Abstract
Agrifood industries generate large amounts of waste that may result in remarkable environmental problems, such as soil and water contamination. Therefore, proper waste management and treatment have become an environmental, economic, and social challenge. Most of these wastes are exceptionally rich in bioactive compounds (e.g., polyphenols) with potential applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Indeed, the recovery of polyphenols from agrifood waste is an example of circular bioeconomy, which contributes to the valorization of waste while providing solutions to environmental problems. In this context, unconventional extraction techniques at the industrial scale, such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), which has demonstrated its efficacy at the laboratory level for analytical purposes, have been suggested to search for more efficient recovery procedures. On the other hand, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been proposed as an efficient and green alternative to typical extraction solvents. This review aims to provide comprehensive insights regarding the extraction of phenolic compounds from agrifood waste. Specifically, it focuses on the utilization of MAE in conjunction with NADES. Moreover, this review delves into the possibilities of recycling and reusing NADES for a more sustainable and cost-efficient industrial application. The results obtained with the MAE-NADES approach show its high extraction efficiency while contributing to green practices in the field of natural product extraction. However, further research is necessary to improve our understanding of these extraction strategies, optimize product yields, and reduce overall costs, to facilitate the scaling-up.

Abstract
In this work, pilot-scale nanofiltration was used to obtain aqueous solutions rich in hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol from olive oil by-products. A large-scale simple process involving olive mill standard machinery (blender and decanter) was used for the olive pomace pre-treatment with water. The aqueous extract was then directly fed to a nanofiltration unit and concentrated by reverse osmosis. Final concentration factors ranged between 7 and 9 for hydroxytyrosol and between 4 and 7 for tyrosol. The final aqueous solution, obtained as retentate stream of reverse osmosis, was highly concentrated in hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol and their concentrations remained stable over at least 14 months.

Abstract
The fortification of foods with bioactive polyphenols aims to improve their functional properties and to provide health benefits. Yet, to exert their benefits, phenolic compounds must be released from the food matrix and absorbed by the small intestine after digestion, so assessing their bioaccessibility is crucial to determine their potential role. This work aims to incorporate Citrus reticulata Blanco peel extracts into wheat bread as a promising opportunity to increase their bioactive potential, along with supporting the sustainable management of citrus-industry waste. A control and a wheat bread enriched at 2% and 4% (w/v) with a phenolic extract from mandarin peels were prepared and analyzed for antioxidant activity and phenolic composition using LC-MS and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. In addition, in vitro digestion was performed, and the digested extracts were analyzed with HPLC-MS/MS. The results showed a significant increase in total flavonoid content (TFC, 2.2 ± 0.1 mg·g-1), antioxidant activity (IC50 = 37 ± 4 mg·g-1), and contents of quercetin, caffeic acid, and hesperidin in the 4% (w/v) enriched bread. Yet, most polyphenols were completely degraded after the in vitro digestion process, barring hesperidin (159 ± 36 μg·g-1), highlighting the contribution of citrus enrichment in the development of an enriched bread with antioxidant potential.

Abstract
An increasing understanding of the negative environmental effects of waste discharges has made valorization of distillery by-products to recover added-value compounds a sound option for distillery stillage management. In this study, the recovery of bioactive compounds, i.e. polyphenols, from distillery stillage was performed by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and conventional solid-liquid extraction (CSLE) to investigate the effects of extraction time, the concentration of ethyl acetate (EA) in a solvent mixture with ethanol and water, and solid-to-solvent ratio on the recovery yield and antioxidant activity of the extracts. The highest yields of total polyphenol content (TPC) (3.73 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and phenolic acid content (2.51 μg/g) were obtained with 8-min MAE with 70% EA. MAE provided 1.2- and 1.4-times higher yield of phenolic acids and 1.2- and 1.6-times higher antioxidant activity than UAE and CSLE, respectively. Due to the approximately 3-times higher rate of extraction, the ratio between energy consumption and extraction yield was better in MAE than in UAE. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the antioxidant activity of the extracts was positively correlated with TPC and phenolic acid content. Six phenolic acids that were identified were present mainly in their free forms (up to 95% of the total), with a predominance of ferulic (up to 0.80 μg/g) and p-coumaric (up to 0.72 μg/g) acids.

Abstract
A biosurfactant-assisted mechanical amorphous dispersion extraction (BA-MADE) procedure was established for the simultaneous capture of hydrophilic phenolic acids and hydrophobic tanshinones from Salvia miltiorrhiza. Single-factor experiments and the response surface methodology were used to optimize and analyze the crucial parameters for the method, such as the type and amount of amorphous-dispersion extractants, grinding time, extraction time and solid-to-liquid ratio. The optimized parameter values for the BA-MADE process were 407.02 mg of sodium chenodeoxycholate, a grinding time of 4.87 min, an extraction time of 4.92 min, and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 0.5:10 g/mL. The calibration curves of danshensu, rosmarinic acid, lithospermic acid, salvianolic acid B, salvianolic acid A, dihydrotanshinone I, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, and tanshinone II A exhibited good linearity in the range of 1-500 μg/mL (R2 ≥ 0.9990). The limits of detection of nine analytes ranged from 5.46 to 130 ng/mL, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intraday and interday precision were less than 1.95 and 3.56%, respectively, and the recoveries of the real sample were in the range of 85-113%, with RSD% below 3.21%. The BA-MADE method was compared with previously reported methods, such as heating reflux extraction, ultrasonic extraction and microwave-assisted micellar extraction, and the results demonstrated that the developed method has significant advantages in the simultaneous extraction of hydrophilic and hydrophobic active components from Salvia miltiorrhiza.
