Effect of aluminum leaching pretreatment on catalytic pyrolysis of metallised food packaging plastics and its linear and nonlinear kinetic behaviour

The application of PTR-MS and non-targeted analysis to characterize VOCs emitted from a plastic recycling facility fire

BACKGROUND

On April 11th, 2023, the My Way Trading (MWT) recycling facility in Richmond, Indiana caught fire, mandating the evacuation of local residents and necessitating the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct air monitoring. The EPA detected elevated levels of plastic combustion-related air pollutants, including hydrogen cyanide and benzene.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to identify these and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present as well as to identify the potential hazard of each compound for various human health effects.

METHODS

To identify the VOCs, we conducted air monitoring at sites within and bordering the evacuation zone using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and non-targeted analysis (NTA). To facilitate risk assessment of the emitted VOCs, we used the EPA Hazard Comparison Dashboard.

RESULTS

We identified 46 VOCs, within and outside the evacuation zone, with average detection levels above local background levels measured in Middletown, OH. Levels of hydrogen cyanide and 4 other VOCs were at least 1.8-fold higher near the incidence site in comparison to background levels and displayed unique temporal and spatial patterns. The 46 VOCs identified had the highest hazardous potential for eye and skin irritation, with approximately 45% and 39%, respectively, of the VOCs classified as high and very high hazards for these endpoints. Notably, all detected VOC levels were below the hazard thresholds set for single VOC exposures; however, hazard thresholds for exposure to VOC mixtures are currently unclear.

IMPACT

This study serves as a proof-of-concept that PTR-MS coupled with NTA can facilitate rapid identification and hazard assessment of VOCs emitted following anthropogenic disasters. Furthermore, it demonstrates that this approach may augment future disaster responses to quantify additional VOCs present in complex combustion mixtures.

Hidden realities: Food waste from servings in mini size packaging

This paper provides data obtained from real-life measurement of the Food Waste (FW) associated with the services offering food in mini size (9-20 g) single-use packaging representing the impact of the difficulties in emptying the food from such packages and service characteristics. We collected discarded such food packages from commercial public eateries (a time-share thermal town, student canteen, and student refectory), quantified FW, and subjected data to statistical analysis regarding the eatery places, package characteristics, and food type. The results suggest that service style, packaging, and consumer wastefulness can cause 10-47 %, 3-11 %, and 5-37 % FW, respectively, indicating hidden part of the wastage iceberg from mini size food portions with vast implication on the food and relevant packaging sustainability. Regarding the packing, the dominant cause of FW is difficulties in emptying the food, such as the shape, size, depth, width, and material of the package. Concerning the consumer wastefulness, our measurements seem to imply that the groups with relatively higher affluency creates more FW. Our results will prove to be highly beneficial in both promoting efforts to raise awareness of not only consumers but also industry players and decision makers on the sustainability for food and relevant packaging material.

Pyrolysis Kinetic Behavior and Thermodynamic Analysis of PET Nonwoven Fabric

This research aims to maximize polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nonwoven fabric waste and make it as a new source for benzoic acid extraction using a pyrolysis process. The treatment was performed using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and released products were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The pyrolysis kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of PET fabric was also studied and simulated using different linear and nonlinear models. The results show that the PET fabric is very rich in volatile matter (80 wt.%) and can completely degrade under 490 °C with a weight loss of 84%. Meanwhile, the generated vapor was rich in the carbonylic C=O functional group (FTIR), and the GC-MS analysis concluded that benzoic acid was the major compound with an abundance of 75% that was achieved at the lowest heating rate (5 °C/min). The linear kinetic results showed that PET samples had an activation energy in the ranges of 193-256 kJ/mol (linear models) and ~161 kJ/mol (nonlinear models). The thermodynamic parameters, including enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and entropy, were estimated in the ranges of 149-250 kJ/mol, 153-232 kJ/mol, and 256-356 J/mol K, respectively. Accordingly, pyrolysis treatment can be used to extract benzoic acid from PET fabric waste with a 134% increase in the benzoic acid abundance that can be recovered from PET bottle plastic waste.

Pyrolysis behavior, kinetics, and thermodynamics of waste pharmaceutical blisters under CO2 atmosphere

The disastrous impact of COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significantly increased production and use of pharmaceutical drugs, which is accompanied by the rapid generation of waste pharmaceutical blisters (WPBs). Nonetheless, its treatment has not gained appropriate attentions and a perceptible process development was not achieved. In this study, the WPBs pyrolysis in CO₂ atmosphere was conducted as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics were investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the WPBs decomposition could be divided into two stages of 25 - 365 °C and 365 - 900 °C with mass loss of 56.5 - 60.5 wt% and 22.5 - 25.9 wt%, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated the dechlorination process initiating at ∼300 °C. The simultaneous asymmetric stretching of HCl and stretching vibration of C-Cl bond was detected in the range of 2600 - 3250 cm^-1 and 660 - 750 cm^-1, respectively. The dechlorination reactions were almost complete at ∼520 °C and minor peaks (2900 -3100 cm^-1) due to C-H vibrations were observed. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis indicated that the evolved products included alkanes, benzene, olefin, as well as HCl. The cycloalkenes content significantly increased during the second conversion stage, implying the addition reactions between alkanes and olefins. The apparent activation energy was calculated using three model-free methods and the values from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa model increased from 142.0 to 255.8 kJ·mol^-1 with an average value of 147.4 kJ·mol^-1. The methods of Coats-Redfern as well as Malek were applied to determine the reaction mechanism. The one-dimensional diffusion model was more reliable to describe the WPBs pyrolysis. This study will represent a significant reference case for the thermochemical conversion of multilayer packing waste and facing the increasing demand for the medical waste recycling.

On-Line Thermally Induced Evolved Gas Analysis: An Update-Part 2: EGA-FTIR

The on-line thermally induced evolved gas analysis (OLTI-EGA) is widely applied in many different fields. Aimed to update the applications, our group has systematically collected and published examples of EGA characterizations. Following the recently published review on EGA-MS applications, this second part reviews the latest applications of Evolved Gas Analysis performed by on-line coupling heating devices to infrared spectrometers (EGA-FTIR). The selected 2019, 2020, 2021 and early 2022 references are collected and briefly described in this review; these are useful to help researchers to easily find applications that are sometimes difficult to locate.
