy Ensemble of Multi-Criteria Decision Making Methods for Heating Energy Transition in Danish Households

More than 110 countries, including 500 cities worldwide, have set the goal of reaching carbon neutrality. Heating contributes to most of the residential energy consumption and carbon emissions. The green energy transition of fossil-based heating systems is needed to reach the emission goals. However, heating systems vary in energy source, heating technology, equipment location, and these complexities make it challenging for households to compare heating systems and make decisions. Hence, a decision support tool that provides a generalized ranking of individual heating alternatives is proposed for households as decision makers to identify the optimal choice. This paper presents an analysis of 13 heating alternatives and 19 quantitative criteria in technological, environmental, and financial aspects, combines ideal solution-based multi-criteria decision making with 6 weighting methods and 4 normalization methods, and introduces ensemble learning with a fuzzy membership function derived from Cauchy distribution to finalize the ultimate ranking. The robustness of the proposed method is verified by three sensitive analyses from different aspects. Air-to-water heat pump, solar heating and direct district heating are the top three rankings in the final result under Danish national average data. A framework is designed to guide decision makers to apply this ranking guideline with their practical, feasible situations.

Environmental impacts of solar photovoltaic systems: A critical review of recent progress and future outlook

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are regarded as clean and sustainable sources of energy. Although the operation of PV systems exhibits minimal pollution during their lifetime, the probable environmental impacts of such systems from manufacturing until disposal cannot be ignored. The production of hazardous contaminates, water resources pollution, and emissions of air pollutants during the manufacturing process as well as the impact of PV installations on land use are important environmental factors to consider. The present study aims at developing a comprehensive analysis of all possible environmental challenges as well as presenting novel design proposals to mitigate and solve the aforementioned environmental problems. The emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) from various PV systems were also explored and compared with fossil fuel energy resources. The results revealed that the negative environmental impacts of PV systems could be substantially mitigated using optimized design, development of novel materials, minimize the use of hazardous materials, recycling whenever possible, and careful site selection. Such mitigation actions will reduce the emissions of GHG to the environment, decrease the accumulation of solid wastes, and preserve valuable water resources. The carbon footprint emission from PV systems was found to be in the range of 14-73 g CO₂-eq/kWh, which is 10 to 53 orders of magnitude lower than emission reported from the burning of oil (742 g CO₂-eq/kWh from oil). It was concluded that the carbon footprint of the PV system could be decreased further by one order of magnitude using novel manufacturing materials. Recycling solar cell materials can also contribute up to a 42% reduction in GHG emissions. The present study offers a valuable management strategy that can be used to improve the sustainability of PV manufacturing processes, improve its economic value, and mitigate its negative impacts on the environment.
