Abstract
In recent years, research on air pollution in cooking environments has gained increasing attention, particularly studies related to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution. Hence, it is crucial and urgent to conduct a comprehensive review of research findings and further evaluate their carcinogenic risks. This study adopts a comprehensive literature review approach, systematically integrating and deeply analyzing the conclusions and data from 62 selected relevant studies. It focuses on the impact of different factors on PAHs concentrations, considers the indoor-outdoor PAHs concentration ratio, and conducts carcinogenic risk assessments for PAHs. The results show that Africa has the highest average PAHs pollution concentration globally at 14.74μg/m³, exceeding that of other continents by 1.5 to 160.9 times. Among various influencing factors, fuel type has the most significant impact on PAHs concentrations. Existing research data indicate that cooking with charcoal as fuel produces the highest PAHs concentration at 223.52μg/m³, with high molecular weight PAHs accounting for 58.16%, significantly higher than when using clean energy. Furthermore, efficient ventilation systems have been proven to substantially reduce PAHs concentrations, with a reduction rate of up to 88.1%. However, cooking methods and food types also have a small but non-negligible impact on PAHs production. Using mild cooking methods such as steaming and selecting low-fat foods can also reduce PAHs to some extent. Additionally, through the analysis of the Indoor/Outdoor ratio, it was found that cooking is the primary source of indoor pollution, and the average concentration of PAHs in cooking environments in Asia and Africa is much higher than in Europe and America. The Total Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (TILCR) exceeds 10⁻⁴, indicating a high level of carcinogenic risk.

Abstract
In recent times, biochar has emerged as a novel approach for environmental remediation due to its exceptional adsorption capacity, attributed to its porous structure formed by the pyrolysis of biomass at elevated temperatures in oxygen-restricted conditions. This characteristic has driven its widespread use in environmental remediation to remove pollutants. When biochar is introduced into ecosystems, it usually changes the makeup of microbial communities by offering a favorable habitat. Its porous structure creates a protective environment that shields them from external pressures. Consequently, microorganisms adhering to biochar surfaces exhibit increased resilience to environmental conditions, thereby enhancing their capacity to degrade pollutants. During this process, pollutants are broken down into smaller molecules through the collaborative efforts of biochar surface groups and microorganisms. Biochar is also often used in conjunction with composting techniques to enhance compost quality by improving aeration and serving as a carrier for slow-release fertilizers. The utilization of biochar to support sustainable agricultural practices and combat environmental contamination is a prominent area of current research. This study aims to examine the beneficial impacts of biochar application on the absorption and breakdown of contaminants in environmental and agricultural settings, offering insights into its optimization for enhanced efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, many emerging polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been found to be widely present in the environment. However, little has been reported about their toxicity, particularly in relation to CYP1A1. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the toxicity of naphtho[2,1-a]pyrene (N21aP) and elucidate the mechanism underlying N21aP-induced expression of CYP1A1. METHODS The concentration and sources of N21aP were detected and analyzed by gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and diagnostic ratio analysis. Then the effects of CYP1A1 on the toxicity of N21aP were conducted in male wild-type (WT) and Cyp1a1 knockout mice exposed to N21aP (0.02, 0.2, and 2 mg / kg ) through intratracheal instillation. Further, the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway was examined through luciferase and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays. N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A ) modification levels were measured on global RNA and specifically on CYP1A1 mRNA using dot blotting and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation-quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (MeRIP qRT-PCR), with validation by m 6 A inhibitors, DAA and SAH. m 6 A sites on CYP1A1 were identified by bioinformatics and luciferase assays, and CYP1A1 mRNA's interaction with IGF2BP3 was confirmed by RNA pull-down, luciferase, and RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. RESULTS N21aP was of the same environmental origin as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) but was more stably present in the environment. N21aP could be metabolically activated by CYP1A1 to produce epoxides, causing DNA damage and further leading to lung inflammation. Importantly, in addition to the classical AhR pathway (i.e., BaP), N21aP also induced CYP1A1 expression with a posttranscriptional modification of m 6 A in CYP1A1 mRNA via the METTL14-IGF2BP3-CYP1A1 axis. Specifically, in the two recognition sites of METTL14 on the CYP1A1 mRNA transcript (position at 2700 and 5218), a methylation site (position at 5218) in the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) was recognized by IGF2BP3, enhanced the stability of CYP1A1 mRNA, and finally resulted in an increase in CYP1A1 expression. DISCUSSION This study systematically demonstrated that in addition to AhR-mediated transcriptional regulation, N21aP, had a new additional mechanism of m 6 A -mediated posttranscriptional modification, jointly contributing to CYP1A1 expression. Given that PAHs are the metabolic substrates of CYP1A1, this study not only helps to understand the significance of environment-genetic interactions for the toxicity of PAHs but also helps to better understand the health risks of the emerging PAHs at environmental exposure levels. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP14055.

Abstract
The exposure to cooking organic aerosols (COA) is closely related to people's daily lives. Despite extensive investigations into COA's model compounds like oleic acid, the intricacies of heterogeneous ozonolysis of real COA and the effects of ambient conditions like humidity remain elusive. In this work, the ozonolysis of COA proxies from heated peanut oil emissions was investigated using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFTS) spectroscopy, and proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS). We found that humidity hinders the reaction between ozone and CC double bonds due to the competitive adsorption of water and ozone on COA. Although visible light has little influence on the ozonolysis of COA in the absence of humidity, the ozonolytic CO production is significantly promoted by visible light in the presence of humidity. It may be attributed to the formation of water-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS, mainly HO•) from the photosensitization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in COA. We also found that humidity can enhance the depolymerization of carboxylic acid dimers and hydrolysis of intrinsic acetals in the COA. Moreover, humidity promotes the release of VOCs during both the dark and light ozonolysis of COA. This work reveals the important roles of humidity-responsive and photo-responsive components in COA during its ozonolysis, and the change in VOC release may guide the control of human VOC exposure in indoor air.

Abstract
Environmental benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and itsmetabolite benzo(a)pyrene-7, 8-dihydrodiol-9, 10-epoxide (BPDE), classic endocrine disrupting chemical and persistent organic pollutant, could cause miscarriage. However, the detailed mechanisms are still largely unclear and should be further explored. In this study, we discovered that exposure of trophoblast cells with BPDE could suppressed cell invasion/migration by inhibiting MEST/VIM (Vimentin) pathway. Moreover, BPDE exposure also increased lnc-HZ01 expression level, which further inhibited MEST/VIM pathway and then suppressed invasion/migration. Knockdown of lnc-HZ01 or overexpression of MEST could efficiently rescue invasion/migration of BPDE-exposed Swan 71 cells. Furthermore, lnc-HZ01 was highly expressed and MEST/VIM were lowly expressed in recurrent miscarriage (RM) villous tissues compared with healthy control (HC) group. Finally, we also found that BaP exposure inhibited murine Mest/Vim pathway in placental tissues and induced miscarriage in BaP-exposed mice. Therefore, the regulatory mechanisms were similar in BPDE-exposed human trophoblast cells, RM villous tissues, and placental tissues of BaP-exposed mice with miscarriage, building a bridge to connect BaP/BPDE exposure, invasion/migration, and miscarriage. This study provided novel insights in the toxicological effects and molecular mechanisms of BaP/BPDE-induced miscarriage, which is helpful for better elucidating the toxicological risks of BaP/BPDE on female reproduction.

Abstract
The air fryer utilizes heated air rather than hot oil to achieve frying, eliminating the need for cooking oil, rendering it a healthier cooking method than traditional frying and baking. However, there is limited evidence supporting that the air fryer could effectively reduce the level of food-derived carcinogen. In this study, we compared the concentration of Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a typical carcinogen, in beef patties cooked using an air fryer and an oven, under different cooking conditions, including temperatures (140 °C, 160 °C, 180 °C, and 200 °C), times (9, 14, and 19 min), and oil added or not. The adjusted linear regression analysis revealed that the BaP concentration in beef cooked in the air fryer was 22.667 (95% CI: 15.984, 29.349) ng/kg lower than that in beef cooked in the oven. Regarding the air fryer, the BaP concentration in beef cooked without oil brushing was below the detection limit, and it was significantly lower than in beef cooked with oil brushing (p < 0.001). Therefore, cooking beef in the air fryer can effectively reduce BaP concentration, particularly due to the advantage of oil-free cooking, suggesting that the air fryer represents a superior option for individuals preparing meat at high temperatures.

Abstract
The cooking fumes generated from thermal cooking oils contains various of hazardous components and shows deleterious health effects. The edible oil refining is designed to improve the oil quality and safety. While, there remains unknown about the connections between the characteristics and health risks of the cooking fumes and oils with different refining levels. In this study, the hazardous compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and particulate matter (PM) in the fumes emitted from heated soybean oils with different refining levels were characterized, and their health risks were assessed. Results demonstrated that the concentration range of aldehydes and ketones (from 328.06 ± 24.64 to 796.52 ± 29.67 μg/m3), PAHs (from 4.39 ± 0.19 to 7.86 ± 0.51 μg/m3), and PM (from 0.36 ± 0.14 to 5.08 ± 0.15 mg/m3) varied among soybean oil with different refining levels, respectively. The neutralized oil showed the highest concentration of aldehydes and ketones, whereas the refined oil showed the lowest. The highest concentration levels of PAHs and PM were observed in fumes emitted from crude oil. A highly significant (p < 0.001) positive correlation between the acid value of cooking oil and the concentrations of PM was found, suggesting that removing free fatty acids is critical for mitigating PM concentration in cooking fumes. Additionally, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values of PAHs and aldehydes were 5.60 × 10-4 to 8.66 × 10-5 and 5.60 × 10-4 to 8.66 × 10-5, respectively, which were substantially higher than the acceptable levels (1.0 × 10-6) established by US EPA. The present study quantifies the impact of edible oil refining on hazardous compound emissions and provides a theoretical basis for controlling the health risks of cooking fumes via precise edible oil processing.

Abstract
Exposure to a total of 51 targeted and non-targeted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated and alkylated derivatives associated with size-segregated aerosol was investigated in rural kitchens using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), mixed biomass (MB) and firewood (FW) fuels in northeastern India. The averaged PM10-associated parent-, alkylated-, and oxygenated-PAHs concentrations increased notably from LPG (257, 54, and 116 ng m-3) to MB (838, 119, and 272 ng m-3) to FW-using kitchens (2762, 225, and 554 ng m-3), respectively. PAHs were preferentially associated with the PM1 fraction with contributions increasing from 80 % in LPG to 86 % in MB and 90 % in FW-using kitchens, which in turn was dominated by <0.25 μm particles (54-75 % of the total). A clear profile of enrichment of low-molecular weight PAHs in cleaner fuels (LPG) and a contrasting enrichment of high-molecular weight PAHs in biomass-based fuels was noted. The averaged internal dose of Benzo[a]pyrene equivalent was the lowest in the case of LPG (19 ng m-3), followed by MB (161 ng m-3) and the highest in FW users (782 ng m-3). Estimation of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) from PAH exposure revealed extremely high cancer risk in biomass users (factors of 8-40) compared to LPG. The potential years of life lost (PYLL) and PYLL rate averaged across kitchen categories was higher for lung cancer (PYLL: 10.55 ± 1.04 years; PYLL rate: 204 ± 426) compared to upper respiratory tract cancer (PYLL: 10.02 ± 0.05 years; PYLL rate: 4 ± 7), and the PYLL rates for biomass users were higher by factors of 9-56 as compared to LPG users. These findings stress the need for accelerated governmental intervention to ensure a quick transition from traditional biomass-based fuels to cleaner alternatives for the rural population of northeastern India.

Abstract
Cooking emission is known to be a significant anthropogenic source of air pollution in urban areas, but its toxicities are still unclear. This study addressed the toxicities of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and gaseous organics by combining chemical fingerprinting analysis with cellular assessments. The cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species activity of gaseous organics were ∼1.9 and ∼8.3 times higher than those of PM2.5, respectively. Moreover, these values of per unit mass PM2.5 were ∼7.1 and ∼15.7 times higher than those collected from ambient air in Shanghai. The total oleic acid equivalent quantities for carcinogenic and toxic respiratory effects of gaseous organics, as estimated using predictive models based on quantitative structure-property relationships, were 1686 ± 803 and 430 ± 176 μg/mg PM2.5, respectively. Both predicted toxicities were higher than those of particulate organics, consistent with cellular assessment. These health risks are primarily attributed to the high relative content and toxic equivalency factor of the organic compounds present in the gas phase, including 7,9-di-tert-butyl-1-oxaspiro(4,5)deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, and 2-phenoxyethoxybenzene. Furthermore, these compounds and fatty acids were identified as prominent chemical markers of cooking-related emissions. The obtained results highlight the importance of control measures for cooking-emitted gaseous organics to reduce the personal exposure risks.

Abstract
Air pollution is one of the leading causes of overall mortality globally. Cooking emissions are a major source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). However, studies on their potential perturbations on the nasal microbiota as well as their association with respiratory health are lacking. This pilot study aims to assess the environmental air quality among occupational cooks and its associations with nasal microbiota and respiratory symptoms. A total of 20 cooks (exposed) and 20 unexposed controls (mainly office workers), were recruited in Singapore from 2019 to 2021. Information on sociodemographic factors, cooking methods, and self-reported respiratory symptoms were collected using a questionnaire. Personal PM2.5 concentrations and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were measured using portable sensors and filter samplers. DNA was extracted from nasal swabs and sequenced using 16s sequencing. Alpha-diversity and beta-diversity were calculated, and between-group variation analysis of species was performed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between exposure groups and self-reported respiratory symptoms. Higher daily mean PM2.5 (P = 2 × 10-7) and environmental ROS exposure (P = 3.25 × 10-7) were observed in the exposed group. Alpha diversity of the nasal microbiota between the two groups was not significantly different. However, beta diversity was significantly different (unweighted UniFrac P = 1.11 × 10-5, weighted UniFrac P = 5.42 × 10-6) between the two exposure groups. In addition, certain taxa of bacteria were slightly more abundant in the exposed group compared to unexposed controls. There were no significant associations between the exposure groups and self-reported respiratory symptoms. In summary, the exposed group had higher PM2.5 and ROS exposure levels and altered nasal microbiotas as compared to unexposed controls, though further studies are required to replicate these findings in a larger population.

Abstract
Cooking events can generate household air pollutants that deteriorate indoor air quality (IAQ), which poses a threat to human health and well-being. In this study, the emission characteristics and emission factors (EFs) of air pollutants of different meats (beef, lamb, chicken, pork, and fish) cooked by a novel oil-free process and common with-oil processes were investigated. Oil-free cooking tends to emit lower total volatile organic compound (TVOC) levels and fewer submicron smoke particles and can reduce the intake of fat and calories. However, TVOC emissions during oil-free cooking were significantly different, and the lamb EFs were nearly 8 times higher than those during with-oil cooking. The particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (ƩPPAH) and benzo(a)pyrene-equivalent (ƩBaPeq) EFs during with-oil cooking ranged from 76.1 to 140.5 ng/g and 7.7-12.4 ng/g, respectively, while those during oil-free cooking ranged from 41.0 to 176.6 ng/g and 5.4-47.6 ng/g, respectively. The ƩPPAH EFs of chicken, pork, and fish were lower during oil-free cooking than during cooking with oil. Furthermore, the ƩBaPeq EFs of beef, chicken, pork, and fish were lower during oil-free cooking than during cooking with oil. Therefore, it is recommended to use the oil-free method to cook chicken, pork, and fish to reduce ƩPPAH and ƩBaPeq emissions, but not recommended to cook lamb due to the increase of ƩBaPeq emissions. The with-oil uncovered cooking EFs of aldehydes ranged from 3.77 to 22.09 μg/g, and those of oil-free cooking ranged from 4.88 to 19.96 μg/g. The aldehyde EFs were lower during oil-free covered cooking than with-oil uncovered cooking for beef, chicken, and fish. This study provides a better realizing of new cooking approaches for the reduction of cooking-induced emission, but further research on the effects of food composition (moisture and fat) and characteristics is needed.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common air pollutants worldwide, associated with industrial processes. In the general population, both modeling and field studies revealed a positive correlation between air PAH concentrations and urinary PAH metabolite levels. Many countries lack population urinary data that correspond to local PAH air concentrations. Thus, we proposed a scoring-based approximate approach to investigating that correlation in selected countries, hypothesizing that PAH air concentrations in selected regions could represent the national air quality influenced by industrial emission and further correlate to PAH internal exposure in the general population. This research compiled 85 peer-reviewed journal articles and 9 official monitoring datasets/reports covering 34 countries, 16 of which with both atmospheric PAH data and human biomonitoring data. For the air pollution score (AirS), Egypt had the highest AirS at 0.94 and Pakistan was at the bottom of the score ranking at -1.95, as well as the median in the UK (AirS: 0.50). For the population exposure score (ExpS), China gained the top ExpS at 0.44 and Spain was with the lowest ExpS of -1.52, with the median value in Italy (ExpS: 0.43). Through the correlation analysis, atmospheric PAHs and their corresponding urinary metabolites provided a positive relationship to a diverse extent, indicating that the related urinary metabolites could reflect the population's exposure to specific atmospheric PAHs. The findings also revealed that in the 16 selected countries, AirS indexes were positively correlated with ExpS indexes, implying that higher PAH levels in the air may lead to elevated metabolite urinary levels in general populations. Furthermore, lowering PAH air concentrations could reduce population internal PAH exposure, implying that strict PAH air regulation or emission would reduce health risks for general populations. Notably, this study was an ideal theoretical research based on proposed assumptions to some extent. Further research should focus on understanding exposure pathways, protecting vulnerable populations, and improving the PAH database to optimize PAH pollution control.

Abstract
Long-term atmospheric quality monitoring of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was performed in Wuxi from 2016 to 2021. In total, 504 atmospheric PM2.5 samples were collected, and PM2.5-bound 16 PAHs were detected. The PM2.5 and ∑PAHs level decreased annually from 2016 to 2021, from 64.3 to 34.0 μg/m3 and 5.27 to 4.22 ng/m3, respectively. The benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) levels of 42% of the monitoring days in 2017 exceeded the recommended European Union (EU) health-based standard of 1 ng/m3. Five- and six-ring PAHs were found, including benz[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene (Bkf), BaP, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene, which were the dominant components (indicating a prominent petroleum, biomass, and coal combustion contribution) using molecular diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization analysis. Moreover, PM2.5 and PAHs were significantly negatively associated with local precipitation over a period of six years. Statistically significant temporal and spatial distribution differences of PM2.5, and ∑PAHs were also found. The toxicity equivalent quotient (TEQ) of total PAHs was 0.70, and the TEQ of BaP (0.178) was the highest, followed by that of Bkf (0.090), dibenz[a,h]anthracene (Dah) (0.048), and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (0.034). The medians of the incremental lifetime cancer risk for long-term exposure to PAHs were 2.74E-8, 1.98E-8, and 1.71E-7 for children, teenagers, and adults, respectively, indicating that the carcinogenic risk of PAHs pollution in air was acceptable to local residents in this area. Sensitivity analysis revealed that BaP, Bkf, and Dah significantly contributed to carcinogenic toxicity. This research provides comprehensive statistics on the local air persistent organic pollutants profile, helps to identify the principal pollution source and compounds, and contributes to the prevention of regional air pollution. Abstract
Environmental Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and its ultimate metabolite BPDE (benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide) are typical persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disrupting chemicals. BaP/BPDE exposure might cause human trophoblast cell dysfunctions and induce miscarriage. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. In this study, we found that BPDE exposure induced human trophoblast cell pyroptosis by up-regulating NLRP3/Caspase1/GSDMD pathway. We also identified that lnc-HZ14 was highly expressed in BPDE-exposed trophoblast cells and in recurrent miscarriage (RM) vs healthy control (HC) villous tissues. Lnc-HZ14 promoted trophoblast cell pyroptosis by promoting IRF1-mediated ZBP1 transcription, increasing METTL3-mediated m6A methylation on NLRP3 mRNA and its stability, and also enhancing ZBP1/NLRP3 protein interactions. Knockdown of lnc-HZ14/ZBP1/NLRP3 axis could efficiently alleviate BPDE-induced trophoblast cell pyroptosis. Higher level of pyroptosis, as indicated by the up-regulation of lnc-HZ14/ZBP1/NLRP3 axis, was found in RM vs HC villous tissues. In BaP-exposed mouse model, BaP exposure induced placental tissue pyroptosis and miscarriage by up-regulating murine Zbp1/Nlrp3 axis, and knockdown of Nlrp3 could efficiently reduce placenta pyroptosis and alleviate BaP-induced mouse miscarriage. Serum IL-1β protein level might act as a promising indicator to predict the risk of miscarriage. These findings provided new insights into BaP/BPDE-induced trophoblast cell pyroptosis and miscarriage and might be helpful for further assessment of the toxicological effects of BaP/BPDE on the female reproduction.

Abstract
As a carrier of toxic substances, household dust has a great impact on human health. Here we collected 73 household dust samples from 27 provinces and 1 municipality in China to investigate the levels, spatial distribution, sources, and carcinogenic risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total concentrations of 14 detected PAHs (∑14 PAHs) ranged from 3.72 to 60,885 ng g-1. High ∑14 PAHs were found in Northeast and Southwest China. High molecular weights (HMW) PAHs (4-6 rings) were predominant PAHs in most dust samples, accounting for 93.6% of ∑14 PAHs. Household fuel, cooking frequency, air conditioning, and smoking were the main factors influencing PAH concentrations in household dust. Principal component analysis model indicated that fossil combustion (81.5%) and biomass combustion and vehicle exhaust (8.1%) are the primary sources of PAHs. Positive matrix factorization model suggested that household cooking and heating contributed about 70% of ∑14 PAHs, and smoking contributed another 30%. The values of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent in rural dust were found to be higher than those in urban dust. The sum of toxic equivalents (TEQs) of 14 PAHs were in range of 0.372-7241 ng g-1, in which 7 HMW PAHs accounted for 98.0 ± 1.98% of the total TEQs. Monte Carlo Simulation showed a low to moderate potential carcinogenic risk of PAHs in household dusts. This study documents comprehensive information on human exposure to PAHs in household dust at a national-scale.

Abstract
In indoor environments, cooking is a major contributor to indoor air pollution releasing potentially harmful toxic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In our study, Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegata' plants were applied to monitor PAH emission rates and patterns in previously selected rural Hungarian kitchens. Concentration and profile of accumulated PAHs could be well explained by cooking methods and materials used in each kitchen. Accumulation of 6-ring PAHs was characteristic in the only kitchen which frequently used deep frying. It also should be emphasized that applicability of C. comosum as indoor biomonitor was assessed. The plant has proven a good monitor organism as it accumulated both LMW and HMW PAHs.

Abstract
This study characterized the parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gaseous and particulate emissions from the in situ burning (ISB) of oils. The experimental results indicate that the burning of the heavy oil produced the most PAH emissions because of its longest burning time. In addition, the parent PAHs mainly exist in the particulate phase, while alkylated PAHs mostly accumulate in the gaseous phase. In particular, the diagnostic-ratios of PAHs with great stability in both gaseous and particulate emissions from ISB are identified by comparing the laboratory and field data. The presences of bell-, slope- and V-shaped distribution patterns of alkylated PAHs in the emissions precisely indicate their sources to be petrogenic and pyrogenic processes occurring during ISB. The formation of 2-methylanthracene during ISB is confirmed. The overall findings are expected to provide a prospective protocol to characterize PAH pollution from ISB emissions in case of oil spills.

Abstract
Household animal fat has been linked to increased incidence of cancers compared with vegetable fat. However, few epidemiological studies have associated these two cooking oil types with precancerous genotoxic effects, such as occurrence of micronuclei (MN). This study aimed to explore the association between oral MN frequency and household cooking oil type and whether the association can be attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We collected information about individual cooking oil use, measured genotoxic effects by MN tests and urinary PAHs metabolites (OHPAHs) in 245 nonsmokers. The associations between household cooking oil type and MN frequency and OHPAHs were analyzed using generalized linear models (GLMs) and logistic regression models, evaluating odds ratios and coefficient (95% confidence intervals) (ORs, 95% Cls; β, 95% Cls). The odds of animal fat consumers, rather than vegetable fat consumers, was positively associated with higher MN frequency (OR = 1.94, P < 0.05). The associations were discovered in participants only using kitchen ventilation (OR = 2.04, P < 0.05). Animal fat consumers had higher total OHPAHs than vegetable fat consumers (1.58 ± 0.22 mg/mol, Cr vs 1.20 ± 0.12 mg/mol, Cr; P = 0.028). Significant correlations were observed between total OHPAHs quartiles and increased MN frequency (β = 0.38, P-trend = 0.026). After stratifying by household cooking oil type, sensitivity analyses showed that the positive association between total OHPAHs quartiles and increased MN frequency was only observed in animal fat consumers (β = 0.61, P-trend = 0.030). In conclusion, usage of household animal fat was associated with an increased odds of oral MN frequency in Chinese nonsmokers and the odds correlated with increased PAHs exposure. This finding supplemented evidence associating cooking oil type with genotoxic effects and explained its association with PAHs exposure.
