Contrary effects of flow intermittence and land uses on organic matter decomposition in a Mediterranean river basin

A comprehensive spatial analysis of invertebrate diversity within intermittent stream networks: Responses to drying and land use

Freshwater ecosystems are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which affect both diversity and ecosystem functioning. Furthermore, these ecosystems face additional threats from human activities, such as changes in land use, leading to water pollution and habitat degradation. Intermittent streams represent nearly half of all fluvial systems and support a rich diversity adapted to cope with drying. This study examines the impact of drying and different land uses on the taxonomic and functional diversity of aquatic invertebrates in a Mediterranean intermittent stream network. By sampling 16 reaches seasonally, we hypothesised that longer dry-phase duration and agriculture would both reduce α-diversity, with drying dominating impacts on β-diversity over agricultural practices. We anticipated that drying and agriculture would alter species and trait compositions, favouring desiccation-tolerant and generalist taxa. Drying adversely affected the taxonomic and functional α-diversity of aquatic invertebrates, while it positively influenced β-diversity. Land use only affected α-diversity. Specifically, habitat heterogeneity and increased water nutrient levels within the stream network correlated positively with invertebrate diversity. However, the negative effects of drying were less pronounced in upstream forested regions with high habitat heterogeneity compared to downstream areas influenced by agriculture. Our research highlights the importance of preserving natural and forested streams in intermittent networks, particularly in headwater regions, thus facilitating recolonization when flow is restored throughout the stream network.

Litter quality and climate regulate the effect of invertebrates on litter decomposition in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems: A global meta-analysis

Although the exclusion effects of invertebrate decomposers on litter decomposition have been extensively studied in different experimental contexts, a thorough comparison of the exclusion effects of invertebrate decomposers with different body sizes on litter decomposition and its possible regulatory factors in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is still lacking. Here, through a meta-analysis of 1207 pairs of observations from 110 studies in terrestrial ecosystems and 473 pairs of observations from 60 studies in aquatic ecosystems, we found that invertebrate exclusion reduced litter decomposition rates by 36 % globally, 30 % in terrestrial ecosystems, and 44 % in aquatic ecosystems. At the global scale, the exclusion effects of macroinvertebrates and mesoinvertebrates on litter decomposition rates (reduced by 38 % and 36 %, respectively) were greater than those of the combination of macroinvertebrates and mesoinvertebrates (reduced by 30 %). In terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, the effects of invertebrate exclusion on litter decomposition rates were mainly regulated by climate and initial litter quality, but the effects of invertebrate exclusion with different body sizes were regulated differently by climate, initial litter quality, and abiotic environmental variables. These findings will help us better understand the role of invertebrate decomposers in litter decomposition, especially for invertebrate decomposers with different body sizes, and underscore the need to incorporate invertebrate decomposers with different body sizes into dynamic models of litter decomposition to examine the potential effects and regulatory mechanisms of land-water-atmosphere carbon fluxes.

Assessment of Water Quality Indicators in the Orla River Nitrate Vulnerable Zone in the Context of New Threats in Poland

Currently, one of the most serious threats to the environment in rural areas is industrial livestock production, which generates a significant amount of chemical and biological pollution. It causes pollution of waters, affects biodiversity, and has an impact on the climate. Research was carried out in the Orla River (Poland) with a catchment area of 1.546 km2. Studies were concentrated on pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and other factors. Analyses were conducted on the area of livestock buildings in two buffer zones, 1 and 3 km wide, respectively, and included the abundance of phosphorus and potassium in soil as well as its potential impact on the quality of river water. Seasonal variability was observed for nutrients. In the winter period the highest concentrations of nitrates were observed, while in the summer this was the case for phosphates and total phosphorus. The highest concentrations of nutrients occurred in 2012, particularly total and ammonium nitrogen. There was a positive correlation between livestock building area and parameters such as ammonium, organic, and total nitrogen in the 1 km buffer, as well as organic and total nitrogen, potassium and dissolved oxygen in the 3 km buffer. Negative correlation in the case of pH was observed in both buffer zones. Relationships were found between the area of livestock buildings and parameters analyzed during seasons.
