How good is good ecological status? A test across river typologies, diatom indices and biological elements

Benthic diatoms as indicators of water quality in Sharda (Kali), a transboundary Himalayan River

Bioassessment studies in river systems of India are rather scarce and most of the monitoring programmes still rely on the traditional physical and chemical analysis. We explored the biomonitoring potential of benthic diatoms from the Sharda (Kali) river in the Himalayas, which is due interlinking with the Yamuna River under the National River Linking Programme (NRLP) in India. Seventeen sites along the Sharda were sampled in November 2022 for the analysis of 14 physical and chemical variables and benthic diatoms. Hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis (HACA) and principal component analysis (PCA) of the physico-chemical data set revealed two major groups of sites; the majorly unpolluted sites at higher elevations of Kumaun Himalayas (KH) and the low or moderately polluted sites of Terai Plains (TP) at lower elevations. Application of Water Quality Index (WQI) assigned a good water quality class (B) to all selected sites. A total of 31 genera including 107 species of diatoms were recorded during the present study. Achnanthes pseudoswazi, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Achnanthidium pusillum, Geissleria decussis, and Reimeria sinuata were the most abundant forms from KH whereas Gomphonema acuminatum, Cymbella excisa, Cocconeis pediculus, Nitzschia linearis, and Navicula angusta were the dominant forms recorded from TP. A decrease in diatom diversity was observed from KH to TP sites due to hydrogeomorphological changes and human interventions. Significant differences (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01) between diatom diversity index scores was observed between KH and TP sites. Diversity indices correlated significantly with important water quality variables. The results of the diatom indices such as Trophic Diatom Index (TDI), Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index (IPS), Generic Diatom Index (IDG), and Louis Leclercq Diatom Index (IDSE) corroborated well with the recorded physicochemical variables and WQI values. IPS diatom index exhibited better resolution than WQI with reference to categorization of sites and subsequent establishment of ecological status. IPS was found to be the most suitable index and could be utilized for a pre-linkage ecological status establishment for the Sharda River. However, weak correlations of diatom indices and water quality variables along with low percentage of taxa included for computation of diatom indices reiterates the importance of establishment of region specific autecological preferences of diatoms and subsequent formulation of a customized diatom index for the Sharda River system.

Different facets of alpha and beta diversity of benthic diatoms along stream watercourse in a large near-natural catchment

Understanding the processes and mechanisms that shape the distribution patterns and variations of biodiversity along spatial gradients continues to be a priority for ecological research. We focused on the biodiversity of benthic diatom communities within a large near-natural watershed. The objectives are: (1) to explore the overall spatial patterns of benthic diatom biodiversity; (2) to investigate the effects associated with watercourse position and environmental variables, as well as both common and rare species on two facets (i.e., taxonomic and functional) of alpha and beta diversity; and (3) to unveil the mechanisms underlying their spatial variations. Alpha diversity indices along the stream watercourse showed a clear increasing trend from upstream to downstream sites. Results of random forest regression identified conductivity as the primary factor influencing functional alpha diversity, while elevation emerged as the predominant factor for taxonomic alpha diversity. Beta diversity partitioning revealed that taxonomic beta diversity generally exceeded functional beta diversity. These diversity measures exhibited different patterns along the watercourse position: taxonomic beta diversity remained relatively consistent along the watercourse, whereas functional total beta diversity and its two components of middle stream sites were lower than those of upstream and downstream sites. Functional beta diversity was sustained by dominant and common species, while rare species made significant contributions to taxonomic beta diversity. Both taxonomic and functional beta diversity and its components displayed a stronger influence from spatial factors than from local environmental, geo-climatic, and nutrient variables. Collectively, taxonomic and functional alpha and beta diversity demonstrated distinct responses to the main environmental gradients and spatial factors within our catchment, highlighting their different insights into diatom diversity. Furthermore, research is required to assess the generalizability of our findings to similar ecosystems. In addition, this study presents opportunities for expansion to include other taxa (e.g., macroinvertebrates and fish) to gain a comprehensive understanding of the driving mechanisms behind stream biodiversity.

Organophosphate pesticide residue impact on water quality and changes in macroinvertebrate community in an Afrotropical stream flowing through farmlands

River Chanchaga has experienced significant agricultural practices around its catchment, which involved the indiscriminate use of pesticides. However, residents of the study area are not well aware of the negative impact of pesticides on water quality and macroinvertebrates. In this study, the first report on the influence of organophosphate pesticide contamination on the abundance of the macroinvertebrate community was provided. Sampling for the determination of organophosphate pesticide residues was carried out during the peak of the two seasons, while macroinvertebrates and physicochemical variables were observed for 6 months. We examined 11 organophosphate pesticide residues using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, 12 water quality variables, and 625 macroinvertebrate individuals. The concentration of recorded organophosphate pesticide residues ranged from 0.01 to 0.52 μg/L. From the Canonical Correspondence Analysis plot, malathion, chlorine, and paraffin show a positive correlation with Unima sp., Hydrocanthus sp., Chironomus sp., and Potadoma sp. At station 3, depth shows a positive correlation with Biomphalaria sp. and Zyxomma sp., indicating poor water quality as most of these macroinvertebrates are indicators of water pollution. Diuron and carbofuran show a negative correlation with Lestes sp. and Pseudocloeon sp., and these are pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrates. The total mean concentration of organophosphate pesticide residues was above international drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization except for paraffin, chlorpyrifos, and diuron. In conclusion, the observations recorded from this research are useful in managing pesticide applications around the river catchment.

A diatom-based approach to refine nutrient concentrations compatible with the "good" status of Northern Italy rivers

The identification of ecologically sound thresholds represents an important step toward improving the ecological status of rivers through appropriate measures to contain nutrient loads. The aim of the present study was to estimate phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations compatible with the achievement of the "good" ecological status of rivers from data collected in the Po River District, the largest hydrographic system in Italy. For this purpose, relationships between the diatom index used in Italy for the national assessment of the stream ecological status, the ICMi (Intercalibration Common Metric index), and total phosphorus and nitrate concentrations were analyzed using monitoring data collected between 2009 and 2019. The Po River Basin encompasses five distinct river types, from Alpine to Mediterranean to Lowlands, characterized by different anthropogenic pressures and water quality. Through regression analysis between the ICMi and nutrient concentrations, we estimated ranges of the latter values corresponding to a "good" ecological status for each river type. The resulting thresholds are far more stringent than the limits set by the Italian legislation for water quality classification. This is particularly true for total phosphorus, whose threshold value should be roughly halved for all river types. For nitrates, the results are more differentiated according to river type: the estimated thresholds are much more stringent than those currently in use for siliceous Alpine and Mediterranean rivers. Moreover, the availability of such a large database allowed also to assess the influence of one nutrient over the other on the diatom community and to highlight some critical issues in the formulation of ICMi for Mediterranean rivers.
