Influence of construction works on urban streamflow water quality variations

Construction activities can have long-lasting impacts on receiving water bodies, especially when they receive polluted urban runoff. Therefore, it is essential to minimize these impacts on water quality and consider the long-term environmental effects of development activities. This study aims to provide insights into the assessment, temporal variations, and key variables associated with the impact of construction works on streamflow water quality. However, current assessment methods relating to construction works and streamflow water quality may lead to spurious correlations. A spurious correlation refers to a connection between two variables that appears to be causal but is not. This study proposes a novel approach to avoid spurious correlations between construction work signatures and water quality, ensuring causality and correlation between water quality parameters. The approach was applied to a developing urban catchment in Hong Kong. Compared to existing assessment models, the proposed approach advances in ensuring true correlations between construction works and streamflow water quality. It is also the first to develop a new indicator to represent the key variable of construction works. In this study, salinity, turbidity, and suspended solids were used as substitutes for construction activity parameters, such as the number of construction works, to correlate with water quality parameters. Additionally, principal component analysis and the construction work signature index were both adopted to calculate the key variables of water quality on behalf of construction works. Results demonstrate that the new approach has significantly improved causality by 45 % compared to previous assessment methods. However, the method has limitations as it does not consider the impact of rainfall on construction works.

Activated Sludge Combined with Pervious Concrete Micro-Ecosystem for Runoff Rainwater Collection and Pollutant Purification

This study investigated the purification of pollutants in runoff rainwater by constructing a micro-ecosystem using waste-activated sludge (WAS) and riverbed sludge (RBS) as inoculums in combination with pervious concrete. The research results showed that the best hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 9 h. The COD and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal of the waste-activated sludge ecosystem (WASE) was 62.67% and 71.21%, respectively, while the riverbed sludge ecosystem (RBSE) showed COD and NH4+-N removal percentages of 46.05% and 66.55%, respectively. The analysis of the genetic metabolism of microbial genes showed that the system was microbially enhanced with extensive and diverse populations. At the phylum level, the microorganisms responsible for degrading organic matter were mainly Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota. At the genus level, the Trichococcus genus was dominant in the WASE, while the Dietzia, norank_f__Sporomusaceae and norank_f__norank_o__norank_c__BRH-c20a genera were the central bacterial populations in the RBSE. The proliferation of phylum-level bacteria in the WASE was relatively large, and the genus-level bacteria demonstrated a better removal efficiency for pollutants. The overall removal effect of the WASE was better than that of the RBSE. The application analyses showed that a WASE is capable of effectively accepting and treating all rainfall below rainstorm levels and at near-full rainstorm levels under optimal removal efficiency conditions. This study innovatively used wastewater plant waste-activated sludge combined with pervious concrete to construct a micro-ecosystem to remove runoff rainwater pollutants. The system achieved pollutant removal comparable to that of pervious concrete modified with adsorbent materials. An effective method for the collection and pollutant treatment of urban runoff rainwater is provided.

Alteration of bacterial community composition in the sediments of an urban artificial river caused by sewage discharge

Background

Urbanization has an ecological and evolutionary effect on urban microorganisms. Microorganisms are fundamental to ecosystem functions, such as global biogeochemical cycles, biodegradation and biotransformation of pollutants, and restoration and maintenance of ecosystems. Changes in microbial communities can disrupt these essential processes, leading to imbalances within ecosystems. Studying the impact of human activities on urban microbes is critical to protecting the environment, human health, and overall urban sustainability.

Methods

In this study, bacterial communities in the sediments of an urban artificial river were profiled by sequencing the 16S rRNA V3-V4 region. The samples collected from the eastern side of the Jiusha River were designated as the JHE group and were marked by persistent urban sewage discharges. The samples collected on the western side of the Jiusha River were categorized as the JHW group for comparative analysis.

Results

The calculated alpha diversity indices indicated that the bacterial community in the JHW group exhibited greater species diversity and evenness than that of the JHE group. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum between the two groups, followed by Bacteroidota. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota accumulated in the JHE group was higher than in the JHW group. Therefore, the estimated biomarkers in the JHE group were divided evenly between Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota, whereas the biomarkers in the JHW group mainly belonged to Proteobacteria. The Sulfuricurvum, MND1, and Thiobacillus genus were the major contributors to differences between the two groups. In contrast to JHW, JHE exhibited higher enzyme abundances related to hydrolases, oxidoreductases, and transferases, along with a prevalence of pathways associated with carbohydrate, energy, and amino acid metabolisms. Our study highlights the impact of human-induced water pollution on microorganisms in urban environments.

Effect of climate change on the water quality of Mediterranean rivers and alternatives to improve its status

Surface water (SW) quality is particularly vulnerable to increased concentrations of nutrients, and this issue may be exacerbated by climate change. Knowledge of the effects of temperature and rainfall on SW quality is required to take the necessary measures to achieve good SW status in the future. To address this, the aims of this study were threefold: (1) to assess how a changing climate may alter the nitrate, ammonium, phosphorus and biological oxygen demand status (BOD5) of SW; (2) assess the relationship between water quality and flow; and (3) simulate diffuse and point source pollution reduction scenarios in the Júcar River Basin District in the Mediterranean region. A regionalised long-term climate scenario was used following one Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP8.5) with the data incorporated into the coupling of hydrological and water quality models. According to these climate change scenarios, SW with poor nitrate, ammonium, phosphorus and BOD5 status are expected to increase in the future by factors of 1.3, 1.9, 4 and 4, respectively. Furthermore, median ammonium and phosphorus concentration may be doubled in months with low flows. Additional measures are required to maintain current status in the water bodies, and it is necessary to reduce at least 25% of diffuse nitrate pollution, and 50% of point loads of ammonium, phosphorus, and BOD5.
